When they released this album in '75, they were very excited about it, but the record didn't do well. When asked about the album years later, Geddy remembered the band being high a lot during the recording of the album. It was after the album's commercial failure that Rush were told by their record label to make their music more commercially accessible. Of course, they didn't listen; and 2112 was born.

Keep in mind this is only Rush's 3rd album and only the 2nd with Neil and he was still exploring his range and capabilities as a songwriter. By-Tor on the previous record was their first stab at a long form style of music and The Necromancer was merely the continuation of that. So it may seem a bit more basic than later offerings, but they were still trying to find their voice. And of course the next album's foray into this realm is the more polished 2112. But I adore The Necromancer. Its a long song featuring a young band rocking their faces off. Great pick and analysis, guys.

"Three travelers, men of Willowdale" is a tongue in cheek reference to Geddy and Alex's neighborhood in Toronto from which they hailed originally. It also sounds rather Tolkienesque, which is quite fitting, as The Necromancer was one of the various names given to Sauron in the Middle Earth canon.

They already Real RUSH fans. Done a LOT of their stuff. But they need to do all of CARESS of STEEL. Especially side two of the album and listen to "The Fountain of Lamneth" is their 2nd longest song and is their 1st side long "Concept song" . Six parts. The precursor to 2112, which they've done. And some of Neil's best drum work imo. The whole album really is an album of "deep cuts". Bastille Day really kicks ass as well and Lakeside Park is about a park that Neil used to go to as a kid. Then there's "I Think I'm Going Bald", good rocking tune about hair loss of all things, lol. If you're listening to deep cuts and enjoying them, you're a real fan. I was 13 when this came out in 1975. First heard it in 1976. Talk about going WOW. The Necromancer became one of my top 5 RUSH favorites and the album my 2nd favorite.

Dude the radio songs are the pretty face and this is the personality!!! Mind Blown. Perfectly said. I will say that out of their entire catalog Caress of Steel had been known to some as the least popular. The critics hated it and it didn't sell very well which prompted the record company to tell them to not write like this anymore. This is the album where they really started experimenting and finding their sound with Neil. It was a necessary album that shows the natural progression of where they would ultimately end up. They started in Fly by night and really pushed the boundaries on this one. Just remember 2112 would be the next album. 2112 was them giving the finger to the record company and continuing to do what they wanted. If it wasn't for this album they may not have been pushed or inspired to give us the Epic 2112. As a Rush fan I still love this album personally just saying it wasn't at the level of the previous Fly by Night or anything that would follow after. Totally agree with your ratings. Still top notch musicianship, but compared to Hemispheres? Not even close. You should really do Hemispheres! As always you both are on point!

Listened to "Jaws". Ooooh. I can see why you've been obsessing! The lyrics and atmosphere created... So beautiful. I'm hooked and can absolutely relate to what is being conveyed. This is a single and not part of an album, correct? I need to dig further into "who" is this group and other albums. Thank you for sharing!! Have a great day. :))

@@lisaw5604 Had no doubts you love Jaws :) yeah it was just released as a single, then they have two other short eps, and just released their first full length a couple of months ago. Everything is so good! A song like Nazareth i thought was decent but the last two days it's just grown so much. Levitate and Dark Signs were huge growers too. The night does not belong to god, the offering, sugar were all instant loves. Higher is my favorite by them for sure.

This song is about them! The 3 lonely travelers, "Men of Willowdale" that's where Alex and Geddy grew up. They "Travel the river Dawn" is them following the Dawn River to downtown Toronto where they recorded this album at "Mercury Records". The record company is "The Necromancer" and they are the "Snow Dog" standing up to and defeating the corporate establishment. Read the words and the story is clear. This is Neil really opening up and letting his creativity out as a young hungry artist.

💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥
From the back of the stadium
    She’s easy to see
    Standing up at the stage
    In her Starman tee
    From Anthem to Limelight
    To YYZ
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    And all of the rockers
    And all of the heshers
Well they dreamed of the day
    That they might get her
    And drive her away
    In a Red Barchetta
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    Philosophers and ploughmen
    They can’t resist her call
    They cannot choose
    Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
    They've gotta love her
    No she doesn’t say "Pert"
    And she doesn’t say "Part"
Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert"
‘Cause he’s close to her heart
Say a prayer for John Rutsey
He was there at the start
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    Philosophers and ploughmen
    They can’t resist her call
    They cannot choose
    Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
    They've gotta love her
Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush? (X a lot)
    But she listened to Rush!
    The blacksmith and the artist
    They can’t resist her call
    You cannot choose
    Not to decide
So you’ve got no choice at all
No you’ve got no choice at all
    You’ve gotta love her!

This is one of my favorite Rush songs and there’s so many small details you can hear that you wouldn’t with normal headphones and it made the song feel more new after hearing 1000 times. The next songs you should check out from Rush are The Camera Eye (very underrated song from moving pictures with a great guitar solo at the end) Losing It from Signals, a very good song to listen to when you’re baked, and Open Secrets from Hold Your Fire, and has imo one of Alex’s best guitar solos. You need to realize this is their third album and only second one with Neil. Singing to Niel’s lyrics was a change from the first album that Geddy was still going through. Everything honestly was still changing and developing. Having heard maybe more of later albums first. From the first album “Rush” to “Fly By Night” to “Caress of Steel” you can here his voice evolve. These first few albums where exactly that ,the first! The first you’re hearing Geddy’s vocal abilities and bass, the first you’re hearing Alex’s runs, solos and rhythms. The first you’re hearing Neil’s complex melodic drum fills. These first three albums are the building blocks of what became 2112 musically at least. Neil wrote all the time. From then on the car was built, the engine was hot, it was time to put some miles on this sonic life chariot.

IMHO, the guitar solo in "Under the Shadow" is the greatest solo of all time. And this version is the greatest of all time. You watch guys like John Petrucci play this and he tries to turn it into a shredfest. This solo has so much freaking feeling to it. It was 1975 and nobody was ready for this. You need to take this album and song in to context of Rush's evolution. Neil Peart joined the band after Rush's first album. They went on tour to promote the album. While on tour they wrote Fly By Night and recorded it in just a couple of weeks. Immediately after recording Fly By Night they toured to promote this album. While on tour they wrote Caress of Steel. At the end of the tour they recorded it. So these guys had only known one another for two years. And were still getting to learn how to play together as a unit. To already be so tight a unit in this amount of time is staggering to my mind. Once again proving what monster musicians each of them are.

This song for me shows how the vocals are used as the music to lead up to the verse which is the guitar solo. Alex’s solo at times has similar up-and-down inflections like someone speaking as if confirming what the lyrics said. I’m so glad you got to this album. For some reason unbeknownst to me it seems to get left out when talking of Rush. That last little ending bit that repeated three or four times had so much emotion in it. It was the story’s danouemen. Fading out saying it’s all done we’re going home we’re going home. And that my friends is how you make almost 15 minutes of engaging, dripping with talent music.
