"Ba Lhakar Zong" which i am told is in Dechen, in Kham. The song apparently is in praise of this idyllic place. Again this is what I have gathered from people I have asked. Still what a wonderfully spirit uplifting song this is.

Yup, you are right. Was in Gyalthang ( or Chinese used to call it Zongdian and then renamed few years ago to this silly 'Shangri-la'). Then travelled to Dechen or also called Gyupa where the famous and sacred Mountain 'Kang Kawa Karpo' is located, three white peaks representing Manjushri, Tara, Buddha's. Apparently no one was successful in climbing or shouldn't as it's sacred to Buddhists and Bon similar to Mount Kailash. Well about a dozen Japanese climbers perished a while ago attempting to climb. I am digressing ... Former Tibetan prime minister in exile, Samdhong Rinpoche or envoy of Dalai Lama is from Dechen/Gyupa and highly revered by the locals there. Pinyin name is 'Diqing'. Tibetan name is 'Dechen' or as mentioned also called Kham Gyupa. Very lush and beautiful from Gyalthang to Dechen. Used to be part of greater Tibet or within Tibetan culture but now part of Yunnan. After Dechen then it's Kham province in the Tibetan Autonomous Region or TAR.

No ... I am willing to bet, it's in Kongpo region within TAR with the average elevation of about 2000 m it's lush with the deepest valley in the world of Namcha Barwa peak. Also a major tourist destination in China with Nyingtri airport and one of many boutique 5 star hotels. Unfortunately they are more Chinese settlers living in Kongpo region than native Tibetans due to milder climate and lower elevation.
