- This took the longest to process, as it's the longest of my 4 Special Stages compilations, so I uploaded it last.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles bring back the big Special Stage Rings that were in Sonic 1, and Sonic CD. However, they are much thicker, and instead of finding them at the end of most Acts, they are instead stashed away in hidden areas scattered all over every Zone in the game between Angel Island to Lava Reef. They stop appearing in every Zone after that. If you can find them, you can enter them anytime you want without needing a certain number of Rings.
All of the Special Stages in this game take place on very small checkered planets. The goal is to, well... "Get Blue Spheres". Nab them all to beat the Special Stage and get a Chaos Emerald for your efforts. Once you collect a Blue Sphere, it'll become a Red Sphere. Don't touch those or you're automatically kicked out of the Special Stage.
There's a trick that, if you create a perimeter of Red Spheres in a group of Blue Spheres of 3x3 or more, you'll turn the entire group into Rings. If you collect all of the Rings in the Special Stage, you'll get a Perfect, which gives you 50,000 points: An instant 1-UP!

As with Sonic 2, if you get all of the Chaos Emeralds, you can become Super Sonic and see the game's Good Ending. If you got them all as Knuckles, you can then become Super Knuckles. HOWEVER, since this is Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you can go further than that.
Launch Base is the last "Sonic 3" Zone, and in this game, it leads directly to Mushroom Hill Zone, the first "Sonic & Knuckles" Zone.
The big Rings you'll find in those Zones flash different colors. Enter one and you'll be taken to Hidden Palace Zone's Emerald Shrine. From there, any number of Chaos Emeralds you had at that point will be taken from you and transformed into unactivated Super Emeralds. This means you're no longer able to become Super Sonic/Super Knuckles. So if you still want to beat the game as just them, you're going to have to avoid every big Ring from there on out!
To reactivate the Super Emeralds, stand on top of a dull grey one to be taken to its Special Stage. The Super Emeralds' Special Stages are the exact same ones as the Chaos Emeralds' if you're playing Sonic & Knuckles on its own.
A new addition in these Special Stages are Yellow Spheres, which act like springs that give you a big jump that skips over several spots in front of you.

The color order for both Chaos & Super Emeralds are: Green, Orange, Pink, Blue, Grey, Red, Cyan.
Winning a Super Emerald causes its essence to find itself at the shrine, reactivating the emerald with its matching color.
If you get all of the Super Emeralds, Sonic can become Hyper Sonic, Knuckles can become Hyper Knuckles, and Tails finally gains the ability to become Super Tails. Sonic and Knuckles' Hyper forms are more powerful than their Super forms, but Super Tails has a very unique quirk about him that probably outperforms the two Hypers, especially against bosses.
Also, you get to see an even better ending once you beat the game. A Perfect Clear of sorts.

Last but not least, there are two extra Emeralds, as well: A Yellow Chaos Emerald, and a Yellow Super Emerald. To reach their Special Stages, you have to first unlock the Stage Select & Debug Mode, then go to the former's Sound Test and go to "1F" on it.
Then Hold A and press Start after highlighting "Special Stage" on the same screen, "Special Stage 1" for the Yellow Chaos Emerald, & "Special Stage 2" for the "Yellow Super Emerald.
Besides being able to carry over the stats of the last data you picked (such as having all 14 Emeralds), both of these Yellow Emeralds don't do anything in the game besides adding an unnecessary Emerald to your total, and once you get them, you're automatically taken to the beginning of Angel Island Zone.
I'll cover how you can unlock Stage Select & Debug Mode in the first place in a different video, as well as how you can do the same in Sonic 1, 2, & even CD!

Anyone notice how the colour schemes of the Chaos Emerald special stages correspond with the order of the prototype Sonic 3 stages?
The first one is brown with a blue sky, similar to Angel Island.
The next one is turquoise, like Hydrocity.
The third one is orange and white, like Marble Garden.
The fourth one is red and white with a night sky, exactly like Carnival Night.
The next one looks like Flying Battery with its orange and purple colour scheme.
The sixth one is blue and light blue, just like Ice Cap.
The last one is yellow and purple, exactly like Launch Base.

Oh God, these stages. One wrong move, and you hit a red sphere and have to find another dang giant ring. These were always absolutely nerve-wrecking to me.
I use save states :3 when i lose i click "Load" button and start it again.

I like how the chaos emeralds soecial stages represent the places we'll go, while the super emeralds represent the emeralds themselves. It's like we're actually unlocking their (and our) true potential.

When I play the Blue Sphere special stages, I don't worry about the rings. All I care about is getting all of the blue spheres, get the Chaos/Super Emerald and get on out.

I usually get rings in special stages but if I get to the one at 19:00 I will just get the blue spheres

@Tio Alien X Kinda, but jumping over the bumpers so you can get the rings is a tricky part. You also need remember where you left your trailing off and jump out of the square and INMEDIATELY turn with the d-pad so you don't touch the spring sphere ruining your chances.

I think getting the master emeralds are harder than getting the choas emeralds

One wrong move, and you mess up your perfect. Especially if you don't know the correct path.

Hint: Pause the game in the areas you don't know where to go or when your're going too fast and it's much easier.

I love how when it comes to the Super Emeralds' Special Stages, you're actually allowed to choose which ones you wish to engage in, in any which order.
Although, if one has an incomplete number of Chaos Emeralds when coming across that Super Giant Ring at the start of Mushroom Hill Zone that will allow them to try for the Green Super Emerald, if my sources are correct.
On the DS Sonic Classic collection, there was a strange all green Stage that I think was the Master Emerald stage, and it would randomly play at either level, and it’s rare for it to even activate. When played, and even if you didn’t collect any blue spheres, you’d automatically collect all Super Emeralds and go Hyper.
..do you have any sort of proof? i also have the game and have absolutely no memory of that kinda of stage, i always had to get all the super emeralds. just sounds a bit fake to me since i haven't seen it myself.

Back in the old days, i played a sonic 3 prototype and the yellow spheres would turn to blue ones
Notice how with the first 7 stages, the color palette matches with the zone order, except special stage 5. It actually matches Flying Battery fairly well tho, just more proof it was meant to be after Carnival Night

The fourth one fucked me up EVERY TIME because of that damn split-second jump you had to make in-between the star balls and the blue spheres you JUST ran over. It took me a while to get the timing right but every time I played a new game, I dreaded coming up to it but went through it anyway. Plus I never got the pattern to make all the rings come out right in this one. I always assumed that you had to do PERFECT squares to make the rings come out and since everything was moving so fast, I never noticed that they all connected into one solid form that COULD make rings appear. God damn it.....
The special stage at 19:14 is the toughest one to me. Especially when it gets fast.

Thanks been replaying this and my muscle memory had gone for a couple of the tougher super emerald levels and this helped immensely.
These special stages used to be complicated for me, now i beat them all without failing or breakin a sweat!
Nice to know theses special stages are in mania, this was useful.
The 10th and 11th special stages (4th and 5th Super Emerald) is total pain. The 4th Super Emerald isn't hard, but to get a Perfect is. Also, here's something to know these stages: It's not the amount of rings that make the character go faster, it's how long you stay in the stage. Roughly about 30 - 45 seconds the speed changes.

The chaos emeralds specials stages are a piece of cake for me but getting all the super emeralds is gonna be a nightmare🥲
Glad to see the blue and yellow special stage from S&K was difficult for others too. Always tricky for me.
To me, it's almost sencond nature to complete these stages by the end of Hydrocity and by the ene of Mushroom Hill. That second blue one sometimes gives me trouble but I can still knock it out the next attempt if I screw up.
As a 6 yr old it took me 3 yrs to beat 19:14...play sonic 3 & knuckles all the way through with all 7 chaos emeralds. In your save file keep revisiting mushroom hill turn the power button on and off on your sega win or lose so you can keep replaying in the secret cave.

The harder for me it's the 26:10 Special Stage.
That is the nastiest one, for sure, since it relies on properly reversing yourself.
I also can't get a perfect on the 155 sphere stage. I don't even try because it's way too risky to try to jump back into the lanes when you go for the rings (especially after it speeds up).
I can perfect the 71 sphere stage, though.
Nah, just complete to game, and keep starting Mushroom Hill on 3&K and keep reseting until you get it. That's what I did.

Knuckles in Sonic 1. I'm not sure exactly what to call it, since it doesn't let you play Sonic 1 as Knuckles; it just gives you the Orb Game.
How long did it take you to practice all those stages so that you could get a perfect in every special stage with rings as well as the chaos emerald for every stage? I have never considered trying to do both in many of the harder stages.
Finally! I got stuck in one of those. It took me around 15 tries to get the one around the 20 min mark 😂 but I did it! Thanks for the video
i really wish i could be able to do these, but what makes it almost impossible for me is the controls. i can't even begin to count how many times i clearly made a left (or right) turn but the game wants to pretend like it's opposite day

The only Super emerald I'm having trouble getting is the deep blue one, every other super emerald with some redos were somewhat easier that they were when I was 12

Quick Question, in Sonic 3 if you play the and knuckles version, AIR, or complete what happens if you go to hidden palace with only 1-6 emeralds
whatever emeralds you have when you enter hidden palace for the first time will get turned into super emeralds
id rather cut my legs off without anesthesia than play the super emerald special stages again

You seen in sonic 3 and knuckles you need to have all 7 chaos emeralds to get all 7 super emeralds if you have 4 chaos emeralds you can only get 4 super emeralds also you can only get the super emeralds from mushroom hill to death egg

As far as I remember, the Red Spheres are very much equivalent to the Goal Blocks in the Special Stages of Sonic 1.
If there are eight color palettes for chaos emeralds, why not up it to EIGHT emeralds? Sonic 1 had 6, Sonic 2 had seven, and Sonic 3 had *8*. Both the *orange* AND *yellow* emeralds fit in a similar slot, depending on whether you're playing Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles...
Either your emulator or your recording software drops every second frame so the flicker of the emeralds is static - are you set to 30 fps?

Knuckles gets all 7 emeralds and becomes Hyper Knuckles. Knuckles gets all 7 Super Emeralds and becomes... Hyper Knuckles. Bit of a cop-out

Actually the slower frame rate makes special stages easier than the Original and the many ports of this game
On the game cube mega collection when I used the joystick for these bonus levels some times the game reverses my inputs but now I use the D pad for them and it works wonders

What the heck is up with complaints on 19:14? That's one of the easiest ones for the super emeralds. It's literally just a straight line and you turn occasionally. No searching for where to go next, no spinning around at high speed to find 4-8 stupid spheres that don't want to be found etc. It's so straightforward I don't get it.

I love these special stages. Fun and 2nd easiest only to Sonic 1. Couldn’t stand the ones in Sonic 2 or Sonic CD.

What does the gold emerald do? (I know it unlocks hyper sonic but I don't know what hyper sonic is better than super sonic)
I don't know what just a gold emerald can do. But, if you get the 7 chaos emeralds you will become Super Sonic, and then the 7 super emeralds after that you will become hyper sonic, which is basically God mode. You flash all colors, can breathe underwater, and have a double jump that creates a flash that kills everything on screen. So yeah hyper sonic is much better than super sonic

You only need 7 to be the normal Super Sonic. The Super Emeralds are the next 7 stages that give the emeralds needed for Hyper Sonic.
You have to avoid all the special rings. That is the only way to keep super sonic around.
Christopher Zimmerman Actually, even if your emeralds became inactive (super emeralds in stone), you can still unlock Doomsday zone. That's, honestly, the most important. You can't transform into super sonic anymore though (except in Doomsday zone of course).
