- It’s 50 degrees celsius, extremely hot weather for a sailor in full combat gear on the bridge of HMCS Iroquois. The Iroquois is a tribal class destroyer with state of the art tracking systems and the weaponry required to be the flagship for CTF 150. Today, the crew are in flat jackets and helmets as it navigates the warship from the narrow Bab el Mandeb Strait. The geographical chokepoint has the dubious distinction of being one of the most dangerous waterways on the planet. Translated from Arabic, Bab el Mandeb means the Gate of Tears
A powerful naval task group has sailed east from ports in Canada to one of the most lawless maritime regions in the world: the Persian Gulf. As a part of a six-part HD documentary series, we follow the daily events and real-life stories of the brave men and women living and working to keep these warships running at a 100%.

Needs louder music, I almost heard some of the narration at one point.
It's not a tough military documentary without heavy electric guitar and drums.😂
@@Voodoorai do you know what music was used, I haven’t been able to find it
lol
@@damyouggw I'm pretty certain these shows just have a generic electronic beat composer machine and someone gets gacked-up on too many espressos and starts hammering away, trying to match their heartbeat. That way they don't have to pay for music. 🤣
@@Voodoorai I’ve herd it before in the show, situation critical
HMCS Iroquois was also my fist ship. In which they volunteered me for Boarding Party, I was on these teams for 18 yrs.
The Iroquois predecessor's, the steamers, had two 75 ton AC units so 50 degrees Celsius would still have you snuggle up to your blanket, I sailed on HMCS Restigouche and when we tied up in Manilla in the height of Summer below decks was always just sublime, open a door to the outside and you get hit with a brick of heat, crew comfort is a must on any Warship temperature wise.
I always laugh at the Canadian Governments declaration of state of the art technology. We are 20 years behind. Thank you Justin.
I love this channel and I really enjoy this doc about a ship you'd never see on DISC, TLC, THC in their golden years.
I love the "HI MOM & DAD !" sign at 19:20
That ship was scrapped back in 2016. In this video, she looks quite good for a very old lady.
This was filmed before 2015, as of 2015 only HMCS Calgary out of all those ships is still in service, sea king are replaced by the cyclone
2009 I was part of the crew on this trip.
Just another youtube channel stealing content.
Along with 12 other frigates
Lol........this comment didn't age well 😮
Justadude are you saying that all the Halifax Class are out of service except HMCS Calgary.
Thank Christ I was never a part of this Canadian Navy. I am Canadian 🇨🇦
Superb series. These people are on the front line and very dangerous environment. Best of luck to the well equipped highly skilled guys and girls.
You know it's canadian when imperial and metric are mixed together :)
British too.
I wish we used Metric. It just makes so much more sense. I’m a chef in the US and we use grams, kilos, mills, it’s just easier. However our friends across the pond use Imperial, Metric, and weigh themselves in stone lol

CO’s small shades (sunglasses), got me😅😂
The covers are wrong for the Middle East, especially on the sea. The best head gear for that part of the world would be the kaffiyah, which drapes cotton down to the shoulders and goes around the back for shade. It can also cover the face for relected sun protection. Hats with headbands built-in, like these boonies or ball caps, keep heat in the head.
I just applied for the navy reserve, very informative video!
Cool video, although I found the lack of beards red flannel and maple syrup surprising 😮
I like the hats and the ice cream. Two good reasons to join a war ship.
My husband was in the Canadian Armed Forces as a MCPL COOK aboard HMCS TERRA NOVA AND HMCS QUAPELLE Restigouche classes in 1980's and has seen the HMCS HURON AND ALGONQUIN being build from his house backyard when he was a teenager in the 1970's at the Sorel shipbuilding industry. Now the other frigates went on extended refits so rhe old Restigouche classes are done and the Canadian government is still trying to figure out how and when they are going to start the new ships and they are fiddling around,Gerry my husband said he will be dead before the new ship's will be going to see
そうですね、大改装により、現代艦として使えてますが、そろそろ、船体自体が寿命ですよね。
Are their hats Tilleys? Made in Canada.
i enjoyed this video keep up the good work
I hope the Canadian Navy added veggies to there meals. 🙂
I hear there pay is good like 100 year
Maple syrup and it byproducts are plant basedm

What’s the status of the casualty?
Ah, the casualty is alive.😂
I was there on HMCS TerraNova during the response to Iraq"s invasion of Kuwait. It was challenging.

5 min? Oscar is dead!
Clearly the military needs new recruits.
I like there cowboy hats lol 😂😂😂😄
Believe it or not, the cowboy hats are actually part of the CAF Dress Code.
Almost all the officers have a big belly of some sorts.

So many pudgy guys with 70's mustaches! Maybe the heavy metal soundtrack is appropriate.
I like the hat's the Canadian sailors are wearing. US Army doesn't believe in necks/ears getting sunburn, so they give us caps. (Technically I was issued a better hat, but CMDR said we all had to wear the caps.)
POG
@@clambelly3 no, the POGs got to wear the fancy hats. My PSG was strict/traditional, didn't like any of that "newfangled gear". (19D if you were curious.)

How come some of the other navy ship videos it says your page has set it that canada can't watch these videos ????

When was this filmed? If 2020, then the pilots are still in the rank of Captain up to this year ever since their promotion on 2000 and 2004? That's a very slow promotion.

Man I don’t know the Canadian navy is nothing like Brit’s or us navy
Wonder what strength of sunscreen Canadians have to wear when in the middle east. I'd imagine if you heat up a Canadian too much they spontaneously combust. 😂
The man overboard rescue drill was a shit show. "Best one I've seen so far."... Wow.
Those sailors were so busy jockeying for camera time they lost focus. A lot of yelling over others. Ranks need defining and polishing. Multiple individuals yelling commands at the same individual is how casualties happen.
ok, so a canadian air force chopper is in a canadian naval ship? why doesn’t the canadian navy have its own naval aviation like other navies?
Lol what do u except bud
A helicopter is an aircraft so the air force who specialize in maintaining and flying aircraft would be the logical choice for that role. Why even have an air force if the army, navy, marines have their own?. The US military is a good example of a million tools that can only do one thing each vs the one tool that can do everything those million tools can do. my dad was giving rations to American tank men stranded on the side of the road for 3 days in Afghanistan. They had a broken track and had to wait for mechanic to come and fix it, meanwhile them explaining that my dad fixed the track and sent them on their way why doesn't the US army teach its tank operators how to do simple repairs? the Taliban were probably waiting to kill the tank crew, the repair crew, and their infantry escort. so in answering why doesn't the Royal Canadian Navy have its own aviation detachment is like asking why the air force doesn't have its own ships, its simple its not their job to worry about ships the air force focus on aircraft the navy focuses on ships and subs the army focuses on soldiers and vehicles.
@@MrAwesomal My Grandmother could land a plane on a 10,000-foot runway. You will never see an AF pilot hanging on his port wing right before lining up with the ship. Your logic is not sound as the AF and the Navy have two entirely different missions that are not compatible.
@@BUCKMAW the royal canadian navy has done it for the past 70 years the pilots on ships all detachment of the air force they are trained for ship born operations again lets leave flying aircraft to the branch where their only purpose is to operate aircraft on land or at sea my question of why have an air force is all branches have their own so bybthat logic a marine helicopter in the same theater cant support army operations because its "two entirely different missions" when the mission is operate aircraft to achieve objectives i dont see where air navy and army are so different in mission scope people are smart enough to learn different things most royal canadian airforce pilots are trained on multuple aircraft the thought process is if it flies its airforce thats like a mechanic saying he cant fix a ford because he only works on GM its called being interchangeable
@@BUCKMAW Yes they fly, the navy sails, and they work together, and have since 1968.
Having a bad comedian yell over the 1MC wouldn't help my morale...
I feel bad for the Canadians. They're operating obsolete 30+ year old frigates, with serious personnel and funding issues. These destroyers haven't been in service for 10+ yrs.
Luckily the Type 26 frigates are in the works.
I feel sorry for Canadians because of Trudeau.
