    Two years ago I bought a used 1990s Bridgewood 15" planer, which the Grizzly is based on. Your video helped me put it back together after I took it apart, thank you

    Great unboxing and setup, and we hope you've been enjoying the planer! Here's a quick tip for the gearbox oil that will actually be a manual update shortly for the G0453Z Planers (and others in the planer lineup): The "fill plug" noted in the manual is actually the air vent for the gear box (much like a pressure valve on a gas container), and the actual oil inlet is located on the top of the machine.
    From the front of the machine, on the right side directly above the gear box itself are two cap screws (size M8-1.25 x 50; Part #429 in the Manual Parts List, Pg. 50) inset into the cast-iron top housing.
    The cap screw closest to the front of the machine should be removed completely, the air vent plug (aka "fill plug") removed, and a funnel inserted into the top cap screw location. You'll know this is the proper cap screw by carefully inserting a thin screwdriver into the hole to ensure it carried through the top cover and into the gear box. Note: Ensure you have the drain plug installed and tight now!
    The air vent plug works double-duty as well. Not only will it allow the oil to enter the gearbox easily, but it also tells you when the gear box is full when oil begins to trickle out, so have paper towels or a shop rag placed beneath the vent hole!
    Fill the gear box with the appropriate oil, re-insert the air vent plug and re-connect the top M8-1.25 x 50 cap screw and you're good to go! We recommend changing the oil after the first 20 hours of operations, then yearly after that for the best performance. Hope this helps!

    I just got the same planer last week, she's a beauty, and can't beat free shipping on machines. Mine came with about a quart more oil all over it, half the decals came right off and wouldn't stick back down, so I ended up removing the grizzly.com completely, and I lost the Z. I dropped the bed rollers completely below the surface, and that took almost all the snipe right out. I also put paste wax on the table so boards still slide through easily. My outfeed roller marks up just as bad too, I've heard of guys taking a file to it and knocking off the sharp edges, but I'm not worried about it atm.

It now seems fine, but it is the last Grizzly machine made in China that I will buy. The

      Interesting.... if you had it to do over again what company/plainer would you go with? I have a Grizzly Bandsaw and I have been overall pleased with it... it had a problem with the work surface (It was uneven) and they actually mailed me a new one free of charge... so their customer service was pretty good from my experience.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023

      I would most likely look for one made in Taiwan with a true helical head and a lower second gear feed speed . Now that you can get the rubber outfeed roller it is not that bad and the lowest cost spiral planer available. Mine was one of the early ones from when they started making them at the new Chinese factory so they may have the bugs worked out by now. I am now looking for a bandsaw and am seriously looking at a different brand after reading about some blade tensioning issues with wider resaw blades.

    • @kevinlemoi7837
      @kevinlemoi7837 6 років тому +1

      I can confirm the blade tension issues. The guide that is on my Bandsaw G0778 is way off when it comes to the 3/4" blade I use for re-sawing, it is set too high. Impossible to get it where it should be on their gauge. When I went to set the "required" tension I had to pull the tension lever so hard that I broke it the first time. When I called Grizzly one of the techs confirmed this was a common problem, though the President swears the gauge is accurate. I also have some pretty significant blade drift when trying to re-saw any stock over 6". I suspect at some point I will put this bandsaw up for sale and will research others like Laguna which I hear is a pretty good bandsaw.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  6 років тому

      With Grizzly it is all about the price point. Laguna is on the top of my list now. They have local dealers if there are problems so you don't have to spend hours trying to get hold of tech support.

  • @georges8348
    @georges8348 7 років тому

    When I work on a new planer with a helical head one of the things on my to do list is to check the torque on the carbide cutter bolts. I usually find a few to a dozen that will tighten up some more. After a month I check them again and I will usually find 2 or 3 that have loosened slightly and will torque them back to spec. When I level tables I use a Machinist's straight edge (Lee Valley) and feeler gauges. I can get the tables to within less than 1/1000" of truly being in plane with the bed. Having a Machinist's straight edge or a machined pieced of 1/4" thick steel pays big dividend when you tune and tweak a machine.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  7 років тому +1

      I just made a video about replacing the cutters because of the tear out I was getting from the head. They were extremely tight and one was frozen in place and I wound up having to use a easy out and center punch to finally break the screw free. I will check the torque again as you advise. Some day I will purchase a straight edge, but I have had good results using a straight level. Thanks for watching.

    • @georges8348
      @georges8348 7 років тому

      Too tight is interesting and something that Grizzly should know about if you feel like telling them. It may save some future buyer from the fun you had. I tune a lot of machinery and have installed a lot of Byrd heads for customers and I've found that too loose is more likely. If Grizzly lists a torque spec in their manual that would be great as some manufacturer just say, "very tight". The Powermatic version of your planer lists 45 to 55 inch pounds in the manual as a good place to be.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  7 років тому

      I sent them a link to the video about replacing them so they could see. Grizzly calls for 50 to 55 inch pounds in the manual which is what the new ones were tightened to.

    There's a furniture shop in my area that is closing soon and they have a G0454 up for auction. I'm thinking of bidding for it to upgrade my DW 734. Can you move one of these things up a ramp and onto a trailer without heavy machinery? It has a mobile base of some sort, but I'll need to load it up onto a trailer and then back down again to get it home. Maybe I should invest in a pallet jack instead?

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  5 років тому +1

      I purchased one of the harbor freight pallet Jack's years ago and have loaded machines that are heavier then this by strapping them to an oversized pallet for stability because they are too heavy with a high center of gravity to tilt as they stand. You will need a come a long to drag it over any changes in incline and plywood to cover the ramps because the front wheels are only 3 inches in diameter and will catch in any cracks. A cherry picker may also work if the trailer is not very tall. Good luck. Thanks for watching.

      Anything is possible but I wouldn't try that. I had to remove a heavy machine from a basement once and hired a backhoe to safely get it out. The guy put the bucket right in the door and we strapped it on. Its top heavy so it could be laid on its side and slid down ramps but things could get damaged. Thanks for watching.

      I am more looking to find out from someone who owns it, is it possible to separate the top, where the machine actually is, from the base and the motor. So, does the top just unbolt from the stand, remove the motor belt and unhook the power cable connection, or is it much more complicated than that?
      I would be much more comfortable trying to move it in two halves even if it is still heavy.

    I JUST ordered this very model planer this morning. I cant believe I found it out of the blue. I am sure that was Jesus guiding me really.
    I have a question that Grizzly could not answer. Check me out when i say I think the rear wheels were already installed at the factory on yours. Am I correct? IF no, how did you get them on, because the manual I downloaded shows they must be installed as part of the setup procedure, after you receive the machine. They even suggest and pictured a forklift to get them on.
    Also, I asked just about every one at Grizzly about the dust chute on the outfeed side of the head stock. Would you believe NO one knew sadly. In their pictures on their website at this very moment, several of the pictures clearly show that the chute came out with a 45 degree angle to the left. Yet other pictures clearly show it to be straight as yours.
    I hope mine is straight. For my dust collector is on the right side of the outfeed table.
    You did a great job. I cant wait. It is back ordered until the end of June, but I will be ready and your awesome video is a REAL blessing to me. Praise His holy name..

    Good morning Sir, I've watched all of your videos on your new Grizzly planer. I'm about to purchase a 3HP helical head planer and I'm stuck between the Jet, Powermatic and Grizzly offerings. Of course the Jet & Powermatic (same ownership) cost between $700 and $1200 more than the Grizzly, but they also come with a 5 year warranty supported by local dealerships. I do have machines from all three lines in my shop and they all work exceptional well and as advertised. In your opinion, do you think the Grizzly planer would provide a lifetime of service in a DIY Hobbyist shop? Thank you for any advice you may offer.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  5 років тому

      Yes it should. I see they now have new models of this planer that are made in Taiwan. Just go through it good when assembling and I recommend getting the rubber outfeed roller if you plan on planing any softer or narrow wood to avoid the embossing. I think it is luck of the draw with these low priced offshore tools and there could be issues with any of the brands. Finding the right tech support agent usually can solve any issues. I have been wanting to buy a grizzly planer for a year now. I have read on the comments section that you would not buy this model again and had problems. What issues did you have and if you were buying one now which make and model would you go with.

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  6 років тому +2

      I had bad embossing of the finished wood from the sharply knurled outfeed roller and very small pieces of tearout from the cutters it came with plus the second speed is to fast to be useable. After calls to customer service and several videos of the problems they finally had a rubber outfeed roller made and sent new inserts. The original inserts were way overtorqued and probably deformed by that. You can buy the roller now also. I would look for a helical head with a smooth outfeed roller and a slower second gear that is made in Taiwan, not China. You may get a good one and can now buy the outfeed roller if you want a good finish on softer wood. Mine works ok now ( still some tearout on softer wood like walnut ), but I was not happy with the time spent on the phone and replacing parts.

      I really have not researched others and won't recommend one I have no experience with. Grizzly is the cheapest option and you may get a good one. Many others make a similar model with a helical head, smooth outfeed roller and slower 2nd speed, but they cost more.

      Prices change everyday lately. It's almost 3 times what I paid for it now. Check the Grizzly website for current prices. Thanks for watching

      I will have to check it out. I am far from happy with the marks the planer out feed roller embosses and have wasted hours with cs and checking and re-checking dimensions. I have changed my mind about Grizzly after this purchase.

    Just as a thought you know that Amps is not a good way to pick a motor, If a motor use less amps it doesn't mean it makes less power. The amp draw of a motor also has to do with how efficient a motor is. You can have a 2.5 hp motor that uses 15 amps or a 3 hp motor that uses 12 amps. Motor two has more power. But that is not all motor speed also plays a role in HP. Just looking at motors amps and HP will not give a good expiation of total cutting power.

      I have a motor that is called 3 hp and draws 12 amps on my Laguna bandsaw and it's probably only really about 1 1/2 hp the way it bogs down so it seems that manufacturers don't really have to meet the specs and can overrate them as a selling point. With offshore tools it's always a gamble. A good US made motor states the efficiency for the calculation. Thanks for watching.

      HP is not a great calculation for power either. A motor that turns at 65,000 RPM has a lot of HP but will have almost no torque. Number of motor windings, 3 phase vs induction, Brushed vs Brushless, DC vs AC or permanent magnet motor. This makes it really hard to compare one motor to another.
      Most of are tools are Induction motors because of cost but build quality will change there efficiency. So trying to figure out motor power by Amps or HP is not a great way. I have a 3 HP router that is 3 HP and a 3 HP shaper. Both are 3 HP but the shaper is 5 times more powerful why? It all comes down to torque. Shaper makes 3 HP at 3250 RPM the Router makes 3 HP at 16,000 RPM. (3250X5=16250) My CNC machine makes 15 HP but is half the size of the Router motor but turns at 65,000 RPM.
      HP is a caculation of torque and RPM
