89 sounds so fine. The dead in Wisconsin is always a sure bet. I miss Alpine.
alpine shows always had a magic to them. it might be that overhead lattice of timber that reflects their energy so well there. plus the tilt of the stage is dizzy and if u ever go there u can almost feel the imprint the dead left there
These were GOOD TIMES.I MISS THE SHOWS
My run was Spectrum 86 to RFK 95. Around 100 shows, 26 JGB shows, 2 Garcia/Grisman shows. People say "Wow, that's a lot of Jerry! You were lucky" I say, yes, I was insanely lucky. But enough of the Grateful Dead is never enough. Thank you Jerry
"Too much of everything is just enough"
That's a good run to have. My favorite years is around 1990
thats a nice run. for me it's Foxboro 90 to Deer Creek 95, 53 shows, 5 Jerry band shows. "too much of everything is just enough"
@monopolymike1 oh my, that eventually became one of my mottos. Then I changed to "...still not enough". I didn't just burn my candle at both ends, I threw it in the fire along with a white phosphorus artillery round and nearly expired in 100 ways countless times. If I had a time machine and caught every single show, I'd still want to double it and still go back for the top 500, plus JG in all projects plus whatever else besides risking the time-continuum by rescuing Jerry, but give him 3-5 years on an Island to let the crowding subside for a bit. Then more of "too much".
Let us not forget Voodoonola2 THANK YOU
They helped make me the wreck I am today, what great memories
William Munny Amen truth
LOL! I hear ya! But I’m listening to an awesome “Bird Song” right now. “S Begonias” sounded good too! O the Memories! They were a part of my life, a perfect solution in 80’s disco. Three hours of great music kept the Gibbs away! They just eased into “Fire” , gotta go, I’m missing too much of the show.
@@jimiamfirshur4778 Aaaooh, I like the Bee Gees. Fallon/TImberlake do a great impression, too. Granted, there is nothing like The Grateful Dead/shows, nor will there ever be again. I'm waiting, for Marty McFly, now, to take me back scuba diving with Jerry.
Saturday morning cartoons did it for me. It took me years to get over no more Saturday morning cartoons.
nobody cares
Was at this show...amazing to flash back to it over 30 years later!
I knew I should have skipped class and gone to this show! It's great to be able to see it now, though!! : )
This is amazing. "Heart of gold band " at its finest !
Absolutely loving this Brent part in They Love each other. He was fabulous.
Yup, Brent was right in the pocket!
Check out the band before Brent. It didn't suck.
Voo Voo we love you thanks buddy!!!! I miss Jerry
I was just there for a Milwaukee Wave game the other night and was dumbfounded that I actually saw a weekend of Dead shows in that tiny place. I guess officially it can seat 12,700 people but it sure seems smaller than that.
Ha, go wave and I do remember how crowded and how impossible it was to cross the streets to get to the mecca those 2 days. Never again did they come back to this venue.
Love from the 414
I listen to this video every night. . By the time the Dead get about half way through Birdsong, I'm passed out. .
My 21st Birthday Show and they played Mama Tried! Incredible memory. Brent Rocks!
Apparently Mama succeeded, cause you were born :)
Hey Jason Crowell my name is Chris Crowell haha. Cool. Just wanted to say hi and glad they played great tunes on your 21st bday. Love Brent too.
GD Birthday shows were awesome! 🎉
Jerry's voice is in really good shape here..... why? Listen to him in Stella Blue
the grateful dead saved my life again today
They had a message, there is grace in everything, even if it's not perfect
both shows were great. the memory I'll remember most is how 10 cops and 5 emts wasn't able to catch 1 guy to high on something at the hotel we were staying at.
Really very beautiful. The second is like epitome standard early 90's solid set list and yet listen for all the mirrors in it- the ashes and blue light and especially the love. Peace
Wow! That Lil Rooster tho! Never thought I'd say that
Wow. Im really just a few months removed from getting into this band (voodoo obviously a big help), but this one seemed pretty good. Loved the fake where the crowd seemed to want fade away, then busted into lovelight. Bobs mic seemed to be turned up a bit too much, lost the low end in the mix whenever he sang. Doesn't matter, that bird song was amazing. Formed a habit of watching these shows in their entirety lately to try and experience it- i was 1 year and 3 months old on the day of this show. The music lives on... see y'all at alpine with. bob and mr mayer
Welcome to the best band in the galaxy. Check out the archive, if you haven't already...archive.org/details/GratefulDead
Thanks, i'd heard people refer to the archive but hadn't checked it out yet...thanks for the link!
Welcome! Enjoy. Lots on UA-cam and of course archive.org
Are you beginning to tap in. . .
Shined My light añd have a visitor çoming later to my cabin gotta luv that light
The Dead return to the Arena after being roughed up there along with the audience by the Milwaukee Gestapo in 1980.(lots of arrests for drugs and cops milling around back stage). 1989 brought a new police chief, a new mayor and his wife who were heads.(John Norquist and Susan Mudd). They sat in the 4th row both nights. The cops stood back, no doubt due to the mayor. A mellow scene at one of the smaller venues they would play at in '89
My first show. The whole fucking city was full of freaks! Loved it. Hooked for life!
Nice and clear people. Nice and pure. 👌 Don't Overdose people
another awesome one! thanks so much for posting these, man so good to relive the good ol GD from my gool ol college years! Only at TLEO so far, and Brent solo -- get the F down! Love that stuff ...sadly this is an yet another excellent example of why i just could not take Vince (sorry buddy)
Thanks Voo

I was on my way back to Illinois from a church retreat and I heard the boys were playin at this venue, so I figured I'd cut through Milwaukee. Wound up in this little mesinine just above and to the right of Jerry, looking down. Interesting place, right in the middle of town. I remember I was very depressed over a recent divorce, and this was the one time (seeing MANY Dead shows) that the boys couldn't bring me outta my funk. But as I re-listen/watch this video I can see why. They don't really appear to be into it. They must have been depressed too... :-). Luckily there were more shows to come (and a much better wife!!)
scalemiester ..TRUE LOVE SUX, does it not??!! At least your back on top,..or the bottom,...which ever floats the sails.

Great sounds like you saw the light and were healing....amen! His job was to shed light, not to master. Blessings!
Mr. Nola. Hadn't heard this yet. Sound is very good. Great show. Thanks
thanks for sharing
I did the whole Spring Tour 1989, I was here. and in Louisville, Michigan, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, 3 rivers. Atlanta, Greensboro N.C [Moondancer]
Nice! ❤ I got in to every GD show in 1989! All 73 of them. My 2nd year in a row with perfect attendance. ❤
Jerry once said that there was a little bit of "Dark Star" in every song that the Dead performed. Well, that is so true of "Bird Song". A very spacey version here + a very nice one in deed.
Wow! Thanks!
Hell on a bucket is one way to go down the road and into the lovely scarlet who just always seems to have that match to bring on the fire on the mountain until it just feels like snow and then it feels like a box of rain so you might as well start trucking to the last train to Jacksonville where birtha awaits you this time forever because she belongs to you and you've both been down this road before . She said men are smart but women are smarter so walk with me in the sunshine and let me sing the blues away and mama tried to warn you about how it takes a whole lotta loving if you want that deal to go down and get satisfaction and not feel like a stranger in the promised land or fade away like uncle Charlie or masons children god knows mama tried . I taught u to never trust a stranger unless u meet him in New Orleans positively on forth street playing with the band while me and bobby mgee wake up little Susie and wave that flag and you sing me back home and lay me down and say good night til the morning comes
freak
Jeff Beada Yeah, but creative freak. RIGHT ON!
cool
Bobby playin' slide lead on red rooster...Jerry blowin it all away
Great show. Stagger Lee and an awesome pair of Bob songs in the first set. Great Scarlet/Fire second set. Truckin awesome version too!
Thanks for another pro shot V. The boys at one of their musical peaks. During this time a friend of mine and I used to tell others, "don't go by the set list, it may look average but give it a listen, it will amaze you."
Outstanding! Bravo. The quality here is astonishing. My ears hurt & I'm at about 60% volume. Can't praise or thank enough.
True. Quality is super, the band's in tune.. haven't heard a better GD concert.
Awesome Quality...............Thanks
Brett's pure fire in Red Rooster. Love the solo round robin in that song 😎
I remember this. For me, the scene was quite shady. I was pretty shady, too, so it's all good.
I think we all were shady. Remember the road construction in Milwaukee during these shows making it hard to get to the venues? Bless brother
Shady is as shady does. I guess. Great show.
I was at this one. Fun show!!
16 Thumbs down. ? Boo on all you people 🤔🤔🤔
Back when Bobby shaved and trimmed his eyebrows
great shots of jerry's playing! thank you!
who in the world would give this a thumbs down?
agree on his voice. Sounding good sounding good. Besides of course the beautiful hay days.
Love this version of his voice as well.
outstanding show! thanks voo!
I shall say! You have made many bad days better!
Thank you!
Man you did such a great job with this. Sounds great looks great and an awesome set list
Sound is great on this one. Very clear. Thanks for sharing!
I just wish I could remember most of it.
I remember this one very well, the Scarlet>Fire in particular. The previous night's Morning Dew was also tremendous. Ahhhhh .... midwest shows. Good stuff, thanks for posting this!!
My first show, 'twas great!
nastero13 my 1st show too. im from milwaukee
@@toddyoung4138I’m not from Milwaukee but it was my 286th GD show. ❤
Besides the 90' European tour minus Sweden shows, the best seats I've ever had were front row in front of Jerry, and 2nd row in front of Phil. . I listen to the Dead every day
I listen to The Dead everyday. Everyday night and most mornings. This is the first time I heard this one. Just starting SB. Hope you are well. -S
Funny how when you here the 1st couple notes while their warming up and you know for sure what it is.......Great stuff !!!!!
Been enjoying their ride for years now, since a high school friend turned me on to how really GREAT they are live, in 1978. when I was a lead singer in a rock band doing Stones, Deep Purple, Lou Reed, Black Sabbath, Led Zep and Bowie covers, etc...and THIS RIDE will NEVER STOP.....now I am 59.....and still, I LOVE this band as much as I did back then.....I listen to them every day still but I hardly EVER listen to the Stones or Black Sabbath any more ( just bores me now)....but still listen to Bowie, DP, Lou, Zep...........but I NEVER tire of these guys....We never did any GD covers, because the 2 guitar players, and the drummer "didn't like" the band.....oh well, you can lead a horse to water but.....you know...I AM SO GRATEFUL to be able to have seen them play 3 times in my life , all with Brent singing and playing the keys , WOW...WOW...WOW....Then I saw Ratdog paly ..1 time, and was disappointed...not the same at all with no Jerry and no Brent......
U were a singer in a rnr band in ninth grade sure u were
#TodayInGratefulDeadHistory!
Milwookie brings out the best in all bands that love to jam, WSP included at The Riverside Theater but The Mecca was very exclusive even though it was where the NBA Bucks used to play back then=Though it was listed on an architecture reclamation website under "gym floor," Andy Gorzalski recognized the pallets of panels as one of the largest pieces of pop art ever created. Growing up in Wisconsin, he had watched the Milwaukee Bucks win many games on that colorful floor, which featured a controversial design created by the artist Robert Indiana was unique= that's why this show is so great, they could feel the energy as could the crowd who were fortunate to be on the floor
Absolutely correct with your story and the aura the big O and Kareem gave that building did rub off on these dead shows here.
The Pittsburgh shows at the old Igloo(Civic Arena) 2 weeks earlier were nuts.. Tons and tons of energy outside the venue. Police in riot gear were called to restore order..A door opened in the arena from the inside then a few 100 people rushed in without Tix's. The 2 shows that week were great as usual. There was something about Pittsburgh when the Dead played there..
if i recall correctly ,2 shows in rosemont, then 2 n milwaukee..the mecca was so intimate,my favorite venue n this show ranks quite high absolute killer mama tried/mexacali
at least we enjoyed the ride ;)
the Music and Aliens Never Stopped. Playing
This tour had a VIBE, more so than Spring 90, which has its own box set. (Spring 89 would need Green Pyramids on the cover. ;0) Saw the Cincinnati, Louisville, 3 Chicago, and these shows. The most fun I ever had? There wasn't a bad seat in this little house. They should have played Stagger Lee every night. Sweet chunky Scarlet Fire. Rowdy cowboy tunes. I can still SEE the t-shirts I bought in the parking lot. One had a twister montage of Dead symbols on the front. The back said "Maybe you had too much too fast." O the N2O. Had a first-gen cassette I wore out. (Had 1,000+ hours on cassette. I miss them. Digital collections aren't as fun.) Widely circulated, this show had a quasi sacred status in the Milwaukee - Cudahy area. At how many parties did I hear it? On how many road trips did it enjoy Front Seat status? Hear the previous night. There are shows on this run that look perfectly harmless on paper (Cincinnati) but proceed to melt your ears. Hear the Shakedown from the first night in Chicago!
Agree 100% about the Spring 89 vibe. I saw the first 4 in Atlanta & Greensboro - everybody was taken with how energetic Jerry was. That first night, he was bopping around on stage like a youngster. Check out Jerry's vocals in Fire on the Mountain from that first night - he is literally announcing to all of us that he is feeling 10 feet tall and ready to tear it up!
In `89, the Mecca was probably the smallest venue you could see the Dead in, outside the Bay Area. Spring '89 was a good time!
This whole year was magical
Yupppp! Awesome tour. Awesome year. I got in to every GD show in 1989. All 73 of them. ❤
@@christheghostwriteroh yes!! Every night!!❤
And it was my 2nd year in a row with perfect GD attendance.
I got in to all 81 shows in 1988 and all 73 shows in 1989. ❤
Thanks for all this effort...you are keeping people "sane"
Looks like jerry's playing tiger sweet
Thanks for the music
Jerry's Voice is awesome at this one!
BRENT⚡⚡
small venue. 9000 plus I recall. great sound and crowd vibes ..
Great crowd, giving it right back.
Thank you voodoonola2 ! Sounds great& good video too!
Anyone know what the deal was with Brent. I was at the show and he was on FIRE. Was it the custody issue?
No he died by choking on his own vomit in his sleep. He is very much missed one of the best keyboardist of all time.
That has nothing to do with this video. Yes he did on 7/26/90 for reasons you cited attributed to type of speedball overdose that we are not privy too, but it doesn't really matter.
Great keyboardist.
These Mecca shows were wonderful. I was at both. Brent was really playing great as was the whole band during this period.
Brent was energy.
I agree he is electrifying on this video. He is leading the band sometimes. Unreal.
We want Phil!!! =)
One my Birthday shows. Sadly didn't get see this at the time.
My mistake. . J-Man would have been 75 and not 73
Thank you Jerry, thank you boys
sprig tour 89 was epic .
I was there! On my ipod playlist :)
Voodoo...you're awesome!
😃☘🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻☘😛
Thanks for the Show Sweets! Outstanding ~:]
This was my first show! I didn't even know the name of all the songs yet. I was so completely amazed by the opener, I remember thinking when it finished "Oh My God, that was only one song?!?!?!" Like, in my mind, that intro had contained an entire concert, and the lights were going to come up.
It was my first show, too! :fist bump:
😂that’s awesome! A concert in an opening sung. I hear you man!!
I’ve tried to leave many shows at intermission, thinking the show has to be over, bc it was so awesome there couldn’t possibly be any nite fur then to play. 🤷🏽Thankfully my gf would stop me from leaving. 🤦🏽
@@spidergawd68nice1st!❤
It was my 286th. ❤
This show has a good set list but it wasn't played as good a week before in Louisville.
They're all different. The Mecca had great energy. I stayed on the same private floor at the Hyatt as the road crew. It was a blast. They were "on" in Milwaukee. Louisville was great too. Judging by set lists doesn't tell the whole story. Been at some I thought wow! But didn't put up the goods, and yearned for some I saw on paper,....some lived up to it on tape and others didn't. I am sure you know this. Enjoy!
You speak the truth Bernstein. It is weird to hear a bunch of shows I saw in the 1980's and how good the dead sounded.
Holy doppleganger Batman, I sure thought that thumbnail was Bill Gates for a second there....
I have loved Jerry still after all these years but stopped in 1988 because big Steve parish who thought he owned Jerry told me to stay away from him plus he said he wouldn’t let me in anymore but he had no control over me because I was friends with all of the band members !
But I did stop going because I was getting tired of trying to b with Jerry more than I was but he was so into his heroin that nothing could make him give it up not even his daughters or his wives ! I was sick of drug addicts so I stopped going !
@@bunnybeckman8029get help
this was a great week for the young heads such as my that couldn't travel far, 3 shows in Chicago (Rosemount Horizon) 2 shows in Milwaukee!!
I attended every GD show in 1989. All 73 of them. Wiiiiild year. ❤
Sorry all. . It was Bobby's B-day
Jason Horne actually his half birthday.
Full timestamps please? Come on
Hur Hur i was there
I was there!
Good show. Thanks Voodoonola😛
Yes!!!
Jerry would have been 73 today. . RIP J-Man
Amazing Stagger Lee.
👋
48:35 Second Set
This was the first night. I hope somebody has the second night. I was there for both. I don't know if The Mecca is still there or if it has been torn down. Both shows were great. Don't know what else to say but thanks for posting this show and bringing back some great memories. My only question is how the Hell did somebody manage to video tape this? The band had a strict no video taping policy. Oh, well, maybe it's better if I don't question such things, and just enjoy the show, right?
A birthday show for me. Sadly, I was a poor college student when this happened. i was working multiple jobs to save money for an upcoming academic year abroad in Austria.
I did get to see about a 1/2 dozen shows at Alpine valley in the mid 80s through. There was good Terrapin at my 1st show...
This was my 286th GD show. 🎉
How was Austria?
@@michaelbrand7729 Austria was awesome. Spent 2 years at the University of Salzburg. It changed my life.
@@markvonwisco7369 awesome!
In 1996 I was in Austria and saw Van Morrison and Billy Cobham play at the base of the Alps!
I was there! It was so surreal. They played over a weekend in Milwaukee, and the only people on the streets were Deadheads. Weekend of the Living Dead. Oh, and BTW, the mayor was at one of the shows.
ALLAN 2 "L's"..........
