Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a definitive World War II real-time strategy and tactics game released by Eidos Interactive and Pyro Studios, and it is probably my favourite PC game of all time. Some of the missions in the game were inspired by famous WW2 movies. This is my full gameplay walkthrough with commentary of Level 6, The Guns of Savo Island, which can serve as a guide for how to successfully complete the level.
Level Plot: In 1942, commandos Jack O'Hara, Thomas Hancock, James Blackwood and Samuel Brooklyn are deployed to the Pacific Theatre. In July prior to the Battle of Midway, the commandos land on the strongly fortified Savo Island to disable the large artillery guns, before Operation Watchtower can commence. While on the island, they are assisted by a castaway named Wilson. After destroying the artillery and rescuing a downed American pilot, he returns the favour by piloting a Kawanishi H8K to help them escape the island, but not before telling them of a gold monkey statue which is symbolic to the Japanese. O'Hara steals it as a souvenir. The level is inspired by the classic 1961 film "The Guns of Navarone" starring Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn. The castaway Wilson is presumably a reference to the Tom Hanks movie 'Castaway'.
The game sees players taking control of a squad of commandos (Green Beret, Sniper, Diver, Sapper, Driver, Spy, Thief, and Natasha) along with various allied units, as they sneak behind enemy lines to accomplish various missions in World War II, between 1941 and 1944, that will help them to thwart the war efforts of the Germans and the Japanese. The game also has an incredible music soundtrack by Mateo Pascual.
This is the original release of the game, currently available on Steam. I will also be reviewing the 2020 HD remaster soon.

Not only The Guns of Navarone but also the 2000 movie Castaway, the ball's brand name is Wilson. I'd say it's a double reference or easter eggs.
In the sailors' room (before the golden monkey's room and entering through the other door- 50:10), you can use the flamethrower (which you find in a closet in some building), instead of killing the enemies one by one. Everyone in the room will burn instantly ;)

@45:11 maybe the fire they got going there is their oven to cook food on? Even on a tropical island where there's no ovens you'd still need a way to cook food right? That's the most sense I can make of it.
@55:19 it's been ages since I played this but if I recall correctly doesn't one of those huts on the higher grounds somewhere around there have an enemy sniper inside? A weird thing I noticed in C2 on the Missions in the Pacific campaign were that the Japanese Snipers were still denoted as "soldiers" if you clicked ? over them while only German Snipers were denoted as Snipers. I just figured it out by what their field of view shows because on enemies with Sniper Rifles their long range view matches their short range view.
I love Desperados, it is quite similar. :D
I still need to try that one but I've heard of it!
@@SteveRamsdenUA-cam desperados is a masterpiece, you won't be disappointed. The enemy AI is way better than in commandos series. Also try robin hood the legend of sherwood, it's from the same studio that made desperados

great to play this game again after what i recall is over 15 years. Miss hiding in the rooms and getting 2-3 of my men have their guns pointed at the doors while Japanese and German soldiers simply rushed in blindly to their demise. The camera angles are beyond f**cked up though....I can exit a building and then the camera pans to the rear view of said structure ,resulting in me not even being able to see my character/s. Next thing I know some stupid enemy has a red line of sight on me.
The other thing that boggles my mind is why in the absolute fook do a bunch of elite commandos start their mission with only a miserable pistol? In the previous 2 editons, only the Driver was capable of handling automatic weapons and bolt action assault rifles.........seems like a big plot hole to me.
