  • Abandoned since 1867, Fort Macomb just outside of New Orleans still stands and we got permission to go inside and explore it.

Thank you so much for the video tour! This Fort plays a roll in my family history: my grandfather had a "camp" (which was wiped out by Katrina) across the channel next door to the hunting/fishing lodge in the '30's, 40's & 50's. I have several photos of the camp, the CXS Ft. Macomb Swing Bridge with the Fort in the distance which is pretty indiscernible in any of the photos. I visited the Fort for the first time in February 2023 and parked in the open spot west of the Fort where your cars were parked. We spotted "unauthorized" people around the Fort and decided we didn't feel safe so our exploration was very limited. I had no idea there was as much to the Fort as your video showed. The drone images were wonderful and your view from the top of the Fort looking across the channel at where our camp was once located was fabulous! Thank you for fighting your way through the overgrowth! If I was filming while following those treacherous steps you took, I'm sure I would have ended up with the scenery! I was so moved by my visit in 2023 I built a replica of the Ft. Macomb Swing Bridge for my Lionel "O" gauge train! Thanks!!

I'll never forget this fort. About 45 years ago I drove to Mardi Gras with some friends. After a wild night we made our way to the car at about 2am and wondered where we were going to sleep. We drove to the coast and headed east and, after awhile, found this fort, parked the old Lincoln and dragged our sleeping bags (the bags were the extant of our preparedness) and slept on the brick floor. Very cool.
Went down there a couple of years later and the place was taken over by bikers. Then, a few years later my company sent me to New Orleans on a job and I went there and found it was turned into a state park. That good because my wild days were over and I had a hotel room in the French Quarter.

Back in the 60s and early 70s I use to visit Fort McComb often as I lived nearby. The fort was overgrown with trees which were quite large. Back then you could just walk right in, no fence or doors to keep people out. One night my girlfriend and I visited. We had flashlights but it was very dark and spooky. She insisted on leaving after only a short visit. Good video, brings back a lot of memories.

Just think, people carried all those bricks there, probably off ships, and set them in place, way back then. I imagine the people working to build it, and doing whatever, cooking, cleaning weapons, during the time line, perhaps even some of our past relatives.
