I really hope Levy manages to do it, but it's going to take a lot more than 3 years. Gaining 150 elo at OTB classical chess, when you're already 2400 is extremely difficult, not to mention Levy being out of form. Levy would have to quit youtube, study chess a minimum of 5 hours a day, and play every single tournament he possibly can. If he does that, it will take anywhere from 4-6 years for him to get the GM title. To follow this plan Levy would have to neglect his channel, his financial obligations in his household, and lose a LOT of quality time with his wife, not to mention delaying having children which they may want to do. There's a reason there are only a few thousand grandmasters in the world. You have to literally give decades of your life up for a board game. Most people are not prepared to do that.

@@georgepantzikis79885h a day sounds doable if his job is just UA-cam. 3 more hours to make content (perhaps based on the studying) and that's a normal job. I'm not trying to criticize him but that's a weird way to frame what's likely just a skill issue

I'll clarify my original comment for the people who didn't understand what I meant; Hikaru thought that Tyler1 wouldn't even make it to 1500 which everyone else thought. This means that his knowledge of what people can achive might be a bit flawed as he didn't understand an obvious case. Also the thing about him thinking that Levy can get the norms but not the rating is a bit weird as there is sizeable amount of 2500 rated players who struggle to become GM simply because of the norms being so hard to get.
OTB chess and online chess are still different though. You can get to 1500 fast like Tyler if you grind hard enough but OTB you have to wait for events and grinding 150 points to 2500 can take years.
However, Levy is still young and its quite possible for him to get GM before he retires but odds are that its gonna be tough getting there.

Here is Hikaru’s standpoint: he does not think you will be GM. He says it’s unrealistic however he is not saying that it is impossible. It’s unlikely but there is always a chance: at the very least he is happy to see Levy doing well in his return to OTB

We're all rooting for Levy, Hikaru is too (hell, he even said Levy is decently capable of getting his norms), but this is just a bit of realism that has to be heard.
Saying that getting from 2350 to 2500 elo is hard is not bashing Levy's ability in chess, it's just a fact of the system. Idk how long it'll take Levy, but like I said, everyone's rooting for him. It'll be a great day to see him finally go from Inventory Manager to General Manager.

Logic says it's too late for Levy to be a GM and that's where Hikaru is coming from but stranger things has happened. Tyler went from an adult who doesn't even play chess to 1900 rating. If Levy has the same insane grind mindset that Tyler has then I would say he still has a chance to be gm.

He does not need a GM title to beat GM players,if he is commited I think he will be GM eventually after some time he just needs to commit to that goal, that's what I think.
No matter how long it takes I think he will be a GM.
The title and score of GM is meaningless. If you can regularly beat GMs, you may as well be a GM. And Levy has already beaten several in his first return to comp after like 2-3 years of chillin.

Mainly cause you sorta gotta beat gms judt to get norms and the rating.
I think Levy might fill the rating gap if he keeps playing norm tournaments here and there.
The norms on the other hand focus on performance rating which Levy has been getting close to getting one. He just needs to play slightly higher rated tournaments.

Levy is really angry at Hikaru though, he has a really weak mentality, that must be why he stopped playing as a teen, then again after he got his IM title.
He can't handle the pressure, sure Hikaru has also dealt with crumbling under pressure, but it's not like he gave up, he just went from top5 to top20(before he started streaming).

150 classical rating points is easier than three gm norms?
Hikaru thinks that Levy is good enough to beat some GMs, but is worried about the time/effort it will take to get the elo points.
Rating requires consistent high-level play, while the norms only need that performance in single tournaments

It's not about being able to beat even a large handful of GMs in single games that signifies someone is worthy to be a GM (even less so for online rapid and bullet games). Instead, it's about the required expertise of being consistently good enough to get 2500 rating points and also the ability to dominate in multiple extremely competitive OTB events for the GM norms

Okay. I always thought that Hikaru was dunking on Levy's skill. It is clear now that Hikaru is doubting Levy's dedication to the grind.
Levy will run out of steam these next years. He will make let's say 80 points, then lose 20, make 30, lose 30 etc etc, and same with the norms, he will get one, the not get the second, etc etc. After two years of very intense work and pressure he will be around 2480 with one norm and totally exhausted and give up. Being a IM and youtuber Is his destiny and is not bad at all. Basically he always lacked the composure of a GM and now is too late to overcome that.

@@colezee7640saying "getting 150 rating points is pretty tough" is a vague statement, not a prediction. he's giving him half GM credit because too much/little support could mess with Levy's head which is last thing he needs
I'm sure Hikaru knows better than most how difficult it is to increase rating at that level. On the balance of all that information, hooked up to a Polygraph, it's no surprise that he doesn't think Levy will make GM. You got to remember that he does really seem want Levy to make it and has even helped him in some practical ways towards that goal.
What needs to be justified?
