- How to replace the power steering box in an early Pontiac Firebird or Chevy Camaro in our Muscle Car Build Project. This same power steering box can be found in a ton of General Motors cars and trucks such at the Chevy Nova, Chevy Chevelle, Chevy Pick Up Truck, Pontiac GTO, Pontiac Le Mans, and more!
This job takes about 30 minutes if you have all the tools you need, mostly just hand tools except for the pitman arm puller which you can rent for FREE from your local auto parts store.
This thing is HEAVY, so have a friend on hand to help you get it out of the muscle car, once out you will have to rebuild it or replace it.

Enjoyed, great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for this video man! Gonna do this to a 79 camaro this week!
Glad I could help, should be really close to mine! Good luck on the job.
I lost my steering on my 74 el camino. I thought it was the power steering pump that went out. Turned out to be the steering box instead, i can see fresh oil coming from the battom of the pitman arm area. Now i have to get this done soon.
Old video thats new to me. Good stuff man !! I had a red 67' Bird years back and recently inherited a 1970 Nova.. Basically the same gearbox swap. The Nova came with a manual box and was switched to power. Its a functoinal but debatable setup. Im pulling engine asap and when I do Im gonna install a new manual gearbox again. 1 less belt running and in the way.
Great video. My box is leaking so I’m thinking of pulling it off as well. Just need figure out best options for a New one
Great video. I was thinking i had to pull the header to get the box out from the bottom. Now i know I don't have to go that route. I'll go with a close ratio box.
Glad I could help
I’ve been watching your videos on this build. You’ve done a great job with this car! I’ve learned some good stuff here. Keep up,the good work! 👍🏻
Awesome, thank you so much!!
Thanks for sharing your expertise Brother.
Hope it helps Marty!
Buen video gracias
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it, and it helped you out.
Like number 383. Awesome rebuild. New subscriber from Arkansas. I may not comment everytime but I always leave a like 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the sub! I did some partying in Little Rock back in the day lol fun times for sure... just don't tell the misses lol JK lol
I put a CP 500 steering box in my 67 Camaro. Fit like a charm. They are 360 bucks on summitt. FYI.
Thats not a bad idea Chris!!!!!! I called a few junk yards and they wanted $150 for a pull a part box... HUMMMMM... thanks for watching and giving me a great idea!!
Can you just take out the 1 bolt that holds the splined end of gearbox and not take out the ones for the ragjoint?
That I know how to do I needed to know how to reseal it ,.the big nut on the top end won't come loose .
Gotta bang on it, or heat it up.
I would go ahead and just swap to a quick ratio box(Lares 1353).
I might just pick up the 1353,thanks for the tip!
Hi, take this from someone who has been working on F bodies for 35 years. Put that box in the trash and just get a remanufactured quick ratio from National Parts Depot. Rebuilding a steering box is not for the faint of heart.
Lol that’s what I did, new unit and ready to go thanks for sharing your wisdom with us! Appreciate it!!!
If there is a lot of play in the steering could it also be a worn-out steering box, I have a 68 Camaro where I'm looking into replacing a steering box, my guess is I wore the steering box out moving it on tow trucks when it was broke down
Yep, we had to just replace the whole unit in the Firebird with a reman. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. Appreciate it!
I would say build it, however, I'm really concerned on the needle bearings
I am going to tear into this box but be ready to just buy another for sure! Thanks for watching and the suggestion on the needle bearings.
How did you get that 35 nut off ? I think I missed that part
Used an adjustable wrench, a big one!!
@@ArrowheadGarage thanks got it
How much did you end up paying for a reman one? Do you have the brand and part number please?
I paid about $175.00 picked it up from Car Quest. These boxes are just about all the same, just look up your year and model and. you should be golden! Thanks for watching
Do you install the same way you remove?
Sure did, install is just reverse of removing it. Thanks for watching.
@@ArrowheadGarage thanks for responding
@@ArrowheadGarage i had another question. Ive been having oil pressure issues and did some research online. There is a hidden oil galley plug behind
the plug of the rear of the motor. So i took out my motor and put the oil galley screw in and got good pressure. Do i need to put plug in the access hole again or can i leave it without the plug?
Do you know the serial# for the small oil filter?
On which engine?
67 firebird.
@@ArrowheadGarage 67 firebird.
I have never seen a seized up gear box. That thing is a hot mess.
It must have had water/snow/ice get thru the bearing fitted hoses, when I took it apart to rebuild, couldn't even get it to full disassemble. lol tring to get car on the trailer and then how the hell I was going to get it off was at least a six pack of Coors Light. lol
Do what the rest of us would do. Just replace it.
Tore into it this weekend and its rusted thru :( Off to buy a new one!
Video on replacement?
get a new one
By the way that HUGE nut is a 34 for me. I had to buy 3 sockets and return the others
Great Vid! I'm going to replace the input shaft seal on my 69 Camaro, so this will help. @lonzgarage is my youtube channel.
