The guy behind the metroidvania versions of Castlevania left Konami to start his own company and made Bloodstained in the absence of Konami not doing anything with the Castlevania IP
I think it works as a successor because Konami has left it be for the most part. The fingerprint of Iga is what makes them similar along with Yamane and (though not really involved) Kojima. If Konami does anything in the future that rings hollow of CV, Bloodstained will at least be there still to be proof against what it should/could be.
Personally I think Harmony Of Dissonance OST sells feeling of "being lost in nightmarish castle beyond human comprehension" the best of all games (part 3 will give it more spotlight I guess). Also the HoD vampire killer theme goes the hardest
