This Is Why People Hate Spider-Man Fans

  • Spider-Man No Way Home just released a really cool trailer but I do not understand the point of continuing to conceal Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men in this movie. It's such a horribly kept secret that they have at least some role in this film and if by some cruel twist of fate they didn't fans would be furious. Tom Holland's MCU Spider-Man is awesome. I really like this interpretation of the character and even Peter Parker's connections to Tony Stark, but I'm getting a little tired of how they are pitching this movie. There are scenes in the trailer where it's blatantly obvious that other characters have been digitally removed as they continue to focus their marketing around Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and others. #MCU #Spider-Man #Spider-ManNoWayHome

‘Spideys my favorite character but I wanna stay far away from the fandom as possible’ you do realize that if Spider-Man is your favorite character, that automatically makes you part of the fandom, right?

@@novabell24 I mean you can be a fan of anything without necessarily participating in the fandom of it. I could just sit around loving the show the mandalorian. I could be a huge fan of it right? But maybe I really never or almost never talk to people online about it because I'm busy with work and my other hobbies and I just enjoy that thing in peace. Maybe I occasionally comment on it or something but I'm not really actively involved with other fans. There's a lot of people like that. I would argue the general public is pretty much like that. They're not involved in groups of fan activities or even making big comments on online all over the place, they just watch the show enjoy it, maybe talk to a friend a tiny bit or no one and then move on to the next thing.

One thing I've noticed throughout the fandom is whenever there's toxicity, it's always about which movie or adaptation is better, It's rarely ever the comics. I can admit that I used to be an annoying Raimi shill and once I started reading the comics more I stopped caring about the movies and just enjoyed them for what they are. I've met a lot of people who both like the movies and comics and they are really nice people, because they understand that Spider-Man is way more than just 9 movies.

Just a thought: Peter in the comics can be quite angry and defensive when he feels threatened/exposed. Rather than being the polar opposite of the character, toxic fans more seem to mimic Peter's flaws, but in dumber ways and less understandable situations.

      @hughjass7777 2 роки тому +54

That's true to an extent but the character also has self-awareness where he's aware of his own flaws and can work through them. We also see him constantly stop himself from doing different things that would be considered immoral or wrong and lashing out at people when he has the upper hand despite the fact that he would get away with it. These actual angry fans don't do that. If they're anything like Spider-Man they'd be one of those weird warped sad looking clones the Jackal made haha.

When he was refusing to become an "avenger" (growing up) in far from home he thinks he's not up to the task and he's not good enough and he worries about the public's perception of him (social anxiety) and it's further elevated by Nick Fury when he tells him he's not good enough. But at the end of the movie he ends up defeating an avengers level threat by being just himself. He doesn't have to be perfect. In MJ's words "I actually like it better broken"

I really, really didn't know this fanbase had a part of it that was so bad. That's mostly because I avoid fanbases and just prefer to enjoy the things I enjoy by myself because of things like this. On a more positive note, Marvel's twitter account here in Brazil dropped a video (I think it was removed but still) where that scene in the trailer with Spidey and all of those villains jumping at each other, and Lizard and Electro are jumping at nobody. The scene in that video was some seconds longer than the one in the trailer, and you can see Lizard randomly getting thrown back by something invisible, as if he was punched by someone. So... terribly kept secret is still terribly kept :p

I think that toxic parts of a fandom could make up like 1% of fans. I mean there's got to be at least a 100 million Spidey fans out there. 1% of that would be a million. Still a huge minority but big enough and loud enough that they are noticeable.
I think that's the case as in real life I never encounter anyone who has that mentality. Maybe I'll meet someone who's like "Oh you like Spider-Man 3, what's wrong with you?' but that's said in a jokey way. Even then their mentality is "If you like it that's fine. You do you."
The internet just makes it easier for all the toxic people to get together. And the healthy people see that and think "I'm not going anywhere near that" so the healthy part of the fandom doesn't have as much representation.
And there's all the fans who love something but aren't into fandom stuff. So they watch a trailer, enjoy it then move on with their lives. I guess that's why the likes and dislikes never come close to the views.

i agree with pretty much everything you said. fandom can bring people together. but, it can also make people act just so toxic. and i hate throwing that word around at anyone i dislike, but some deserve the title. with each fandom, there's always that one guy. it's unavoidable.

As a hardcore Batman fan, I think the same applies where the fans act nothing like the character and that saddens me a lot. Batman is a dude who exercises extreme self control, is a stoic and a man of virtue while the fans bully people who disagree with them, buy Batman merchandise oblivious to the blind consumerism they're contributing and generally thinks creating their own "Home Batcave" is about having a giant ass home theater instead of a space to meditate, study, improve yourself and generally do hard work for self improvement. I'm not saying I know better because I'm genuinely a moron, but I do think the best we could do with these fictional superheroes it to implement their values in our own lives for OUR OWN self improvement. Living virtuously is a superpower waiting for every one of us.

You cover some very good points Jay, this same logic can apply to music fans, sports fans as well especially football(soccer). Debates about Ronaldo and Messi usually result in the same type of toxicity you'd expect to find with Marvel, DC and Star Wars whenever there is a divided opinion. People get overly defensive for no reason as if their life depends on it.
I once made a remark about calling Messi and great player and Ronaldo being a great goalscorer and that was because of Messi having a better all round ability compared to Ronaldo, I still acknowledged Ronaldo on being incredible because of his other attributes and regardless of that I had abuse directed towards me even while I was trying to be as impartial as possible. When people take their obsessions too far they become a nightmare to deal with and that was the case with those Ronaldo fans.
With regards to the Spider-Man stuff I often see people mocking Tom and Andrew constantly when they don't even deserve it and the constant bias towards Tobey does irritate me a bit. A true Spider-Man fan would appreciate all the actors who took on the role with equal measure and give their respects where it's due.
Then of course there's the Batman prep time nonsense, like there's even people who say that Batman can beat Goku or God, it's ludicrous. I can get Batman beating someone like Iron Man, Captain America, Bane etc but him fighting a god is too much of a stretch even for Batman, of course he's one of my favourite superheroes alongside Spider-Man but he's just a man with no innate superpowers in peak physical condition who has lots of money and tech.

I think there are two types of fans. One type of fan seeks to emulate and learn from the character while personalizing the experience, and another just enjoys the crap out of the character seeking to impose their will onto others. It really does seem like religion. I'm a long-time Batman fan, but I'm not nearly as obsessed as I once was.
I'll say this. I think it's way better to actually be religious (faith in God type of stuff), than to be religious over comic book characters.

On the subject of not showing the two other Spider-Man in NWH, I still think that it's a good idea to save the scenes for the film. Despite the valid reasons you made, to me I think it would be more epic to see their presence first hand on a silver screen tbh. We know they're gonna be in the movie, sure, but we don't know how they will enter the movie, and I think that will be awesome to see :D But great video nonetheless!

It stems from the potential of what anything can accomplish, the good and the bad. Just look at some positive aspects of fandoms with what they can accomplish when they are really passionate about the things they like (good examples are some Fantastic fan-animations of Dragon Ball on UA-cam or fan-games of Sonic or Undertale that tell interesting stories with those characters) the possibilities are endless and make me appreciate the positive aspects of fandom. However, because the potential to do good things is so great, that also has an opposite effect where fandoms can and have been so horrible to the people that gave them what they love and each other. It's sad to see that come from properties that try to inspire us to be the best we can be but I guess some people lack those types of qualities and see properties like Spider-Man and envy something they don't have. Good analysis and video (p.s. I just find it funny how this robber was knocked out by Spidey at 9:07)
