James Taylor is a legend. Every moment we get to hear him sing is a gift.
Very well done, thank you James Taylor
Finally, a clean and respectable act. Classic and elegant like the anthem should be. Way to go MLB!
Always beautiful from Our James
To any haters...James Taylor remembered all the words....
a veiled dig at Donald Trump? Or just an ageist insult directed at anyone over 70? Real nice.
You know James Taylor is 70, don't you?
Kinda refreshing after hearing all those loud, over the top versions.
James sang quite well, but the magic was in his guitar reharmonization ... fantastic! He masterfully Taylored it to his own language, and it’s a beautiful thing.
As always, very moving! Nice change from all the screeching renditions!
pat edwards agreed. it shouldn't be 5 minutes of screaming.
Agreed. What so many forget is that the song is the star, not the singer.
proper, respectful, well done.
Amen.
THIS is getting criticism?? He did fine! Another example of "those who can: do. Those who can't: criticize", I guess.
I do not recall ever seeing an acoustic guitar being used, I like it. The Anthem does not need to be an over the top concert performance. This was simple and respectful.
He did miss a couple notes and wobbled the low-E string but overall it was good and it does not warrant all the hate on social media.
You want the E string to wobble that's the fuckin' point, keep it low for the Anthem,...if you know music
Very nicely done! James Taylor's legacy will live on years and decades long after the voices of the current crop of critics have long been silenced.
It’s hard to believe that anyone could say anything negative about James Taylor. It must be the parents fault who didn’t do their job and teach their children what real music sounds like. Keep on singing James Taylor! Nobody sings or plays a guitar like James Taylor
Sounds like a comment I would have made.......YES!!!!!!!!!
James Taylor was blasted in the social media for various reasons, such as baseball's mistake in allowing a senior citizen to sing the Anthem in view of baseball's declining popularity with younger people, etc. These critics never stopped long enough to appreciate this performance for the masterpiece that it is! And, if I may say so, with the nation pulled in so many different directions, isn't it nice to have a living legend like James Taylor remind us that, despite all of our troubles, we are still and always a great nation and a great people!!!
Indeed!
If baseball depends on Rap, Pop or Hip Hop singers to bastardize the anthem to get millennials to like the sport, then MLB is doomed.
YellowstoneBound1948 I wouldn’t go so far as to say “masterpiece”. It was...acceptable. Not the best, not the worst.
Well said
It's sad how temporally arrogant and ageist people have become. If he was sporting a Bosley Hair Replacement system and was botoxed it would be considered acceptable for viewing audiences.
Yes kids , that’s what a guitar looks like
That's an Olson, too. Worth as much new as some pretty decent cars.
Man, i hate when old heads talk down to youth
That's thee best National Anthem i have EVER heard. GOD bless America and James Taylor.
Legend!!
I don’t see anything wrong with his performance. He may not be the greatest or most impressive vocalist, but his voice is very soothing. He performed our anthem with respect and humility, unlike other artists who act as if they’re competing for the next round of American Idol.
He's a great vocalist, but we all get older.
James Taylor is a national treasure. Perhaps the only singer who can take the warlike national anthem and bring a sense of warmth and gentleness to it.
Sweet Baby James! One of a kind- thank you for that lovely rendition!
Everything is mocked on social media. When people can comment without being face-to-face with other people, they tend to be a--holes. Their inner dialog pushes thru their inner filter with ease.
Great job James Taylor
Best ever....America is blessed by James Taylor....for so long..since i was a little boy...and he influenced me in a very good way. Thanks bro.
This is a two-way street, guys - the singing of the National anthem. It is both a moment to reflect upon and pay respect to our great Nation as well as a moment to honor the person given the opportunity to sing the anthem - in this case, the legendary James Taylor. To all the people who took time out of their day to do anything but follow suit: I pity you and your apparently empty lives. All hail the US and JT! And, play ball!....
This was so GOOD!!!! Why is this being criticized?
THAT'S how it's done: reverently, respectfully, self-effacing. Class act.
I could not agree more.
Yes, that's why the millennial goofball crowd on social media didn't like it.
A true class act!!! The way it should be!!!
... and what part of this performance was worth attacking???
NONE!
Well done James.
So why was this mocked on social media?. I thought he did well........
Because he wasn't screaming and screeching, the new high bar for the American voice.
Jay Dee--Didn't think about that. I can't stand that BS style of singing the anthem.
Eric Allen he did...that’s the problem.
I don't know who was mocking him. That story originated from Fox. Most of the comments I've seen have been positive. He's a huge Red Sox fan and a Boston native, and he's an iconic singer/songwriter. Why would anyone have a problem with James Taylor singing the national anthem at a Sox game?
His voice is shaky, he’s off rhythm, and it’s easier to mock him since he’s older.
Done in the James Taylor style that we all know and appreciate...loved it!!
People mocked him on social media??? I don't care how he sounded. He's 70 years old. He's James FUCKING Taylor and he's playing his guitar!! His voice and that guitar are like a warm blanket to a lot of us.
Classic James Taylor and at 70 years of age he still has the class to sing to a packed house.
Still tours and sings to packed houses at his concerts all the time.
I saw reports about the "nay sayers " in the news so I checked out the vid. Exactly what I expected from James Taylor. Great job
Why are people picking this
Its not bad Nicely done
Because people love hiding behind the cloak of the internet and criticize ANYTHING they see. It never ceases to amaze me the ingratitude people have for these simple things. It wasn't perfect but it was good enough and shows the patriotism some folks still have. I always look for the positive first and I just shut my trap if I have nothing good to say.
Odd, I see a reply but there's no real reply.
Fair enough but what I'm getting at is people are ALWAYS so quick to slam stuff out in youtube land. The thumbs down is like the worst thing to have and serves no utility at all. If I don't like something, I just move on. Sorry - I'm just not in to looking for the bad in everything and the internet is a breeding ground for people to be a'holes. Hell, you could watch some 3 yr old singing and someone will say something stupid.
I didn't expect for one minute anyone would change their ways, just expressing my opinion. Yes, you can say whatever it is you want and all I'm saying is the internet produces a lot of a'hole comments. It's clear you don't get the message I'm sending. In short, people have become more rude in our society and are far more willing to say crap here that they wouldn't do in person. We'll agree to disagree.
I love this. I have NO idea why people are mocking him, he’s being respectful and i love the use of the guitar in this, to all you haters. Leave this alone it’s perfect
Great song in your 👐 hands and well done. 🙏👍 Thanks Mr Taylor.
James Taylor for the win!!! 😎👍✌️
🇺🇸🙌🏻❤️❤️❤️ respect ✊.... Thank you all ..
I heard some people were not happy with JT. I loved it. Getting tired of people singing the anthem and making it about them. He did it right. Class act.
Fantastic!!!!
If you have a chance, visit Ft McHenry in Baltimore to see where Key was inspired to write our National Anthem. The museum is inspirational and worth seeing.
Very nice rendition.
Thank you James Taylor.
Love this man!
Sounds like James Taylor to me. Which is top notch.
Beautiful!
Pure, simple and to the point. I can't wait for this pandemic to be over so I can attend one of his concerts.
Mandatory 15 second adds for every single video on this channel
Just a man and his guitar... classic! Let’s go Dodgers
How refreshing to see!! And not one person took a knee, I guess baseball really is America’s pastime!
The legend lives on
Nice too see a home town legend was chosen to sing the anthem, oh and someone who is capable of singing in key . Niceone
Stylish and respectful. Thanks.
National Treasure!
Very good and everyone was standing. Great showcase for America's true game.
Nice and simple, no over done pauses or screams. Awesome!
Thank u James Taylor!
Great job sweet baby James. Baseball players respect the flag
HE STILL GOT IT!
Thanks James 💗
James Taylor is great. One of America's finest.
My son works in an upscale store. Last month he and his wife came in and my son recognized him right away. My son who’s filter is a little porous said” aren’t you James Taylor?” He said yes how do you know me? You are so young. He said yeh my dad played your music in the car all the time. What songs Shower The People.. lol My son said he was so nice and genuine. What a good dude.
I saw this on the front page of a news outlet after I went there to see what their coverage of the mail bombs looked like. I don't normally give this outlet the clicks but I was curious with such a big news event that I went. I noticed on the front page, right below the bomb coverage, a picture of James Taylor and "WORLD SERIES ... DO BETTER". I came here to watch the video (they embedded in the article) and found nothing wrong with it. Actually I thought James did a great rendition of the song. Maybe Dropkick Murphys will perform the Star Spangled Banner for game 2. That might get the lead story on this particular website... despite all the bombs.
I don't usually like James Taylor, but I felt that he did a great job with the national anthem at Fenway for game 1.
This guy can still sing great
Everyone talking about Whitney and now Chris Stapleton singing our national anthem. IMHO they moved it around too much. This is what our Anthem should sound like. It doesn't hurt that it's the amazing voice of James Taylor either!
beautiful
Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you don't see it fitting for James Taylor to sing the National Anthem, read the section "Early Years" Notice, he was born in Boston! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Taylor#Family_and_personal_life His Father was quite an accomplished American patriot also
Huh? He did good. What's the problem?
That's how to do it, with dignity and feeling. I'm not an American, but how anyone could take issue with James over that is beyond me - he can come over to Britain and sing our national anthem anytime he likes. Pat Edwards hit the nail on the head.
Not sure why some people disliked it. Sounded good to me!
To the auto tuned generation of over produced pop, this is what a real live performance sounds like and James still has a beautiful voice and an incredibly unique and wonderful acoustic guitar ability at age 70. There are a lot of people on UA-cam teaching guitar in the style of James Taylor for a reason. My only criticism is not the performance it was the mix which could have increased the guitar volume some.
❤Great ❤
He is so old he once sang the anthem before a Cy Young start.
Interesting, how those who criticize seem to prefer vulgar, over the top, screeching versions, often sung by people who don't even know the words and meaning of their own national anthem (a Disgrace). Or those who try to change it, the same way they are trying to mess with the Constitution...Love, respect and defend your country...Sing from your heart. That's all it takes
No point in me commenting, everybody else that commented were spot on!
Outstanding performance of our great nations anthem. I think the haters are upset because he didn't take a knee while performing it.
That's JT!
Did you notice all the ball players standing in deep thought and reverence for our National Anthem? Unlike some football players.
❤️
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And none of these players were being jerks and taking a knee during the national anthem like the NFL does. Amazing!
Exactly, that's why I love baseball, no politics.
Great job. Sweet and easy, like me!
He will for all time be one of the richest treasures of our nation.
This was amazing so sad our society is so far gone they mock true talent and grace
I give it a 4 out of 10 but only because it's Sweet Baby James.
I say " well done James ". Thought it was great, don't understand why anyone would have a problem with this .
It’s fine, his guitar playing is certainly off key to how he was singing but it was respectful and meant with good intentions.
It could've been worse. I thought it _was_ going to be a lot worse, after reading some of the comments on social media. But there's this: The guy is a national treasure, but he's pushing his luck in that area by taking too many encores in his career, like McCartney, "Fleetwood Mac" (why did I feel compelled to put that in quotes), and others. Your lovely baritone voice has faded badly, James, along with you songwriting chops. Quit while the quitting is good, and leave us with _only_ good memories of your brilliance. But give him credit for one thing - he didn't bugger this SACRED tune up by making a musical mockery out of it, like so many others do.
This was really nice. Beautifully sung & played. His voice isn't what it once was, but so what? At least he didn't do "...land of the freeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...and the hoooooooome of theeeeeeeee braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaave..." He just sang it straight, which I wish more of them would do. Lady Gaga did a surprisingly nice job a couple of years ago at the Super Bowl, too. Let's make this a trend.
Is it my iimagination or is the American Flag backwards? Nice job by James Taylor.
Complaints on twitter that it was subdued? WTH is wrong with people? It was fine. Good job James!
Good job with the cold weather it is hard to play guitar outside. Sound recording couldv'e been better too
Also I do have to consider the source of the negative report Fox News. Could this have to do with James Taylor’s politics who supported Clinton?
Thank you. It was Fox that put the first negative story out there about social media. JT is on record as a liberal Democrat who doesn't care for Fox news. Yeah, they went after him--and tried to gin up a story that his performance was badly received. I don't think it was, by most people but yeah, I see politics in this.
No doubt about it JT is a Leftist Loon......
No doubt your interpretation of anyone who has liberal/progressive political views. I've always found him to be intelligent, thoughtful, and concerned about being a good citizen and helping others. If that's a "leftist loon," then I hope we're blessed with more of them.
He did a good job..people are assholes..
Must have been cold there, but I like it.
Where are the kneelers ?
GO DODGERS!!!
I liked it. I thought it was pretty good and simple. Nothing wrong with that. So what if he's not Ariana Grande? He doesn't have to be. I'm a lifelong James Taylor fan. I'm 34, which obviously makes me a millennial, but so what? I like James Taylor.
I think he did a fantastic job. That is how it should be done, honorable and respectful. I don't like his politics but I can certainly separate the man from the music. Well done JT!
JT is a folk singer. He isn't some voice diva that has to do vocal acrobatics to show off. Sure, his voice is a little weak but my gosh, the guy is 70. Hey, dude has sold over 100M records. He signed a record deal with the Beatles. Yes, the beatles produced and distributed his early music. And on top of that, the guy made his own style of guitar playing. It's the "james taylor style" and it's incredibly difficult to play right. Trust me; i've attempted it. This man could've choked on this performance (he didn't) and he would still demand respect for his career accomplishments.
