I like the way you made this video. Succinct, easy to follow and laid out well enough for anyone to understand, unlike the endless ramblings that are so common in what seems like 99.999% of YT videos out here. Thank you for being a professional through and through.
We see your point, Rasheen. Yet an expired green card does not necessarily mean your permanent residence status also expired. That's what makes this rather insane.
I'm doing my research about US tax laws prior to the possibility of accepting a green card. What are the obligations of a 'US person' who holds superannuation accounts in Australia? Reading a few other websites about the topic and it sounds complicated.
This is why I have no taste to remain in America - a citizen or green card holder is a financial asset to the government FIRST, and then a human second. It's all about the money 🤬
Do you have to pay taxes as a green card holder but not living (and not having moved yet to the US) in the US, and already paying income taxes in the residence country?
Great question. If you received your GC outside the US, your first day of residency is first day you were physically present in the US after your received the GC. So, if you got the GC in July, but did not come to the US at all by December, you would not be a resident and not be a US person for tax purposes. But importantly, there does not appear to be an intent element to this. So let's say you got a GC in July and visited the US in September to look at apts with your wife and then left the US a week later, not returning until the following year in January. It does not appear to matter that you only planned to stay in the US for a few days apt hunting with the intent to return abroad for the remainder of the year. You were physically present in the US in September after you got the GC, so your residency date starts from there. And, your date of residency may begin January 1st even if you got the GC after and moved the US after too.
if i arrived in the us on green card in dec 2020 - do i need to file a tax form if only spent one day in the usa for that year - no income in us - but worked aboard during that year

Hi I had a question. I have been following you for a while. I wanted to ask a question about Green Card Holder? Can you Apply for foreign tax credit as a green card holder. Will this be a red flag when you are applying to get your citizenship??
Just for reference, a green card does NOT open the -entire- US job market to you. Certain job categories are limited to US citizens. And an expired green card does not affect your immigration status full stop. Although companies might want to see a non expired green card to give you a job even though they have the means to check your work eligibility through E-verify.
Thanks for the great video. I have so many questions now regarding my situation. I am a US citizen, my wife is not. She will get her green card soon and then we will move to the states. She works online for a non-US company and gets paid in her non-US account. Will she be able to use form 2555 while living in the states but being paid abroad? She has previous investments, bank savings, and two properties as well. Will she be held liable for any previous incomes, profits, properties, etc?

Thank you so much. I am not quite sure if using the SFOP would have any impact on applying for citizenship. Our first thought is that being outside that country already happened. So you might as well take advantage of no penalty of SFOP if you can. If your question is "let's suppose I *could* live outside the US for one year in order to qualify for SFOP, would that impact my application of US citizenship?" That would probably be an answer best for an immigration attorney. Also, by intentionally delaying any FBAR filing you are aware of, that sort of makes you willful which disqualifies one from either the Foreign or Domestic Streamline procedures.
I have 2 questions. After how many days of becoming permanent resident one has to file the tax. In the same year or next year? What is the worldwide taxable income or investment or bank balance above which one has to file us tax? What if we are filing tax in our home country?
I am seeking that same answer. My Husband wants to move here in the middle of December, what does that mean for him. Did you ever get an answer to your question?

Paying taxes to US IRS from income you had abroad and paid taxes abroad already? No thank you!
You are opposed to spending thousands to file a return that proves you owe no taxes? The tax industry is going to have a talk with you.
do you happen to know how often someone who files 8854 is "selected" for review/audit? thanks
What happens to the U.S. citizens if the corporation falls?
Is there any initiative to remove these ridiculous limitations? US immigration laws and taxes are the worst yet nobody really know about it.

File your taxes and obey the law and you'll be fine...otherwise go home or be deported.

What countries do allow the IRS to have jurisdiction?
Man is this a loaded question. Why would ANY country consider what happens inside their borders to the business of the IRS?
