Norms death cuts deep. It was so easy for me to list my top 3 favorite living comedians: Burr, Chappelle and Macdonald. For him not to be on that list now seems unreal.
I'm 50 and have followed stand up comedy my whole life. It makes life better. If I have a $hitty day at work, I listen to someone's set on the way home. Stand up comedy has gotten me through life. Norm was always my absolute favorite. Quite a few of the best jokes I've ever heard to this day were from him. I was actually binge watching Norm with my wife for awhile before he died. I would never shed a tear over people I don't know dying, but I did when he died. I'm not ashamed to admit it. I had grown up with his comedy. I was heartbroken....over someone I never met.
Norm was an extremely intelligent, well-read guy and that comes across in interviews he did both as host and guest. The fact he never cared if he bombed (he'd work the bit ever harder if that happened) made him legendary, because you knew he trusted his material and was going to ride that pony off into the sunset. I was used to seeing his brother Eric reporting on the CBC, and it didn't come as a great surprise that Norm would likewise be smart as a whip. Back when he first started hosting "Weekend Update" he'd suddenly make jokes about anal rape in prison, and did so in such a casual manner that you knew this guy was going to go for the jugular without any regrets. I think his delivery changed how "Update" functioned. The news of his passing was understandably a gut shock to everyone, and I think if people had heard Norm died from having the biggest balls in comedy they'd pause and say "Yeah, I could see that." Farewell to a legend.
So how come I never heard about this loser. I know about Bill Burr, fluffy, Russel Peters, Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chapel, Chris Rock. I can go on and on, I only found out about this loser after he pathetically lost his battle to cancer.
I genuinely believe he stuck with his material because he knew it was funny, not because he trusted the material, but because he built his whole career on making *himself* laugh and being talented enough to make others laugh with him. If the audience didn't find it funny, he took the time to show them that actually, yes, it was, because Norm found it fucking hilarious.
I don’t even know him, but I’ll miss him. What’s so strange is I was recently on a Norm binge, because my girl likes dry humor like me, I introduced her to Norm, watching some old SNL skits, his talk show, and Mike Tyson mysteries where he voiced Pigeon. We both can’t believe he’s gone. Very sad, especially after seeing all the “Norm was a great guy...but” people. Even in death Norm is still making people mad. I hope there is a heaven, for people like Norm, and my uncle (who just passed this weekend), so that one day I’ll be able to meet them, or visit them again. I hope everyone is doing well.
Dude my gf too she just doesn’t watch movies and stuff, and I showed her norm and she absolutely loves the guy. She loves bill burr and stuff, and she heard his name a lot. She had no idea he was Canadian (not that it matters) but the funniest guy ever. He always had Conan O’Brien in tears.
@@Alegend03 Norm would say things just to get a reaction out of people. It doesn’t come from hate or malice, and he celebrates diversity, even the stuff he disagrees with, because ultimately it’s that chaos that brings him joy. He believes male comedians are funnier than female comedians, but does he hate women? No! He even gave shout outs to a couple he respects. Not everyone is going to think like him, or like you, and we should be celebrating that, not condemning it like what’s so prevalent in this collectivist hive-mind society. The cure for sensitivity is exposure therapy. Hearing naughty funny things you can’t say at work is a cathartic release. We shouldn’t want to be proper all the time.
Norm sat in a bomb like it was a hot jacuzzi. Norm didn't tap-dance to please Barbara Walters, or an NBC executive, or THE COUNTRY'S MOST NOTORIOUS MURDERER. Norm MacDonald taunted a MUDERER AS THE TRIAL WAS HAPPENING. Sorry for the caps, but I lived in that time, and it really was crazy and ballsy, like Evel Knievel. Norm MacDonald was brave, hilarious, and unrelenting. Norm defied cancel culture before that was even a thing; in that the "powers that be" rejected him, but he couldn't be stopped. NORM DEFIED CANCER. The general population didn't adore him like he deserved, but that man ALWAYS got his laugh. It could be one guy in the room howling, and you just knew it landed where it was intended. Late night hosts got him. WE got him. Norm loved us, and we loved him back. Some joke; somewhere; Norm touched us all.
Indeed. Have you seen him as the host of the White House correspondents dinner? I couldn’t believe they selected him to do it,knowing what he might do.
I was literally at my wife's grandma's wake, when I heard this news; my wife being the one that told me. A few moments passed while the news took hold, then I began to cry. My wife looked at me, and she began to cry. I looked up and our eyes met -- and then she realized I wasn't crying about her grandma, but I was instead, crying about Norm. I genuinely thought she'd be mad, or at least hurt, but no. She knew what he meant, and that beautiful woman said, "We can cry about different things and still commiserate and cry together." Even in death, Norm made my own life better.

Thank you Bill. One thing you and Norm share(d) is honesty - being true to what you believe - which is necessary for great humor. Authenticity. That's why you too, are one of the greats. My favorite Norm joke is now the Moth joke he told on Conan O'Brian because I only learned after his death that Norm improvised 99% of that joke on the fly because he was asked to stay on for the next set and had nothing prepared so stretch a 20 second joke into more than 5 or 6 minutes. What a genius!
I remember one of the things my friends and I loved about Norm's comedy was that he was ruthless. He didn't pander or compromise his comedy in any way.
Bill Burr is one of the most genuine comedians out there. Keep in mind that comedians need angles to make some jokes work but he pretty much is his own angle. He can absolutely wreck a person, group, or concept. He can also have moments like this where he elevates people that deserve it and it is just as good.
This is perfectly put, well said and exactly how I'll describe the man from now on. I love imagining Don ohylmer saying " what we have here is a failure to communicate, OJ is not guilty"

Spike Milligan of the BBC radio show "The Goons" was asked what he wanted on his tombstone. His reply "I told you I wasn't well"
For most comics, a regular person could repeat the bit word for word for their buddies and it would still more or less land. Norm Macdonald could do a bit that would leave the crowd rolling, but if you repeated it for your friends at the bar, you'd just sound like an idiot. Even if you just read it in print, the bit where Norm described the unspeakable crimes of Albert Fish and then ended it with "He was a real jerk!" That's not funny. But you watch him actually do it, it was unbelievably hilarious. He was kind of magic like that.
Do you have a doghouse?

By the way, Norm’s big brother at CBC was Neil (Not Eric)and another brother, Leslie.
@Old Stock White Canadian He used my name, and as a narcissist...I liked it.

I don't know, why I remember that joke running something like 12ish minutes or more. It's possible that's just in my version of the matrix, though.
