"I’m looking at taking a step into the hybrid market.
"I am certainly not ready to make the leap into an EV, so the HEV/PHEV option seems to be a reasonable stepping stone. Though the PHEV seem to be several $ks more expensive (and more limited in availability)."
[This is because the batteries and electrical motors are bigger - they do more work. Batteries are expensive.]
"I have a trade in - a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS, 60k odometer. A car I inherited from my father earlier this year. It is too big for my needs."

I know a fleet operator who swears by hybrid Camrys. In Perth they are almost as fuel efficient as my Mazda 3 diesel without the deal breaking DPF and EGR durability issues. He finds them to be a very well sorted, well engineered package. He finds that they do very high mileage with minimal maintenance. About as exciting as catching the bus but a lot more convenient.

Just bought a Toyota Yaris Cross base model (save for tinted windows and a tow bar don't laugh) replacing my trusty last model Echo a truly brilliant car. It's almost 4 weeks old and I can't believe how good it is. The technology is for me, mind blowing, it's quiet to the point of almost silent (the fan is louder), it's averaging 3.7/100, it's very comfortable to drive and cost 34K with extras and floor mats thrown in....as a support worker I'm in and out of the car all day everyday, for me it's a dead set winner! great vid btw.

I agree re the value of Ryobi tools. As a home DIY'er old retired dude, I have a mix of some very good professional brands plus some weekend warrior stuff. I absolutely love my selection of professional quality Metabo 18V tools - drills, impact driver, jigsaw, and angle grinder which are very well featured and well balanced but I equally, if not more, love my 36V Ryobi gardening tools and some attachments - mower, line trimmer, cultivator attachment, long articulated hedge trimmer attachment, chainsaw, long pole branch trimmer, leaf blower. All of these Ryobi gardening tools duplicate a bunch of petrol driven tools which now spend their days resting in my shed. However, the convenience of using them outstrips any other consideration and the Ryobi warranties and Bunning's willingness to replace a broken Ryobi tool even when it is a few months out of warranty is brilliant. I especially recommend the 32V, 14" chainsaw. You would be surprised what this machine can do with, say, a hardwood brush box log. Just as efficient on such a log as a petrol chainsaw but much quieter, safer and easier to use. Not good for constant use though because the battery needs recharging every now and then so petrol is more efficient in that regard for pros.
John, we bought a Lexus CT200h three years ago and love it. We live in Beerwah on the Sunny Coast, one hour from Brissie. In this situation the hybrid is nice for short and longer runs but I wouldn’t want to drive to Cairns or Sydney in it.

Owned a second-hand 2019 Hyundai Ioniq plug in hybrid for about 1000km now. Averaging 0.3L/100km since taking ownership. Charging off the rooftop solar in about 2.5hrs. Wife uses it for work travel. 60km range on full EV mode is just about right for day-to-day commuting. Can't wait for plug-in hybrid dual cab utes to come out!

7:48 driving a hybrid is nothing to do with doing the right thing. It's about a more pleasant driving experience, it's about no petrol or oil smell in the cabin, it's about not having a rumbling engine chundering away the whole time, it's about the fact that your hard earned dollars aren't finding their way to a Saudi Aramco bank account, it's about the pretty decent acceleration when the hybrid battery is at full charge, it's about the smooth ride you get from it, it's about having to visit the petrol station 1/3rd less of the time, it's about less wear and tear on the engine and not having to visit a mechanic so much. That's what it's about.
I'm not sure what sort of shit box you've been driving, but most modern cars don't have any of those limitations.

Hi John, I own and owned quite a number of Camry Hybrids for company sales reps, trustworthy boring economical reliable, but with such exciting resale. Over the years I've collected three phone numbers that I promise to call as they come out of lease. I actually look forward to selling them, money in the bank without inspection, buyer organises a truck to collect. I'd recommend the Camry Hybrid.

My brother was an apprentice heavy vehicle mechanic in the 70's. On his meagre wage he bought the biggest set of AF/metric spanners & socket set he could. One day the foreman told him to fix that Landrover just been towed in. That's when the fun started, It was Whitworth !
Apart from being a fairly big Toyota fan, I loved my 3 months with the Camry hybrid is because it was hands down the smoothest car I've ever driven, the combination of the 2.5 CVT and electric motor were flawless, and the interior was fabulous, and all this for €12k less than a base model Audi A6

G'day John. Might be covering old ground from last night, but posting anyway. Japanese engineers developed their own cross-point design similar to that of the Phillips®. The Japanese cross-point drivers also have the self-centering and quick tool and screw engagement, however the “JIS” (Japanese Industrial Standard) design allowed torque and over-tightening to be controlled by the operator and not at the head of the screw. This key difference is why Phillips screwdrivers cannot properly engage \"JIS” (Japanese Industrial Standard) screw Seems a bit like Ph vs Posidriv.

I went for a Hybrid RAV4 Cruiser for multiple reasons.
I appreciate the instantaneous power from the electric motor with the 2.5L petrol, It's not insanely quick but it's a nicely refined vehicle.
I love the design of both exterior and interior,
Opting to pay an extra $8k for the range topping hybrid came with beautiful black rims which I would have dished out for anyway, It offers a higher resell value when the time comes to sell.
I have a mix of urban driving where the electric motor runs solo quite often throughout town and Country road driving where there is a lot of "rolling" and braking.
I'm averaging 6L/100km which is more than the EPA rating, but still enough for my personal saving and justifiable for the extra $3k for the actual portion of the hybrid tech.
I've had my RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser a bit over 3 weeks now. I'm also getting 6L/100km and waiting for it to dip to 5.9L. Love this car! I have more then halved my fuel cost from my Captiva turbo diesel. 90km round trip to work and home on mostly country roads. So good :)

Hi John, I have watched many of your videos and although not being an Engineer myself I did HSC Physics (and I am a retired VACC motor mechanic). Therefore I can follow all of your logics and the facts that you present. In this particular video you mention how a hybrid car takes advantage of the dynamic braking to salvage some of the energy of momentum. You assert that this is only of benefit in the suburban driving mode and of little consequence in the country driving situation. Having owned a current model Camry Hybrid Ascent Sport for two and a half months and covered more than 4,600 kilometres, I can tell you, that because we don't live in Holland we have many undulating highways and hills in the country regions. Our Camry Hybrid is very often going downhill on a highway with the Atkinson Engine turned off and dynamic charging occurring.
Our real world fuel consumption average, tank to tank, since new, has been 4.6 l/100km. The Kia Seltos you mention claims around 7.6l/100km. Our Camry did 952km on it's first ever tank of Toyota complimentary fuel and this equates to 62 mpg (imperial)
It is a large car with associated comfort and very quiet. We paid $41k (on the road), as it is not easy to bargain when there is a worldwide new car supply shortage. We definitely get the feel good factor of excellent fuel economy.
Best of all, it is a great all round car, both for long distance and for shopping duties and has Toyota reliability and resale reputation. I hope I haven't made many spelling errors or grammar glitches as I am doing this on my phone. I really like watching your videos and recommend you try a Camry Hybrid for a week or so.

Diesel: I have recently changed to Diesel as I got fed up with the unleaded rise and fall every month or so. a full tank in the family car and run to the office would not last a fortnight. Diesel, I need it i go get it. Petrol was keep it above a 1/4 and top up till the prices did the 30 to 40 cent price drop.
I am now in the market for a small second family car for the run about and i have considers returning to Petrol as I believe going forward I will have a monthly cycle

I bought a torque wrench for the boot of my car on your advice and the 17mm socket required for the nuts. This is so I can tighten the nuts to the stated torque. Everyone needs their nuts in the right place.
The hybrid "highway fuel cycle" (in respect to the Toyota) is very efficient, yes, due to the Atkinson and the CVT and other measures, but importantly they can only be had with the hybrid model, and it is still a fuel and cost saving - you can't buy an Atkinson ICE only Camry. Also recouped energy can be available not only from heavy city traffic, but more so from free moving traffic in urban areas where traffic lights and stop signs are a plenty and where more energy is shed from higher attained speeds, the frequent 60/80km/h to stop. Maybe a hybrid would not suit being a pure country or highway car, but most everywhere else it seems good value to me (from Toyota at least, and I'm not speaking as a cardigan wearer).
As to the "nasty" little runarounds, it's such a shame we don't have incentives for "nice" city cars like Japan utilises in the Kei class. Governments could offer discounts or registration sharing for owners so to have two cars but to only use one at a time, the lump for the weekend destinations and the buzz box for weekly grind. A number plate identifying for weekends and holidays, or a quick release plate that can be swapped from car to car - it's all possible, but politicians - no imagination at all.

9:30 "A great deal of additional money for" a hybrid? No, not a great deal at all. The price difference in the Camry hybrid and petrol is about 2 grand. If you drive a fair amount you make that 2 grand back in about 9 months. Thereafter you're saving money, driving a more reliable car, one that's quieter, smoother and less expensive to run.
Yes and you will get that back in resale when it comes time to sell

In one way hybrids are simpler, because for Toyota at least, you never have to touch the engine. The only thing I've ever needed to do on my Prius is recondition the HV battery.
I drive a 2016 3l deisel turbo Hiace (big one) part time as a passenger shuttle with trailer. Just passed 500,000 km and no major repairs required. The secret is regular maintenance.
I am a tradie , a commercial pool plumber and I have been using AEG tools daily for 5 years, zero issues.
GPS enabled EPIRB John. For heading bush a GPS enabled PLB might be a better option. Pocket size compact so take it bushwalking etc.
John, exactly as you mooted about hybrid ownership, we have two cars, a fully loaded Shogun with all the comforts for long distance / towing, and a small Lexus ct hybrid which as you say is a luxury small car. My wife drives the lexus and loves it, does about 30 miles per day and gets well over 50mpg, but it wasn't cheap, 16k (uk beans) and four years old, but low mileage and like a new car. Hybrid ownership here is completely polarised, some loathe them (as they're not really that green) but as a cheap to run car it's great. However, out of reach new to us and indeed second hand to many people. A cheap hybrid (if it could be made) would be ideal, but even a small toyota yaris hybrid starts at £19,340 (35,585 AUD).
When I was in school and I don’t mean college. In metalwork class, we had to learn and were expected to be able to recognise one thread from another. So if you were handed a nut or a bolt or threaded bar. You could make a corresponding bolt or nut for it. We learned the different look, sizes and uses for such threads as, BS: British Standard, BSF: British Standard Fine, BSC: British Standard Course, AS: American Standard, AF: American Fine, Whitworth, etc... and the new fangled metric.
Similar but not as complex in woodwork. We learned and were expected to be able to order by type, size/s and weight/s. Of all screws for any job. If you took metalwork and woodwork and there weren’t the correct screws in stock. We were expected, to be able to turn and make such as was needed. I was 13-14yrs. old when I could recognise any thread/screw. And 14yrs. when I could make any nut or bolt or screw needed.
But that was in an age, when schools were still allowed to entrust a kid with scissors and a bottle of glue, to make or fix things.
JC, your views on the merits of hybrid vehicle ownership are spot on. If a person's regularly driving in stop-start traffic, there might be a case for a hybrid, but some of the so-called hybrids available now are pure window-dressing. I'm particularly looking at you Subaru, with your Forester e-Boxer. This hybrid's battery capacity is less than 0.6 kWh. That's around a half to a third of a cranking battery's capacity. And it would probably occupy a volume of about 3 litres. Why Subaru needed to dispense with the spare wheel to accomodate it is beyond me. Bryan/Brian should keep the Outlander for a couple more years and then get an EV, when there's more choice in the market. The ACT's electricity is 100% renewable now, so plugging it in every night will be as green as you'll get.
I'd thought the hybrid efficiency on freeway/highway is also due to the eCVT (in Toyota, using a planetary gear system), which is more efficient than traditional CVT, together with Atkinson cycle engine and computer management of charge/discharge battery to maximize the efficiency. The key point is that hybrids are not only about recuperating energy loss from braking. the computer system also manage the battery power to charge & drive the motor in a way to maximize the efficiency at constant freeway / highway speed.
All facts based common sense. Added bonus is that John has a sense of humour, unlike most Americans.

Re: EVs and Hybrids - yeah, I have considered it but I'll stick with my shitbox CVT equipped Swuft (correct spelling in Sheepshagistan), a bit longer as I'm not convinced a hybrid will fit. I wish the manfacturers would wake up and make poverty spec versions for yer average sheepshagga.
Here's a solution for Mustang owners: remove the back seats. The chillibins can go safely in the SUV instead. I've driven a late Mustang a few times. It's okay (no good on low speed limited roads - talk about excess baggage). Build quality is right up there with my Swuft.
i live in bangkok, and the reason i will be buying the Toyota corolla cross is for the fuel efficiency. the traffic is just crazy.

While the fuel consumption numbers might not be 100% attributable to the hybrid engine, they are still better than the CRV or CX5 from what I can see. I don't own any of these cars, but could you not make the argument that the hybrid is more efficient and, therefore, better for the environment? Obviously, driving conditions, which you mentioned, play a large role. I noticed you also preferred the CX5 over the CRV, mainly on power numbers. However, if you want to maximise space and fuel economy, would the hybrid Rav4 not be the best option between these three? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
i got a hybrid and i think its good ,fuel usage is in half almost and most of a time in town it just perfect most of a trip in town done on battery , for me it is more then i expected ... if my brother ask me what car to buy next, i would say ... hybrid 100% ,forget battery only (for now ,unless they get cheaper ), today i done more then 200 km with bearly 1/4 of a tank of petrol ... it gets less then 5L to 100 Km ...it better then only petrol engine, it used more then 8L /100Km (im not a fan of diesel ... smells bad ) my old car used about 8.7L i just rounded to 8 but corolla hybrid showed 4.2L/100Km but i not trust this much and fill a tank again .... and my trip took less then 10 L of petrol so its good for me ... i would say ... but on other hand acceleration not like you drive some old mitsubishi fto (fto been faster ) ... but on other hand corolla will save me on petrol (nearly 2000 euro a year ... i hope )
On Ioniq if you press view you will get the back camera to see the rear view on the 10.25 inch screen rather than using the rear view mirror

Two blokes at work, each bought a Rav4. One went hybrid, one didn't. Both drive 60km on hwy to work each day. Be intersting to compare fuel economy.
On hybrids, why hasn't the tech that was used in the Chev/Holden Volt taken off ? That seems to make more sense.
There are plenty of those on the road in Europe . Opel Ampera and Chevy Volt but also BMW i3. But they were expensive when new. Those cars were only succesful because the buyer was eligable for government subsidies.
my first hybrid was perfect in heavy suburban melbourne traffic, yes we did some long distance driving but mostly it was short trip, stop start. In its last few years of it's life (after 12 years of ownership) it was mostly 35km am and 35km pm work/home travel on open road. Was not as emotionally satisfying. I would have replaced by all electric if there was anything able to have been purchased either near work or home but mid-north coast NSW does not have all electric dealership in any brand.
I grew up with having to understand the different sizing between witworth metric an sccross the flat aka AF SO ON MY EARLY SPANNERS AND SOCKETS , IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO CRACK IT BUT IT WAS WORTH IT sorry about the caps scrwed key board
Our Hybrid RAV4 is 1 year old now and all my research before purchase was online.
Our trade in RAV4 was 10 years old.
All current RAV4 have the same safety features across the range so that part was easy.
Since the Minister of War and Finance would be the main pilot {i took myself off the road due to health reasons} obviously happy wife happy life she had recently hired a Mitsu Outlander {friends also own one} so it was on her list.
Test drove a RAV4 AWD {i only wanted FWD as our previous RAV was AWD didnt see the benefit overall}
Test vehicle was NOT the base model but it had a few more features and creature comforts so it got the nod {out the window went all my financial math}
As i am TPI we paid no GST, got the trade in price increased, so called 'free' extras in the end the price difference from the base model was more than affordable.
I did initially contact John via the form but we went out of the market not long after that, came back in when my situation got sorted.
Interesting post. I own a Lexus ES300h (basically a luxury Toyota Avalon with a Camry hybrid drive system). I drive 90% open road (100 - 110 Kph) but still get between 6 and 6.7 litres per 100Km, (depending on load and how I am driving) exactly the same as I get in towns and cities. I do not see the loss of benefit not driving in towns/cities.
It would be more economical on the open road without the hybrid system.
@@AutoExpertJC Non-Hybrid model for the 2015 year would be 6 cylinder 2.5 engine (non-Atkinson cycle). Would that do better that 6 to 6.5 l/100Km? I am open to persuasion, but remain somewhat doubtful

Conpletely agree with the cheap hybrid/EV idea; I'd assume that most people who these types of cars appeal to are swayed by the idea of saving money, hence expensive/luxury vehicles are irrelevant to many buyers of this nature. Then again, something like a G-Wiz or an electric Mirage is not something I'd be seen dead in, and the buying trend these days is skewed towards SUVs, so that could be the reason they're not available here yet.
Could you explore the love affair manufacturers have with the 2.0 litre engine? They are in everything.

Ceramic coating seems a lot like the rustproofing they sell here in the frozen North. In the old days when cars were rustbuckets, it was easy to sell this stuff because the included warranty sounded so good. But most people did not know that the warranty only covered rust-THROUGH and required frequent inspections and immediate repair of any any surface rust at the owner's expense. If you did this, you wouldn't need the warranty. Now that most cars are thoroughly rust-proofed, it makes no sense at all but people still buy it.
Other scams included the polymer coating that dealers sold for 20 times what it actually cost you to do yourself with a spray can you could buy and which wore off in months. Then there is the seat protector package which is a can of spray-on Teflon that you can also do yourself for a fraction of the price. Just don't inhale the fumes and let the car air out for a few days before driving.
I wonder a bit about whether paint protection/ceramic coat stuff is required or not because you see a lot of not all that old cars, usually in dark colours, driving around with their clear coat pealing off all the horizontal surfaces. I've pretty much decided on only having white cars because of this, I've never seen a white car with its clear pealing off. My theory, perhaps obviously, being that dark cars are soaking up the sun, getting hotter, and it's ruining the paint. I mean maybe I'm just not seeing the clear pealing off white cars because it doesn't stand out, maybe it's something else entirely, I dunno. It still remains though that there are a lot of not so old cars with completely trashed paintwork getting around. For reference I'm in Central Queensland, the sun takes itself seriously up this way.

As I get older, I'm less concerned about how a car looks and more aware of the fit and function I.E. is it "fit for purpose"... The wife has had a couple of i30s (incl the super sporty SR variant).. Guess I'm just coming through to say, YES I agree, we use the Subaru as the longer trip 'tourer' and the i30 for local jobs - although this becomes problematic as my wife doesn't like me in her i30. Thankfully she has no issues with taking my Suby. Agree 100% with your commentary on Canberra. Most routine driving is done at the speed limit (80kph) on cruise control in top gear. Manual transmission is perfectly adequate here. Hybrids are expensive resources that should be used where they are efficient. That's not Canberra.
Actually the hybrid at Highway speeds plays a useful role when overtaking, at least in an old gen2 Prius, the electric motor gives you a nice boost when you neeed to overtake. The power is there when you really need it.
Yep, and around 30-50km/hr also has fantastic acceleration in a gen2 Prius when the battery is at full.

STANDARD.. Is engine braking / down shifting to decelerate a bad thing? Does doing this cause premature wear on a clutch or other parts that are more expensive to replace then brake pads? When approaching a red light or traffic congestion I have a habit of down shifting instead of stepping on the brake pedal. Guess trying to get the most out of the experience of driving a standard. Is engine braking the same for cars / trucks / and motorcycles all? I also do this on my motorcycle and now the clutch is slipping. What's your expert opinion, clutch / transmission for accelerating and brakes for braking, or is it ok to down shift and hear the engine roar as you decelerate? Yes I know standard is almost dead now, and yes I know without stepping on the brake the brake lights won't come on. Please tell me what I don't know, but should. THANKS
love the mid sedan size design and plush ride offered by the proven design of the honda accord hybrid with its nearly 50mpg and total combined 212 horsepower of power output; does not feel small inside for a gas hybrid sedan just under $30K is a decent and fair equitable price not to bad of a price premium over the internal combustion engine regular honda accord; back seat is large and not cramped at all which is always nice for passengers that ride in ones car; if one drives and holds onto one's car for at least ten years then it's probably going to be a more than a worthwhile return on investment for the typical car vehicle sedan buyer; saving money on gas while also cutting down on potential internal combustion engine maintenance and repair expense costs quite dramatically while one owns one car over a ten-year or more time span interval typically; which is a very much higher efficiency engine design.
I reccomend Kia Niro, without plug in ! It handles well, enough power and you don t have to worry about charging it... i studied the market an entire year, tried several models... KIA NIRO IS THE BEST ! Without plug in ! Couse the plug in is more expensive and you always carry an unnecessary weight with you...

I had to deal with an Uncle Joe here in Texas...called me out for left hand threads...was told 'no such thing', you don't know what you are saying!!! Two years in trade school for machine shop training, four years pounding out a degree all the while running a machine tool company, and I am the idiot.
Here in UK I bought an ex Ambulance and found out the hard way when I was trying to change a flat they have left hand threads on one side of the vehicle. Health and Safety gone mad ?, you wouldn't want the wheels coming of whilst being taken at speed to Hospital tho😊.👍👍
I drive a 2010 Toyota Hybrid. Cheap, verry fuel efficient, low maintenance, full options and can't break down. Really a no brainer. 😁 If you have the money, go for a Prius Plugin Hybrid, the Corolla Hybrid or a RAV4 Hybrid. Forget all others.
I'd consider a RAV4 hybrid, but hopefully the new hybrid Kluger will be here soon enough.

In his case, the best option is probably a full-on plugin hybrid like the chevy/holden volt. Unfortunately not available new anymore and in Australia not properly supported. It has the range o an EV to allow you to have an EV only trips charged at home for most local journeys around Canberra, while hybrid engine allows normal ACT to Melbourne, Sydney or further trips.
I agree, but you would have to be a full-on nut to buy a Volt today. It was an abject failure in Australia.
@@AutoExpertJC Yes, it's unfortunate that GM came up with the concept, did a decent implementation and then dropped the marketing ball. No other company has picked the same concept up yet. But the concept of a medium EV only range capable plugin hybrid is a good one. Great for 1 car households that can charge the car, and suits smaller regional cities where there are regular long trips to larger centres.
