- Between the 4 Special Stage videos I have, this was actually the first one I processed for a video, here.
Know that this game in this video is based on its original Sega CD version instead of the HD Remake that's available on the 360, PS3, and some smartphones. That's the main reason why playing these Special Stages look slower and choppier, because that's how they originally looked.
Since this game is also being emulated, here, you may quickly see messages appear in the bottom-left. The Gens emulator I used must sometimes maintain itself to keep playing the music heard in this video.

Sonic CD's way of entering a Special Stage is the same way as Sonic 1's method: Get 50+ Rings, then jump into the big ring at the end of any Act 1 & Act 2. Even Metallic Madness' first 2 Acts will work in this game, despite Sonic 1's Scrap Brain's Acts not doing so.
The Special Stages of this game take place in different realms in a semi-3D environment. The mission here is to destroy all of the purple & yellow UFOs you find in the Special Stage before time runs out.
You'll lose time anytime you touch water, so stay out of it as much as you can. If you do start to run out of time, a blue & red UFO will appear in the center of the area. Smash it to gain more time.

Sonic CD is different in a lot of things from the regular Genesis Sonics, and their magic treasures, the Time Stones, are a part of the differences. There are 7 Time Stones, and they stand in for Chaos Emeralds for this game and this game only.
The Time Stone color order is: Green, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Cyan, Purple, Red.
Getting them all lets you see the Good Ending as usual, but this time, it also ensures that every Act from there on out has its Good Future already created, meaning you won't have to go to the Past to make that happen.
And just so we're very clear: NO! SUPER SONIC IS NOT IN THIS GAME! Getting all of the Time Stones WILL NOT unlock him.

There's a Secret Special Stage that you can get by pressing Start after all of the numbers in the Sound Test screen are "7". This 8th Special Stage has Eggman looking at you the whole time, and it can take the longest to beat based on how the UFOs move here.
You don't get an 8th Time Stone from beating it. Instead, you just get the credits of everyone responsible for the creation & development of Sonic CD's Special Stages, including the composer of their Japanese song.

- Special Stages 1, 3, 5, & 7 - Japanese Theme with American Zone Clear Theme
- Special Stages 2, 4, 6, & 8 - American Theme with Japanese Zone Clear Theme
- Special Stage Credits Song after Special Stage 8 - Japanese Ending Theme (Cosmic Eternity)
I accomplished this by recording the odd-numbered set first, then I swapped some MP3 files around to record the even-numbered set next. In some of my playthrough videos where you'll find the first 7 in, they'll all use the Japanese version of the song with the American Zone Clear theme to close each of them out with.
I didn't have to do this, but I thought it would give this video a bit more flare and variety. I'm glad it turned out pretty good!

As a Doctor Who fan, I find the fact that the SIXTH special stage has an eye-searing rainbow motif immensely amusing.

I can't beat Special Stage 6 because the background is consistently trying to turn my brain into mashed potatoes, but other than that, they're pretty good.
Man, you make this look easy. For some reason my jumps dont register as a hit on the UFOs at times

That could be because you're not actually close enough to hit it even though it looks like you are; the UFOs being sprites can make depth perception awkward at times.

When I had this game on Sega CD, I could beat these stages every time. Now I suck at them so bad I can't even do it with save states 😞
i think it might because of the time you had it, and now years with better graphics in games you get disoriented with the weird models.

If it weren’t for Christian Whitehead I would have never known this game existed. All I knew growing up was sonic 3. Playing these in my 20’s this game has become my favorite.
5th and 6th are honestly the ones who I have problems the most. The 7th one isn't that bad if not for the shortest grounds when going faster.

I actually find the Special Stages in the HD re-release of Sonic CD on the X-Box 360 and PlayStation 3 much harder because the animation moves at 60 fps instead of the original game's 30 fps.

What is the point of the time stones of they don't make you go super sonic
They automatically ensure a good future in every level. This is extremely useful because if you go to the future at the start of a level, you won’t have to encounter enemies, which is much more powerful than Super Sonic.

You need to get 50 rings to enter the special phases. To enter Robotnik's special phase you need a code for the sound test.

In the mobile version if you want to do the time stone route in metalic madness act 3 You get the bad future so you need to collect 6 of them and metalic madness 2 you need to enter a special stage.
But i did. Both route in one file so i did the robot generator and the time stone route.
Edit: Beacuse these are too easy for me.

Collect 50 rings and reach the end of the stage without losing the rings. Once you reach it, a giant ring will appear behind the goal post jump in it to enter the special stage

The Time Stones and the Chaos Emeralds are completely different things. In Sonic CD, the goal is to travel through time to save the world by changing the future, although is Sonic collects every Time Stone he can permanently correct the timeline. Things like Super Sonic are absent from this game.
