Meet Willow, our orphaned baby red squirrel

Willow was taken in as an orphan by our red squirrel conservation team in August this year. After six weeks of round-the-clock care, Willow has now been released into the wild - we wish her a long & healthy life.

She’s gorgeous, I’m so glad you were able to save her life. We don’t have squirrels but we have foxes and hedgehogs in our little haven for wildlife.

Hurricane Ian blew down a tree in our backyard. It housed a mama Eastern grey squirrel and her two female babies. We heard the calls coming from the forest floor for about two hours over the din of the wind and rain. We ended up taking the babies after we were unable to reunite Mama and babies. I had them for about 36 hours before I could turn them over to my local rescue society because of the storm. They were certainly labor intensive. I had to hydrate them every 2 hours and make sure they were always warm enough. Not gonna lie. I did get attached. By my calculations they should be ready for soft release in about a week. They will live out their lives on a protected no hunt no trap reserve. I still sometimes see Mama and she always stops to yell at me from the fence 😄 I'm used to destruction and uncertainty when it comes to hurricanes in Florida but we were really glad to be at the right time and place for those little babies. Not today Ian... not today.
