When you get frustrated at dying, put it down and go play something else. Pick it up the next day. A lot of people will just keep trying for hours or quit the game completely. I used to try the same boss for hours only to beat him in 1 run the next day on dark souls. It works

I am rewatching this a year later, and I can confidently say a lot of the major issues that were present have been fixed! If anyone was iffy about the game due to not having a save function or the game crashing and losing progress the dev team have fixed both of those issues. There's now a suspend cycle function that you can legitimately turn off the PS5 or play another game and then as soon as you load it back up it's right where you left off! Also my game crashed once in a 70hr playthrough and I thought my progress was gone, but nope, was in the exact same room I left off. I strongly recommend people to give this game a try, one of the best games I've ever played.
I just bought this and a PS5. Thank you for posting the update! I was super worried I would only be able to play when I had 2 or 3 hours to do nothing else.
I personally hate rouge like games because for one I never finish the game. I play the same thing over and over and never any sense of progression or accomplishment. I’ll play them occasionally but only at a cheap price tag.
Playing this game with the sound on the pulse headphones with the dual sense controller made me go "ok, this is actually next gen." Truly wild experience.
I started the game, paused it after the opening cutscene, drove to Target 20 min before they closed to grab a Pulse headset and havent looked back since. So awesome haha
Nothing about this game is next-gen lol. It uses UE4 so has essentially the same graphical fidelity as the DMC 5 or RE2. It could have easily been on PS4 but sony wants system sellers, which this game isn't.
@@aguajaneta you think the ps4 could keep up with all these particle effects, maintaing a fps constantly close to 60fps and a resolution close to 4k? 🤣 The ps4 could probably play it at 30fps with downgraded visuals, but that defeats the point because the visuals and fps are so important when playing a game of this nature.
My tip is something I saw you not doing in the video, especially towards the end. Pick up healing items when you're at full health. There are two health items, Silphium, which heals you, and Silphium Resin, which goes towards upgrading your max HP, and they can both spawn at any time. BUT, when you have full HP, all the restorative pick-ups turn into upgrades, the Resin, even if they've already spawned. You can e it happen if you use a consumable heal while looking at a pick-up, it will immediately transform into a Resin

This game is absolute torture. It’s ridiculously hard, and unforgiving. It tells you essentially zero as far as what to do, where to go, and how to get there. Then you die, and the map you just spent 30 minutes learning and memorizing is gone. Brand new map, new enemies, nothing is where it was last time. Then you finally make it to a boss after countless cycles of attempts. What happens? He smacks you right back to the crash site. This game is NOT meant for those who have a habit of rage quitting or smashing remotes. This game is infuriating, and… I love it
When you finish a biome try back tracking through it to the start. Occasionally new enemies can appear as well as something very creepy watching you from high places. There are a ton of little details that a lot of players will miss and the game is totally ok with letting you miss them but for those that look, you will not be disappointed.
Dejan Lukic well the easiest way to see it without spoiling would be in Crimson waste in the first area, but I’ve found it in over grown forest as well. The scariest moment for me involved revisiting the ship during a run. So if you’re looking around a bit then check the ship too. It’s always got little details in the cockpit and bedroom.

@@docmar42011 this is an ignorant reply without realizing the precedent this the increase set. You say "it's just 10$ more." In 10 years, they'll increase the price again and the kids of that generation will say "it's just 10$ more." This cycle can repeat until video games cost as much as a new console while a new console costs as much as an iPhone.
@@TheseEyesSeeDarknessClearly7 not to mention that the reason Sony said they increased their prices is because games are getting more expensive to develop which i highly doubt with Returnal, Sackboy or Destruction All-Stars but at least on that people weren't dumb enough to buy that and Sony realized it was going to fail big time. Also 70 isn't the main price for all of us. Here in Europe it's 80 euros at launch and i've heard people from Canada saying it's 120 or something which is downright ridiculous. I don't understand why that's the case especially because last gen prices were 60 both here and the US.

for me its the little things and sheer amount of little details that puts Returnal in the upper echelons of game design. It simply oozes confidence and style with such an ease.
I can honestly say this is one of the best and intriguing games I've played in awhile even though I haven't beaten it yet I am very much looking forward to what is to come and highly recommend it to anyone to play
If you haven't look into Risk of Rain 2. Very similar style and it looks great, has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a video game, and endless replayability.
One year later I'm on Biome 4. As much as I like Returnal, especially its story it's just mentally and physically exhausting. Truthfully I never would have purchased it had I of known it was going to be a brutally difficult Roguelike. The Astronaut is helpful but only to a certain extent. I know I'm a bit slow to the party, but I played it today for an hour or two and I am totally HOOKED. Roguelikes aren't my type but bullethells surely are. Even on my crappy GTC 1050ti, just like you said the sound effects, the feel, and the general environment of the game really play a major role in selling the game. I'll play through it for now but will leave the alternate endings for when I upgrade my PC to experience it in its full glory. Your before you buy was a tremendous help!

It is addictive, fun as heck, and just feels so sharp and polished. They've added a "save" feature and that sold me on at least trying it and I'm glad I did. This is a great game.

@@Yan99s Yes, I finished my first playthrough. Beat the final boss and watched the end cutscene around the 21 hour mark. i've still got a lot more game to chew on.
Just tried this out today. Got to the first boss on my first run, died, but got some sort of second wind that I didn't know existed, suffice to say I killed it with my second chance. It was a nice I haven't had in many games in a while. I didn't feel too weak and I didn't feel too strong. It gives a 3d Castlevania feel. Dashing, dodging, timing, shooting, and having be able to explore to my heart's content without the fear of getting to a point of no return.
Not rogue like or triple A. Are you drunk? In the video-game industry, AAA (pronounced and sometimes written Triple-A) is an informal classification used to categorize games produced and distributed by a mid-sized or major publisher, which typically have higher development and marketing budgets than other tiers of game. Sony is nothing special.. and they don't have an awesome track record for game development past Everquest pre- 2004.
Same. I had heard really hard and I was a bit skeptical. I love games like enter the gungeon but I never got into dark souls and shit. So you can see where my spectrum was at. I bought it though and much like you, I love it. But like gameranx said, runs can just get to long sometimes if you are getting better at the game. I would like maybe a save feature in the future that saves your progress but no matter where you are, you start at the beginning of that level. Not at the beginning of the entire map. Something along those lines.
@@isadoregonzalez3016 i am someone who gets frustrated after dying and that i have to start all over again, but like you i am not into dark souls and all that difficult stuff so would you recommend me this game??

This game broke me, lol. Played for about 25 hours and made the call that roguelikes are just not for me. Great gameplay. Wild story/graphics. If it doesn’t give you an aneurysm, enjoy the ride!
Im enjoying this game quite a bit. There is one HUGE gameplay mechanic that takes what could be a slog and turns it into nice paced experience with focused exploration. The map shows you the paths forward so instead of roaming around lost, you always know which ways youve gone, could go, and should go depending on your goals. This was a genius move by Housemarque. In fact, the entire map mechanic it so well done, it takes the gameplay from good to great. The one negative, and this seems to be a point of contention with the typical twitter psychos who hate video games and want them to suck for weird spiteful reasons--- why make the main character a charisma-less, ugly, black hole of personality. I dont understand why you would spend so much thought and energy creating such an interesting world and then make the character you spend all your time with so bland and repellent. Its a consequential decision in the overall success of the game. Some people will bounce off Returnal, because there is nothing magnetic about the main character to keep you engaged if the initial gameplay loop doesnt instantly grab you. When you dont care about the main character, the story is often automatically a failure. Its a video game, i dont want to play as my aunt ethel. Otherwise, it seems like a success......so far -- I guess my final grade is still pending, but im enjoying Returnal as an overall experience.
I guess it’s kinda valid saying her character is bad but complaining about her being ugly? Seriously? Not every female character in existence needs to be models.

You're able to suspend the game giving you the closest thing to a save that you can get. It saves your spot in the current run but won't allow you to keep playing and will tell you to go to the home screen and close the game. Once you like to play again you can pick up where you left off to not lose a long run

Been a while since I've been blown away by a game like this. The sound, the visuals. I find myself admiring the beauty in the middle of intense battles. It's awesome really. As for the save system. Put yourself in the shoes of the character. She's frustrated, you're frustrated. It's really not even that bad. The "permanent" items you accrue allow you to get to places you couldn't get before and makes it feel like you are always moving forward even when you die. I think it's ingenious really. It really is well thought out and forces you to make smart choices on your item choices. Really, really cool game.
Who's hollow? The game is unforgiving, it's definitely a decent game, but not sure it's for me personally. I'm just not into Souls like difficulty games! If there were difficulty options, I'd persist but with limited gaming time, I can't waste hours & hours of running around & not progressing through the campaign!
Honestly my favorite aspect of the game and find kinda overlooked in reviews is the 3D audio - it’s incredible! You need the 3D headphone which isn’t an option for some I understand, but seriously the 3D sound is incredibly immersive. You can actually hear where enemies are and not just like a general direction like left or right side. I mean you hear enemies that are lurking above and behind to the right lol. Idk it could be a weird comparison but it reminds of the first time I watched Avatar in 3D and how in awe I was - but for your ears! Seriously it’s game changing lol. Theres something incredibly gripping about when you enter a new area and the enemies appear on screen and the eerie and intense soundtrack builds up and the almost real life roar of of aliens as they swarm you. I’d say if you can afford it play it with 3D headphones I can’t rave highly enough about it!
@@KingMierda Three reasons (at least for me) that you should buy headphones verses surround sound. One, headphones cut out all other sounds and you are more likely to hear actual positions of the 3D. For example, it is a bit harder to hear things above or below you with a standard 5.1 surround sound because you only have speakers behind and in front of you. Standard 7.1 surround sound is a little better, but it still doesn't hit your ears the same. You can spend allot of money to get expensive Dolby ATMOS surround sound which detects room reverberations and adjust sound to create an immersive experience creating 3D sound above and below, but that brings me to my next point. Two, head phones are cheaper to get 3D experience. A pair of Pulse Headphones is $100, with more expensive 3D phones costing up to $300+ for Steelseries headsets, while a smart Dolby ATMOS surround sound system can cost anywhere from $500 to upwards of $1500 for a good system. Three (and this is mostly just for people like me), Headphones can't be heard by the people around you. They work well to give you an amazing sound experience while being silent for your neighbors or family members. There is something to be said about hearing explosions and destruction all around you only to have utter silence when you take them off. I remember the first time I started using headphones because I wanted to game late at night in an apartment and I got tired of my wife getting mad the TV was too loud while she was sleeping. It was eery hearing all this loud chaos around me playing Mass Effect and look around to see everyone sleeping. Every time explosions happened I had to look over to make sure my wife didn't wake up to the noise, only to remember I was the only one immersed.
@@finalfant111 I don’t the noise problem with family or neighbours but I played a while with Ghost of Tsushima with the PS5 headphones and it’s just not the same as my B&W 5.1 system.
I would love if you could save mid-cycle so I don't have to sit down for 2-5 hours to make substantial progress and not be afraid to lose hours to progress simply because I had something come up and had to quit mid-cycle, causing all my progress to be lost.

It's so refreshing for a new game to be good, we've had a few rough launches because of the pandemic, so its just nice to get a win, even if its not your kind of game
Yeah it just works right out the box. No b.s. DLC or monetization. Nothing missing. It's just all there. It all works. It's all polished. And it's pretty damned good.
This is the first time I've gone through some of your reviews, and this one was the litmus test (for me) on your judgment. I saw that this game was acclaimed, etc. and checked it out last year. This was the only game I have rage-quit and have such deep animosity of. First of all when you start a game and the first thing they say is it is meant to be a "challenging" game, you may say "Uh oh, just how challenging?" It's very easy to die in this game, and it's absolutely infuriating after awhile to make such progression and to start all the way from the beginning again (and again and again...). Your comment about "you need to know what you're getting into" is spot-on. All said, if your weapon didn't reset each time you die I could handle that, but even with the randomization, it does get old. The astronaught suit is a must to even get a second life. This game is for those that are very patient. I've endured just about everything to progress and platinum in a game; this game absolutely broke me. I don't recommend it unless your temperament is very good and you don't mind extreme repetitiveness.
Couldn't said it better. It is hard, but imo not frustratingly hard. The more i get to know about it, the better i think about it. Honestly, Demon's Soul's Remake or Code Vein were much more frustrating than this Game.
Thanks for this video, I really wanted to play this, but am not a Dark Souls guy. You convinced me to wait (and wait and wait) for a GOOD sale ($29 this week!)
I'm so glad that this game is getting massive love. It deserves it. I, personally, won't be getting it unless there's a sale or something due to the lack of save. I was all in on this game until I heard that. There's other roguelikes with saves, so don't jump on me.
This game is truly addicting! Just picked this game up and played the first few hours and loving it so far. Between PS5, duelsense controller and the Pulse 3D headset, its very easy to feel immersed into the gameplay!
I hope capcom makes lost planet franchise again. I think that game is more forgiving and probably something I would enjoy more. This is fun don’t get me wrong but it’s like demons souls with restarting from the beginning and no check points.

Probably original. You could try and recreate it. It sounds like one of the simple soundwave synth sounds, 4 notes ascending, with a delay[echo] effect.
Every "issue" just sounds like most rogue lites. The random items that will either help or hinder your run, the lack of auto save, the hard first boss, etc.. players really should know what they are getting into with this genre.
Picked this up here in late 2022 and loving it, now in the second biome. Seems like waiting a bit was good as now you can "suspend your cycle" officially in the game instead of having to go into rest mode. So challenging, so fun, so good to look at (and hear with Steelseries Arctic 7P+ headphones, the 3d audio is amazing )
@@SAIMON--rf6kj It means your progress is saved in a run so you can quit the game. When Returnal was first released it didn't have this feature, so if you died or turned off your PS5, you'd have to start a brand new run each time. Players were putting their PS5s in Rest Mode so they didn't lose progress.
Personally I don't play with games where the difficulty is notched up (see Souls-like games) and when I read that returnal won't have a save function, I really gave it a hard thought before pre-ordering. And after a steep learning curve and roughly 20 hours into the game. I would recommend it. The gameplay itself is really fun and once you overcome the challenges its highly satisfying.

Something watching you from high places? Hmmm I never noticed anything like that
Dejan Lukic well the easiest way to see it without spoiling would be in Crimson waste in the first area, but I’ve found it in over grown forest as well. It’s just 10$ more... not that crazy lol. Housemarque makes amazing games and this game is top tier and worth every penny

Great gameplay. Wild story/graphics. If it doesn’t give you an aneurysm, enjoy the ride!
Sounds like ur bad at video games

I LOVE THIS GAME! This makes me sweat like Doom Eternal does.
Do you have a proper surround system? If you do why would you use the pulse headphones? I own both but not this game yet, the no save makes me doubt.
@@KingMierda Also, the save thing has been patched. They have a "quick save" feature now.
@@finalfant111 That’s great, thanks for the info

Where can you call and reserve an order? I don’t know any retailer, at least in the states, that had pre-orders after the initial batch. I don’t even know anywhere you can “call.” At best you are ordering online if you in the right spot at the right time.
@@stuartbagley2586 dude there are scalpers with bots auto licking at light speed to sell them back at prices that may as well be a brand new gaming PC you buy
Just finished this game, and holy hell it was awesome. I’m glad I took a chance on this game, it was my first roguelike and it was an amazing first impression for that genre and for Housemarque.
If you enjoyed this you will definitely enjoy Binding of Isaac
Play Hades! Incredible game and as the other comment on this thread said, definitely play Isaac too! Roguelike games and very different to each other but damn they’re very good!
I think it is great as soon as played it and realized right away she was in an a cycle where she can’t escape, and little things I haven’t encounter in a while in other games for a while up to certain extents. Pretty fun, and I do love the speed it is set too and can run or walk.
5:30 I got strong PT vibes
It's so refreshing for a new game to be good, we've had a few rough launches because of the pandemic, so its just nice to get a win, even if its not your kind of game
Yeah it just works right out the box. No b.s. DLC or monetization. Nothing missing. It's just all there. It all works. It's all polished. And it's pretty damned good.
@@vulpinemachine There have been reports of crashes today on Push Square. Are you playing via disc or digital ?
@@robsmall6466 I have the disc. I wonder if that makes a difference. Hmmm.
@@vulpinemachine Hope so. I'd like to try the game one day. I like the sci fi setting
Fuck every roguelike game
Quick tip, the astronaut artifact will be your best friend!
And the parasite and artifact that auto heal on low health
Honestly it’s not easy. But most of the time it’s not too frustrating. It’s a TON of fun
Finally got my ps5! Searching for the perfect game, any suggestions? Love 1 player story games!
Minecraft
Just got mine too (4days ago). And now that I have my settings and everything transferred…..thinking of purchasing Returnal.
demon souls
Ratchet and clank ❤️
This game is truly addicting! Just picked this game up and played the first few hours and loving it so far. Between PS5, duelsense controller and the Pulse 3D headset, its very easy to feel immersed into the gameplay!
Daaamn
this remembers me with Lost Planet, anyone has the same feeling?
I hope capcom makes lost planet franchise again. I think that game is more forgiving and probably something I would enjoy more. This is fun don’t get me wrong but it’s like demons souls with restarting from the beginning and no check points.
I need the opening sound effect. I’ve wanted it for years. Seriously. Someone hook it up
Get audacity and then just use a "UA-cam to mp4" site and then you can drop the mp4 straight into audacity and then just trim the clip to get the opening audio
@@Mattstiless well yeah I’ve done that for music for years 😂 I’m just wondering where this guy got it from
@@FiveLeefClovr idk why channels are so stingy with that stuff. They never reply to comments like this, like telling people risks national security or something
Probably original. You could try and recreate it. It sounds like one of the simple soundwave synth sounds, 4 notes ascending, with a delay[echo] effect.
Every "issue" just sounds like most rogue lites. The random items that will either help or hinder your run, the lack of auto save, the hard first boss, etc.. players really should know what they are getting into with this genre.
hades has auto-save so i hate you
@@dappitydingdong1219 I wouldn't waste too much energy on that. I hate myself for the both of us.
Picked this up here in late 2022 and loving it, now in the second biome. Seems like waiting a bit was good as now you can "suspend your cycle"
officially in the game instead of having to go into rest mode.
So challenging, so fun, so good to look at (and hear with Steelseries Arctic 7P+ headphones, the 3d audio is amazing )
Thank you, but can you please clarify this "suspended your cycle" thing a bit more?
@@SAIMON--rf6kj It means your progress is saved in a run so you can quit the game. When Returnal was first released it didn't have this feature, so if you died or turned off your PS5, you'd have to start a brand new run each time. Players were putting their PS5s in Rest Mode so they didn't lose progress.
@@acridyd thank you!
Love this game. Fast paced shooter. It kinda reminds me of a Metroid game in a way. Nice review.
Just finished the first playthrough just now. I would say this is way harder than souls games. If you end up liking and recommending this your can totally enjoy souls-likes as well. Any progress you make in those games are significantly more permanent and the learning curve works similarly.
I literally searched for this like 5 minutes ago, thanks for reading my mind! 😉
