How Long YOU Should Rest Between Sets (NOT SCIENTIFIC - RESULTS BASED!)

  • I'm breaking down exactly how long I rest between sets for each body part. Now everyone is different but I think this will give anyone who is just starting out or having trouble pushing themselves.

    Ryan's rest:
    - Compound = As much as you need
    - Isolated = A minute or less
    - Arms = Almost no rest
    - Chest press = As much as you need
    - Chest fly = 30 seconds max
Tip: Listen to your body, not the stopwatch.

The longer you work out, the better you become at feeling what you need. Some days I'm crazy energy, some days I'm not. Different rest, reps, weight, etc. on different days. Not every work out is the same, nor should be.

SOLID advice on rest periods! Personally, I've taught myself "to go when I'm ready" not when the clock tells me to. If you're training for strength, hypertrophy or both, taking as much time as you need before hitting the next set will help achieve great results. Save the stop watch for cardio.

Then your even to stupid to workout and get a connection with the muscles and what your doing..

For myself I find that the best way to rest is by gauging my breath and heart rate. If I'm still breathing hard I rest longer until I'm ready to do my next set. Pretty simple and works well for me and my clients.
Unless I'm doing rest pause then the rest periods are static of course.

Stop watch is good for timed work outs - but it does not know your body, you do!
Heavy compound lifts and heavy back lifts - Take the time you need, no half-ass sets
    Isolated leg movements - 40 sec - 1 minute.
Arms and calves - No rest whatsoever. Finish set, shake arms, another set.
Shoulders - Mind to muscle before overloading the muscle. Little less than a minute with beginners to feel the connection.
Chest - best of both worlds. Heavy - Same with heavy compound lifts listen to your body. Flyes/detail work? 30-45 seconds max catch your breath, jump back in.
Great video. I'm one of those lifters whose focus is on the stop watch. Definitely gonna try this out today!

Awesome tips man! I like how you emphasize adaptability and an intuitive approach to taking rests. I absolutely agree with you that it's the most effective way to work out.
Also, I don't think taking very minimal rest between sets of arm isolation moves is all that crazy--in fact, I think there's even some evidence to support it. Apparently, for the sake of hypertrophy, it's really only those last couple reps of a set when you're really feeling it that are actually stimulating growth. By taking really short rests you're essentially skipping all the reps it takes to get to that point and jumping right into the hard part of the set. I'm honestly not an evidence based lifter at all, but when the science supports something that we've deduced intuitively I think it's worth pointing out.

Number 1 ,my muscles stop burning from the previous set and number 2 ,I get my breath back and number 3 ,I think I have gained enough strength back in that rest period to give another ball breaking ,gut busting set ! Because I take all my sets to total muscle failure ,even doing negative reps and partial reps in my workouts to try and stimulate the muscles as much as I can to grow ! !

Some of the best workouts I've ever had were when I was 100% in the zone, dropped the dumbbells only long enough to cry out in pain, and then picked them right back up again. As soon as the burn fades, I'm back in it, repping it out.
Other days, I need a few minutes, and the workout is still fantastic because the muscles are recuperated and ready to rock. Either one works, as long as you're putting in the *EFFORT.*

Ryan I completely get where you coming from when you say don’t use a stopwatch and half-ass the set, but the reason I use a stopwatch is to be consistent. Kick my own ass without having an excuse as to why I can’t be ready when I did it the week before and the week before that.
I also really appreciate your personal input in this video (eg no rest for arm and valve work). Anyone can lookup studies on pubmed but let’s be honest: most of the guys conducting that research aren’t super experienced in training themselves and the majority of studies deal with untrained subjects that respond to just about anything. *Experience on the other hand is hard to come by, especially from a guy your caliper.* Ironically it is this anecdotal evidence you are providing here that will spark the ideas of the next studies. *I stumbled across your channel not too long ago and man am I glad I did. Keep up the solid work man. I look forward to your next upload.*

Great content as always. I use a stopwatch to keep me moving and honest. If I need a little more rest I take it.

2 min is my standard rest; ive found that works for me, but I’ll cut it short if I think I’m ready for that next set. I prefer the stopwatch just so I don’t get distracted & it gives me a feel for how long of a time it really is, which is how I got to 2 min in the first place.
I’ll definitely try the arm rest (or lack thereof) thing though.

Your comment section seems pretty level headed. TBH I've been watching your stuff on/off for months without comment. (Usually how the internet works) I wish you nothing but the best for your channel, and please keep up the good work!

Great stuff. i was consistent at 1 min 30 for a good 3 months. liked my growth, but the workouts were just taking too long. i went to 55 seconds with a stop watch and it is great for some stuff bad for others. What your video shows is mix it up in between. Does not have to be all or nothing like this one physique guy said at the gym. I do like stop watch as it keeps me focused as i wont get distracted. i also sometimes take more time if needed and just double the time.
