The most interesting thing I’ve taken from this video is that this doctor no longer prescribes a way of eating but instead gives his patients information and presents it a way that they understand. This is much more effective.
Finally someone! I have been diagnosed with pre T2D and I have succesfully reverted it in less than 2 months, following a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting (OMAD). Lost 15kg already and feeling a lot better! (started from 140kg) Obviously there is a long road before me, but I have finally found a "diet" tthat works! I am also taking part of the "A healthier you" group programme, suggested by my GP and it is very sad to see that they are still demonising fat, when the biggest problem is carbs. I find it very difficult to hold myself back and not start lecturing the lecturer (spent my last 3 months learning everything I could about T2D and LCHF), but I have decided that for my next session I will collate a useful amount of information, with recommended books and youtube material and hand it over to the lecturer privately, after the session. I would be interested to see what others have been experiencing and some suggestions on how to deal with this, as I want to help my fellow "classmates". (without confronting the lecturer mid-class, obviously) And finally, thank you DR. Unwin for all the hard work and for spreading the knowledge!
Even simpler for me...shop only the meat, produce, and dairy/eggs section of the store and stay out of the middle aisles, where most of the products are that seem so "confusing" to others. I only sometimes go in them to get a bottle of mustard or some spice, or can of tomatoes.
Don't try to tell patients WHAT to do but instead explain to them WHY - let them work it out themselves so that they take ownership themselves and take credit for making a change for the better.
Thank you so much Dr. Unwin. I'll keep note on all that you said as I shift to a low carb diet. I can sense your sincerity with the way you treat your patients. You have an aura of calmness and joy. Your patients are blessed to have you. God bless you! 😇
I have just "discovered" your youtube videos, Dr. Unwin, and am finding them very helpful ... especially in "how" to speak to people who ask questions and want to know what I am doing to lose weight, etc ... I have to remind myself to try to be simpler in sharing details. Thank you to both you and your wife!
Thankyou Dr Unwin I like your approach to these nutritional points on sugar etc. Nutrition is very complex but it can be explained in simple terms that all can understand and apply to their daily living putting across healthy and simple points to family and friends, good video.
I found the doctor's approach ideal as it gives the patient autonomy and empowers them to proactively make dietary decisions. My doctor did the same with me 2 weeks ago by showing me three lists of foods that were categorised in red, amber and green sectors from the Freshwell Study. Red was basically the white stuff. I'm changing my dietary choices. I've lost 5lbs in two weeks. It's a struggle changing mealtime habits but I know the health benefits outweigh the continued carb bias lifestyle. Onwards and upwards ❤
I was so addicted to sugar and carbs that it took several weeks to break the addiction - I still eat birthday and Christmas cake and mothers Christmas pudding - but it is a rare treat.

I have type 2 diebetes and my sugar level always stays above 10mmol even after medication. After starting low carb diet and no sugary drink, my blood glucose level down to 6mmol and Im losing a weight. Im also doing low impact exercise for 2 hours per day and intermitten fasting
Hello dr I have been trying to do low carb and have been looking at different sites but the ones I have found are mainly American and the products recommended are not available in uk so I am glad I found you and hope I can do better thank you
Cutting out processed foods just might be enough for many. Sadly, the western diet has already damaged the metabolisms of millions and the only way to repair them is with a severe reduction in carbohydrate and the removal of seed based oils.
after changing the diet, i find it took about 4 months of low carb, before the fasting was easier to do,, quite often, I see how I feel in the morning to see if I am hungry,, and generally it not, which we were told to eat up big,,( by the food companies,,,) the morning iam just thirsty.. so I swapped coffee for water my first drink,, 55 I feel say 30,, to feel 18 would probably be hard to explain to the wife,,,thanks for sharing
I have already started a Keto diet and think your video is excellent for basic understanding. My favourite fruit used to be bananas until I found out the sugar content of a ripe banana. Pity as they are high in fibre which is also good for you. Perhaps a video on fibre would be useful as it does seem to get overlooked.
Fiber is not good for you. It's adding more bulk to a narrow, restricted passage. It's like adding more cars to a traffic jam so to move things along. The streets don't expand. Try Dr Paul Mason for more info. Just the first 5 minutes is telling. ua-cam.com/video/xqUO4P9ADI0/v-deo.html
It'snot amazing to me that all carbs turned to glucose or sugar, what is amazing is that people didn't learn this in elementary school biology, my husband being one. He's type 2 diabetic!!
My nutritionist/ qualified doctor. from France gave me this diet plan to lose weight : Morning: coffee or tea with milk or not, yogurt and a low sugar fruit like kiwi... Lunch : carb ( pasta al dente or whole grain rice) +steam veggies finish with green tea. Dinner : protein ( poultry, meat, fish or meat substitute) +veggie, finish with green tea. Meals should not be big portion. Try to calculate your need. If you feel like a snake between meal, yogurt only 0%fat. I lost 12 kilos in 1 month and half. So my opinion about carb is not to suppress it but to lower it. Why carbs lunch time and not dinner time? Because during the day you need more energy but evening you do not need, your body does not need that extra sugar at all and will facilate the process of fat burning.
Great point !... Glucose Monitors measure GLUCOSE, not Fructose ! People could be slamming their Livers with a lot of Fructose that may not register on the glucose monitor but it will certainly make a lot of fat & Triglycerides ;)
This is the part Unwin is missing in his talk. Starch doesn't break down into sugar, it break down into glucose. Sugar is glucose+fructose. Glycemic load is flawed.
There's nothing wrong with the sugar in bananas. Fresh fruit is the food designed for humans to eat. The problem comes when people eat refined carbohydrates. Like cakes, pies, cookies, bread, donuts, crackers, muffins as examples. Anything made with white flower. Instead, people should be eating good carbohydrates to avoid type 2 diabetes. Broccoli, collard greens, spinach, kale, turnip greens are examples of good carbs. Not all carbs are bad for you.
All carbohydrate - except fiber - turn to sugar. Low carbohydrate nutritional dense vegetables are best . FRUIT is too high in sugar so small amounts with fat are best. 😉👌

Totally agree. Everyone needs to understand the food they eat, and consider choices, and think about what one buys and eats and not just the price, we do it everyday, but do we know enough to be able to make good decisions? Foods that I considered good in the past, and that I really wanted to buy, because they give pleasure when tasting, now many just make me think of poison, and I don't crave them anymore. Sort of like Hansel and Gretel, go ahead, eat the gingerbread house, but look at what happened to the kids who ate it!
Having said that, l had trouble giving up sweets! I put on weight though if l eat non carb veg. Don't know why? I'm only good on carnivore diet, don't know what you think of that??
Need a video explaining the different types of sugars and their effects.... why shouldn't we eat fruit? it has more fructose so does that make it healthy or not?
In the sixties and seventies we lived on stodgey but wholesome food and before junk kicked in. As I recall there were two obese kids in a school of 1200. And that's wasn't a one off. Usually only one or two in any school. It was a massive carb diet. Explain?
People ate carbs back then as well they just had a better overall approach to life. Most kids today are not living outdoors and spend their time locked up on smart devices and games systems. The problem is when a person is 35 years of age and overweight and eating lots of carbs they really have to do drastic things with their diet.
Saccharide is the Greek word for sugar. A monosaccharide is a sugar that has one molecule. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that humans cannot digest. Except for fiber, humans digest all carbohydrates, sugar, polysaccharides, disaccharides, and starches into 3 monosaccharides: glucose, galactose, and fructose. Disaccharides are saccharides made up of two monosaccharides. The 3 disaccharides, that humans digest, are maltose, lactose, and sucrose. Maltose is made of two glucose molecules. Lactose is made of one glucose molecule and one galactose molecule. Sucrose is made if one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule. So when you ingest sucrose, you are ingesting glucose. When genetically carbohydrate-intolerant people eat too much for their bodies, glucose and fructose are both destructive to the body.
You should speak with your gynaecologist first, and if you have what is known as pregnancy induced high blood glucose then speak with an endocrinologist( i suppose the first will point you to the second specialist)...otherwise a balanced diet is an all round good practice and you could be patient for a few months and you can try anything after birth...Always check with your doctors.
Is it safe to eat whole foods during pregnancy, or do I require processed junk food? What do you think your ancestors did for tens of thousands of years?
For humans, there is no known nutritional deficiency for not eating carbohydrates. That is because, if a human eats sufficient animal fats and animal proteins, the body will have all the fatty acids and amino acids needed for the liver to use gluconeogenesis to synthesize all the glucose that the body needs. Discuss the above with your doctor, especially if there is a problem with your liver. A good thing to do is give the book "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung, MD, to your doctor. Dr. Fung and his colleagues have a clinic, in Toronto, Canada, and the Intensive Dietary Management Program to reverse diabetes type 2 and reverse obesity. Check out what he advises for pregnant people.

Fructose goes straight to the liver. Too much of it could make a fatty liver. If some one would still like to consume, better take it in moderation.
Do you have the diet sheet?
