@@AudioPilz And ... see you next time. Congrats on the prize, you've earned it. Also that trance track ... maybe you should finish your tracks for a Bad Gear Compilation?
How on earth does he make such labor intensive work on such a regular basis? I can't fathom it. I love his energy, and I take a shot every time he says "I wanna know"
I remember these, and remember wanting one for a while. I think these sold a lot (As did all QUASIMIDI GEAR..especially the 309 unit they made) on the basis of being used live, and not having to take your brick of a laptop back then, or a PC (OR even ATARI ST) based set up with you, to do your live set(s). But perhaps many people just couldn't produce anything more than a track or two that they were happy with, just with the unit alone. I think Jorg Schaff (I think that's how his name's spelt) was responsible for this and a lot of the Quasimidi instruments, and he went on to form Radikal Technologies, with their SPECTRALIS range of grooveboxes, amongst other things. Surprisingly, whilst the sound quality improved significantly, the user interface become more complex, with a 2 line backlight LCD screen employed to display even more functionality. Back to the sound, the SIRIUS , as well as the other grooveboxes Quasimidi made (I think there may have been a keyboard controller as well, similar to the Arturia variants) had this lo-fi grungy sound, which i think may have been 12 bit samples interpolated to give a better sheen using the effects. You can hear some odd stuff in the raw samples, which gives the game away. It's an odd choice this one, as the prices show how sought after they still are, which may be due to the look or some 90s nostalgia-based halo effect. But it's dated faster than a pair of flared combats with a glowstick in the backpocket, due to the sounds on it, and if you're brave enough to reprogram the whole thing, what you'll get out of it will be mostly of the same ilk. No matter what you do, everything that comes out of it will have that grungy, slightly lo-fi, distorted overcoating. If i remember correctly, it always sounded good coming out of the mini keyboard section P.A.'s in a shop, but when you plugged headphones in, you'd wonder where all the grime and even occasional hiss was coming from. Like using an old performance car, it has its moments of brilliance, but pushed hard and the flaws become noticeable. And you'll be grappling to steer it, to prevent your sonic drive from ending up in the nearest hedge.
@@AudioPilz i know. I wanted one for months, and then the RM1X came out. The internal sound engine is average, but it had one of the best sequencers ive ever seen. Same goes for its succesor, the RS7000.

The Rave-O-Lution 309 is actually a beast for drums if you like a grungy, dirty sound. The sequencer is very easy to use and straighforward too. The bass synth kinda sucks though. If you get one, make sure it has the drum expansion. Worth it!

Well done on receiving this award. If you ask me I think that you certainly more than deserved it. The fun I had reminiscing all the bad gear I owned during the last two and a half decades and seeing you make them come to live again has been true bliss. Ahhh. Quasimidi. The built quality was awesome. I have owned a maxxed out Rave-o-lution and a Raven. Those where so freaking awesome back in the days. Oh yeah: I totally enjoyed the Austrian pronunciation of 'Sirius'. It sounds so much cooler than the English or Dutch pronunciation. Instant techno.
This was one of the best synths in the series, I don’t know how it got to Bad Gear... Love how you pronounce Sirius the German way :) Btw, it would be interesting to see a Casio CSM-1 (or its Hohner counterpart, the MSE-1, which I can donate to you)
I own the Quasimidi Polymorph - my brother the sirius, I like and love the Polyymorph so much more... however, Quasimidi-Team where nerds, not really musicians, they figured out what should be cool, useful and extraordinary - and they did it. I fondly remember the Quasimidi ads that would be in every keyboard magazine. I think it was just the amount of controls that seemed very appealing. They were way out of my price range at the time and no one around here had one, so I settled for Buzz Tracker running with Rave-0-lution samples. Which probably aged a lot better considering. Indeed the 90's were the peak of inspirational dance music production. Early "Goa" and proper trance thereafter were something else. Twas an amazing time 👍👌🙏
There's some short vocoder bits in the final musical bit but it was almost impossible for me to squeeze some proper sounds out of it. It's funny because all I hear is either "best vocoder" or "worst vocoder"
Back in the early MP3.com days ( you know, where Darude ORIGINALLY released Sandstorm? ) there was a fellow named 303 Infinity that rocked loads of Quasimidi gear to make late 90’s Euro-Trash ( trance, psy, “acid” ) music. Their gear always intrigued me, but is still too expensive for my tastes. I’ll just buy a JP-8000 or Virus Indigo for those prices 😂
Feels like the guys who built this had a real vision and were technically very ambitious. “Phonetic Spectral Transformer” is presumably just techno babble for “Vocoder”? 🤣
Had one of these back in 2008. Enjoyed it while I had it but then someone broke into my house and stole that and a couple other things. In this same vein another cool digital synth that people love to hate is the Oberheim OB-12. I have one and love it but people dog this synth all the time!

Not gonna lie, the full Mortal Kombat warning made me want one. 😂
Safety first!;)
Congrats on the win! You rock!
Thank you so much!
It was a clever move to pixel out the Techno Viking face.
BTW, I felt like they wanted to make the ultimate synth at the time, which is nice.
I really appreciate Quasimidis ambition in those days
I really appreciate the Techno Viking in those days.
Congrats on winning the title and thank you for making our 2020 better ❤
Thank you so much!
its comments like "animal diarrhea inducing trance anthem" that keep you on top
Happy to hear that! THX!
If I have known about the poll, I would have voted for you. Great videos that always make me laugh. 👍
Thanks!
You completely missed the vocoder section! This thing came with a gooseneck mic as standard.
There's some short vocoder bits in the final musical bit but it was almost impossible for me to squeeze some proper sounds out of it. It's funny because all I hear is either "best vocoder" or "worst vocoder"
Congratulations on your award . Well deserved and long overdue
Thanks!
I won't even dare to say how much I paid for it ;)
Congrats! You deserve it. You keep me going!
Thanks!
Ad-breaks in the middle of every song?
Yeah youtube is a thrall of the dark lord...
Sorry, still trying to find the sweet spot.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch! :) I remember reading about the Sirius in the german "Keyboards"-magazine in the late 90s. Always thought it looked cool.
It had a mesmerizing effect on me ;)
Feels like the guys who built this had a real vision and were technically very ambitious. “Phonetic Spectral Transformer” is presumably just techno babble for “Vocoder”? 🤣
Yeah, Jörg Schaaf and the other dudes really knew their stuff
Congratulations :) that intro sounded really good!
Surprised me, as well! Thanks!
Had one of these back in 2008. Enjoyed it while I had it but then someone broke into my house and stole that and a couple other things. In this same vein another cool digital synth that people love to hate is the Oberheim OB-12. I have one and love it but people dog this synth all the time!
Just read a comment of someone who broke into a house to get a Sirius...
Congratulations , m8!!! You truly earned that award!
Thanks!
