  • A video of my setup today with the tarpaulin on cwmaman mountain, using a baofeng uv5r5/external speaker mic/5 meters of rg8x coax/and a nagoya nl770h base antenna! hit plenty of repeaters, and i also worked matt (g7uuc) in fishponds bristol.

    Had the same setup built onto a rucksack frame , man-portable. Radio was good , antenna seemed to pull in some decent signals with lots of stations being heard out to 20 miles+ from top of local hills. One negative on the antenna - IT ISNT THE STURDIEST , and detached from the bottom coil section and finally snapping. ) was my own fault , forgot to fold antenna down backwards whilst tabbing through pine forests...if looked after it should be fine.

    Good video.👍🏻 .......would you say that is the best antenna for the Uv-5r or do you use different ones ?

      Scott Soats thanks for the comment! The 770h and the 770r is the best youre likely to get using the baofeng models! They match these antennas perfectly, as there both chinese antennas same as the baofeng are chinese, 73.

    What type of antenna is that, and where did you get it from ? Did you need an adapter to fit to the radio and if so where did you get that from as well ? Thanks for any info you can give me. I want to put an antenna on my truck using this same radio.

      Your in luck, its a mobile antenna for 2m/70cm, its called a NAGOYA NL-770H, its 3 feet in length has a good gain, and can be screwed directly onto a magmount, (which its originally designed for!) But you can also plug it through an external ground plane kit, and even plug the antenna directly to your coax cable using an S0239 female to female adaptor! You would also need to get an SMA female to SO239 female adaptor to plug into you radio end, the adaptors and antenna can be found on amazon/ebay/aliexpress, hope this helps, and enjoy your new setup! 73 from m6stl 👍.

    I have recently got into this hobby, fascinated by all this,I've got into this because I'm housebound,can you recommend an external antenna,thanks for your time.

      Yeah no problem mate, I definitely recommend the antenna I'm using in this video for mobile and homebase! But for the external Homebase antenna for permanent fixture for say 2m/70cm then I would recommend a Watson w50 co-linear 👍

    I've bought Nagoya UT-72 antenna to pair with Baofeng UV5R, but the radio stays silent. What could be the issue? Any solution will be appreciated.

    Nice Video, I have the Baofeng F8 HP, so I might have to try something like you did. I live in Wyoming. KI7BSL, 73s Now for a question, would a longer mobile antenna help? I have a 5/8th wave antenna on my bike 40.5 inches long, I am thinking about upgrading to a 7/8th wave antenna that is 62.2 inches long, and has a higher DB. Is it worth it when using a Baofeng radio?

    • @TTMF
      @TTMF 6 років тому

      m6stl; it wasn't a negative what we were saying. Your video was great. Great elevation and great contact distances. That antenna is supposed to have a ground plane to get all you can out of it. If you used a ground plane with it you would get even greater distances with even better quality. I have a slim Jim antenna. Made by N9TAX (look it up I bought it on ebay) that is a great antenna for what you're doing in this video. And it's very portable. I'm subscribing now. I like your vids.
