  • This might be the best RUSH up to this point in their careers. The Necromancer has all the best elements of what RUSH is known for. Songwriting, story telling, musicianship...and to a degree that's off the charts. I am blown away by this song. Intense and amazing.

Hi everyone. As you can see, it's been a couple of weeks since OLR has posted any Rush reactions. It is my sad duty to inform you that after listening to the Fountain of Lamneth, he lost all power of speech and rational thought. The sheer awesomeness of this 20 minute masterwork was too much for his brain to process. He is recuperating and hopes to be able to post something coherent soon.

Just what are the majority of twenty two/three year olds doing with themselves in this day and age? Actually a rhetorical question.
Just one of the many reasons RUSH was, is, and will always be the greatest band ever. Not to mention, besides their mind blowing talent, these are some of the nicest guys out there. Not your typical once we got rich we got screwed up bands. Always the consummate professionals.

It's always utterly amazed me how just 3 guys could make this sound! Mike Oldfield is the same - crazily talented! But RUSH could play this live, on stage, and still be mind blowing and actually better than the recorded versions!

I remember when this album came out. Running to the record store, then tucked away in my bedroom with the head phones turned up. This was music that went to another level because I grew up listening to Ma and Dads Country Albums which were a stepping stone (maybe a Gateway) to music that really moved me, including the lyrics. I really like this album as well as all the early ones, maybe because I was there in the beginning and each new album was an adventure.

I've listened to this song probably a thousand times, I still get shivers everytime I hear Geddy sing that verse in Into The Darkness, the road is lined with peril the air is charged with fear.

Dude! You finally summed up what all of us Alex Lifeson fans have known all along, it’s his imagination and style that moves him to the forefront of so many other guitarist without having to be an Yngve Malmsteen virtuoso. He’s an Absolute Killer Guitar Master, bar none. I love Jimmy Page’s riffs and guitar work, but I adore Lifeson’s Uniqueness and mastery of the music itself. It’s plain and simply, Music To The Ears. It has the slower riffs that build tension and excitement that are just beautiful. It has the headbanger hard solos, it has amazing lyrics, tells an amazing story, the composition is top notch, just perfection. Which, of course, was 2112! This is still one of my favorite Rush albums, and it shows a direction that Rush would take in their future, much like the album Meddle did for Pink Floyd. After Neil’s death, I talked with a friend about him. He knew about his drumming but had no idea that Neil is probably the best rock lyricist in history. He is one of a list of what I consider three lyrical geniuses in rock/metal. The other two, Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) and Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) are not quite as poetic, but their lyrics are every bit as intelligent. Anyway, After discovering Rush, with each new album purchase, I remember devouring the lyrics trying to decipher what Neil meant. As a Journalism major in college, this task brought me great enjoyment. His ultimate lyrics are probably from Limelight which is Neil’s (A very shy and private guy off stage) very personal take on the dichotomy of the life of a rock star. You are surrounded by hero worship and fame, but, also constantly hounded so you have no time to yourself and are never left alone in public. The chorus reads Living in the limelight, the universal dream, for those who wish to seem. And those who wish to be must put aside the alienation, get on with the fascination, the real relation, the underlying theme. What a perfect and poetic description of the rock star life.

Anyway, I took a cassette player and some Jensen coax speakers out of a car and also the tapes. I don't remember the year , but I hooked up the speakers and played a tape. It happened to be Rush. I played it as loud as it would go. It was life changing. The tape was Caress of Steel. I got over being a thief, but now I am almost glad that I stole that stuff. I'm now an honorably discharged veteran, and a Rush fan for life. If I was given a choice to listen too any one band in my life, I would choose Rush. So, your points about Neil were spot on. He is from the technical school of drummers and he is the best of that school of drummers, but he is also better than anyone from the power school of drummers, as well. Plus, unlike most drummers, he is a true percussionist, not just a drummer. Look at the liner notes for each album and see what all he plays. I have seen such items as a crotales, a Glockenspiel and even plywood listed as being played on different albums. He is the best drummer ever, but that tends to overshadow his other talent, which I feel is better even, than his drumming.

To think that the record company didn’t get this album, Paul Stanley didn’t understand this album when they played it for him while on tour and the album was not well received by all. Then there ultimatum was there next album. Needless to say the rest is history. Thank you for your wonderful reaction! I have been a fan since day one.

The Fountain of Lamneth will do the same thing to you. This is my favorite on the album but some of Neils drumming (you guys know what I’m talking about) is really mind blowing. And the section No One at the Bridge has a really underrated guitar solo. You’ll love it

Oh boy, i cant wait for you to hear the next song!! A different kind of epic from Rush, but when i say its epic, its ALL epic. Drums, Bass, Guitar, AND Geddy's vocals. A truly incredible song that doesn't get enough love.

This is one of my favorite Rush tunes. Tasty multi-track guitar all the way through. A simple story with descriptive music, as always. The guys blew me away with this track and then Fountain came next. Man, I love this album.

The first solo is, to me, the defining Alex Lifeson solo that lay the foundation of every lifeson solo after.
I am not talking what song previous to the necro in terms of hits.
This is that prog nod to king crimson 21st century schizoid man jam.
The 4 sections/passages are in each section, are alex's dna. This era thru signals was rush' greatest era.
I loved Rush lifeson was the music, not geddy's synth.
There is no argument or discussion about it.
I waned after signals / terry brown when geddy and neil took over the direction from alex.
    It was never the same.
I loved gtr era rush, not synth era rush.
Gtr era rush ended with signals.caress, 2112, atwas, aftk, hemi, perm and moving are gtr era with signals being the final nail in the coffin.
There arw moments on every albums after that have a balance back to that, but it was never the same.
