The only time I was ever able to watch Carson live was while visiting California in 1971, and Joey Bishop was the stand-in host (I don't really remember!) but was amazed at what went on, we got there around 4pm, and left by 6pm. The band played when ever they went to commercials which was neat hearing a number from start to finish. It wasn't taped in one go, they had to stop sometimes to do something, make changes or whatever. Some people were bored, some got angry and they left, but to me It was fun. Johnny Carson is by far better than all of these new night show hosts combined. Johnny Carson was a total comedian that did great jokes on everything other than politics and when he did jokes on politics it was jokes about all politicians in any of these political parties. Today these late night show hosts are only about politics and only about Trump but the jokes are more nasty than funny and these late night hosts are just an extension of what CNN and MSNBC do in their prime time but with these late night show hosts trying to turn what CNN and MSNBC talk about into comedy but they do a very poor job with turning this into comedy. Johnny Carson was a true late night comedian unlike what we are currently getting on prime time TV.
Johnny Carson on occasionally talked about real shows in running on all 3 network that were coming on for new fall season and he would show picture of shows that didn't make it and it was funny the title for the show didn't make it and he showed still picture

OMG *40:24 “The Nut Museum”! All of the suggestiveness from Johnny and Elizabeth was just too much! Especially with the demeanor of such a sweet little old lady and her voice so reserve and demure. Honestly I don’t know if she was doing it on purpose or if was genuine naivety. 😂🤣😂
P.S. *44:10 Look at the Bird Handler’s mouth very carefully... That bird is not singing the man is a ventriloquist! Still pretty funny though.
Amazing always Johnny 😎🌆🇩🇰🇺🇸👀🦅second time around , good as go!!!😊
love you betty white.
we really did have the best actors and actresses and entertainers from the mid 1960s to late 1990s. tyhe best. now look at who they have. anyone that could have fit into our time, they do not like now
I loved the Benny Goodman clip! Obviously, from Johnny's NYC years, when Skitch Henderson was still band leader and Doc was just lead trumpet.
Of course, Ronny Shakes was hilarious. A comedic talent taken way too soon!
Wow him playing with Benny Goodman!
that was great!!!
I watch his rerun every night five days a week. Over the air Chanel I don’t go to sleep. Until I watch it. I never did see the originalsji 10:44 10:46 😅
Lovely
I miss how Johnny might joke about our current political scene.
Likewise. I got it covered. My girlfriend and I do a throwback variety show with music and magic and all sorts of stuff. I open the show with a 5-minute Johnny and personation hitting all the current politics in news. Our show is built on all the things we love from Johnny Carson to Marilyn Monroe oh, David Copperfield, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, all of that. Anyway, Johnny is always opening up for us! Alive and well!
Betty White is still in the running for last survivor of this special. My bet is she and Olivia de Havilland give a toast at Eddie's funeral in 2050.
Typical that they would live the longest. 😑
RIP Betty White
I just love burt laugh.
Burt would laugh so hard that he would giggle. He was always hilarious on Johnny’s show
That’s better than Whose on first!
YEAHHHHHHHHHHH LOVE GARY!!!
It's too bad they didn't keep some of the earlier tapes
Thanks for sharing, do you have the episode from 20 February 1985? I would love to watch it 😔
40:57 everytime she says nuts..I realize how dirty my mind is lol
The Reagan bit inspired by Abbott and Costello
I remember watching this special when it aired when I was in college.
Would have liked to seen more of Burt Reynolds.
*Would have liked to see
All the greats are gone now
please reload video.........audio is heavily muffled and cannot understand anything
I wonder what Johnny did with the box? Looks like he could have glued it back together, especially since it was a 9yr old "heirloom" from the NY days.
Can't blame him for being angry at Rickles acting out! 🤨🤷♀️
Betty white was so precious
Johnny was so mad about that box, and Don Rickles couldn't care less! I'm glad he was able to get it fixed though. Hope Don Rickles paid for it!
what month did this aire?
As it’s the 23rd anniversary of the tonight show starring Johnny Carson, it would have been October 1985
