Mike! You inspired me to fix my moms chimney. I had some local Masons come over and look at it and they quoted $5000 to fix a 15 foot crack that had formed from heat expansion caused by the fireplace. I did it for $150! I Didn't make a big deal about it, I just got it done! ; ) -Michael

Hey Mike,32 years in the Masonry trade myself,I've been projecting all my caps or re-caps 2"from the face of the brick, and using concrete with wire for the caps,it does take an extra 1/2 day, since ya gotta leave the form on a wreck the scaffolding the next day,I work by myself also,I do use some spot labor here and there ,90%of the time it's just me,enjoy your show, and you know as well as I do,ya never stop learning in this trade,I'm 3rd generation Mason,I couldn't imagine doing anything else though,I'm in southwest Ohio,we get the same weather, and I stay busy on chimney repairs and restroration work, haven't done any new construction in 3-4years now, take care brother, and BRICK ON!

Hi Mike !.. As you know , i do a lot of repair and restoration work ..when pointing or filling in joints where we remove and replace bricks , we use " grout bags" ; either from the tile department or sometimes found where the masonry supplies are at Lowes or Home Depot.
We still use tuck pointers , but the grout bags are super fast and you can fill in a joint from back to front rapidly.
Then , just joint and brush .
Thank you Mike ! Love your videos !

Sucks that masonry is dying and not many brick constructions. I really like the look, functionality/utility of brick homes. In my opinion, way better. And these houses/buildings that were built are still standing today. Shows that it withstands the test of time. Whereas new construction falls apart quickly and is not nearly as durable. These videos are very informative. Thanks.

However in my area, central Michigan, there is an epidemic of 1000's of brick chimneys decaying, and never anyone available to do it, usually a 1 year waiting list. Aha chimneys. Our area has a bunch of them in older homes. They tend to be
like the one you worked on here Mike; brick with the clay flue pipe.
Same problems caused by the weather. Working on the ground side is
the worst. The ladder or platforms need the extended stable adjusting feet to be safe.
I cover the roof around them when I work with old foam rubber mats.
Keeps the surface clean and are comfortable to sit or kneel. After you suggested the quick
cure mortar mixes and Cement All I tried them. Very good products and
make my work a lot easier. Quicker jobs and easier work make my bids more
    customer friendly. Thank you!

Pointed all the weak areas on my 1964 colonial in 2001 with mortar in a calking tube that was silicone based covered the cap with same product, then painted all the joints on chimney and cap with a concrete paint, then after paint cured sprayed the entire chimney face and cap with several coats of concrete sealer Go up on the roof ever year to check for potential problems that can develop so far it's held up well for 22 years of hard winters and hot sun in Eastern Washington state.

Nice job Mike. I learned a lot today. I have a rock chimney which leaks inside when rain blows in a certain direction. A roofer told me the chimney needs to be sprayed with a clear protective coat. He also said that the flashing wasn't done correctly, a edge needed to be cut in the stone and the flashing bent into that edge and held in place. The chimney is in the middle of the house and he said the where the downward roof meets the chimney it needs a cricket install.

A friend of mine's kid just sent me a picture of his cinder block mortar joints in his basement. The he had paneling covering them. The joints look like your chimney needing the tuck pointing. I have never seen that with a concrete block foundation before. House was built in the 1920's. He has a can of worms, the joints on the outside of the house below grade is prolly worse.

Great job Mike. I appreciate the videos teaching new guys and DIY'ers some tricks of the trade. I do have one question for you. What caulk would you recommend to fill in the crack where my patio meets the brick walls? I dont want moisture getting down there and before i knew better, i used a mortar and concaved it to repel the water away from the house. Needless to say, the mortar started to crack just after 2 years. Would love your input and thanks again for passing down your knowledge!

Another great video Mike! Thanks, you definitely know your trade. Surprised me when you said brick work is on its way out. I was contemplating a 4 to 5 ft tall brick wall around my garden area. The bricks are offered to me for free from a demo contractor but I must clean them up of coarse. Should I use the old brick or buy new? I have no idea how to place a footing but I know our frost line is 36". I don't know how wide the wall must be to be 5 ft tall. I want a solid structure to attach espalier grown trees and as a source of heat retention. It will be usefully in stopping the winter winds that sometime damage young new growth buds. Are you against this idea?
