- This is Part 1 of a series of lectures given by Swami Sarvapriyananda on the text, Vakya Vritti.
Vakya Vritti is a text of fifty-two Sanskrit slokas attributed to Adi Shankara and is in the form of a dialogue between an eager student and an enlightened teacher. The text concerns itself with the detailed and elaborate explanation of two Mahāvākyas - aham brahmāsmi and tat tvam asi which are intended to give a direct perception of Brahman.

Perhaps, a way to explain the issue with omniscience is that the enlightened may not perceive all of the universe at once, knowing every single detail at any moment, but has access to that knowledge whenever he chooses so. In that way it would make sense and solve the apparent contention.

Interesting discussion around 24:30 about the omniscience of Ishvara vis-a-vis a jivan mukta. As I understand the Upanishads, they reveal that the svarupa (real nature) of a jiva is identical to the svarupa of Ishvara. Since omniscience is the real nature of Ishvara it follows logically that a jivan mukta is omniscient in reality as well. However, it must also be noted that Mundaka 1.1.9 reveals that Ishvara is not only omniscient in reality (i.e., sarvajna) but omniscient in appearance (i.e., sarvavit) as well. In contrast, although a jivan mukta is omniscient in reality the same cannot be said about their appearance. So, while both Ishvara and a jivan mukta are sarvajna (all knowledge in reality), only Ishvara is sarvavit (all knowledge in appearance).
As further support for the argument above, we must note that if a jivan mukta (or any jiva) were nescient in reality then Ishvara would be rendered non-omniscient, which cannot be! This is because if a jiva is nescient in reality then the real omniscience of Ishvara ends when and where the real nescience of a jiva begins.
The question around 25:00 “Will a jivan mukta become all-knowing like (Upanishadic) God?” is logically sound only if we parse it as “Will a jivan mukta IN APPEARANCE become all-knowing like (Upanishadic) God IN APPEARANCE?”. I submit that, without relying on the Upanishads, a correct categorical answer to this re-framed question cannot be offered by any individual through their powers of perception and reasoning alone. Either a YES or a NO answer to the aforesaid question by an individual (sans Upanishadic wisdom) would render God an object of knowledge of the individual, thereby rendering God an insentient object (jada) which cannot be! Therefore, we must rely on the Upanishads to infer the NO answer to the aforesaid question.
Interestingly, the Upanishads imply that the answer to the question “Will a jivan mukta IN APPEARANCE remain small-knowing like God IN APPEARANCE?” is YES. The upshot is that God, per the Upanishads, is both all-knowing as well as small-knowing IN APPEARANCE. With the upadhi (apparent conditioning adjunct) of ishvaratvam (lordship), God is all-knowing while with the upadhi of jivatvam (individuality) God is small-knowing. An all-knowing God cannot be said to be all-knowing if God does not know what it is to be small-knowing!
