Unless Shell is the same price or cheaper than your cheapest local gas, you're overpaying for gas. You probably have an older car with carbon buildup on the injectors/spark plugs. All you need is a $5 fuel additive once in a while that will give you the same results.
I filled up at Shell today for the first time in many years, because of Scotty’s Post. I usually go to a no name station. I’ll post something later if I notice a difference.
@@captinbeyond That 92 octane probably makes a difference. That happened to me way back in the summer of 2008 when the *lowest* gas prices hit $3.89/gal in Texas. Hello Scotty. I worked down the street from a oil change shop. And had many customers come in with rounded off dran plugs. I would take a very large nut. Fit it over the plug and might weld it from the center. Use a big wrench. Comes right off. Thanks for your shows.
I would say Costco is the best because it’s so busy all the time that they’re constantly getting fresh supply. Not to mention their pumps are always fast which is an indicator that they change out their filters regularly.
I've worked on cars 1963 when I was 5, not because I wanted to but my dad made me. "Hold the flashlight over here damnit, does it look like I'm working over there " it seemed like it would be all night.
I miss working on cars with my dad. I would pick him up on the way to the junk yard he loved junk yards. As soon as I would have to spray on blaster he would always say “now it smells like a shop in here”.
Scotty: Thanks as always and keep up the great work!! Having worked in the oil refining business for a major firm plus have known many friends in the oil industry would disagree somewhat with your take on this. You are correct as to gas quality from the major refiners. The key difference however between the majors and the "no names" is the additive package. One reason the gas from the "no names" is cheaper is this gas is often missing many of those additives. The so-called "Top Tier" gas (all major refiners such as Chevron, BP, Exxon, etc.) will give you cleaner intake valves with less deposits according to a friend with AAA when they evaluated different gasoline brands.
I made a shop replace the oil pan on my daughter's car when they stripped out the drain hole. The car was only like a year old. They tried to blame us but we took the car right back to them the day they did it.
Hey Scotty I was fueling up with Costco gas on a 2001 VW Jetta & it was stalling when I would go home from work a co worker told me to change my gas to Shell & I would see the difference with more better gas so I took his advice & I have been putting nothing but Shell 89 gasoline for about 3 years now & what you know that did the trick 👍🏻
I always fill up from top tier gas stations regardless of the brand. In my area, it happens to be Shell, Costco, and Co-Op as they are close to where I live.
A few years ago, a co-worker told me never to go to the off-brand gas stations, because they foam their gas so it seems like you are getting the volume of (liquid) gas you pump, but a lot of it is air. After you drive a while the bubbles go away and you have maybe half the volume of liquid gas that you paid for. She said she had run into this several times on long distance trips, near interstates.
I've only bought Shell gas for 15 years. Had an old car with a fuel neck grommet leak and had to make an emergency stop at some truck stop. Car ran terrible....had to drain the tank and fix the leak within 2 days
Hi Scotty, please create a book about everything, your knowledge about maintaining/repairing cars. I will definitely buy one without hesitation. Love your channel. 💕
Do you need a membership to get gas there though? I would get gas there all the time if I had one. But I guess if you already have a membership it's great haha
If it all comes from the same distribution point, how is it more " top tier " over others that put additives into the fuel like Chevron? If I run am/pm Arco in my carbureted vehicle it'll be black sooty inside. If I run Chevron, it'll be spotless clean. I would think that wouldn't be too good for injectors over time.
@@MrDLRu top tier is an industry standard that most but not all gasoline qualifies. Look for the symbol on the pump "Top Tier". Basically it just ensures that it has a "good" additives package. Premium fuel isn't worthwhile unless you need it. Seeking out top tier is good and generally doesn't cost more anyway. Eg. Costco gas is a top tier gas.

scotty my car has a vaccum leak and it sounds like its coming from the intake manifold. is it possible that the runners cracked and it needs to be replaced?
At Costco they put themselves the additives. I asked an employee once. But for my bike that needs premium gas, i go to Shell. V-Power here has no ethanol.
I always use the no ethanol premium for my small engines. Lawn mowers, boat motor, weed eater, etc. When that ethanol gas evaporates in the carb between uses it leaves a hard residue that builds up until it clogs jets and the carb in general.
Interesting you said to trust the high-side of the oil on the dipstick. I've changed my engines oil 100's of times over the years and every time I put the exact amount of oil in after a drain, the oil on the low side of the dipstick is always the correct side. The high side looks inconsistent and twice the height while the low side is perfectly solid to the top of the hash marks (or dot, or line, etc.).
I had a 2000 Mazda MPV that I used to dump the "whatever is 2 cents cheaper gas" and had nothing but emissions problems including a catalytic converter disintegrate at less than 80,000 miles and then finally intake manifold runners freeze due to carbon build up. My mechanic told me to use a higher quality gasoline like Shell and have used it ever since (15 years now) and have over 100,000 on 3 vehicles now without issues.....worth spending the "2 cents" more.....
We sold 3 different brands over the decades. Texaco, Amoco and Citgo. I could not tell the difference overall 8n any of them. Actually Citgo got the gas out of the local Marathon or Shell terminals. Since a Johnny come lately came and went with a new gas station across the street it was pretty much game over for us. Now I put whatever is cheaper in the tank and have had no issues. Gas is gas. Buy the octane.
Speaking of being over torqued, yesterday I was trying to loosen the lug nuts on a used pickup truck that we recently bought. The lug wrench would not budge them. I put a beam style torque wrench on it to see how high of a number I could get. I stopped at 150 lbs. Now I will have to use a breaker bar with a 'cheater pipe' on it to loosen them so I can torque them to the proper spec.
I find a difference with different brands of gasoline in In Canada. I get greater efficiency and power with Shell 91 VPower vs all the other brand we have. This was for my TSX. Even better then Sunoco/ petro Canada ultra 94. When I used Costco and other brands I would loose 50-120 km of range per tank. TSX required premium and I fed her that, after 420k still running sting on original power train and exhaust system. I do need to change the flex pipe but for now it has a nice sound. One thing I learned from this car is to replace regularly worn parts with high quality ones(ball joints, tie rods etc). My babe keeps running her name is Gurtrude
Chevron's additive makes a difference. I used to run am pm Arco fuel out here in Az as it was always the cheapest and the inside throat of my carbureted F100 would be sooty black. When I went to Chevron only, the inside throat of the carburetor remains spotless.
I'm a Shell V-power (93 octane) fan and various stations around the Midwest have always performed well. I tuned my SVT Focus with it and filled up with 93 from another (admittedly not popular brand) station once on the other side of Chicago and was pinging like crazy to the point the knock sensor was backing off timing to save the motor. Had to detune and run through the entire tank before I could reload the custom tune...and yes I tried an octane booster was a complete waste of 5 bucks did nothing even after driving a bit to prime the fuel line. Basically if you tune a vehicle on the edge of 93 octane (or using fuel that actually measures beyond 93 since that is only the MINIMUM guaranteed rating) you risk issues if you go to shitty fuel that is even slightly less octane than what you are tuned for.
Sometimes, the problem is cheap (non-taxable) additives like toluene (methyl benzene) that small operators use to secretly dilute the expertly prepared fuel.
Scotty is wrong on the gas thing. Saying all the gas is the same because it come from the same place is like saying all motor oil is the same since it all starts with petroleum. In both cases it is the additives that makes one better than the other. Top tier gas is definitely better gas than gas that is not top tier.
Or you get a huge amount of water at a gas station where no one buys 93 happened to me was in some small town in Oklahoma and after about 2 miles my car went into limp mode and wouldn’t go faster then like 15 mph
Scotty. To clarify. Look for the longest solid oil line going up either side of the stick and the top is your level. I check it three times at least to make sure it's correct. I check the trans fluid a lot more. Up to 20 times if necessary. Jpol.
Thank God i listened to Scotty and bought a 94' Celica that gets great gas mileage. I have a great car with no stupid car payment. Wait until gas hits a record high of 5 bucks a gallon this summer and people are unloading SUV's for pennies on the dollar.
Costco Australia sources all of its fuel from Mobil Australia. It's top quality, and cheaper than all others. It contains "deposit control additives" although Costco doesn't clarify whether all Mobil fuel does.
@@m17x4v7 -- I try to use it as much as possible in my 2017 Corvette Stingray and my girlfriend's 2019 Corvette Stingray. Top-tier 93 Octane premium! I only wish we could buy "ethanol free" gasoline, but it is not legal here outside of off-road LEADED racing fuel & aviation gas......or boat gasoline at a marina. 93 Octane is only around 15 cents a gallon more than 87 at Costco, but 80 cents to $1 more almost everywhere else. If I am not near Costco, I splurge for Shell or Valero - both of which are top-tier fuels.
Scotty-Believe it or not, Fred Haas Toyota in Cypress/Houston, Tx. stripped the oil pan of my wife’s Rav and refused to take responsibility for it. The service manager claimed that Toyota viewed it as normal wear and tear. So proud of their torque machines. I never returned and at the time we owned the Rav 4 and a Tacoma. Dolts.
I learned my lesson taking my vehicles to Fast Oil & Lube places they over torqued my drain plug and stripped it..I called corporate and they sent me a check for the cost of a new oil pan & labor ($500.00) went to Pep Boys & bought a oversized threaded drain plug for $4.00..
Sunoco in Canada used to have Sunoco Gold here - 94 Octane ... Highest in Canada. Petro-Can stations (wholly owned by Sunoco) still has some stations that sell it. GREAT STUFF - can really feel the difference.
@@99SVTBolt There is nothing wrong with using Sunoco, but the whole NASCAR element is all an advertising gimmick. If NASCAR had a marketing and endorsement deal with Sinclair, then that would be brand used for races and marketing. Sunoco happens to sell a good consumer grade product across the board, but the fuel used by NASCAR has unique specifications and is exclusive to them no matter which oil company is the "official" supplier at any given time.
@@glenholmgren1218 You do realize that "octane" has nothing to do with the "power" in gasoline, don't you? Any difference in performance is a placebo effect in your imagination.
@@gab3tipopop The Chevron the station I had used closed down due to FWY expansion so I began using Shell because they were closer than the next Chevron station. After about 6 months of use - my check engine light came on. It's a 95 Ford Escort (pre OBDII) and using a OBDI doesn't really tell you anything and I was too cheap to take it to a mechanic. So, I clean out the throttle-body (Seafoam) after-which I took it on the FWY for a bit. This helped for about 3 months and then the check engine light came on again... repeated the process with the seafoam, did the FWY thing again but this time I took it to a Chevron station further down the road and filled it up. Check engine light hasn't come back on yet and this was about a year and half ago. I guess the additives that Chevron uses (Techron) just works better in my Ford.
@@gab3tipopop it’s a 1995 Ford escort...I haven’t seen many that aren’t mangled, poorly maintained with 20k mile fill it back up “oil changes” and reek of PBR cans floating in the passenger floorboard. It’s realistically more likely the check engine light must’ve finally blown than the gas fixing the problem. Lmao.
I used to pick up pallets of fuel treatments from a chemical company in Buffalo. Funny thing was that the same additive was put in packaging for several brands....including competing brands!! Lol. Opened my eyes a long time ago.
Heard Costco goes hefty on additives in their fuel. They offer lower prices but a fair portion of each gallon is addictives. Places like shell will give you your money's worth.
Please clarify, Scotty. I have been using Costco gas because of the “Top Tier” claimed advantages. In 2021 does “Top Tier” supremacy really exist? Thanks, a longtime fan who doesn’t like to get snookered by Big Corporations.
Good question. But I assume if they're not being honest then every station be claiming their product as top tier also. Their gasoline supplier may also be ticked when they pay for only ordinary gas. What may be a greater issue is if their certification of calibration on their pumps are expired.
Top Tier additive packages have to pass extreme industry-standard testing. There is scientific data backing each pack before it goes to market. Although each company might have slightly different ingredients, they all pass testing and usually blow out the detergency (alkylate), friction modifiers and other stuff. For example, one company formulates and tests Costco, Shell and Exxon additive chemistries. It's manufactured at their plants and transported by railcar to the respective company facilities. This company also happens to make WD40
I think all modern pumps have cartridge filters in the pumps. I understand that sometimes, when one pump is slow, it is because it needs it's filter changed...
My friends bully me at school because I love ford trucks and they say they always break but of course, they like ram and chevy and... FIAT!!! LOL I'm gonna be laughin' my head off when they get one!
Stay away from people who have nothing better to discuss than the relative merits of one brand of car over another (not that there aren't differences) and I agree with Ron Rogers to an extent, although, I'm more of a Honda fan, but I do respect Toyota.
While the base stock is the same, its the proprietary additives that can make a difference. Costco is unique as its one of very few discount gas brands that are top tier certified as a top tier gas.
Buy the correct gas for your vehicle and try to get gas from a station that gets alot of business so you’re not getting old gas thats been sitting in the 1000 gallon tanks too long and you’ll be fine. Most all gas is basically the same except for non ethanol unleaded gas for boats and small engines.
Chevron is hands down the best and this was actually proven in a study that was done by some mechanics. The mechanics had two cars that were the same cars and each car tried different gas. They ran all sorts of tests and concluded that Chevron gas is the best for your car and your engine, and Shell came in second place from Chevron. Chevron will always be number one if they continue what they do by selling the best quality gas in the United States

Scotty is the best. However, all gas is not the same. Always look for “Top Tier” gas. It’s usually a sticker on the pump. It has much more detergent in the gas. I have an 06 BMW Z4. I bought it used and it got to the point it would not idle and was hard starting. Dealer said I needed to clean the injectors for $285. I found the top tier gas stations (BP, Shell, and yes Costco.) Four tanks later it runs like a champ. Now it’s all it gets. I heard that every other tank can be the other stuff but with Costco’s gas being that low cost, why would I use it?
Totally correct. All my local stations are supplied by the same Delek refinery, so the gas I buy at Sam's Club is the same as that from the Chevron station across the street (just much cheaper).
Not true in California, and I can't see it being true anywhere else. Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Shell all have their trade secrets including how they break down/refine gas. Worked at 4 of the 5 refineries in the Bay Area.
@@Defyfate11 The chemistry of cracking hydrocarbons via fractional distillation is the same everywhere. The end product is the same, with the additive package being the only variance.
I never could disagree on that. On my facebook group, a lot of members there are having fuel system problems (with the injectors i suppose) but only with 50k-60k miles on them. When I asked them about the fuel they use, neither of them used top tier. So I guess it has something to do with the fuel.
I commute 40K+ per year. Half the time I fill up at Costco. Occasionally, my car runs rough after filling up. I have never had this problem with Costco gas.
I think more people should read their car manual to see what gas they should use I mean when I got my car I checked it and it said don't use gas using MMT and use top tier detergent gas in north america and after some research shell plus mobile one gas station have some detergents in them prolonging the life of the engine
I ended up putting a catch can in my '93 B-series pickup because the Mazda G6 motor has issues with top end carbon build-up leading to hot deposits and pre-ignition ping. It catches a bit of oil and has kept my top end sparkly clean, but what surprised me most is how much condensation it catches. About 80% of what I dump out every couple of weeks is straight water.

Does your engine manufacturer specify 89 octane?
@@davidanderson8469 no just unleaded fuel gasoline only
How is your Jetta running now and are you using the same gas?
I mainly pump Shell premium for years now. My old 203K mile car runs great. If I'm feeling cheap I'll pump Costco premium.. car still runs great.
I always fill up from top tier gas stations regardless of the brand. In my area, it happens to be Shell, Costco, and Co-Op as they are close to where I live.
I drive 20 miles or so to get Costco gas, but I do live in BF Egypt
A few years ago, a co-worker told me never to go to the off-brand gas stations, because they foam their gas so it seems like you are getting the volume of (liquid) gas you pump, but a lot of it is air. After you drive a while the bubbles go away and you have maybe half the volume of liquid gas that you paid for. She said she had run into this several times on long distance trips, near interstates.
What about citco gas is any good ??

I get lower gas mileage at "no name" stations.
My grandpa was a Gulf dealer. I’ve had good luck with 76 recently. I think Shell is great fuel. I do not care for Arco AM/PM.
I've only bought Shell gas for 15 years. Had an old car with a fuel neck grommet leak and had to make an emergency stop at some truck stop. Car ran terrible....had to drain the tank and fix the leak within 2 days
I've always said, the more extras and fancy things you have on a car the more things can go wrong.
Hi Scotty, please create a book about everything, your knowledge about maintaining/repairing cars. I will definitely buy one without hesitation. Love your channel. 💕
Hello Scotty, Costco gas here in the Detroit area is always 10-20 cents cheaper per gallon than the other stations. And it's top tier gas.
Quik Trip, Kwik Trip, and Costco - people might think is cheap gas, are all Top Tier gas.

I'll have to check but I think it does in my state. Citco definitely does not here.
I always use the no ethanol premium for my small engines. Lawn mowers, boat motor, weed eater, etc. When that ethanol gas evaporates in the carb between uses it leaves a hard residue that builds up until it clogs jets and the carb in general.
It sure has ethanol in my state. The only one without ethanol in my area is one Citgo station.

Ive been using shell since 2007. It’s the best.
I already buy gas from Costco!!! It so worth it.
Good luck. Hopefully, the bolts don't break off. I've seen that happen a few times.
what the spec? did you look it up? Because on a pickup it ain't be over 150 and more than likely less unless it has a 2 or 3 in the model #.
Hello Scotty from southeastern Arkansas everybody watches your Chanel down here for advice
hello and thank you!
Yes, it's Chanel No. 5.
I’m watching from North West Arkansas!
No-name gas has made all my cars ping, so the additives would seem to be important.
Jpol.
One video from Scotty a day, it keeps my blues away. ⭐️
Shell and Chevron are my first two choices.
Thank God i listened to Scotty and bought a 94' Celica that gets great gas mileage. I have a great car with no stupid car payment. Wait until gas hits a record high of 5 bucks a gallon this summer and people are unloading SUV's for pennies on the dollar.
Shell has always been the best to me personally..
Costco sells "top tier" gasoline because they actually put certain additives into the fuel. Their premium is always the cheapest anywhere in the area.
Agree. My 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser takes Premium and it runs amazingly, but seems even smoother on the Costco brand. And gets a mpg bump also
I work for Costco I'm happy to here you guys get our gas thanks!
Hell yeah... I put premium in my Acura and Lexus, and Costco always has the cheapest price for premium.
Costco Australia sources all of its fuel from Mobil Australia. It's top quality, and cheaper than all others.
It contains "deposit control additives" although Costco doesn't clarify whether all Mobil fuel does.

There is nothing wrong with using Sunoco, but the whole NASCAR element is all an advertising gimmick.

What you worry about is the condition of the tanks and pumps the gas is in under the station. Go to newer gas stations and avoid crap in your tank.
Tucker Holden, Wanna REALLY tick them off? Switch from Ford to more reliable Toyota and you can laugh at them all the way to the bank.

Chevron is hands down the best and this was actually proven in a study that was done by some mechanics. The mechanics had two cars that were the same cars and each car tried different gas.
