Superb !! What an enlightened person Dr Sanjiv Sanyal is . Poverty aspiration it is a harsh reality what mr Sanyal has brought out . This podcast needs to be shown to more and more young lot . An eye opener !! We all are stuck in a situation where in we suffer from poverty inspiration !! UPSC is waste of time it is a fact youngster must carefully analyse this it is self explanatory. If you are talented and hardworking don’t join government jobs unless and until you are very very poor and no other opportunities available
Wasting time for 5 - 10 years behind UPSC is madness. However, if we give atleast a year for preparation, then our entire personality transforms positively. Problem is people can't come out of the preparation cycle. It is like addiction. We don't understand when to stop.

200% agreed with Sanjiv Sanyal. He spoke my mind. By Elon Musk or Ambani, he did not mean that everyone must aim to be a businessman. He rather meant to aim for something out of the box, like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam or Dr. CNR Rao or Sachin Tendulkar. Why get trapped into mediocre ambitions like becoming a babu and forwarding files, just because relatives in UP and Bihar value it. AIM FOR BIG.
@@suyashverma9060 That was just a metaphor, as these states are the most crazy ones after civil services. In reality, relatives in all the regions of India go crazy after it. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are no less than UP Bihar.
If it isn't your ambition then it doesn't mean it's mediocre. The question should be asked to him as an economic advisor yo government how many opportunities, the government has created in state of Bihar, so the youth can capitalize on their skills. Has the state given the youth enough opportunities of education and employment? Probably civil services is the best way to show they capabilities. Aspiring for services is not only an aspirational phenomenon of youth but it's a failure of state to optimize their productivity.

I like Dilip Ghosh, and Justice Ganguly is good too. Really don't want Subhendu to lead Bengal bjp. People like him have destroyed WB, just switching sides doesn't change anything. And I have some issues with Bengal bjp too, although I support them and am gonna vote for them. They're focusing too much on the hindu-muslim issue (it is an issue, but not the most important one). I think they should focus more on crumbling education system, business unfriendly attitude, Gunda raj and corruption.

After watching this interview, I can truly appreciate how and why Modi is doing what he is doing. Definitely, there is change in mindset…we are more confident, bold and aspirational and ever before. I wonder if we had this kind of government and mindset since 1947, imagine where we would have been. There is a lot of reading and understanding to be done on how India’s journey has been and how our minds were hijacked and manipulated, else history will repeat itself in an ugly way. Thank you Sajeev sir for enlightening thoughts, I feel you are more member of EAC to the PM
That's the reason and go and research about modi ...modi is very dangerous...who said our economy is good..just read the articles...and read journals.. everything.....if you don't become a bureaucrat our politicians will play with people's life...rich people survive what about poor..if everyone is educated no one supports modi....and Amit shash you don't know the fucking truths...You will see upcoming 5 years... definitely this time modi win but just wait and watch ..... education is imp..modi is playing with that if modi gives education how North Indian villagers still working in south indians state like 200 300 rupees per day...
What a country of clowns we have become. Getting excited due to changed positive perceptions of India (which is just Modi’s PR) while the reality remains grim, and even more filthier. We as a country at this point are no more different than a mediocre individual making pennies but showing off as elite! So what if the perception has changed? Did the reality change at all? NO. Big NO. There’s absolutely nothing enlightening in this verbal overdose from Sanjeev Sanyal who has no qualifications at all to be in any EAC let alone PM’s EAC.

As a bihari, i totally agree with Mr. Sanyal. But you've to understand that there are no industries and favourable industrial policies to inspire youngsters. Central government should definitely intervene.
There are so many problems in India than IAS or IPS preparation. Most of them forgot about those problems after achieving it. I strongly agree with Dr. Sanjiv Sir.

The way the Aspirational Poverty has been getting out and change is manifested now is truly appreciative of. It is excellently explained in the discussion by Mr Sanjeev Sanyal and is worth understanding by all Indian to improve the quality of experience and quality of life. Normally, it has been observed in last about 40 years in WB - Gur Roti distribution is the way people’s aspiration was suppressed to painful level.
I appreciate Mr. Sanyal' concern about the issue. IAS is been considered as the epitome of success since the birth of our nation and even before the independence. But my concern is how many middle class youth will be able to find a better alternative in our socio political and economic scenario. What is the percentage of financial help extended by our financial institutions to commence a business. Do we have a level playing field here. We need authentic data to corroborate the possibility of finding a better alternatives. Merely criticising the aspiring youth isn't the solution to a problem.
Well he's trying to say that aspirants should be pragmatic of their life situation, rather than clinging into a one job, viewing it as only epitome of success they can get in their lifetime is quite a low aspiration from their side.

Sir, You are correct in saying young people waste their energy in preparing for Govt exams. But, please do try to understand that liberalisation policies has not created jobs with dignified monthly income. And, for becoming countries of billioniaries, entrepreneurs we should have a very good basic infrastructure like education, health, housing etc. Without making a consistent long term investment in the above areas we are surely going to struck where we are today.
People who are putting eight hours a day and this much risk, and so much family capital in the exam , don't neee to work in monthly wages, they might be more capable only if they embrace insecurity and invest all this time and money, in something of their own.. most of them will anyway won't get that dignified job anyways

"Monthly income" is a drug given to you every month to keep you in control (subdued) and stop you from aspiring for something big. Why rely on govt for jobs and dignity?
Reasons for downfall of Kolkata : 1. Partition of Bengal in 1947. Partition distanced two third of Bengal from Calcutta immediately lessening the importance of the city. 2. Rise of the Communists: Though B.C. Roy the CM of Bengal did quite a lot for development of the truncated part of Bengal, Communists kept gaining in strength capitalising the pains of partition. And rise of the Communists was associated with declining work culture in the state, leading to a decline in industrial relations. After B.C. Roy, freefall of Bengal took place. So did Kolkata.
Timid herd mentality of easygoing Bengalees, lack of initiative and self respect, excessive and fruitless politics for all and sundry, laziness and 'p overty of aspirations' and such social weaknesses have speeded up the decline considerably.
With Due Respect Sir, Firstly I agree with the few points that you have mentioned. "Poverty of Aspirations "- Very ingenious term Instead of glorifying what modi govt has done, just need to focus on What are leading to Poverty of Aspirations !!! ?. There are many issues that need to be sorted first CORRUPTION TRANSPARENCY ACCOUNTABILITY RESPONSIBLE GOVERNANCE AND MANY MORE Once we sorted our main issues "people don't settle for less." Else it would become a Vicious Cycle. Secondly, WEST's problem I agreed most of the points that some reports were misleading and wrongly manifested. And some organizations/states are not happy with India's growth. But few of them are very genuine. Thirdly, India's Rapid growth Not one political party have had whole credits even PM spoke about it. From Independence to till date, the policies which were implemented had good results as well as bad results. We can say the previous government had created a ground for India's take off, it's a process not just one event. From the Green revolution, LPG reforms and critical political decisions And so on Lastly, UPSC- Fav Topic Yeah it's true "Many chasing a few seats", since the demographic dividend is more. Say approx 100 Seats:1L Candidates, UPSC need to have some reforms especially conducting the exam twice a year. What led to this much craze bro? 1. To Come out of that poverty aspirations- everyone dreamed getting into service. As you mentioned, More Competition than in any other field. 2. Due to State PCS irregularities and Corruption, Not a single state government releases the notifications regularly and nor they conduct in a fair manner. Ironically, In India Paper leaks more efficiently and effectively than ground water into the soil. Everyone starts preparing for UPSC 3. And with the advent of ICT, A few more folks are added. It's good to prepare while doing a job (I Realized Lately) So Before taking anything into our mind please think twice about what is Right or wrong. Let's build together Greater INDIA ❤
If 1/6 th world billionaires should be in India, proportionally, there should not be huge poverty in India proportionally. If he is to create a civilisation, which era is so free, as of today? Present civilisation is much more better than previous one. If a new civilisation is to be built, that should be headed by the oppressed so far .
Bro that's the point this man is talking about, once you want a government who brings transperency, no corruption and other such essentials then only such governments will come in power, only when you start wanting a government who believes in developing infrastructure then only that will happen, only when you start wanting a society valueing entrepreneurs you will generate employment ( I hate the idea of it being directly government's job to produce employment). About the previous government's job of laying groundwork I would like to say, they were really efficient only when it was a life or death situation. Green revolution arrived because India was at the brink of mass starvation ( only 2 weeks reserves were left). 1991 economics reforms were introduced because India was at the brink of bankrupsy ( around a weeks reserves left) So saying they did put in the groundwork is an overstatement, they only did what they did so that they can continue filling their pockets. I don't want to come accross as this government is completely exceptional. You will find a lot of properties bought by relatives of current executives in the government which is simply impossible without curroption, but they did invest in infrastructure and made doing business fairly easier than before ( still miles left)
@soultune908 No current govt has worked quite well , ask pvt sector people like me who work sincerely not govt babu (incompetent and corrupt) Northie craps like you .
Persisting weaknesses of hesitant Calcutta and easygoing Bengalees, as analysed by Dr Sanjeev Sanyal in this precious video presentation, have been identified so precisely. Accordingly, it's now easier to eke out the ameliorative steps required for regeneration of all round development once again, provided the Bengalees are really serious about their future. The observations made by Dr Sanyal would serve as a road map of sorts for necessary course corrections.
Re Ocean going Boat. A request Mr. Sanyal: Please make a website that will closely track the activities of the project - the milestones covered, the mile stones to go, designs made and changed, the unseen challenges, incomplete understandings, known unknowns, unknown unknowns, ... Kuch bhi logic laga de. India's population is almost four times that of the US so, what is this import/export argument? India had four unicorns in 2014 and now it's over 100. Tu bhi bana le ek startup/unicorn and ban ja millionaire or billionaire. I hope you will create something like "Jio" that revolutionizes the digital landscape of India. And if you know that Adani and Ambani get a contract delivered from government offices then go to court and get it cancelled. P.S. Here's an interesting question i think many would love to indulge in: Q. What if the the Indian Rupee (₹) (hypothetically) appreciate (rises) into the single digits, against the USD($). I have personally tried alot to find the answer to this, but there is interestingly very little research into this, that I could find. Some are hypothesising this as a prospective future for india, and Sanjeev ji has talked about it being harmful for our exports on twitter, in response to those. But what you could do, is explore it more. This is huge thing either way, good or bad, or both and nuanced. I say this, because, while the exports will shift to more luxury stuff, our imports (which includes oil) would become cheap by a factor of 5-10 which HUGE, therefore possibly making things mad cheap, and thereby (possibly) boosting the purchasing power of any holder to by several times. This could be an interesting question i think, and being a economicst and historian, i think he could give alot of interesting views on this.
the exchange rate is a symptom of balance in economies of the world, not the other way around i.e. economies will balance out because of the exchange rate. if Indian rupee strengthens because the world becomes weak it will not be beneficial for India. If Indian rupee strengthens because the Indian economy performs well then obviously it will benefit India. An unrestricted system will always move towards equilibrium, when overall world becomes volatile then India will be affected negatively too, and vice versa. Another possibility is moving towards protectionism(a restricted world), it will be a net opportunity loss. Counties who are free and have better access to means will be better off.
Exchange rates have no real meaning except converting between systems of measurement. Same as converting kilometer to miles, rupee and dollars are just ways to measure the economies of each country. 1 INR is 1.83 YEN still Japan is a larger economy due to their higher output. Amul butter in india is 400 rupee for half kilo Similar quantity of butter at Wholefoods or walmart is 5-7 dollar which is slightly higher but only because supply chains are more expensive in the US. This has nothing to do with dollar exchange rates. Also China intentionally undervalues the Yuan to keep the manufacturing contract negotiations stable and also keep manufacturing cheap and competitive. If inflation in India is identical to USA and the economic growth is higher, INR will automatically start to grow higher. (Given no external factors) All these are just examples to justify that exchange rate has no real meaning except measurement of economies and their systems.
It's not that deep of a question.....the one clarification i would ask from you....since u asked the question....is at which time frame are u talking about....is it at a time....when India has surpassed the US in real per capita GDP and hence real GDP....or at the present state of economy the answer will depend on this...
If India produces luxury stuff , that is very less elastic and whole world wants it , then rupee will appreciate. And this won't even hurt us, because we will be able to consume more items without losing on our exports. Whereas if we artificially appreciate rupee (in current scenario), then our trade deficit will increase sharply which will deplete our forex reserves and to artificially appreciate rupee we have to decrease supply of rupee in the market, which will lead to deflation and thus lower economic growth.
Indias exports are rather low or low grade. Plus we have to import 80% of our energy. Additionally, we have terribly low capital investment in precision manufacturing.
Sir, I really appreciate your view on UPSC.❤ But i can agree with your perspective on Mrinal Sen's work. Actually if you really want to find out the reason of West Bengal's downfall, it was started since 1946, there was no state in India who had to allow to much refugees. The central government of that time didnt provide necessary support and Mrinal Sen's movie reflects that hardcore reality . Try to think those situations over political views...

Bro, India is not only UP and Bihar so just don't Gaslight them just inorder to put them blame of all problems of India 🤬

I wonder if we had this kind of government and mindset since 1947, imagine where we would have been. There is a lot of reading and understanding to be done on how India’s journey has been and how our minds were hijacked and manipulated, else history will repeat itself in an ugly way.

NO. Living in a highly capitalist city in India, I felt so much peace and comfort in Kolkata in my recent visit.
Two Noble prize winners from Bengal in Britain & USA have got it for highlighting poverty.
Adda intellectual. So right. Late marriages, poor family relationships so common because of economic issues
Late marriages are choices. If you're conservative, whether you are rich or poor, you'll get married early, otherwise it's a choice.

After 1991 economic reforms, in the second term of Bill Clinton when views on India turned positive, Miss India suddenly started winning International beauty contests one after the other. Not saying that Miss India who won Miss World/Universe were talented enough to deserve it. They were. But talent wasn't enough for Miss India to have won both Miss World and Miss Universe title twice.

It is a hypocrisy that students are willing to take a RISK in preparing for upsc for multiple years, but cant take the same RISK in anything else. This is nothing but brainwashing, propagated by coaching mafias for their own business.
Thats the whole problem , we want the government to set up everything ,it can never happen in country of 1 .4 billion when even a super power with 3 times more land and 5 times more wealth still has homeless in their country.Stop this nonsense of government should arrange , it will only arrange for really down trodden ,if you have access to internet cheap and roof over your house , yoou are good enough to sustain yourself. Frankly its no ones reposisbiity to create jobs , one has to create their own
2-3 part time jobs a week will get you same salary as a monthly salary'.. use that saving to invest in sharemarket, mutal funds, SIP....then save money, make money and start a business
"Monthly income" is a drug given to you every month to keep you in control (subdued) and stop you from aspiring for something big. Why rely on govt for jobs and dignity?
Reasons for downfall of Kolkata :

With Due Respect Sir,
Firstly I agree with the few points that you have mentioned.
"Poverty of Aspirations "- Very ingenious term
Instead of glorifying what modi govt has done, just need to focus on
What are leading to Poverty of Aspirations !!! ?.
There are many issues that need to be sorted first
CORRUPTION
TRANSPARENCY
ACCOUNTABILITY
RESPONSIBLE GOVERNANCE
AND MANY MORE
Once we sorted our main issues "people don't settle for less." Else it would become a Vicious Cycle.
Secondly, WEST's problem
I agreed most of the points that some reports were misleading and wrongly manifested. And some organizations/states are not happy with India's growth.
But few of them are very genuine.
Thirdly, India's Rapid growth
Not one political party have had whole credits even PM spoke about it.
From Independence to till date, the policies which were implemented had good results as well as bad results.
We can say the previous government had created a ground for India's take off, it's a process not just one event.
From the Green revolution, LPG reforms and critical political decisions And so on
Lastly, UPSC- Fav Topic
Yeah it's true "Many chasing a few seats", since the demographic dividend is more.
Everyone starts preparing for UPSC
3. And with the advent of ICT, A few more folks are added.
It's good to prepare while doing a job (I Realized Lately)
So Before taking anything into our mind please think twice about what is Right or wrong.
@@issackokkiligadda9921 you speak of marxist idelogy
Persisting weaknesses of hesitant Calcutta and easygoing Bengalees, as analysed by Dr Sanjeev Sanyal in this precious video presentation, have been identified so precisely. Accordingly, it's now easier to eke out the ameliorative steps required for regeneration of all round development once again, provided the Bengalees are really serious about their future. The observations made by Dr Sanyal would serve as a road map of sorts for necessary course corrections.

One sees the different skill training programs are also making a Huge Difference across rural India where roads are developing. One such program is the Drone Didi skill programme. In my work across sectors I see a noticeable change in women's attitudes and youth attitudes which are changing households' attitudes and not in a bad way but a very great evolutionary way.🙏🏻
Having the correct mindset along with vision is quite essential. :)
I am relieved that this man is in charge of the nation’s economic policies. Better late than never.
For having 1/6th billionaire we should also have 1/6th of global GDP not just 1/6th population. Literally in PPP terms Ambani and Adani are richer then Bezos and musk without building any globally known/exported brand or products unlike bezos and musk. Most of their business are where government intervention or contracts are needed which clearly shows the crony nature of their wealth.
Excellent ! I fully agree 💯 .
P.S. India needs more Adani and Ambani because they not only creating infrastructures in India but now pushing out of India too in a way expanding India's sphere of influence.
@@51lkyw4y tu kabhi millionaire ban jaayega kya?
@@ChadErenYeager9392 Pappu ke 14, didn't you read the whole message? I'm not opposed to anyone becoming millionaire and billionaire.
US has four percent of the total global population so, by his logic the US share should be four percent of the total global economy, 4 percent of the total millionaires, billionaires, etc., What kind of argument is that?
As exporting Indian technologies goes to the world, it's not going to be easy. It can seen in the case of China (the likes of TikTok, Huawei, etc.) but eventually, it will happen in a few decades. Is it going to be easy? No, it will not.
He talks about government intervention and contracts. Do you want entities like Air India(in government control) again? The government used to spend 20-25cr. daily to keep the airline afloat.
I'm scratching my head to make sense of these arguments but after my reply, I saw that this person watches Ravish Kumar and after that, all of his arguments started to make sense.
Fyi ... PPP terms don't work on billionaires. What are they gonna buy 10 million burgers and 2 million Banana smoothies 😅
We need more of his interviews in most of the podcasts to enlighten us. More and more viewers need to listen to him to understand what India is heading towards!! We need more economists like him not only IITans and IIM grads.... We need such leader in Bengal to change the fate of Bengal, not sure when we shall wake up and dare to change Bengal... Being a Bengali it's a shame that where we were during 70s and where we are now... Its absolutely true that, if I am happy staying in a small flat, I shall never aspire to become a millionaire...
Finally somebody from the government itself spoke the TRUTH about upsc. These coachings have brainwashed an entire generation by glamorizing such people. Karma hitting back.
Dr Sanjiv Sanyal is great person and intellectual. He has deep knowledge on Indian culture and heritage. He defined the need of hours very gently. Nowadays, students are much obsessed for UPSC and wasting their precious time and age towards only one goal. They might think for other choices and work towards nation building. Who stopped us to dream higher. Great podcast and thank you Team "NEON"💐
Shukriyah, Singh Sahab. We will continue to provide more content like this in the future. Keep spreading awareness. :)
The reason people want govt. jobs due to no need for performance, benefits, competition, expectations of quality job performance, corruption, and future portions based on seniority.
Kaafi Sach!! :)
The truth is bluntly spoken
Thanks, Amit. Do check out our previous hour-long podcast featuring Sanjeev Sanyal. :)
Oh man this guy is a genius, loved the whole conversation!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Don't forget to check out his earlier podcast on The Neon Show as well. 💚
Poverty of ambition, aspiring to be a goonda or a local committee leader, Kerala ticks every single one of these boxes. I don't know how to save myself and family from the impending doom.
I have the same problem here in West Bengal. People here are cynically calling it as Waste Bengal

Perfectly said Mr Sanyal. Perfectly said. As I learnt from my father : 'No company can be better than the man at the top of it." That sums up all. We are now going through the rule of thugs. The result of rigging in art form.
For last 50-60 yrs Bengal is having a govt which is in tenterhooks with the central government. The list is long and gradually the city died. Today people are still voting for people who gives doles, no aspiration and no future planning at all. God knows in next 30 years either the state will be finished or will have a resurrection.
People voted for TMC for change , development but in contrast they just managed people to be in power.
He is right now football, art, literature cannot survive without money. Unfortunately the last nail in coffin was the Singur Nandigram episode.
PS. I want Victoria Memorial to be re named as Azad Hind Merorial and it should have museum dedicated to Azad Hind Fauz!!

It means we are glorifying reservation system too as Sanjeev sir said " we are glorifying poverty!!
Hope to see you as a Financial Minister in future, just like Dr Jaishankar in Foreign Ministry.
From the vantage point of many in UP and Bihar the government salaries after UPSC are great and these exams don’t need high levels of English communication skills which may be needed in software jobs etc. So it is a good opportunity for them. But only very few will get selected as seats are really less
13:29 what indian youth is idolising now is tiktokers/influencers. Not that we don't need them today - but we should aspire to become better professions - industrialists, scientists.
The more I hear Sanjeev ,.more I am awed by his logic and narrative structure.
As a past PSU head of ER at Kolkata, here is my secret for you:
All other conditions remaining constant, a Bong fares professionally much worse when posted in Kolkata than outside of it. I have checked it across domains, age group and hierarchies.
Listening to this on loop, and sharing with friends n family sir sanjiv is such a next level intellect.. clarity of thought n love for country very much evident..huge blessing that he came back to uplift bharat.. I always get swades feeling listening to him..yeh jo des hai tera..
Great respect for him. Being in the government and saying that the govt shouldn't have that much control in private life is really remarkable.
I feel sad for bengal 😢. I know how intelligent they are and their potential.
They are not intellegent, they are pseudo intellegent,
We are still infatuated with commie mindset even though we know it doesn't work. And people of elite intelectual class are most commie of them all. so I don't know what intelligent about that

Cracking upsc might have 0.001 probability but becoming Elon musk or Neeraj Chopra has far less probability. Nothing is easy but yes we should invest our time and efforts into something only to a point where returns look prospective
Life isn't always clear-cut; there's usually a middle ground to think about. :)

UPSC has become the scapegoat for lack of infrastructure to explore other opportunities and poor corporate ethics.
Why upsc craze in bihar? Iska sabse main reason pe koi nhi focus krte . Sab bol jate hai ambani , adani , elon musk ko dekho. Sports opportunity, entrepreneur opportunity nhi hai bihar me .

Like WB, Bihar also have corrupt politicians.
People"s aspirations reflects upon their leaders. Bihari themselves have given up on Bihar, than what they expect Chinese will make Bihar great again? It's the people of Bihar who should have realized this long before and deliberated their action towards progressing Bihar.
A big fan of both Sanjeev Sanyal dir snd this channel ❤
Thank you! I wish you all the best for the upcoming cricket season. :)
Oh God... Mind blowing. Can't imagine this devil design of West. Great sir, need more of you.
Here's an interesting question i think many would love to indulge in:
Amul butter in india is 400 rupee for half kilo
Similar quantity of butter at Wholefoods or walmart is 5-7 dollar which is slightly higher but only because supply chains are more expensive in the US.
(Given no external factors)
All these are just examples to justify that exchange rate has no real meaning except measurement of economies and their systems.
Brutally Correct...
