    Hi Mike:
    Thanks so much for another excellent video. I have to do the same repair to my chimney in a few weeks. This was perfect timing for me. I believe that "we" (the youtube community) should be grateful for skilled tradesmen and women who take the time to share their years of knowledge and experience. Keep up the good work. I for one, much appreciate it! All the best!

    Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge! I was curious though why you did not wet the bricks any before you put them back? You have said before that wetting the bricks helps prevent them from pulling the moisture out of the mortar or concrete you're using and you did wet them before putting the cap on so just wondering as I'm still learning this stuff.

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  9 років тому +3

      Nativtexan2 In this case none of the bricks were secured and I was just re-capping it. I knew all the bricks were floating and the only thing holding them down was gravity but I did wet the very top.. most brick layers do not wet brick. mostly I only do it on a patch. Its like playing guitar, you just feel what to do in every instance. hope it helps thanks mike.

    Thanks Mike! I am looking at a masonry heater, Missouri or Russian stove to build in my farm house and guest building. the type with the baffles for absorbing the heat of the fire for slow radiant release all night or day. It will definitely be masonry construction for the mass to act like a battery to store the heat. Have you ever built any of those types? great video! people that have never worked don't know what it is to be on a roof with the wind blowing and things setting up fast.

    Thanks again for the nice video. I bought type S mortar to do repairs and point an old chimney( which goes through the center of the house). However, I've been reading online that Type S mortar will ruin the old bricks due to its compression rate and inability to let the bricks breathe also due to too much Portland in the mix and that Type O mortar would be more appropriate. Do you have an opinion on this, is type S the wrong mortar for old bricks? Thanks again.

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  4 роки тому +1

      Hi V, type s is lime mortar with some Portland added, I never had a problem, I show what I use in each of my videos for what I am repairing and it always worked for me, some disagree, but they don’t live in my area, thanks mike

    hi mike I'm trying to repair the cap on my small chimney. is this rapid setting mortar in your video the best to use? should I mix it with sand as I have read 3 parts sand to 1 part type S cement. then I also read it should be poured cement. I am not going to pour it or make a drip edge I just want something to slap on there and shape it so what would you recommend?? and is it the same stuff you used to set the bricks and repoint them?

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  6 років тому

      Hi Gabriel, I can not say unless I was there to see it. I use rapid set for small jobs and if you are into forming the top you got a whole different operation, I never mixed rapid set with sand , the mortar mix has it in all ready, I would do a little more research before you make a decision, I hope it helps thanks mike

      Hi Mike thanks alot for the quick response. My chimney crown is cracked and missing some chunks on the edges. It has a mortar "wash" crown just like in your video. I basically want to do just what you did in this video, replace the "wash". I don't want to get into pouring a cement crown with a drip egde. I read a mix of 1 part type S Portland mixed with 3 parts sand is good for this job. I imagine the rapid set you are using is basically the same mixture. My chimney is just a little wider than the one in your video. I have read a whole lot about this and it's getting a bit confusing with alot saying mortar is not good, needs to be poured concrete with a drip edge etc. I guess I just want to know what's best material for making a "wash" style cap like in your video. Sorry for the long comment and 1000 kudos to you, your video, and all the responses. Thanks Mike!

    -Hey Mike thought i would refer to your expertise love your videos. I am a carpenter a custumer of mine has a chimney for me to point. It s a softer solid brick. i grinded out joints .I was wandering what mix you would use for a softer brick i usally use 3-1 portland to sand. Basically wandering if I should have some lime in it? I am in Pa. also . Thanks again

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  8 років тому +1

      +Kenneth Yanni all the brick guys say I am wrong with the Portland, and maybe with soft brick they are right, but It is either the brick or cement as far as I am concerned. so If I use mortar I will always add some Portland, but I am more a fan of Portland, I don't know what else to say, the mortar always flakes and falls apart . so I do it my way. 1 part Portland to 2 sand, and I never had a problem, But like I say they do not agree with me, , thanks mike

    • @kennethyanni1845
      @kennethyanni1845 8 років тому

      +Mike Haduck Thanks, does adding more sand like 1 part portland and 4 part sand make it weaker. just a little nervous , this brick I grinded the mortar out of today was soft . Not and old house though 1970s. I kind of had good success with 1 part portland 3 sand. Maybe I will add 1/2 part lime. sorry to be a pest

    • @MikeHaduck

      +Kenneth Yanni "Not 1 to 4" , I go 1 to 2parts sand, but I live in North east PA and mortar will not hold up here as far as I am concerned. My preference is different opinion than most but every mason has their own recipe for that. I hope it helps thanks mike

  • @26raa01
    @26raa01 6 років тому +1

    why didn't you put an expansion gap around the clay liner's this is why most of the chimney stacks fail the flaunching mortar around the clay liner's start to crack get bigger and bigger with expansion and contraction get to a point were most of the top half of the chimney stack needs rebuilding and the top capping flaunching mortar you need a overhang with a drip Edge if not after time the water it's the top and runs off down the chimney stack bricks washing out the mortar in the brick's making them become loose

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  6 років тому

      Hi Voodoo, around here you get a chimney fire the clay liners crack and cave into the chimney, the old timers never even used chimney flues, it was a "repair" job and the owner was told to get a metal insert, with a chimney cap, it was a gas furnace, the days of clay liner chimneys are over with. every circumstance is different, I hope it helps , mike

    Yes, new furnace = "direct vent".
    Don't even need to use some of those old chimneys. Woodstove ? Double walled stainless steel flue through the roof, or the wall.
    I may tear mine down. It no longer serves a real purpose and would be far too expensive to repair since it's a massive chimney and needs extensive work.
    Good riddance to it.

      Hi CTS, I can tear it all down right to the footer and rebuild it, but that is "not" what they are paying me for, only a patch job. thanks mike

      That chimney was rotten and you patched it because that's what the customer wanted and you knew that they were selling the house so you screwed the new home owner .did you think about that .would you like being on the receiving end mike. Every job I ever did was approached like it was my own house. When people would tell me to patch it and I knew it was a rebuild and they didn't what to that I told them get someone else . I guess this is were you come in .I guess you'd do anything for a buck .I put my name and reputation on my jobs.

      @@josephcofrancesco4123I see these cheap sweeps on a regular basis and it’s criminal negligence on how many codes are purposely ignored . The NFPA has a few minor codes that are a little overboard but this guy ignored the majority of because “ he knows more in his experience” than an institution that has been established since 1896. You aren’t supposed to repair it how the customer wants it , you are supposed to repair it according to code like a professional contractor should do it. Ignorance is bad enough at the expense of the consumer , willful ignorance is wrong

    it seems like most of the customers you get always want a cheap quick half ass fix

      Hi Devin, been doing this over 50 years and I can't remember having a callback, I always suggest covering the whole cap with metal like a roof, thanks mike
