What is a Ford Drive Cycle? Does a Drive Cycle Always Work? In this upload, we examine what a (Ford) drive cycle is and its primary purpose in keeping your vehicle legally operating on public roads.
What do you do if a Drive Cycle does not work and is unsuccessful? I don't know, I'm asking you. Seriously. We are at an impasse with Ford, Ford Performance, Shelby American, the State of California, California Emissions Laws, and our local State Referee's Office on what to do regarding 3 of our 4 Ford Mustangs that WILL NOT pass a California Smog Emissions Test due to one or more OBDII sensors (drive cycle monitors) failing to activate or come "online." The common suggestion always circles back to completing a drive cycle, but in our situation, the drive cycles have only worked on one of our Mustangs.
Have you had an OEM stock vehicle that will not pass a California (or any other state) Smog Emissions Test due to OBDII sensors refusing to come online after one or more drive cycles? If so, please comment down below! I would like to find out if anyone else has experienced these similar drive cycle problems / Mustang drive cycle problems.

I just found this video because no matter what my car wont complete a driving cycle. I have been having this problem for almost two years and i still drive it and after getting caught a few times i’ve tried to hard to pass smog, i m looking for answers and came across this video you uploaded 2 years ago. Has anything changed? Thanks in advance
Thank you for checking out the video. No, nothing has changed. People have been kind enough to leave their experiences in the comments, however, there seems to be very few people who have overcome these issues once they begin down the rabbit hole of drive cycle hell. If anything changes that is significant, I will upload a follow-up video. Thank you for commenting, best wishes with your car.
I Have a 2016 GT350 which I purchased new in CA. I had to get the car smogged for the first time 02/2024. The car is stock, but did not pass the OBD2 cycle. I tried various drive cycles but still won't pass. Any updates or advice? Who to contact at Ford, Ford Performance or the smog gods. Thanks for any advice. Ron Hampton. I suspect a lot of GT350 will be coming due for smog checks as the 8 year grace period comes to an end.
I came across this video and read all the comments.
Im having the same problem on my 03 Roush stage 2.
Catalytic converters not ready.
Done many many cycles and nothing.
I think im just gona try having some fun and see if that works.
Good luck to me and all of you.
You have a really cool car! I’m sorry you can’t drive it “legally” on the street.
It appears this video has become a metaphorical “graveyard” where the weary, tired, and frail come to tell war stories of their Mustangs failing smog emissions tests.
If possible, please keep me updated with your progress! Thanks for checking out the video.
Damn quite a collection that's a lot of horsepower in that stable.!
Thank you! I am very grateful and proud of the collection my father and I have procured over the years. Thanks for checking out the video!
I have the same O2 sensor issue with my 2014 Ford Raptor. I bought the truck in Washington where they don't have emissions and brought it down to Arizona where emission checks are required. The truck had Kooks long-tube headers with non-EPA approved cats, so in order to pass emissions, I had to change them out to "green" EPA approved cats. Now the only thing holding me up from passing emissions is the O2 sensors are showing "Not Supported" on the ODBII reader. I thought the previous owner had installed a custom tune and disabled the O2 sensors, so I had a local Ford dealer reflash the PCM with factory stock settings. After driving more than 300 miles to complete the drive cycle, the O2 sensors are still not activated. Very frustrating!
Hi, Bill. I am sorry to hear about your situation. I would imagine Ford flashing the PCM with the factory stock program would reset and enable proper O2 sensor functionality (especially after completing a full drive cycle).
It appears we have much in common with O2 sensors on "green" catalytic convertors. We've had bad luck with vehicles passing smog with inactive or "non-supported" O2 sensors on exhaust manifolds with "green" cats.
Thank you for commenting and checking out the video. I'm frustrated for you. Let me know if you have a change in circumstances with your Raptor.
I've always loved the Raptor. Fine choice, sir!

Thanks for your comments. Since my posting on your video, I came across a video of another person who was experiencing the same issues with the O2 sensors, and coincidentally, he also lives in Arizona. In summary, he mentioned that the drive cycle will not complete when the outside temperature is very hot. He said the coolant temperature has to dip below a certain point before starting the drive cycle. With record high temperatures in Arizona this summer, he couldn't get the coolant temperature low enough even after leaving it overnight. His solution was to go to a cooler place (Prescott), which is typically 10-20 degrees cooler than Phoenix, and stay overnight to cool down the engine temp. It worked for him. He was able to complete the drive cycle and the OBD2 reading on his O2 sensors became "complete". I'm willing to give it a try. Will report back after the trial.
This information is very promising, and I am very grateful you found it and shared it. I never considered the temperature sensitivity variable when completing a drive cycle, and I am disappointed I have not heard anyone from Ford / Ford Performance recommend this as a prerequisite prior to completing a drive cycle. I attempted to complete the drive cycles in and around the San Fernando Valley, which experiences warm to hot weather on a frequent basis. This may explain why our '12 GT350 hasn't passed smog since 2015 (considering I'm attempting the drive cycle in warm / hot weather). I really appreciate you sharing this with me and anyone who may stumble upon this comment section. Thank you again, and please let me know what happens! I'm going to try your suggestion as well - let's compare notes!
Same here buddy. 2013GT. Battery died in winter storage and haven't been able to get the O2 monitors ready ever since. That was 3 years ago. Seems like Ford should update their software to a manageable drive cycle .
You put into words perfectly what I failed to communicate and accomplish in this upload. I am really sorry to hear about your situation. I empathize with you and feel terrible I have no solution to offer. In the comments section of this video, other people have kindly offered their suggestions, all of which I intend to try in the coming weeks / months. Please keep me updated on your situation, I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you for commenting and checking out the upload.
@@TrackingPonies Thanks. I'm going to tackle this in the spring if it kills me.
I made a thread on s197forum.com about it. Interesting responses with some good insight. www.s197forum.com/threads/2013-gt-o2-monitors-not-coming-on-will-a-dyno-tune-help.138494/#post-2493304
I am having this problem now and it's so frustrating. To make a long story short, I have a 2013 Mustang GT that I modified with a Kenne Bell Supercharger and I can't get the cat, O2, and heater monitors to activate.
I’m really sorry to hear about the problem you’re having with the monitors refusing to activate. It is incredibly frustrating, I feel your pain. There are some great suggestions in the comments you may want to try, but we still haven’t had any luck. Thanks for checking out the video.
I have a 2012 boss 302 and for the past 3 years since 2018 I have been having the front o2 sensor saying that there are not ready. I even replaced them and still the same problem. I too have tried the Ford drive cycle and can’t get them to turn on. Great video by the way.
I’m really sorry to hear about your situation. Three years is a long time. Congratulations on an amazing car, despite it not responding properly to a drive cycle.
Thank you for checking out the video, and I am truly disappointed I don’t have a remedy to offer you in the video. I’m in a similar situation, but about to try some possible solutions others have suggested in the comments section of this video. If I ever find a solution that works for people in our situation, I will let you know!
I’m going through the same issue right now with my 02 mustang. Catalyst and Evap won’t set. I only need cats to pass so I can least past smog 😞
I'm sorry to hear that, Jose. It's unfortunate how many people have these issues. I do appreciate you commenting and sharing your situation. Let me know if you find anything out or if anything changes.
I have a 99 Ford Expedition I have not be able to drive this car for over 6 years because of failing the drive cycle. Right now I have failed on CAT, PdDTC, 02S AND HRT, I have tried different attempts at it and have over 700 miles driving it with 2016 tags on it. Welcome to Smog Hell and the DMC (ca.) just smiling.
Oh wow, 6 years? This is a much bigger problem than I originally anticipated. After 700 miles, I would imagine plenty of drive cycles were completed during that time. I am sorry to hear this, and we are right there with you. If anything changes or you hear any good information about how to solve this, let me know! Thanks for stopping by.
I went a few months ago to get my 2000 mustang smoged and it said my secondary air system was not ready. The guy told me to drive it around a bit so it can be fixed but I did and it still showed that it was not ready. So how do I get the secondary air system to be ready?
Hi, Wilfredo. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting.
It appears the general consensus is to keep attempting the drive cycle a few more times to try and set the monitor to a "ready" or "complete" status. You stated you are driving it around, is the check engine light still on? I'm not an expert on anything, but even asking around regarding your specific situation, I've been advised to tell you to try the drive cycle at least two more times, and engage in a few more "cold start" cycles. I personally can't verify this, I'm just passing this information along to you.
If I hear anything else, I will update you! Good luck, keep me posted!
@@TrackingPonies no the check engine is not on everything is fine the only thing is that the monitor says it’s not ready I asked a mechanic and he said to just drive around and cold start it every morning until it shows up as ready.
Ive never struggled passing smog in my 2015 mustang gt in Illinois, I’ve literally cleared codes right before going to the testing facility and by the time i get there they were ready, they even passed my car with a p0420 code that means the cats aren’t working right
I wish myself and others had this kind of luck! Thank you for sharing this information. Congratulations on passing smog in Illinois!
What cycle did you do? I’m having issues after a battery went too low and reset all monitors I looked up the ford one and it’s insanely precise
me too until this year.. what the hell happened? now its different.. did they hack out cars?
Living this nightmare in California with my 2012 gt. The monitors won't comeback online after a cat replacement on bank 2 back in December 2022. I've done drve cycle after drive cycle.
It is absolutely a nightmare, you have described the situation properly. I find it interesting your specific issue started after an OEM or similar cat replacement. In theory, there should be no reason why the monitors do not come back online, everything else held constant. At most, one or two drive cycles should have resolved the issue.
Thank you for sharing your experience, and please keep us updated if anything changes or you learn anything new. Thanks for checking out the video.
Just bought a 2011 GT. Same issue. Driven several drive cycles. Cannot get the FUEL, CAT, O2 and HTR monitors to set. Strange thing is... PREVIOUSLY, all monitors set except the EVAP... I replaced the fuel filler neck and purge canister because I was getting an Evap leak code... code is gone, EVAP set FIRST but. Is the others won’t set!!!
I am sorry to hear about your situation with the '11 GT. However, congratulations on your new car!
Great observation solving the EVAP monitor failure. 1 of 4 solved. Statistically, I have noticed just in the comments for this video, most people are reporting monitor issues with an S197 5.0. Also, most everyone is experiencing an O2 monitor failure. There have been many great suggestions to bring monitors active and online left in the comments of this video I intend to try in the coming weeks. We are experiencing the same monitor failures as you are with your '11 GT, so if I stumble upon any remedies, I will let you know! Drive cycles have yielded no successful results for us as well.
Thanks for commenting and checking out the video.
*UPDATE* After completing several drive cycles, starting while the vehicle was cold, driving the recommended speed and duration, trying EVERYTHING, nothing worked.... so, I decided to just have some fun and ripped on the car for a few minutes. Got it up to 80mph a few times, did some hard pulls, almost to redline. Parked it. Next time I started her up, ALL MONITORS WERE SET!!!! I guess she just needed some tough love!
@@RambunctiousPictures I have a 2011 Mustang GT and have exactly the same monitors not ready- O2, O2 heater, Cat, and Fuel. Can you please share how many drive cycles you did before doing these hard pulls?
@@dewdrops515 apparently there’s very specific Ford driving pattern and order that you have to do in order to get all the monitors to set. Some are temperature specific, engine temp specific and others are based on time. I’d say look that up, do it as close as possible and then let ‘er rip if they still don’t set!!!!
Hello this is Quinton you have to detune the fuel pressure then your monitors will set with no problem full has to have a fuel pressure and that's why the monitors won't set
Can you explain in detail what you mean by this? I appreciate the help.
Thank you so much for the comment! Welcome to UA-cam!!!
Have a 2014 GT and I have passed once before.. i don’t drive it as a daily anymore because I work as a field tech and work out of a truck. I obviously neglected it too long and her battery died.. this clears your readiness monitors… took it out for the first time yesterday and I cannot get the damn monitors to come back on O2S, HTR, and CAT.. anyone with advice please let me know tried the drive cycle my fuel was over 3/4 it may have affected it but seems a bit mad to be that’s particular… please advise if you all know what I can do for these 3 readiness monitors so I can finally get it back on the road … driving my truck I can’t even go through a drive through with it bc the crane so I’d love to have my mustang back
Hey, Ozz. I am really sorry to hear about your situation. You landed on this video where everyone's dreams of their Mustang passing smog go to die, apparently.
If you have a moment, read some of the comments in the comments section. There are some useful tips and helpful advice offered by others with the same problem or stuck in a similar situation. If I hear anything new, I will update you. Thanks for stopping by and grieving with us.
I’m going through it now my car hasn’t pass the emissions for 2 months and I don’t know want to do! The guy at the emissions told me it was the computer of the car so idk if that’s why it doesn’t pass ?
Hulk, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am frustrated for you. I've been told the same thing, along with several other "possible" reasons. The most recent explanation we heard from the local emissions shop owner is the O2 sensors were "malfunctioning," yet, every professional car mechanic, computer tuner, exhaust expert, and diagnostic tool we've consulted and used say otherwise. I have no idea what to recommend for your situation, as we have tried many possible solutions with no luck. Please let me know if anything changes. I'm sorry you're going through this.
I have a 1998 Ford Ranger and put a new battery in it two months ago. It failed smog because of the OBS2 test, everything else passed. I called Ford customer service, yeah the actual company, and they spent 15 minutes trying to find the 'drive cycle' and they could not find it. Their best advice was to call a dealer. I called a dealer and talked to service, that guy told me a general Ford drive cycle he does of 20 minutes on the freeway of various speed, get off the freeway and travel 10 miles through town back to his house. He said he does this loop twice to get his Fords to pass. I tried it and it worked. The vehicle computer is looking for highway and city driving, going through the gears, stopping, starting, idling and who knows what else. Why though would the manufacturer not have this on a sheet somewhere for each vehicle.
Thank you for this helpful information. It does not make sense at all Ford would not have the drive cycle information or literature for everyone of their vehicles. Thank you again for providing information on your Ford drive cycle procedure for the Ranger.
I just got a 2017 GT350 and I’m facing the same issues!! Monitors not ready. I’ve had the car 2 weeks very frustrating
Thank you for taking the time to check out the video. I’m really sorry to hear about your situation, and definitely share in your frustration. I feel useless that I can’t offer you advice or a solution, because we can’t figure out the problem for ourselves either. All drive cycles result in failure (monitors not ready).
Congratulations on getting a GT350, despite the issues with the monitors.
Got the car tuned by PBD and was able to pass Emissions!!!!!
Thank you for keeping me in the loop! Congratulations, what a relief you must be feeling! I’m really glad PBD solved your smog emissions issue. I’m wondering now if my emissions issue in the ‘12 GT350 is in the Whipple tune, and not a faulty piece of hardware. Thank you again for sharing the great news!
@@TrackingPonies man I felt like crying!!! It was surreal. I am glad absolutely loving it and finally enjoying my GT350. Yea it may just be that give it a shot and see.
Tears of joy. What could be better than getting your GT350 legally on the road and enjoying it. Please keep me updated with your experiences in your GT350!
I haven't been able to get more than 3 monitors ready on my 2014 v6 mustang since I got it over a year ago. Got the stock cats and shorty headers. Any help you guys can give me? I'm losing my mind.

@@JonFenoMBeaTZ for real! I tried everything, stock headers with cats, bought like 8 o2 sensors, drove prob almost 3.000 miles just for driving cycles, i m literally desperate too
@Guilherme De Oliveira did you ever get this figured out? I'm still clueless
My evap system won't ready up everything else is ready but I already drove 457miles
After 457 miles, I would think all monitors/
sensors would be ready and on stand-by. Weird. I appreciate you sharing your experience, and thanks for checking out the video!
13 boss 302, same shit, 1st smog needed since purchase in 18. I've done multiple drive cycles, bout to take a road trip hoping that may help. 4 sensors won't clear: fuel, o2, egr, and cat. Clicked this vid for help, damn. Encouraging though that your 12 boss eventually passed. Cali auto laws and regulations are pure crap, like alot of our laws and regulations. Sweet rides bud 👍
I'm not understanding why the multiple drive cycles you've completed aren't activating/completing the OBDII monitors/sensors and clearing the readiness code. It's happening to a lot of people.
I feel terrible I don't have a solution for you or anyone else, and I regret making this video because I think it misleads people to think I have a solution(s) to offer. The only reason why I haven't deleted this video is subscribers and visitors have left helpful comments in the Channel Comments Section, which will hopefully provide some help and offer possible solutions to our mutual emissions issues and problems.
Please keep me informed on what happens after your road trip. Thank you very much for the kind words and taking the time to check out the video.
@@TrackingPonies oddly enough, it appears my Corsa axelback was the culprit 🤔
Seems the drive cycle "exact40mpg for 4minutes, then revving 2nd gear to 4800rpm" has worked for many modded and tuned guys. My boss is stock besides the Corsas, I heard a guy covered his exhaust (pass side only, and put steel wool in o2 sensors) long tubes as well..... passed. So it led me to believe the Corsas may be flowing too well, thus not heating sensors enough to trigger, even though they are upstream. Swapped back to stock boss mufflers and the sensors triggered after about 20-30 miles! All OBDII green and passed. I removed 2 of 3 hangers on the stocks and shortened the Corsas for easy swap, since I may have to do this crap every 2 years. It still makes little sense to me.
Now my damned fuel inlet is faulting again and triggering CEL for EVAP leak. Another shitshow problem from Ford. (Internet fix is ram the fuel funnel a million times in and out with some WD, apparently works for about a year cuz I had to do it last year, lol)
And I thought installing the MGW shortshifter would solve all my 6sp S197 Mustang issues 😂
Total BS when we pay top dollar for numbered, rare Fords, and they won't even pass emissions. Not just Cali either, Stang owners across the country (tho mostly modded) all struggling with this nonsense

Dude! My 2011 Mustang Gt won't complete it 02 and Heater monitor, No codes at all, it just won't complete and I've driven the crap out of it!
I am sorry to hear that, and DEFINITELY understand your frustration. Ford, Ford Performance, expert mechanics, engine tuners, and service technicians have no idea what to suggest to the problems you and I are experiencing. All anyone ever suggests is to complete another drive cycle. We have no hardware malfunctions or OBDII error codes registering on our scanner tooIs. We love our Fords and Mustangs, but we are incredibly disappointed with how Ford and affiliates have not offered any solutions, or even have any idea what is causing the cars to not pass smog.
If I hear anything new or discover any solutions, I will update you and release an updated video on how to solve these problems! Thank you for sharing and checking out the video.
@@TrackingPonies thanks man!
@@TrackingPonies Hey man so I was able to pass emissions! Do any of those mustangs have aftermarket exhaust that are larger than stock? I put my stock H-pipe back on and it passed. Turns out these cars actually look for back pressure and volume.
@@batistamedia2139 Harry, I am sorry I am just now seeing this message. UA-cam doesn't notify when there is a sub-response to a primary response. Congratulations on passing smog emissions! Reinstalling stock exhaust components does make sense regarding proper back pressure detection to pass the test.
You pose a great question. Our '19 R is 100% OEM stock, and the '12 R has a Borla cat-back exhaust system. The '12 R used to pass smog, then around 2015, it randomly decided it would not pass smog emissions testing anymore. The 17' GT350 we sold never passed smog due to the "green cats" on the Kooks Green Catted Competition Exhaust System. The '12 BOSS 302 is a dedicated catless headers track car, so it disregards smog emissions testing completely.
Found out what it was. Had an aftermarket xpipe that wasn't tuned for. I put the stock hpipe back on and boom pass emissions immediately
