C’mon man. People should stop making reckless comments. If you’re a musician most serious musicians would assume you are a listener not a player. If you do play an instrument my comment should be a wake up call and a bit alarming. I am not a know it all and do not wanna come off like an asshole, trust me! I’m just a guy that has been playing the drums for over 35 years and a bit of a multi instrumentalist but not a pro but a very serious student and I know the instrument. There are guys that will play circles around John and can do what he does very well but he can’t do what they do! We have never seen him play serious Bop and world percussion. There are guys that can do it all. Vinnie, Dave, Steve Smith, Antonio Sanchez, Adam Deitch, Billy Cobham, Marco, Dennis Chambers, about 50 Gospel drummers, and clearly Virgil Donati can be safely and responsibly called the best drummer in the world. Music is not like sports were points, runs, knock outs, and incredible feats and numbers place and rank athletes but there are similarities. Virgil Donati was doing stuff 30 years ago that was beyond anything Jon is doing today. If there was a BEST based on skill level and coordination and independence than there are not 100’s but 1,000’s of better players. Virgil and Dennis can lead with both hands and play stuff that we have not seen Jon do. VINNIE!!! WTF!!! HIS HANDS and playing level was better than JT in the 70’s. I love JT so its not like I ain’t a fan but I personally know guys that are better players…. But C’mon 😂 there are guys that can play EVERYTHING on a INSANE level and as far as I’ve seen that is not JT. Also, he’s not doing things no one else is doing, and if your into this style of playing what about Brian Tichy? He’s the only guy playing that style of John Bonham that has really expanded on it that I’m aware of. And what about Jason Bonham playing quarter notes on the bell during Fools in the rain!!! Marcus Gilmore on the other hand!!!! Holy Shit! And what about Cindy Blackman? She would light Jon on fire and blow him out the water, they are not in the same universe. If Buddy Rich was alive and you asked him who was a better more skilled drummer Jon or Cindy….? Well, we already know the answer. 😂 yo, I swear I mean well and am a very nice guy, I just take that ‘best drummer in the world” comment very serious 😂
@@williamperri3437That’s not the point though however, music is all about one’s individual style. And none of those drummers you named can do what Jon does that way Jon does it! 😉
Jon Theodore is one of the ‘new’ greats, even tho he’s been around for a while. In the same league as Bozzio, Pocaro and Colaiuta but for this generation. Love to see it.
@@budwudd nah he's like bonham's spiritual successor plus legendary jazz fusion chops. this video doesn't exactly demonstrate that, for sure, but his role on those first 3 TMV releases (plus amputecture but his drums are mixed so damn low) was top tier for the decade and beyond. i guess his prominence in popular bands and career longevity can't really touch those other guys but his performances are proof enough for me that he pushes the art just as far as the old greats.
John Theodore is a god and needs to be on UA-cam stuff A LOT more. I haven't even seen one drum guy react to his stuff, like they do other drummers - so weird since he might be the best rock drummer in the whole game right now. He may even be the GOAT. Also, these two dudes need to be in a band together. For real.
@@jdredshiftI like Tool and Carey a lot. But I think it comes down to note choice - what and when to play. I think Theodore's sense of what to play and when is better than Carey's, better fits with the song - he just nails the groove over and over again, no matter the time signature or band (in the Volta, in Queens, in One Day as a Lion). Carey plays complex stuff but not always with power in a way that grooves. Theodore really is like Keith Moon and Jon Bonham had a baby. The freedom and wildness of Moon with the power and groove of Bonham. The GOAT. That's just my opinion anyway.
@@mdav30 I love both also, but have to admit what you pointed out. Danny is pushing time to other dimensions though...so both have their strengths which makes them unique. Theodore has a groove that cannot be denied, Danny would even say that for sure!
@@mdav30 I think it’s hard to compare the two. One plays in a more ambient band, and that’s going to completely change the timing and groove. Both styles have their place. I think people forget how important the balance of elements are, as Jon is usually a driving force for the band so his playing is a main element, while Danny’s subtle but intricate playing help accentuate the ambiance of tool while also complimenting the progressive song structures.
Can't be done. You'd need Cedric and Omar to get back on the horse and that'd kill them. That was a once in a lifetime band. Blacklight Shine is pretty cool though, and Jon is making rad music with QOTSA.
I just saw the Volta live and they had a good drummer playing a lot of Theodore parts because they pulled the most songs from Deloused and Frances. But she just wasn't hitting with the force of Theodore and his ability to swing is just an X factor. Would LOVE to see them reunite - I'd be there in a heart beat.
I really like the little setup jon plays on the snare at 3:05 and 3:16...just effective and a useful kind of thing. The whole groove there is great, love the choked hihat feeling.
Now lets talk about how wood affects tone :D. This example is a bit extreme but still, so good. And Jon, he´s an animal. That rhythm in second part, sound unplayable.
Jon is one of the most underrated drummers, glad his part of QOTSA now…been killing it since TMV, wish we got another One day as a lion
Jon Theodore is hands down the best drummer in the world! He deserves more attentions!
he really is a high skilled drummer, world class for sure, youtube needs a ot more content of him playing
fer sure bro.
Согласен! Думаю у него всё впереди

Jon Theodore absolutely plays with everything he has, all the time and I love him for it.
False - he only plays with 1/2 of what he has.
@@if_art015 I don't disagree with that either. I think QOTSA holds him back a little.
I love the pridgen era of mars volta but jon is the man. So groovy and creative.
There were drum parts Thomas Pridgen just couldn't quite finesse like Jon Theodore. Great drummer, but a little heavy handed.
Check out Isaiah's band, Earthless.
Been listening to them for years, incredible stuff
Theres no one doing it better in heavy psych jamming imho. Earthless is incredible
And golden void
And Golden Void!!!
🙌🙌
Jon also played in Golden, which should definitely be called out. That band was WAY ahead of its time.
Yeah man. Napenda Judy is an absolute jam
Ugh seeing Jon like that brings me back to the older days of TMV! 🤘🏽😭
Jon Theodore has Elvin Jones influence for sure, Phenomenal!

He is a fantastic drummer for sure, but to put him on the same level as those guys is really a stretch.
Throw on deLoused by Mars Volta and tell me otherwise. Also, name some others

He is undoubtedly amazing. But the GOAT? I think Danny Carey of Tool might have something to say about that 🤔

Love em both, but Carey easily. Don't think Theo could play Carey's stuff the way he could play his
john theodore is john bonham incarnate
That fill Theodore plays about 3:44 - 3:50 is absolutely fucking insane
Triplets sound good!
not bad
Wtf?
A match made in heaven. Two of my favorite players totally locked in together!
John theodore blow my mind, its incredible
"These drums rip" was my favourite quote from Jon
Get Theodore behind TMV again!!
That would be fantastic

fucking Jon theodore being the best.
Jonny #1 and Kool Keith, #1 Producer…. AM HAPPY

Nice shirt Jon!!!
Foo fighters need this sr.
These two should form a band.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I LOVE YOU JON!!!!!!! best drummer ever!!!
Love these men.
There are a couple tracks they are on together on the life coach record with/by Phil Manley that fuckin rip
This has convinced me you only really need guitar and drums. As long as the drummer is a bad ass
Oh yeeeaaaaa baby
beast of a drummer
Jon “The Black John Bonham” Theodore
Holy shit that was Amazing!👊❤
Didn't know about this... wow.
Now do cardboard cymbals 😜
Love jon
Any possible scenario, where these cardboard sessions end up on Spotify ?
How close was he to just bust out a little cicatriz esp ✌🏼😜
Coool
This is simply a great pairing. Is there an album or EPs coming out?!
Cheers, Nicko for sending me this link.
Oh shit, I wasn’t clapping. I am going to do a response video tomorrow
If I get like 10 likes, I’ll do it
That was strong 🔥
Jon Theodore's real name is ZEUS.
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Every musician: Tone wood! Tone wood! 🤨
This video: Hold my beer. Watch this!! 😆
Why am I just finding this?
🔥🔥🔥
WHERE IS THE FULL THING!?
Yeah, for real !! U just know those 2 musta jammed for God knows how long.
Oh shit, I wasn’t clapping
wow mantap
As if youd fire Jon Theodore.
These guys need to hook up with a sweet bass player and just jam for an hour and put it out. Id pay excellent money for it.
Everything sounds a bit boxy.
A real corrugated tone
atleast they thought outside of the box
Hey hey!!!
Fuckin black Paul Newman killed it
Ok now do Omar Rodriguez Lopez vs. Jimmy Chamberlin
not just about making snowboards outta tempered glass or styrofoam anymore eh boys?
isaiah - miss that dude
I named my dog after that there drummer.
Where the fuck do you find the full recording of this?!?!
Check out golden void
Wait. So when they called this "cardboard" sessions, they actually meant like real cardboard?! The drums and guitar are both made of cardboard?!
Whatever happened to Jon Theodore ?
He's in Queens of the Stone Age
🫠
WTF DUDES FIFTY YEARS OLD LOOKS LIKE A TEEN
Now lets talk about how wood affects tone :D. This example is a bit extreme but still, so good. And Jon, he´s an animal. That rhythm in second part, sound unplayable.
*corrugated fiberboard
This makes no sense. I mean Jon Theodore could play wet paper drums and still make it sound great.
Homme's deadly mistake is to underuse Jon Theodore. what a shame
