For y'all having problems with that diminished run at the end, I saw Brian do this by sliding the ring finger instead of picking with the pinky. This speeds things up and has a good cadence. Great lesson!
I am using this to learn Stray Cat Strut. I viewed several other tutorials, and this one is great. Learning so much from all the goodies on UGS PRO. Thanks!
Erich, I really want to tell you a huge Thank-You for being on UA-cam. (I play bass and guitar) You and your videos used to inspire me to be a better musician at college years ago. It really makes me happy to know that you are still doing what you did for me at college today. I think that I speak for the millions of little guitarists who watch you on UA-cam and or are a part of your guitar sage website when I say thank you sir. Keep on rocking boss, I believe you are saving a lot more kids by you teaching your guitar and you can ever possibly realize.
@@yourguitarsage You're quite welcome! Do you have a channel or program for learning: theory, scales (and when to use them)? I feel like Guitar George. I know all the chords but can't make it cry or sing! Pay to play works for me! Thanks so much.
Great Video thanks for posting! 7:20 Setzer is mimicing a banjo roll and uses a hybrid of Travis and Chicken Pickin' - not flat picking. If you watch him play live, you will see he often tucks his pick into his palm to finger pick these solos.
Thanks for taking the time to do this Erich (all three Strut lessons) ! Extremely helpful. I just bought my first Gretsch, and found out today that Setzer's tour stops by us this summer (I live in coastal southern Maine). This is just what I needed to complete my day!
Cool lesson sir I play this in my band but as I do with all our songs the solos hint of the original but never copy note for note. However I do sit and play/learn from you tube and find yours most informative.
Excellent lesson, but it would be even better if you would start out by just playing through the solo once and then end the lesson with playing through the solo again, that way we can get a better idea of how it all sounds together and play along with you once we've learned it. Thanks!
Really enjoyable lesson to watch - nice guitar - very compressed Gretsch sound ! anyway - 'the lick' - diminished kinda thing - there's NO 'd' in that 3rd rake - on g string - he plays c (5th fret) straight to eb (8th fret) there's no 'd' - (which does make those last 3 notes a straight diminished rake exercise) - I listened to the original version - after watching your vid - and 2 live versions - Have a listen again - he doesn't touch the d ! I'm not knocking your tutorial it's excellent
Love the video. A buddy at work who is half decent at playing songs...chords , rhythm stuff only, was saying he was looking for a fast way to start learning scales so he can play solos rather than always playing the rhythm. I told him to subscribe to your site but what do you think would be the first thing to get? The Ebooks or watch the videos? to teach him about scales and playing lead patterns? Thanks for all the awesome videos you keep producing.
@@yourguitarsage Hey Erich its ok i`ve found your full cover and i can learn from there. I`ve had my Gretsch just a few weeks and this is going to be the first full tune i`m learning on it along with some Scotty Moore. I`m also checking out YourGuitarSage options... thanks again for all your hard work you put into this classic 80`s Rockabilly tune.
Hey Erich. I have been playing the guitar lately and I am a leftie. I realized one thing, my left hand is way more flexible than the right hand, which makes me question why its 'better' to use the left hand for strumming (seemingly the easier thing to do) instead of using it fo the chords. Is there really any reasoning behind it? PS: The guitar you've got here looks pretty nice.
im a leftie and there was no left handed guitar in the place i bought at so i got a right handed and i was thinking the same think,it's way easier for me to change chords and do the chords with my left hand... i would like to know why it's recommended to use a left handed guitar when you are left handed and the other way around as well.
Thanks my friend. Really it's a matter of choice. If it feels better for you doing it the other way, then do that. However, lefty guitars are far and few between.
RexZig HD My own guitar isn't 'originally' left handed as well, I just asked my school music teacher if he could swap the strings around for me, and it works just like a normal guitar would.
Thanks I've always wanted to learn this tune - very straightforward lesson! Also those chords you were talking about were Major 6th chords, a staple in swing/rockbilly music. Just sayin'.
You're a good player, but it would be helpful as a teacher to know what chords and pitches are called in this key (in all keys for that matter). We're in C minor - 3 flats in the key signature, Bb, Eb & Ab. There is no A# or G# in the key of C minor. The opening chords are C minor, B flat, A flat & G7. Some folks may not care about this. As you know, there's ton of misinformation and lousy guitar lessons on UA-cam. There are a number of good lessons too. You're good enough to not be associated with the bad ones. Brush up on your music theory.
😂 the Chet is the original. Setzer slapped his name on a Chet to make money. That’s a 1959 and a $15k guitar. Its actually Brian’s favorite guitar and year. He owes many just like this one.
@@yourguitarsage Yeah, but you're playing Brian's song. I actually like D'Angelico semi-hollow body guitars better than the Gretsch. Now that's an absolute classic to rule them all.

Ab,,,,,,,,,G#. Same note, this stuff is for beginners. Being pedantic is just being picky, he's showing us how to play it rather than teaching theory.
