I keep stumbling upon this word "Arete." It has been calling my name. I deeply appreciated this video. Loved it. Thank you!

I discovered the concept of arete years ago, I believe I read about it in a Dan Simmons scifi book, probably in Illium, although another of my absolute favorite authors, Christian Cameron, spices up his books about the Persian wars and Alexander The Great with the word as well.
I remember that Arete was described by Dan Simmons in a passage with Ulysses explaining the concept to people (and robots) of the future, and the concept of "Agon" as well - both concepts spoke to me. Arete, which I feel is the pursuit of excellence in everything, something worth doing is worth doing right, and "Agon" was a little fuzzier, but I took it to mean the concept of comparing, judging, and recognizing quality in everything and everyone...why is A better than B, why is C respected but D is not, that kind of thing...

Hey Areta here- thanks for the love. I would love a topic on Exoteric and Endoteric factors empowering us to do good and finding the enthusiasm to continue with this one set path. It's hard but how do we consistently resonate at a higher frequency when facing mundane theories of life? Thanks!

Today's "how to discover your purpose in 5 seconds" video was the perfect response to this question. Love the metaphor of a light bulb getting plugged in, and remembering I can always come back to "what would the highest version of myself do in this moment?" Gracias!

Heey man, Just wanted to reply to your video, you have a really nice ring to your voice, gentle and sincere. You might want to check out some things about negative beliefs. I personally believe that we all naturally live in or with areté, the only things that stops us from being our true self, is our limiting beliefs we have of ourselves, so we don't take that "arete action", because we unconsciously believe we are "not worthy" or "not capable" or afraid of what others might think of us. They stop us from being who we are, because we are afraid. Once you eliminate a negative belief, a belief that is not in alignment with your true self, you will do everything naturally to you fullest potential.
When we believe we have limited potential, we take limited action and so we get limited results, this feedback enforces our belief in the first place, so we say to ourselves, see I knew I couldnt do it, and we take limited action again and again and again. It also goes in the upward cycle. Just wanted to let you know this, perhaps you might want to make a video about it, About negative or limiting beliefs. It might be of great help to a lot of people ;)
    Have a good day man
    Evan

There are always things in our external environment that we would like to change but we *ALWAYS* (!!!) have the opportunity to live with arete! By recognizing that power we have and acting with excellence each moment, we are in the best position to change those external things and enjoy the process a whole lot more! :)

This video makes a lot of sense. If you're not living to your full potential then youll be living with regret but how do you know if you are living to your full potential? Sometimes ill be working really hard on something but i always feel like there's more i could be doing.

I have a question, I'm not knowledgable enough but I hope you can answer me. Wouldn't Arete be considered "being"? which is already static and complete since its perfect when we humans live we are in the path of becoming. What is the difference between actualizing and being? Is it improving and working hard continuously?

  • @QuietmindYoga

Inspiring as always! What about when you feel like you're *capable* of anything and can't decide what to do? Some choices are obviously in integrity or not, but what about the grey areas? Is it just a matter of being willing to make mis-takes? Thanks!

I experience this gap, I know this gap, but.... (here comes the great BUT!) i HAVE TO GET RID OF MANY EXTERNAL THINGS, in order to live in arete. Not so easy for some, but i guess for the majority if you become aware.

Johnson is it accurate to say that Arete is "self-actualization" or the state of "self-actualization" on a moment to moment basis? Is it also accurate to say that Eudaimonia is Happiness; or the experience of/experiencing Happiness, also on a moment to moment basis? Basically is it true to say that Happiness and Self-actualization are objectives, while Eudaimonia and Arete are these objectives in motion/being acted out?

how do we know that we are performing our excellence in that moment? is it not when we are not in that moment, and we are looking back on it, that we are bale to recognise "oh yes, I was very virtuous and performing my capabilities" or "dayum, I didn't reach my capabilities, because I didn't fully recognise what they were"? Wouldn't it be that eudaimonia could only be experienced in the future? when we are looking back? good vid btw!

Good video! But if I understand you correctly, you seem to be suggesting that our ideas of what we are capable of doing and what we actually do aren't changing and thus our conceptualizations of ability and capability do not redefine our understanding of what it means flourish. .
