  • I felt the need to push this one out given the general doom and gloom I've seen surrounding FGO's latest announcement on JP. In this video I talk about where FGO stands and how it got in this situation. As well why its ok to be upset but still be optimistic for the future of the game.

One other thing mentioned by chat right after I stopped recording was also the potential FGO still has. They mentioned the recent jump from rank 145 (which we never should have been at) to rank 1 on the JP iOS store with Nito's release. Regardless I really wanted to get this video out to give you guys some food for thought in light of the recent doomposting. Thanks for watching as always! Don't forget to like the video and consider subscribing if you'd like more!

I mean, my perspective is as follows: They had a year to have LB7 done, and it's pretty clear that they barely scraped a pt1 together by Dec 25th: no banners, unfinished enemy animations, KP costume confirmed - but for pt2, etc. They said the banner issue was to avoid spoilers, fine, I can accept that excuse despite Dec winding up pretty light on new units as a result (a term which here means, no new units in Dec.) Giving more goodwill, enemy servant animations could also be obfuscating for the playable versions.
New years happens. Kirei's pretty cool, his first sprite's missing his crucifix necklace, but nbd. Nothing happens the rest of January in terms of new or rerun content to play. A little concerning, but it doesn't become actively problematic until the announcement for LB7-2 release when it becomes pretty clear that there's nothing but daily content to engage with all of Jan.
Nito Alter releases out of nowhere in the middle of the month, a unit who's clearly a story unit form 7-2 who hasn't yet appeared. I like Nito, but there's no way I'm rolling on a regular pool single SSR banner presumably like 6 days before a main story chapter with an accompanying banner comes out, so despite Nito being pretty neat, she may as well not be in the game for anyone looking to be thrifty with their quartz. Also, they clearly backtracked upon their unit spoiler statement, but nbd, the Lostbelt's gonna drop in a week because there's no other date left in the month that fits when they regularly release new content.
They make an announcement that 7-2 is going to drop at 8PM on Jan 31st JP time. What this tells me is that they're pretty close to having it ready, but they, as of right now, are not done, they are in crunch time and really don't expect it to be ready any earlier than the 30th. Nito's release was just so that they can have something ready mid-jan so the entire month wasn't just devoid of anything, so they released a single, relatively non-spoily unit who's an alter form of a unit we've had forever they they were honestly intending on releasing for the LB banners.
Essentially it seems they've had all hands on deck working on the Lostbelt all month so they literally don't have the staff to spare on setting up any time-filler campaign, even something as relatively simple as hunting quests just so that they can save face and meet their January deadline without having to appoligize to the community. This is inexcusable because realistically, both parts should have been done in December, they could timegate the LB and have the New Years campaign to essentially buy themselves a month of devtime to work on future content.
Instead it's clear that they're starting the year incredibly behind and will need to play catch-up going into February, which means less content for us the players and more crunchtime for the dev team themselves. The whole situation reeks of serious mismanagement and bad PR. Like, if they made a statement on the 10th saying they ran into development issues and would have 7-2 ready early February, threw us some apoligems and ran like hunting quests for a week, deadweek, then a bare-bones grail front v kadoc with rewards being blue prisms/teapots, the community may have been a little peeved but this whole thing would have gone over a lot better. Heck, if they knew they were in crunch, they could have just said that they were releasing 7-2 on the 31st from the onset.

Can anyone explain why people are obsessed with the coin system? I get append, specifically on the 20% guage/Atk up as that can make or break certain farming strats (rarely tho tbh). But for the levels, is there really that big of a diff between 118 (F2P attainable) and 120? If you have been playing the game for a few years then you most likely already have all your class slots/niches filled considerably well (even for F2P). I get the satisfaction of making your servants stronger, but for the most part its unnecessary as you can beat all the games content with lvl 100 servants.. Its like.. yall do realize they are selling you something you dont really need right? And ik most of these gameplay complaints are coming from end game veterans with fully built rosters, while beginners can literally clear story easily by using any whale servant of their choice, until they get to end game.

Backing up your one-time code is not REALLY a good safety net, with an account at least you could reissue or reset your code and password.

the only thing I can think of is that since the re-runs make less money, the investors or someone decided they should take them down and concentrate on new events instead, and obviously with the new wave of COVID's tearing up their schedule, devs are now facing a number of problems instead.

There were lots of games and stuff delayed due to the covid, they had to choose between 1, 2 or more months of death gameplay and try to get back to the schedule, or start releasing things out of order.
There were several cases of people catching the covid in anime industry because they were forced to work while on pandemics, so you can't hardly blame them for not thinking ahead of the current situation.
Now, re releasing old banners imply the re run of older events, and people would still complain about it. Most JP players are looking forwarding new content, not balanced our proper gameplay. Japanese FGO streams are mostly about gacha pulls, not gameplay.

If dw could manage it with a budget then lasangle sure as hell could also. I also don't think that they have increased their earnings a lot since then. I'd argue that lb4 to lb5.5 were consistently peak times of fgo overall. Lb6 did create that hype as well for the time being but ever since it's been a downward spiral. They even scratched animation updates. Which was one of the most looked forward activities in the game. And was also a great way for old rerun banners to sell well. Release jalter update today and see the community going crazy. I don't know why they thought this was a bad strategy. If work management was the Reason then it's just stupid. Not to mention a lot of new SSR also have lower quality sprites and nps compared to before. Excluding only Anni units.

To be honest it is what it is, nasu has implied a lack of staff for ages now, l remember reading his interview back when lansengle first joined, for a company with an IP this profitable, they shouldn't struggle with finding employees. If they are struggling, it simply means that they are giving awful terms/$ that chase away labour. Thats the only sensible explanation as to why they are still looking for labour. months in
That part where they are now hiring students also likely gives a hint, people at the start of there careers will put up with a lot of shit, skilled/exp labour wont. FGO needs professional devs tbh, not fucking interns!

A lot of this folds back into the one issue you brought up in your "list of things they need to improve": communication. Silence often looks guilty by nature gives plenty of room for the imagination to run wild. Even my current concerns regarding issues I gave with the game could be greatly mitigated if they actually opened their mouths and gave us some idea of what their actual plan is moving forward. One could speculate as to the reasons they haven't been more forthcoming, but therein lies the problem: silence invites speculation, and speculation rarely invites charity, especially when times are looking rough.

  • @Rhino64u

Anyone saying the game is going to die anytime soon is clearly wrong, but lets be real, FGO has serious problems that have been persistent for years at this point, and have yet to be addressed. The content drought has been absurd since lostbelt 5, where they start splitting the lostbelts into .1s and .2s or time gate it over three god damn months like lostbelt 6! We went from multiple singularities, all of the psudo-singularities, and the first 3 lostbelts being released per year, down to being lucky if it's one bit of main story per year, it's inexcusable. Also, no, the .5s don't cut it. There is nothing that gets said or revealed in them that couldn't have been done in an actual main story lostbelt. They are basically nothing more than main interlude events that span a good 3-4 weeks despite having at most 2 weeks worth of content.
Animation and unit model updates are practically non-existent anymore, with some of the older units in desperate need of them (looking at you Jeanne Alter). Even them, most of the once that have been done in "recent" times have been majorly phoned in, with minimal actual animation being done to the models in favor of weird jump cuts from one stance or attack to the next, which is very jarring and noticeable if you actually bother to put the game on normal speed even once to take a look; how Tesla turned out ok is frankly a miracle given the track record over the past couple years. Alongside the lack of animations is a lack of main interlude releases that new and old players alike could legitimately benefit from, either in the form of mats and prisms (for old players) to the old welfare servants and CEs for new players (Rider Kintoki and Golden Sumo are never getting re-released, let's be real at this point).
Events are dragged out to their absolute maximum duration, lasting a solid 2-3 when they have at most 2 weeks of content, and that's being generous. Despite that, we still end up with actual empty, dead weeks, where there is legit nothing to do. Farming free quests, are people serious?! That's just not relevant content AT ALL; the drop rates on mats have always been shit and the nodes so mind-numbingly dull anyone unironically considering this as relevant content needs serious help! Even the best of the dailies are barely worth running, and at a cost of 40 AP you have maybe 5 minutes of something to do, less if you farm as a slave to the meta and min turn everything. That isn't content, that's a chore.
The game's UI is horrendous, and is constantly requiring the player to flip between menu after menu for the most minor of things. Friend list refresh being on a timed delay for seemingly no reason at all. Friends on your list not showing up consistently if they haven't logged on in the last 5 minutes. Not being able to automatically use that same friend support when you select to repeat a quest node you're farming, only for them to disappear from your listed options when the game sends you back to that screen. Hell, we're not even allowed to NOT take a friend/story support in 99% of cases, for some reason? Why we're building up all these servants then, I have no idea, but sure, lets force people to not use their own characters, because that's a great design decision!/s So many baffling UI and system design decisions that have been around since the game's launch are still prevalent, and are unlikely to ever be fixed seeing as they haven't been fixed in 7 years.
Servant upgrade systems that are just annoying to deal with. To the game's credit, command codes have been improved, so there's that. The coin system still sucks though, especially for the limited and story locked 3* and 4* servants, and hell 4* servants in general, given there is no 4* pity system. But the fou paws... why is that even a system as it stands?! For how little of an increment each paw does, their rate of acquisition is incredibly asinine. How that system has remained untouched for years is astounding, because it is in serious need of an overhaul.
Missing features that are standard in most (if not all) other gacha games. No alternative game modes like a monthly challenge tower. A permanent Setsubun-event style tower, or hell, even a grail front game mode, imperfect as it is, could deal with this issue, but to this day shit has yet to be added. No access to old events outside of specific re-runs (which is what the Main Interlude system should have fixed by now). The game doesn't even have story replay 7 years into it's life! This is a story based game; everyone does everything in this game for the sake of the main and side stories, and the game lacks story replay, of all things! Considering that, forget ever having some kind of new game+ mode for the older stories either. And to all the people who say it wouldn't make sense because "lore", they have access to a simulator that creates all kinds of whacky shit in-narrative, so that is NOT a valid excuse!
Hell, who even knows if they're still trying to seriously get a multiplayer mode going for this game, which, if they are, is a whole other can of worms...
No, the game won't die anytime soon; the FATE IP is strong enough to carry the actual game itself, and new characters will continue to make them fistfuls of money so it's not going to be unprofitable for a long, long time. But if people are being honest, no one would play this game if it wasn't for the FATE IP being plastered over it (hence why DW's other title flopped, let's be real here). It IS that bad. It IS that barebones. It has been that way for years, and it will continue to be this way for years to come, if not the rest of it's life.

Just putting in my two cents, I think a lot of people would totally go for themed welfare events, much like they did with the various Liz welfares from the Halloween Trilogy.
Some themes wouldn't even require much of an excuse plot, such as Guda Guda, Summer, and Christmas. Given how well it sounds like Halloween 2021 was received, they might even be able to get away with making those into month-long events, too.
Just off the cuff, maybe Lasengle could also put together some sort of Heian-themed event where players could get Kintoki (Rider), Shuten (Caster), and Kiichi Hogen, though I feel like that's getting into highly speculative territory.

Adding another two wordy cents, if Lasengle actually stops doing reruns and main interludes, I wonder how that might affect the NA schedule two years down the line so as to fit things around the relatively early anniversary.
Up through the 5th anniversary, it seems NA has simply delayed the last event before the anniversary (which has always been a rerun) to ensure the anniversary would run the first week of July (which also helps with pacing out events somewhat evenly). This works out because reruns don't introduce any new limited SSRs, who need to be added to the game before they can appear on the anniversary's GSSR.
Next year, NA can probably delay the Ooku Main Interlude until after 7th Anniversary without major issues, but if JP doesn't have any reruns or main interludes between now and the 8th anniversary, NA might have to make some painful choices come 2025. They _will_ have to make some marginally painful choices _this_ year, since the last event before the anniversary (LB6 part 2) introduces limited SSR Melusine, so it probably can't be delayed unless they alter the GSSR.

I also think that Heian-Kyo, Tunguska and Traüm count as main story chapters, they are not like imaginary scramble or Ooku where you could just skip and it wouldn't be a problem, you can't just have the battle with Douman in Olympus and just have him disappear for no reason by skipping Heian-Kyo, the same for Koyanskaya and Tunguska, as well as Holmes and Traüm. They are fully fledged main story chapters so I think the pacing of main story chapters being every 6 months isn't really a problem for me personally, the problem with Mictlan is more that the servants feel unfinished and the people responsible for it seem to be lying ( the whole no new servants because spoiler thing, meanwhile they drop a totally spoiling servant when their ranking gets low despite having a good bulk of already shown potential servants )

okay I gotta ask now: Why are you dismissing 5.5 and 6.5? They quite literally are main story chapters. What's your reason for not acknowledging them? In my opinion 5.5 did A LOT for the story of both Shimousa and previous lostbelts that had Limbo involved such as the 4th.

    • @Khadroth
      @Khadroth  2 роки тому +1

I did acknowledge them. I understand they help fill in gaps in the main story and tell tangential stories of their own. But they don't actually advance the plot of the main story, which is what everyone craves. I think they're great overall, but I don't hold them to the same level as one of the proper lostbelts.
I'll also go so far as to say they're somewhat of a stalling tactic themselves, as I don't think they were originally planned. Back in year 5 on JP, with anniversary Nasu started getting asked how the story was going to end as we had just finished LB5 out of 7. To which his response was that we weren't even halfway. Then we got the announcement of .5 chapters, and the reclassification of the Ooku event as one them after the fact. I can go into why I feel that to be the case, but frankly that could be an entire video itself. Suffice to say, I've always looked at them more as interludes to the main story proper. It doesn't mean I'm dismissing them, so much as pointing out the time gap between main chapters is only getting longer, which isn't a good thing imo.

Launch of big games like Fire Emblem Engage and a lot of sales (including type moon games).
FGO knows how busy some players are, how many of them play other gachas, how many of them work, that is why I say months like this are really good to refresh and avoid being burned out about the game, a lot of other gachas has events after events and, because of that, people stop playing.
Thanks to this "chill" month I could play the LB7 without rushing and translating at my pace, could finish 2 games, started some Type Moon games and, of course, relax.
And again some people get annoyed by something they never promised, I talked on twitter about how obvious is a 31st of January launch for part 2 while some people thought otherwise.
Talking about the grail and coin thing, should be good to have a better way to get it but.... I don't even use it because isn't that necessary lol.
If people only play for the Main Story then.... That don't make sense because every event, even the dumbest of them, has some importance into the story of FGO, but I see a lot of people who use the "want only the Main Story" as excuse but in the end don't even read it.
