- In today’s episode, we review the OSEE G7 on-camera 7” 3000 nit monitor. This mid-tier monitor is the brightest I’ve ever worked with and has some great features not available in the budget monitors from brands like Feelworld and Portkeys.

Something about Curtis Judd’s vibe, instantaneous mood lifter, like no other. I picked him over the NASA space walk currently live. Thank you for being on TV!
Thanks Vishal. 👍
Great review, high quality content! How would you compare it to feelworld 279? Its a really popular model. Also it would be great if you could do a proper latency test like placing a timer in front of the camera and then recording camera and external monitor to display actual latency in ms. Also I wonder if at this price point isnt it better to get a real smallhd 7" monitor for same price? It would outperform at every aspect.
All fair input. Happy to work with smallHD if they’re game.
Is there any smallhd monitor which has 3000 nits for around 700 usd? I doubt it :)
For price and features how would you compare to the Atomos Ninja V (recording capability) and on sale until the end of June. Also, really appreciate the consistency and professionalism of all your reviews. Thanks.
Hi Bill - The Ninja V is great if you need a recorder and are ok with a smaller screen. With my eyes, I prefer 7" at this point - makes it easier to make composition and identify potential issues like things in frame I don't want there. I love ATOMOS recorders but hate the fans in them - too noisy. But recording to SDD in ProRes is a great workflow I use a lot. It's a tough call which really depends on your priorities.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for replying. Is this monitor silent? I often use a Sennheiser MHK 416 for interviews which picks up every little sound. I had a Shogun, and it definitely picked up the fan noise.
Recently rediscovered your UA-cam videos and subscribed!
Question please-
Are the exposure tools (waveform, false color) before or after a monitor applied LUT?
In other words- Does turning on a LUT (on the monitor) change/effect the exposure tools readouts?
Great content, sir!
Hi Darrell, No, the Waveform scope, for example, does NOT change when you turn on a LUT.
@@curtisjudd Thank you for the timely response!
I would like to ask if the Osee G7 has an internal cooling fan and therefore makes noise, which has a great impact on the microphone pickup. Atomos monitors have this terrible problem.
No fan in my copy.
Thanks for your reply!@@curtisjudd
Wonderful review as always Curtis. Although you didn't mentioned it, I see in your video that it displays framerates to 2 decimals via the SDI input. Is that the same via the HDMI input? I hope so. Also, since it does handle audio, does it offer any type (or types) of audio level display, i.e. VU, PPM meter?
Hi Allan, Thanks. Yes, it also supports and displays frame rates to 2 decimals. It also has audio meters. Best wishes!
@@curtisjudd Thank you. I was asking whether it also displays framerates to 2 decimals SPECIFICALLY VIA HDMI since when you showed it on screen, it was via SDI. Regarding the audio meters, which type is it? Thank you.
Not a bad mid tier model!
👍
It comes with the P-tap cable so I can power it off my AB batteries? I believe you said so just wanted to double check. Thank you for great review - I just ordered one.
Yes, my copy came with it.
Hi how are you getting the picture on the camera screen at the same time as the Osee? Once I turn mine on the camera screen goes black.
Depends on the camera. Some cameras (notably Canon DSLRs) automatically turn off their screens when an HDMI monitor is connected.
Hello Curtis, thanks for your review ! I was about to order this monitor but the latency is a big no for me. Are you sure that you send a 1080p signal from your camera and not a 4K one ?
Because this monitor can only display a 1080p picture, maybe the 4k input to 1080p conversion is what's causing the lag ?
Hi biostaff, I tried both - 1080 and 3840. Subjectively the latency seems about the same. It could be my camera, I'm not sure.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for your fast answer ! I take note.
Looks like a great monitor! UI looks a lot like smallHD 👀
Aha!
Curtis Judd hey Curt! I'm a filmmaker and I have to buy a not too expensive microphone for indoor and outdoor shooting. I was thinking of the deity s-mic 2 s or the rode ntg 3. I have a Zoon H4n. What do you say? Does it make sense as a choice to pair one of the two mic to this recorder? I don't want a bad Zoon h4n + Ntg2 association to come out ... What do you say? In which case is better between Deity S-mic 2s and Rode Ntg3 in your opinion?
I’d opt for the NTG3 if budget allows.
Curtis Judd Thanks a lot Curt! Anyway are both good with the Zoon h4n or do they do a bad job? Last question ahah on that figure are they good as a choice or would you opt for other microphones?
3000 nits!? That’s going to put off some heat!
Surprisingly, it didn’t get as hot as the Feelworld LUT7S.
Hey Curtis! Stellar review as always, but you forgot to mention one mayor flaw of the monitor! All of the exposure tools are not reacting to luts!!! (Except zebra)
Basically this is a great monitor with a fantastic value, but this flaw makes it unusable for me. Or am I missing something?
Fine point gboihruvjodjvrv. Thanks for that. I don't usually apply a LUT while shooting except for a second right after I've set up exposure. So that's a good point. Thanks!
@@curtisjudd Thanks for answering :)
I was talking in the meantime to a few other camera operators and their opinions were differrent about that "flaw". For example Scott Dumas has mentioned this in his in depth review and says that it is a good thing that exposure is measured this way. But for me, I need to see if I crash any parts of the rec709 image. To see the waveform of the log footage is useless because I would have to do things very wrong to let's say loose the highlights. Do you know what I mean? Or am I missing something? I'm totally confused :D
Best wishes from germany, hope you are alright!
@@mozzfather When you switch to REC.709, you want the waveform to read the REC.709 data, I would think. That's what this does. Am I understanding your question correctly?
@@curtisjudd We understand each other perfectly and share the same opinion. Thanks for confirming and keep on going, you're doing great!
Your review was spot on - even though I just got it - love this monitor - only draw back is I can not figure out how to turn off the speaker or turn it down?
Hold joystick left for 3 seconds to get to main menu. Scroll down to volume. Turn to lowest setting. Or, plug in headphones. Happy shooting!
Curtis Judd - Found it - oh geez - how easy - went right over it - thank you - it was driving me crazy
What about the level tool? I can't find any videos about that and when I enable it, I see nothing. Using it on Canon R6. Thanks!
Level tool? Do you mean waveform monitor?
@@curtisjudd no, there’s a level tool on the T7 but it only works in the G7.. at least that’s what Osee told me via email.. kinda lame. Why even have it on the T7 then? Anyways.. I’m still trying to figure out how to display the level function from my R6 to the T7 display.. for some reason it won’t show it:
Interesting - Personally, with my less than nimble fingers - monitors controlled by push button / joysticks means I can never have the monitor on top of the camera and do anything while it is recording - In my shooting experience the hunt for the joystick in the dark is enough to shake the rig and ruin the filming. Much prefer the touchscreens. It seems that pricing, although it is a lot better than it used to be - pricing is reflective of the pricing for the monitor.ext. recorders like BMD, Atomos etc. Finding it difficult to pay $500.00 for a monitor only, when all in one options are getting so inexpensive. Quality review as always though Curtis. thank you.
Interesting. I found myself shaking the camera less with the joystick since I can place my index finger on the back of the monitor while operating the joystick with my thumb. But, personal preferences are what make us humans interesting!
@@curtisjudd Just watched your review on the Feelworld touchscreen and when you demo the controls, there is no apparent movement of the monitor - on this one every time you pressed the joystick, the monitor moved slightly. Might be a coincidence - but with push button controls I have seen that jitter on the footage just from what is in this demo.
Fair.
Did they ever make a monitor you can view in real time for the Lumix G7 yet??
Not of which I am aware - the first issue is the latency from the G7's HDMI output. But other than that, it works fine. Is that what you meant?
@@curtisjudd i was hoping there was a monitor that you could view in real time while recording.
@@Trackaddicts I have not used the Lumix G7. Does it stop feeding a video stream to its HDMI output while recording?
@@curtisjudd yes. I was hoping there would be a way to make a live stream on the monitor work.
I'm wondering if Small HD has licensed their UI to Osee and Swit, ...
I gather it is pretty similar?
@@curtisjudd ist is the closest thing to a perfect copy you can create without having the original code. Maybe you have a look at the 500 or 700 series at one point. There are professional monitors and come with the associated price point but rental could be an option, maybe or you find someone willing to let it to you
@@KaidoLP Worth a look, it sounds like - will do.
I'm wondering that myself. I own a smallhd 502 and I'm just very familiar with their products in general. I immediately though they just straight copied smallHD's UI.
Everything looks nice besides the latency. How that compares to smallhds and Atomos shinobi for example? Looking to get one for my Komodo
I suspect the latency is longer on the OSEE.
Hi, I use an URSA Mini Pro 4.6k. If I shoot BRAW 4.6k, 30fps/60fps will I still be able to see the image on this monitor? Some monitors go black when recording in higher resolutions/ frame rates.
I would contact OSEE to confirm.
If you used the Portkeys BM5, would you recommend this over it for a BMPCC 4k setup
Giving that the BM5 with a blutooth module will cost nearly 600 USD
I don't really care about how bright it is
But the sdi latency is a downside for sure, also the Fact that the BM5 will give me bluetooth control over the camera is a Plus, but the UI on this is better also the build quality seems great, haha super confused.
Btw I've never heard about this company so It seems risky.
OSEE has been around for a while. Several years ago I had one of their 17” production/grading monitors. I haven’t used the BM5 so not sure on that. My older eyes definitely prefer a 7” monitor though.
Curtis Judd Thank you✨
Can you review the Nanlite Forza 60 light? or any of the Forza series? like the 300 and 500.
I'll sure try! Thanks!
@@curtisjudd It would be nice if you could compare it to the Aputure products. I just purchased the Centrance R4R b/c of your review, and I am loving it. Thank You
Hi Curtis, I just bought this monitor (the Swit branded version) and I'm having an issue with it. The top and bottom screw mounts are blazing hot, so hot that it burns my hands (brightness setting was set to 10 for around an hour in a cool interior space). I wanted to see if you had a similar experience because this has me worried and I'm thinking If I should get it replaced. Thank you.
Hi Jacob, I haven't noticed that on my OSEE version. It definitely gets warm, but not burning hot.
@@curtisjudd Ok, thank you Curtis. Good to know. I must've gotten a faulty monitor then.
@@jacobargy Did you send it back? Im a couple weeks into correspondence to have my brand new one replaced but i have to ship it to China for them to look at it. Kinda a huge hassle honestly.
Thanks for sharing this video. Please, how can you mirror the display?
Go to the main menu, then to the Display Rotate menu.
@@curtisjudd thank you very much for your response. I can see the image rotate setting but what I am looking for specifically is an horizontal flip to mirror the display. Please, Is there a setting for that?
@@influence.studios So you want to flip horizontally? I don't believe that is possible but you might contact OSEE support and confirm. Best wishes!
@@curtisjudd Yes, I want to flip the display horizontally. I can't find the setting too. I will contact the company
@@curtisjudd thank you very much for your response
recommend a similar monitor for someone who shoots 4k60?
I’m sorry, I don’t film at 60p so I don’t have any recommendations.
Are you unable to monitor when you are shooting off-speed slow motion (i.e. 48fps, 60fps) with a project frame rate of 23.976 in 4K? Or it it just if you're using a project frame rate of 59.97 (real-time) it doesn't work?
This monitor is unable to detect a signal higher than 30fps in UHD. So if the camera is sending a signal at a higher frame rate, this will not display it, unfortunately. If the camera slows it down for playback, that’ll work, but not when recording at higher frame rates.
@@curtisjudd So if youre recording at 60fps with BMPCC6K, it won't display anything?
@@user-nu8bf3bf9m I'm not sure whether the HDMI outputs 60fps, but if it does, then yes, correct - nothing will display on this monitor.
Curtis Judd Thank you for the reply!! Could you kindly test if BMPCC 6K, 6K 50p, 6K 2.4.1 or 5.7K 60p? This is the only thing that’s holding me back from buying this monitor... so please help me out with it.... My Feelworld 279 monitor can display when recording with 5.7K 60p but official spec doesn't say anything about 5.7K or 6K, yet, it showed on display so I wish this monitor can display 4K 60P and higher....
Do you need a sunhood even with 3000 nits?
Depends on how directly the sunlight hits the screen. There's a glossy finish so I usually keep it on.
Still dealing with repair. My fault for taking my time with it, but shipping to China is a complete nightmare. They offered $300 to ship and I wanted to try FedEx myself. They quoted me $750 one way. So now I went back to OSEE for theirs and it’s up to $370 now.
So I’m going to be paying $750ish for a repair on this thing.
They need to get someone in the USA to handle repairs. I’m just in a bad situation where there’s no alternative without spending $2000+.
EDIT:
UPDATE: I've received quick responses thus far. It's currently in customs in Beijing, hoping it clears soon. I just need it back in mid-August, so not too worried yet.
UPDATE 2: After being stuck in customs since the 29th, I wrote them. They said they do not expect to get the item and that they will instead sell me a B-Stock item at 50% off ($750 total). Including the $370 I already spent - it would be close to the cost of a new one. This continues to get worse. We'll see what happens next. I'm certainly not doing that.
What went wrong with your original copy? Just curious.
@@curtisjudd They or the carrier lost it, and didn't even care to try to find it.
Im literally in the same situation💩
Which monitor would you recommend, if I need the monitor with the same price range that can play 60 or 120fps when recoding?
I would look at smallHD’s monitors.
Do you have any thoughts on BlackMagic Design Video Assist 12G?
I’d like to try it out but haven’t yet.
LUT Output?
Anybody know if this can output the LUT that's being used? Can't find an answer in the manual or in the menus.
I'll test when I get a minute. I think the answer is no, but need to check.
Just tested - unfortunately, no, it does not pass the LUT through the HDMI output. I assume the same for SDI out.
@@curtisjudd Holy moly!! "THE" Curtis Judd not only responded but tested it for me!? Wow!!! What a guy!!! Thanks for the answer! Been a fan for a long time!
A solid value. Just wish these were manufactured in the USA. We seem to be losing our technological edge.
Not a lot of manufacturing skill in the USA in 2020, sadly.
I always thought it was a cost issue rather than a skill issue.
It is both. If a company attempts to open up a tech factory in the US in 2020, it’d take a lot longer to find enough expertise to staff it vs doing the same in China. Costs would also be higher, in part because there aren’t a lot of workers with advanced manufacturing skills so they have to pay more. Then there are the general economic differences as well.
@@curtisjudd The USA has not valued technical skill as much as it should. We need those skills. No one should lose that. Germany is a great example. Arri Alexa, need I say more?
Love the 3000 nit and the HDMI ports and everything on the back of the unit. It seems most enthusiasts can ditch the SDI and get a really good monitor for less. Also, I need helpers for my videos like you. What's their day rate? Or did I already use that joke before? I forget. #ClownCrowd
Hahaha! $2000 per hour plus expenses. A serious bargain!
@@curtisjudd See? Now I have to say that's good, otherwise, I would offend them. What's nice is that's what YOU HAVE TO PAYI THEM. Tip: Hide this comment from your family. :)
Will this monitor be compatible with my canon c300mark ii???
Grrrr Curtis! My bank account balance just went down again ! 😉😉😉
Never buy something I review unless it will make your videos at least 25% better or allow you to produce 25% more content. 😀
Curtis Judd - hey Curtis - I was actually looking to replace my 5 inch Atomos ninja V anyways for my old eyes and I think it’ll be great on top of the new EOS R5 when it comes out since I will be recording to the CFExpress card

3000 nits but no HDR?
Correct.
@@curtisjudd www.oseedirect.com/G7-Standard-Kit-p/g7-kit.htm the product says hdr. what does that mean?
@@edmundtanfilms That's marketing speak for high brightness but the monitor does NOT support any of the HDR standards like PQ, HDR10, HLG, etc.
@@curtisjudd thanks. I plan to have this as my main monitor for my Komodo. You stated that you’d recommend finding another monitor for pulling focus on action scenes. Do you think the latency will affect pulling focus?
@@edmundtanfilms Hmmm...I'd look for something with a bit less latency for focus pulling. It would probably be fine for dramas without a lot of action, or corporate/docs with lots of interviews, but I'd personally prefer a bit less latency for pulling focus.
Great video and great monitor. In europe we find this monitor under the brand name Swit model CM-S75F.
www.swit.cc/index.php?c=article&id=169
Thanks Bruno.
$722 is on the “pro” side?
Curtis, pro and con are normally not short for professional and confessional.
Pro and con(tra) is latin meaning for and against.
Does $722 speak FOR bying this thing? Or does it speak AGAINST buying the monitor?
Am I the only one who thinks this expensive?
For the feature set and build, $722 is less than you’d pay for many similar monitors. In that light, I put it on the pro side. I’m not saying that is an accessible price for everyone, but if you find monitors with this feature set and build quality and included accessories for less money, I’d line to know about it.
Damn 4k 60p is the future, so this monitor will not work.
The frame rate support was a disappointment.
Wwww no 60 or 120fps 4K wont be good anymore
If you need 60 or 120fps, will need to keep looking. 😀
