As Bob Hope eloquently sang "Thanks for the Memories" I'll just keep watching here on UA-cam when I need to go back in time and try to relive how great we really do have it here in America despite today's troubles and an ungrateful nation that we have become.

Staying up with my folks every Friday night to see Johnny and all the boys, the smoking and drinking, the comforting sound of my parents laughing. You can't match that kind of talent today. There was a real sense of freedom back then that Genx and the Millenials will never be able to experience because of the enslaving, stifling PC we have created for ourselves in this brave new world. I'm so very blessed to have seen this for myself and enjoyed those moments I now cherish.

My husband and I were expecting our first baby, and a neighbor and I worked together second shift at a nursing home. We could not go to bed until we watch the tonight show. We loved it so much.

Although I was fairly young when Johnny was in his prime...MY “barometer” on his greatness, echos many of the same sentiments all of you have shared, & that is....NO ONE has ever been able to measure up to him, & the bar he set with his nonpareil talent. If you all recall, the only one to ever come reasonably close to him was Arsenio Hall. BUT, this occurred when Johnny’s retirement was imminent. Probably one of the most complex (& complicated) superstar entertainers to ever exist. But no one can ever question his genius. We will ALL pass away before there is even the slightest chance of anyone being able to replicate Johnny and the master that he was at his craft!
I use to live very close to NBC. My friends and I went to the tapings often. They're some of my best memories. The shows were always fun even during commercials. In contrast I always fell asleep in the audience during SNL in NY. Johnny brought class to everything he did. Something sadly missing today.
I got to see Doc in a tux. Amazing. When you see him sing with Bob Hope and Pearl Bailey, you can get glimpses of his talent as a singer. He choose to hide it most of his performing career. It was our loss.
I spent time in the states in the late 80's and heard people mention Carson but I never watched the show. Through the magic that is the internet I find he really was a great host, could relate to almost anyone and let them be themselves. Its clear he really enjoyed meeting people and was curious about their lives, feats and defeats.
Actually, off stage he was quite reserved and had very few friends. On stage he's still one of the best. I couldn't start watching him till mid seventies when I was old enough to stay up late without my parents.

I was 6 in 1976 and was in love with Johnny. I had a tv in my room and stayed up every night and watched. I saw most of these for the 1st time! I loved them all, Dean, Sinatra, Pickles, Burt and Dom, Bob Hope, George Gobel, I could go on and on.....I loved Dean and Sinatra...mannnn. And ine if the funniest times I ever saw, and I watch it repeatedly tul this day, is with Dom Deluise, Burt Reynolds and Art Carney- comedic geniuses ❤ and they are all gone....thank heaven I still have my memories and you tube❣️❣️❣️ PS-Dov Severinson is still alive at 98❣️ The last of the Mohicans ❤❤❤

And his Ronald Reagan skit, I think, probably does actually top the original "who's on first" of Abbott and Castello - assuming that's even possible. For a stand-up comic who performs on Johnny's show, the fact that they could later view the tape and hear Carson's subtle reactions to their jokes is a huge insight into the process of returning for another appearance. If Johnny liked you, you would become a star.

In regard to the Ed Ames tomahawk throwing segment: When Johnny says, "I didn't even know you were Jewish..."; I wonder if he knew that Ed actually IS Jewish. As of today (April, 2018), at 90, Ed is the last of the Ames Brothers, a former singing act, that is still alive. The brothers', born in MA, last name was actually Urick.

What Johnny meant here at 2:10 was that California on October 1st 1987 experienced a very powerful earthquake. The Whittier Narrows earthquake was 5.9 on the scale and it happened at breakfast time at 7.42am which shook a lot of LA people out of their beds!!

In regard to the Ed Ames tomahawk throwing segment: When Johnny says, "I didn't even know you were Jewish..."; I wonder if he knew that Ed actually IS Jewish. As of today (April, 2018), at 90, Ed is the last of the Ames Brothers, a former singing act, that is still alive. The brothers', born in MA, last name was actually Urick.

@37:00 -- The tomahawk was classic! I'm surprised they let this one go in the 1960s! They were JUST beginning to let shows use MILD words like "hell" and "pregnant" on shows like Star Trek.

What Johnny meant here at 2:10 was that California on October 1st 1987 experienced a very powerful earthquake. The Whittier Narrows earthquake was 5.9 on the scale and it happened at breakfast time at 7.42am which shook a lot of LA people out of their beds!!
