Swami Sarvapriyananda (Pre-Monastic name Viswaroop) is a Hindu monk (sannyasi) belonging to the Ramakrishna Order. He is the current resident Swami and head of the Vedanta Society of New York, a position he has been serving since January 2017.
Early life and education
Swami Sarvapriyananda grew up in Bhubhaneshwar in the Indian state of Odisha. From childhood onwards, he was inclined towards spirituality and was inspired by the lives of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. His family was also devoutly religious. His parents and grandparents were initiated devotees in the Ramakrishna Order tradition. He has stated that his first goal in life was to become a pilot and the second was to find God, with the second goal later becoming his only goal. Sarvapriyandanda joined the Ramakrishna Order in 1994 and took his monastic vows in 2004. His family, at first, objected to his decision to become a monk but later accepted his decision. After passing school, he completed his Business Management degree from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar.
Life after Sannyasa
He served as an acharya or teacher at Monastic probationer training center, Belur Math. He also served the Ramakrishna Order by becoming the vice principal of Deoghar Vidyapith Higher Secondary School and becoming Principal of Shikshanamandira Education College, Belur Math
Swami Sarvapriyananda served as assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of Southern California in 2015. He was later appointed head of the Vedanta Society of New York, a position he has been serving since 6th January 2017. Swami Tathagathananda was his predecessor. He was a Nagral Fellow for the year 2019-20 at Harvard Divinity School.

The interpretations , of all these teachings especially in a different era today may feel different on an "intellectual" , "cultural" or "semantic" level . Only if I could "FEEL" ( or grab ?) the Oneness beyond all of this .!!! Thanks , Swamiji.

We can objectivize all evils, greed, hatred etc and get rid of it and experience love ,joy, happiness etc as consciousness
What he is teaching is easy very easy to be grasped even by a normal intelligence.any of you who have understood all this say honestly are you FREE AND BLISSFUL?
I am telling you all these teachings are nothing but play of MAYA.
Instead of inquiring WHO AM I? ASK SW. SARVPRIYANAND who is running my heart beat?? I want HIM, I have no interest in getting knowledge of who am I? I am not running my heart I know it who is running it? Who stops it? I want Him forget about what is I and what is this universe ,,he is encyclipaedia britanica, library on move, talks too much. Ask swami ji to stop his heart beat for 1 minute and then restart it,if he is unable to do it then he also must find THAT who is running this life-force, forget about Vedantic knowledge.

Hello folks, I'm wondering why both swami are wearing a face covering/mask if this was recorded back in 2017.
Thank you.
Sir,
Same old headlines
Consciousness is to be experienced not defined right?
Will Awareness still be “here” (here meaning wherever the person lived before death) after the body died and cremated?
What book is this?
This is certainly not a lecture from 2017 as Maharaj can be seen wearing mask (took it off before the speech). Has to be between 2020-2022.
It’s 7 days old
Endless dropping into bottomless pit seems like recursive refinement of the knowledge of self
This video is dated 2017. That was before the pandemic. Why the masks and such?
Non-duality Vedanta can't deny our individual existence, by saying everything is illusion. It is wrong conception. Our respective inherent consciousness constantly reminds us about our body, wealth, family, property and so on and we remain constantly worried about ways and means to acquire and to protect those, as deep into respective subconsciousness we know very well that nothing would remain in long run; dust to dust. According to Brhadaranyaka Upanishad, not for sake of wealth, family, property etc., those are dear to an individual, but for sake of his self those are dear to him. Hence, natural habit of clinging to own consciousness is one of the factors causing suffering and sorrow. But, there is no escape and that is Brahma knowledge, irrespective of what speaker says.
Sir you are misinterpreteting mind and consciousness. Body mind complex appears in consciousness. Not the consciousness you refer to which is just a sensory perception and experience. Here consciousness is refered to is the ultimate awareness.
@@akshay.chavan92 There is no need and time to give detail explanation to you. Be happy with whatever you believe.
Do you know what illusion actually means? :D Illusion doesn't mean that something doesn't exist, necessarily.
It means that one/many doesn't see what appears/or Is/exists AS IT IS, FOR WHAT IT IS. Always filtered by "rose colored glasses"/conditioning. Including the person-self.
Non-dual Vedanta doesn't and isn't trying to "deny" the "individual existence". Individual experience is fine, but existence.. hmm :)
@@sanjoyghose1952 "Be happy with whatever you believe."
Yes, let believers be believers. However, it doesn't look like a belief that Akshay in particular is articulating here, above.
And yes, the "useless eaters"/sleepwalkers and "believers" of this and that, fundamentalism, in all areas of life and not just for religious "fanatics", but the everyday person you meet is a chronic believer of illusion(s), too - and indeed they have the "right" to "believe what they want".
However, belief doesn't serve any good, truly.
Believe is not Knowingness, or Being.
Belief is a clinging, for the vast majority of people, so far.
And to you as well Sanjoy, namaste and be happy with whatever you believe, perceive and so on and so forth.
Om Namah Shivaya
@@JonasAnandaKristiansson Non-dual Vedanta refers to combination of at least 64 Upanishads. Please specify name of Upanishad your swamiji and yourself are refering, so that, we can have worthwhile discussion sloka by sloka. I hope you know Sanskrit well, so that we can have discussion on the probable interpretations of slokas. If you ask what illusion is, what can I say, except quoting Oxford dictionary. Be specific in your comments and do not write emotionally,as that will lead to nowhere.
Charbak Philosophy” says, four basic elements, soil, water, air and heat combine at certain time in certain proportions to create individual consciousness. They do not believe in 5th element, ether. After death, consciousness including embodiment goes back to those four elements and individual consciousness of the species, gets annihilated for ever. According to Charbak philosophers, who have been recognised in Gita as Demon, all preaching for brahma, resurrection, reincarnation etc., are nothing but creation of clever people to exploit laymen for sake of earning livlihood. Hence, truth is still a mystery and unknown, although people are dying since inception of creation..
If Charbak theory is correct, foundations of all religions will obviously come crushing down as all religions are based on hope for afterlife.
Non-duality Vedanta comprises of at least 64 Upanishads. Upanishads, that I have read, nowhere forced reader to accept it's theory. Just like Gita, where in chapter 18, Krishna left to discretion of Arjun to decide whether to fight or not. So far as I am concerned, it does not matter to me whether my consciousness would remain after death or not as I am not convinced that consciousness after death would be advantageous to me . Those who are worried, are basically cowards, as they are afraid to think of their total annihilation.
There were no masks in 2017

Logic want work
Advait is too confusing, when I hear to Swami, I understand the examples he gives, more and more I listen, I feel it's impossible to understand 'I' at this point of time, as it's purely philosophical and not at all practical.i mean very clearly they have said 'I' is what which can't be experienced and objectified . Even philosophy is something created , rationalised and understood by the mind/intellect, I mean it is objectified, then how can an objectified thing explain 'I'..Bhakti has so many answers and actual steps towards enlightenment. Advait says u are already enlightened/satchitanand. If u are already then who is speaking , talking, convincing?
I can understand what you feel. I am a Bhakth of my Krishna too. You are on the right track but also very important to keep contemplating. Only knowledge will one day reveal that which you are seeking. I don’t want to use big words like enlightenment , but let’s say Krishna was mythical to me before but real now. I close my eyes and there he is, playful and guiding me, answering my every question, in the admiration of him I am losing my lil individual self and that feels like the river dissolving in the ocean. River isn’t lost, it becomes the ocean. Once you understand water, you have understood both the ocean and the river. And it is all a perspective. It isn’t easy to understand another’s perspective and close to impossible to understand our own fully. What Advaitam tells you, is what YOU are trying to tell yourself. Have faith, contemplate on the simple things before trying to understand deeper things. Becoming a better version of ourselves everyday eventually gets us there. This is my experience and am learning, admiring and serving every minute I’m still here. Hari Om.
@@sharmilagovindaraju1458 I feel so blessed to hear from you, so happy that you replied, this too is my Lord's gift for me, who made u write such beautiful lines. ❤️❤️ Contemplation and surrender is the key, as you said my friend. I agree with you, that earlier He was mythological, but now real, to me as well. I don't see Him yet though, but Day and night I just see so many hints and episodes which my Lord only tries to show me, these happen in moments when I am engrossed in some worldly work and not thinking or not chanting of Him, something I notice/see/come across comes in front of me which immediately take me back to Him 😀. These moments of surprise are so uplifting. Despite all this, I feel at times it's very difficult to completely detach from worldly matters, lift yourself from vices like ego, anger, irritation etc. With practice perhaps all this cud be curtailed but just doesn't go away completely.
Is there any Vaiṣṇava Ācārya who would not say Advaita-vāda is detrimental to bhakti? The idea that we are no different from Kṛṣṇa is arguably why we fell into illusion. It wouldn't be reasonable to surrender to Kṛṣṇa if thinking everyone is the same. What is the motivation to follow Kṛṣṇa's instructions in Bhagavad-gītā 9.34, man-manā bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru, if you think you've already attained the Supreme? The Advaita conception implies the Supreme is overcome by illusion and forced to suffer, which is absurd. If Advaita-vāda were true, one person becoming self-realized should end the illusion for all, but it hasn't, because our individuality is real and is the basis of ānanda.
@@PaulHoward108 much appreciate your point 'if we all think we are Krishna then surrender would not happen'. However no true 'advaitin' (person who practices And teaches advait vedanta) denies the other paths of reaching enlightenment- be it bhakti, or Karma yoga..in fact they say all go hand in hand. In bhakti it's a great practice if we consider that all have Krishna in them, then surrender comes easy and the vices of self can be washed away. So if we go by this principle, even we ourselves have Krishna in us, that's what advait teaches. But the illusion they talk about is all the 'mala' (impurities) we have gathered over the years which need to be cleaned away to realise that we are Brahman or Krishna or the supreme self. This I believe is next to impossible for the masses, very rare ppl can overcome the impurities of mind and hence it's not possible to realise the self by masses through advait, I believe. As far as we are in this mortal outfit these vices keep coming back, with practice of course can be diminished but doesn't go away completely.
Your last statement is also a powerful argument, but again a truely realised advaitin can only aid in uplifting others towards enlightenment, but can't actually hand hold, even the supreme consciousness/Krishna Himself has not done that, coz to continue the cycle of life and death and 'maya' (illusion) is the only way life can exist, if all are realised all this would cease immediately, that would be against the will of Brahma( the creator)
@@sharmilagovindaraju1458 Sense pleasures are short lived..
That is absolute fact.
