Yeah, trans-men are assaulted pretty much as often trans-women, but they get lumped in with cis women so it's ignored as an issue. That screws up stats for everyone. Trans folks as a whole are the victims of some of the worst sexual assaults. But the narrative for trans-women gets flipped around to make them the predators deserving of harm and trans-men are ignored bc they live in a middle ground of being men (who society doesn't think gets assaulted) and "lost women" (which society doesn't care about certain women getting r*ped). The fear-mongering is as dangerous as it is disgusting. What is JK Rowling's endgame here? To get trans folks killed? Because that's what all the hysteria and misinformation will lead to.

It's the Right that has been prosecuting a culture war against LGBT people and they immediately turned their hate machines to focus on trans people when they *lost* that war against gay people in general particularly regarding the marriage equality struggle. Token TERFs validating the patriarchy is also really a rehash, the press is just more manipulable these days, particularly in the UK.
This whole “rapist” stereotype is reminding me a lot of the stereotyping that got built up around non-white races and was used to justify lynching and segregation here in the US.
First it was the Black Brute, then the Yellow Peril, then the Gay Recruiter, then the Trans Bathroom Predator. First the Romans threw cannibal libels at the Christians, who once they got into power turned around and used it against Jews and Indigenous peoples. Yes, the whole demonization thing is worse, but it also sort of bugs me that they keep using the *same* demonizations and people *keep falling for them*. Get some new material, dammit!
If you would question your biases a bit more you would notice that those are all the same stereotypes of the same group and which is men - regardless of cultural background. Man who come out as Trans-Woman just receive the female privileged of being seen as vulnerable and worthy of protection by society While they loose the male privileged of being seen as a dangerous animal barely civilized who could hurt woman at any point. Rowling just spouts the usual radfem misandrist stereotypes society has normally no major problem with. The only difference here is that it is directed at (Trans-) Woman. It is sad that man have to identify as a woman to get the protection against hatred everyone should deserve. But we live in a society were it is still ok to ask man to go out of their way not to frighten a woman as if man are inherently evil and dangerous.
@@heinshaaine8153 to be honest, I have come to a similar conclusion. Much of the most poisonous hatred towards transwomen seem to be coming from radical feminists, and it seems to be misandry directed towards transwomen. As if trans women have found a way to game the system so that they should be allowed into womens restrooms or locker rooms. Many trans activists I have seen seem to be taking the stance that men are dangerous, but they are women who should be protected from men like any other women, instead of addressing and fighting the core issue, which is misandry.

@@Lewis_McCartney yeah after reading her books I don't have a feeling she's the brightest to be honest. A lot of things in the HP universe lack logic if you think about it for more than half a second. It's not just because it's for kids, because even in recent years when she tried to expand on them with the wizarding world and the cursed child it just got dumber for no reason. And in her desire to seem more progressive than she actually is she even made some things worse (like the whole plot about Hermione just HAVING TO LEARN that it's wrong to try to free some species from slavery, read EXTRA YIKES if Hermione is black). She's just not nearly as smart as she thinks she is but after the success of HP, the people around seem incapable of telling her that. Hence the absolute mess that are the scripts of the Fantastic Beasts movies because she doesn't know how to write movie scripts, won't admit it because she has no self-awareness, and she's surrounded by yes-men. Her transphobic bs is just an extension of that. It makes no sense if you actually turn on your brain and look at the real facts and stats before reading her condescending essay full of logical fallacies. For me, beyond her blatant transphobia, her racial insensitivity (displayed in a books), the fact that she makes no sense yet she's sooo sure that she does, really grinds my gears. With bigots like Tucker Carlson and B-word Shapiro, you have a sense that they are making this for money and that on some level they are aware that they're somewhat exaggerating. But she isn't aware of that. She truly thinks of herself as progressive, smart, a good screenwriter... and that's the worst part for me because that mindset doesn't lead to improvement.

@@Magneticitist Could you explain how the ""cis women" who agree with Rowling" specificaly are an oppressed minority. The criticism they face is based on their opinion not on their gender.
@@CaptainTae I read JK’s claims. It seemed to be exactly the same story that racists excuse for hating people based on how they were abused by a minority. Or how misandrists hate all men because a man abused them. Or how misogynists hate all women because some woman abused them. I couldn’t see any difference in the illogic: “member of group x hurt me, therefore all members of group x are trying to hurt me”

At this rate I'm almost impressed by how determined JK Rowling is to replace her legacy as an author with that of a TERF. It is already getting to a point where I would have a hard time rereading HP without second guessing how much of it is just veiled bigotry.
Can we also talk about the irony of quoting 1984 to oppress trans women when it’s a book about an organization forcing people to conform to that organization’s ideas of what they should be without concern for those people and their wants?
The funny thing is JKR could have remained one of our generations greatest author. She just traded it all for a transphobic rant and now just people are uncomfortable with even being a HP fan. Sad.
To be fair HP was never very good to begin with, so there's that. Once you realise she's a neoliberal the fact that no post-war reforms are made to Slytherin or the Ministry makes a lot of sense.
Yup, I have a few HP shirts and even when just wearing them around the house it feels weird now. I love that the HP actors have spoken out against trans phobia but she's ruined that world for me completely.
@@PlatinumAltaria That was always my biggest problem. Harry is a status quo warrior, not an advocate for systemic change. Voldemort is the actual agent for change, but of course the ways he goes about it are comically evil, and therefore wrong. It's readily apparent that the wizarding world is corrupt, willfully ignorant, racist, classist, and so inherently broken that it created someone like Voldemort to begin with. Yet the story follows the same formula, of just kill the villain and assume everything goes back to normal. You know, like magic.
Now I find bits in HP that look transphobic now. The Rita Skeeter stuff is obvious, but I was reading Half Blood Prince recently and there was something in there that raised an eyebrow. I'm not a HP fan anymore, but I read the books because I like to learn more and become a "scholar" of it as sorts. But she ruined my love for HP.
As a non binary trans person in Scotland, thank you so so much for talking about this Jessie. You have no idea how much I appreciate you. You give nuance and context and you make really good arguments and points. I'm almost tempted to show some of your videos to my dad. He doesn't believe I exist, essentially. He only sees his daughter. I wish I could make him understand that I AM that, but not JUST that. I wish I could make him understand anything about being me. It must be so nice for people who are certain from forever about their gender. I wish I knew what gender certainty felt like. Sorry. Rambling now. Just... Thank you. So much.
Non-binary people can transition from the assigned gender into non-binary. That's simple really :D But being trans isn't only about transitioning, a person can be trans, even if they stay closeted all their life and never transition.
JK is not OK. Does she not see the irony of how she treats transwomen being analogous to the treatment of muggle born witches/wizards during Voldemort's reign of the Ministry? Seriously, this is about accurate representation and getting records straight, as a way of protecting women. But that doesn't fit JK's exclusionary feminism, which, in my opinion, isn't feminism, because feminism is about equality and equity of both sexes.
To be fair, she has some weird takes in Harry Potter, and trans issues don't clearly translate to how muggles are treated. It's pretty clearly a specifically race thing but isn't that well thought out, and we pretty obviously read far more into it than she did
There are a lot of unsettling things between her beliefs and her books. For example: The Wizarding World is a place where magic is used for everything. Work, entertainment, protection, transportation, etc. It's their version of tech for all intents and purposes. Wands are necessary to perform the vast majority of magic. Non-humans aren't allowed to possess wands. This ban was created after an event known as the Goblin Rebellions. Rebellions typically happen after large amounts of mistreatment occurs. Non-humans also aren't allowed to go to magical institutions. So we have a world where non-humans are seen as threats by the government and have been stripped of the ability to protect themselves, find non-menial work, etc. They also can't leave the Wizarding World to live someplace else as they have that magical masquerade going on. If they attempt to leave, and thus potentially reveal the existence of the supernatural to muggles, then they legally punished, which might include getting sent to Azkaban where they will have their souls slowly sucked out. And that's if they can leave with their lack of magical tools and knowledge. All because "they could be a potential threat" Under normal circumstances one might think this is just set up for an interesting plot. We have a dark world filled with injustices that the heroes have to deal with. First in school and later after graduation. However after reading her tweets this might be honestly how she sees the world.
As a nineties gay autustic kid who has struggled with his sexuality ever since I was a teenager, it absolutely terrifies me the influence Rowling would have had if she had been born a decade earlier.
Yeah, same here. She really brought me to fantastic fiction, that lead me to White Wolf and the amazing world of roleplaying games. And since then she dedicated herself to destroy all the admiration one day I could have.
Ok: Some cis men falsely claim to be trans for advantage. That means that their doings are not the actions of actual transwomen or part of actual trans culture. Claiming otherwise is like using the negative actions of someone doing Blackface to condemm black people, ("or if not black individuals, at least that whole harmful black culture thing they got going"). :))
are there cis men who do this though? there's not really an advantage to being a trans woman that I can think of, other than if you actually are a trans woman
I was assulted by a cis woman. I dont think that gets talked about enough. It was so hard for people to take me and the other victims seriously because it was a woman not a man. Maybe instead of attacking trans people we should be helping actual victims.

You're doing an amazing job for your sister by getting information from trans educators. You'd be surprised how many people just expect me to educate them on EVERYTHING for them.
The thing everyone needs to understand is that JK isn't ignorant or misguided. Transphobia is a really great way to get attention. People like her and Chapelle were all but washed up before they used trans people for attention. Just like Schrier or Shapiro or Crowder, they get tons of money and attention whenever they stoke the flames. She does not care that it's harmful, she isn't a sweet kids author who lost her way. She's a lazy, money hungry person who will stomp on innocent people if it makes anyone remember that one time she wrote some popular books. She can't write anything else worthwhile but still wants attention and this is an easy way to do it. It's a catch 22 because speaking out against her gives her attention but it's dangerous to let what she is saying go unopposed. Our exhaustion and fear fuels her attention machine.

"I'm penised!" sounds like a phrase for "I'm confused and angry, but to a situation that is just absurd enough to draw levity from my suffering." And it has to be said in exactly the tone you used.
Because, in the UK, the law only recognizes penetration with a penis as rape--far too many people (and almost all TERFs) take that as "women can't rape", rather than recognizing that the law fails to match reality.

She even convinced our mutuals that I actually abused and r*ped her leading to many hate messages calling me a r*pist. What rowling is doing is also hurtful because for people like me who still love and support my fellow trans siblings, we want to help protect their rights and by making everyone think that this community is full of bad actors makes it hard for even (at the time) cis women to come forward when they do get assaulted by a trans person. I wonder sometimes if JKR is even aware that she’s become Dolores Umbridge, engaging in the real world version of shrieking “you filthy half-breeds!” This is yet another argument against excessive wealth- it creates horrifically disproportionate power and influence, resulting in vast harm when that person fails to use that power ethically or responsibly. As damaging and unjustified as her rhetoric is on the issue, I bet it doesn't even register on her radar. So yeah Jessie, the transwomen and transmen right to life is of no consequence when compared against a few extra royalty bucks from algorithmic marketing.
I think there's a great deal of celebrity vanity, there, too. Rowling got pretty used to being applauded for seeming progressive, then all of a sudden got on the wrong side of that generally-progressive audience, then fell into a cycle of doubling down when it came to a group she herself really didn't want to include in her vision of society. She actually seemed to have a similar impulse about twenty years ago, when the Christian Right was accusing her of 'promoting Paganism' even if she doesn't know the first thing about it. She got a lot of publicity out of those public fights, but she did pretty blithely throw Pagan people under the bus in the name of actually being 'wholesome fare' (unlike some others not really involved but catching flak anyway, apparently,) So happens a lot of Pagans like Harry Potter, not the least cause we were accused of using it to 'push witchcraft on children' and had to take some notice. (Sound familiar?) Of course there's no more Pagan content there than anything else touching on British folklore in general, never mind magic in particular, but instead of simply saying that, she managed to say some pretty offputting things in her own 'defense.' Not on the same scale of impact, but really a similar pattern, like 'Oh, no, having *those* people in my world would really be horrible, everyone's good nominal Christians.' It eventually blew over, but we were accused a lot of using Harry Potter to what... 'recruit and prey on children' by those Fundamentalist loonies, but with them if it's not one thing it's another, and we know most popular entertainment generally has nothing to do with us and tends to get it wrong if it tries, so that's kind of OK. :)

I've said before, given that Rowling threw open the door to a Queer Theory reading of her books, it's fair to analyze how she portrayed the villain of the series. Voldemort is someone who changes his birth name, changes his appearance into something described as more monstrous, begins speaking in a higher pitched voice, commits acts considered in violation of nature, and constantly seeks to invade spaces where he doesn't belong. Does any of this sound familiar? Whether intentionally or not, the author pulled from existing villainous tropes and clichés, for which there is a longstanding precedent to queer code the villains to signal that the audience is meant to hate them. Now, Rowling had every opportunity to make him a more sympathetic character, given that he was abandoned by his father and grew up in an orphanage, but she chose not to. My biggest problem though is that the series is themed around fighting to maintain the status quo. Harry is not an agent for change. Voldemort is, and yet he's the designated villain. The wizarding world is clearly corrupt to the core, racist, classist, and ill-prepared to deal with crises on their own. Their laws do not treat everyone fairly, and a lot of individuals are neglected or mistreated. That should sound familiar too. Yet this is the system you're supposed to want to preserve.
The books are clearly centrist ( leaning to right) than the progressive thing she wishes or thought she portrays . Reminds me of that 4chan Or some other thread screenshot of how harry Potter is not really progressive
Ok so Hit*er was also beaten by his father when he was a child, and as a young adult he lived in homeless shelters. Do you think history books should have depicted him as a more sympathetic person as well? Voldemort put "mud-bloods" in camps. Is that a system YOU would want to preserve?
JK Rowling showed her true Reactionary colours when she came out in support of British Nationalism in 2014 and was one of the biggest opponents to Scottish self determination. More specific to the issues at hand. Nicola Sturgeon seems very motivated to get the trans recognition act through and she's a pretty decent politician and I suspect her decision to enter a formal coalition with the Greens is partially motivated by ensuring a majority for this Act. Scotland being tarred as part of "TERF Island" is aomewhat unfair. While there are a few high profile TERFs like Rowling and Joanne Cherry, they are not mainstream and not supported by wider society and Scotland is moving forward on these issues and with good support from wider society.

I was just talking to my coworker about her today. I said "I'm a Slytherin but not because I'm evil. I mean, I am evil, but that's not why I'm a Slytherin. Well, JK Rowling thinks I'm evil, but that's beside the point." It got a good chuckle out of my coworker lol
Sorting Hat: "If you knew how to hide it I'd put you in Ravenclaw. If you weren't aware of it I'd put you in Hufflepuff, and if you wanted to resolve it I'd put you in Gryffindor."
Ambition is the trait of Slytherin. Ambition is not an evil trait unless you don't want anything to really change. I have always hated how she warped the ideal of ambition. I have gotten by, I have fought for my place, with my ambition.
You're a good woman, Jessie! Dependably a calm, clear, polite and edifying voice in these excitable times. You're truly living up to your startrekian ideals, and an example to all of us.
It seems like there’s this notion of “everyone born with a penis is a predator by default”. Like anyone with a penis who isn’t a predator is an exception to the rule.
JK Rowling is going to end up being some old lady in her 90s who still thinks the same way as she does now, and one day we're going to read in the newspaper that we don't have to care about her anymore. And sadly, that's the most thorough way to gradually weed out terrible ideas. Just let them age out of relevance. It takes a long time unfortunately, and a lot of people have to suffer while the process is happening. But if we continue to push back on terrible ideas and falsehoods, we can create a future that no longer thinks those ideas are useful or appropriate ways to interpret reality.
The fact that she's opted to watch herself become as relevant to this day and age as Enid Blyton is almost delicious. The oeuvre that has made her immensely wealthy cannot be seen any longer as a cultural touchstone. Her decision to die on this hill has poisoned every line of those books and tainted every frame of the films, to the point that the recent reunion show is seen as much a group therapy session for purging trauma as a joyful get-together.
@@ForbiddenFollyFollower True, but the kerfuffle highlights a deep issue within the British feminist movement - the victimhood complex that erases the possibility of a spectrum between the masculine and feminine. While North American women's history (Herstory?) is rife with tales of women not behaving as women "should" behave, there are few instances of that in the British experience. The walls between the "spheres" seem as high and as opaque as ever over in Blighty, while in North America they've largely been erased.
@@ForbiddenFollyFollower Huh? I suppose when the word "trigger" can be as broadly defined as you want, you can say that any expression of disagreement is being "triggered".
I remember some point in a previous decade when being a harry potter fan was suddenly a thing I could do after leaving the religious conservative home of my childhood at age 20 odd. It felt like Victory to walk into the theatre to watch Order of the Phoenix alone without having to worry about my parents finding out because I lived in a different state now. ... and now it's gone. Disappointing JKR.
One of my primary school friends' conservative Christian parents burned her Harry potter books. I never thought I'd have anything in common with those people, but here we are, with previously beloved kindling.

I'm a cis/gender fluid woman/person who has been a victim of rape, multiple times, cis men did it. And terfs saying I'm defending rapist drives me insane. I can barely listen on the subject, I watch on mute to surport you, but turned you up at end. Its akin to way the media demonizes black people. Your so strong and my idol for doing this. All the love, you know whats up and hopefully don't let the terf talk in your head, love to you again sister, true femisim is trans inclusive, including all women as we both know xxx
Let me get this straight: - As the law stands now, rape in Scotland is defined as unwanted penetration by a penis. - Therefore, cis women may never be reported as perpetrators of that crime, as they don't have penises. - Furthermore, before those new laws pass, policemen are probably likely to file perps as men regardless of self-identification (cis men, trans women pre-op, trans men post-op, NBs) - My point is, all this means there's no way to draw from that data how many incidents of trans women rapists actually happen in scotland, as close to 100% of reported incidents would have "man" as the perpetrator's sex - Now, with this new law, we may see an increase in % of "women" as perpetrators, and as long as the definition of rape stands as is, we'd have stats for the % of rapes done by cis men against trans women and others. Doesn't that sound like the kind of statistics TERFs need in order to push their agenda? Unless of course they fear that the truth that rapes by trans women constitute a number way lower than they intend to portray Edit: finished watching the video, and saw that jessie pointed out the same thing.
As someone who studies and publishes on rape statistics for a living, as someone who has advocated for survivors for more than a decade, as a survivor of multiple assaults by people of different genders, and as a trans(masculine) person - I'm exhausted just thinking about this. I can only imagine the strength it takes for you to keep doing this work. Extremely grateful for everything you do. And as an aside...I would watch the hell out of a cat video! Do that! Jessie, I know you don't want to be known as only a transgender news creator, so I thought I would tell you that despite watching most of your trans issue videos, I came here because of your Star Trek content. You make wonderful videos in both categories, stay strong!
Every time JK Rowling says something harmful it always makes me think of Obi-Wan in Episode III where he tells Anakin “you have become the very thing you swore to destroy” The Harry Potter series was about fighting prejudice, her views are fuelling hurt and hate, exactly what Voldemort did.
Obi-Wan: Joannakin, Lily Cade is evil! Joannakin: from my point of view the trans are evil! Obi-Wan: Then you are lost! Obi-Wan: You were my author Joannakin, I loved you. You were supposed to destroy the bigots not join them! Bring hope to the marginalised, not leave them in darkness!
I recently recommended your channel, to a friend that is trying to lean more about how to help her trans daughter (13 years old). She came back a few days later and she was so relived that it your work helped her talk constructively to her daughter. So thank you, for being able and willing to put your truth out in to the void that is UA-cam.
I'm so tired of her and her creations, and her narratives.... like, I still love those seven books and I can't erase the fact that they were important to me in my formative years, but she's been the most poisonous, unnecessary celebrity for years. can we all collectively protest her influence and take away her power to affect harm on real world.
Can I say that I'm a bit salty about the fact, that shortly before her hateful beld down she created some lovable characters in fB and I hate that part of me wants to know their story, but I know I can't and shouldn't support that woman in any way
@@grinnylein feel you, I loved Newt, Jacob, Queenie and Tina and was so excited about them and it's sad how JKR wiped out my enjoyment of them as well as the entire Harry Potter series. The bathroom stuff makes me livid. In my university there were times where a guy snuck into the women bathroom and recorded the girls from up the stall. None of them was ever captured and this stuff doesn't only happen where I live, but you know what all of those guys have in common? Dark clothes and running shoes. Of course the police was more than useless because they have no way to find this person, he runs fast, the hoodie hides the face and blah blah blah. All this to say that if a man wants to hurt you he doesn't lose time pretending to be a woman, he doesn't need it. He just enters, already knowing that he'll get away easily. But why listen to women when you can blame other women for their woes, I guess. (Btw I'm 100% in for a video about cats, I'm willing to send a lot of pictures of my Kevin if it can make you feel better 🐈)
they would rather fight the weak people that they can easily get away with insulting, trans women, just to feel good about themselves. much easier than fighting actually powerful or harmful people who have the power to fight back
The only real-world occurance of a cis-man dressing as a woman to do something not entirely legal that I can think of was that teenage lad that dressed as his mum so he could use her ID to buy alcohol... A sad and frustrating irony to the whole bathroom debate is that it's led to misguided cis-men physically impeding elderly cis-women that they suspect of being trans, so the whole TERF attempt to protect cis-women has actually *hurt* cis-women! I wish there was an easy way to present to them that what they are doing is harmful, to both cis and trans-women, and that their proposition doesn't even solve the problem at hand...
Exactly. Female abusers exist too, so that's another way J.K Rowling is hereby debunked! If this terf is turning a blind eye to that, then what was the point of Umbridge in Harry Potter? Or Aunt Petunia? Or Bellatrix, or other female characters everyone loves to hate.
Two things to add... One, if these people are arguing that a trans woman being assaulted "shouldn't be pretending they're a woman"... Doesn't that give away the game that to them, women being assaulted is inevitable and unpreventable (unless we completely separate "biological males" and "biological females" and don't accept trans people's transitions), and that cis women's suffering only matters if they can use it as a cudgel against the "trans agenda"? And second... Maybe it's just me, but even if someone commits a horrible, unjustifiable crime, that alone doesn't invalidate their gender identity in any way. Record criminals and victims alike as the gender they want to be seen as, because that's a dignity everyone deserves, no matter what they do to lose the right to other dignities.
I'm really shocked that no one at Warner Bros is telling her to shut up. It's so disappointing that JK Rowling could use her voice for good much like her books but instead actively chooses to harm a whole community - many of which are also fans of Harry Potter. It's disappointing and really disheartening... It also hurts others who have been working on Harry Potter-related projects like Fantastic Beasts AND Hogwarts Legacy, who because of what Rowling has said will *also* suffer and that is such a shame, they don't deserve that... and the whole trans community doesn't deserve any of this. It makes me angry, JK Rowling is out of control! Just so so disappointing that this is the person she chooses to be when she could be so much better than this...
Rowling is the rare case where the publisher basically works for the author, not the other way around. She's independently wealthy & has complete control over the Harry Potter franchise. If she wants to, she can easily go to someone else, & Warner Bros. won't say no to that money.
It’s so sad to hear about this and once again, I’m VERY glad to hear your nuanced takedown about her and this whole topic. It’s sad cause I literally watched your video of her from earlier this week (which it’s shady that I didn’t see that notification from YT, but I’ll save that for a later discussion), and it’s so sad that she has to be talked about again.
I mean considering massive transphobes who got obsessed with being transphobic such as glinner got divorced because their partner was sick of their obsession I wouldn't be surprised if Rowling loses everyone
I totally agree about also recording statistics on trans/cis status. You're right, even JK Rowling should support that, if she was really interested in "solving" the issues she purports to care about (rather than just perpetuating the culture war, and directing clicks to her pal's paywalled newspaper article).
Thank you 💕. I lost 2 hours yesterday morning working through the relevant twitter page, reporting people and expanding my blocklist. And it's probably the reason I got next to nothing I needed to do done, as the cruelty towards trans women and the victims of sexually violent women brought me down so much. I'm in Scotland and both the atmosphere of hatred created by TERFs and their traditional-transphobe friends, and the knowledge that some people think that only one specific kind of rape ever matters, scares me a lot.
TERFs are the reason that I made a trans character in the book I'm currently writing into one of the lead protagonists. I don't think that TERFs would immediately recognize her as trans, and thus hopefully be forced to confront cognitive dissonance when they realize what's going on.
This video came into my feed mere minutes after I was telling a friend how Jessie would rather make other videos and now, she'd have to make one about this again. Also, I got a kick out of the expression, "She Who Must Not Be Platformed".
Thank you for making all these videos Jessie. I find it exhausting just listening/reading about these things, so I can imagine how draining it is on you to actually make videos on them. They are very informative, and help me keep up to date with all that's going on. I stay away from most social media, especially Twitter, so you're both an informative and mentally/emotionally healthy way to keep in the loop. For the last year and a half, I have been wrestling with my feeling for Harry Potter, trying to separate the series from the author, but it has become more an more difficult for me. I reached breaking point the other day, and took most of my HP stuff off my shelves. I can't stand seeing the name of someone who denies/abhors my very existence littered around my room anymore. I still have a few things around that don't have her name on it, but I am gradually taking those down as well. It's very sad to have something that you loved tainted in such a way.
Being a woman is already difficult to begin with. The least we should do is stick together. TERFS aren't Feminists. TERFS are quite the opposite actually. Feminism is about gender equality and about justice. Call it as you please but definitely hating all men and Trans Women isn't the same as fighting for a just world. She should be ashamed for using something like Feminism to justify her blind hatred.
My soul sang for you over the course of these 2 videos. It was an uncomfortable feeling, but it was a necessary one. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It's good to be aware of these things trans or not.
I hate how the article was very much trying to evoke the kind of response it did. It actively headlines "they'll be listed as women, if they say so" but conveniently forgets that this also goes the other way... And that "they'll be listed as men, if they say so". It actively tries to evoke a feeling of "more sexual assault will be blamed on women now just because trans women are actually considered", rather than "trans men and women are now listed in the part of the research that makes sense to list them under".
This particular shitfit of hers hits too close to home and it infuriates me. I've gone as far as trying to contact the Scottish Parliament to share my story all the way from New York because women like Joanne are hiding behind a myth that minimalizes victims like me who were victimized by cis women.
in order to believe that men "have to pretend" to be women to enter women's spaces, one must assume that men care about such boundaries at all in the first place. or that they are punished for violating those boundaries. they don't care and they aren't punished. thanks for the video, jessie, hope your holidays are bright and 2022 is better than 2021.
I've received the notification for your video while I was waiting in the waiting room for my pre top surgery appointment and I'm currently watching it to fight off the stress. As a Potter head and nonbinary, Rowling's actions are unforgivable. So many people look up to this cis woman. Thank you for doing this video and for your efforts. I wish more humans were as awake as you are. Muchas gracias!
Speaking as a cis dude, the whole bathroom thing is ridiculous. Because let's be clear, rapists don't actually need to claim being trans in order to get access to women's bathrooms in the first place. They can literally just walk in; claiming to be trans and temporarily presenting as a woman isn't going to be much of an advantage. It just doesn't make sense as an example. If a dude just wanted to commit assault, he could just walk in no problem and do his thing. And as for the very small minority of trans women that may commit assault, that just makes them a rapist.. it doesn't negate their identity. Even in a non assault scenario, the possession and/or use of a penis doesn't negate self identity. I've heard of plenty of trans women and trans men who either make do or are even comfortable in using their "native" genitalia for whatever reason. It doesn't suddenly "reverse" their gender. Like.. damn. the logic isn't hard.
Karen Rowlings bases her prejudice, as far as I can tell, on her experience of DV for which she has my deep sympathy, and the Karen White case. One is unrelated but she uses it as a crutch and the other is relevant but almost unique. Her extension of one persons misbehaviour to cover an entire population is simply bigotry.
YES! Conversations about the cuteness that are cats and how they are literally spring-loaded liquid with random moments of insanity is definitely a must for all our mental health.
I was so distracted by this video i forgot to grab my wallet on the way to the bakery. But seriously, as a (mostly) straight cis-man, I appreciate you speaking about these issues. I don't have a huge social circle - take from that what you will - and thus not many transfolk or even LGBTQ+ folk in general that I interact with. I appreciate that you're taking the time to educate us even when it means wading through transphobic trash.
Thank you (again) for your analysis, Jessie - making these videos must be incredibly frustrating, but for now, I'm glad you do! I also want to point out that the rigid view of gender this fear is based on - "all men are inherently dangerous, all women are non-threatening" - will NOT protect women (cis or trans), because it never has. We cannot avoid mixed-gender spaces, and we shouldn't have to. Societies that try to strictly separate access to public spaces by gender, ostensibly to keep women safe, are historically also ones in which sexual assault is rampant - because this view leads to men assuming that dominance over women is natural.
Eagerly awaiting a long winded rant about felines, thank you Jokes aside, this is absolutely important to hear about. It's terrifying to see a person with so much power and influence use her horrible experience and trauma as an avenue to invalidate, hurt, and promote harm against trans men and women. It's such a scary world.
Why would anyone pretend to be a woman to rape? Where will that get you- still to prison. "but you see officer, I'm a woman so it's ok for me to commit crimes"?
Aaand her she goes again. Just imagine if she used her huge influence and power to actually help people, it almost hurts to think how easy it would be. This is not feminism. This is just hate.
As a victim of SA, why would I want the person who SA'd me to be registered incorrectly? If I was SA'd by a trans women, it would be incorrect and an injustice to me for them to be listed as a man..
I'm a casual Star Trek fan, I've only really seen TOS and the TOS films (and the reboots) but I'm genuinely excited to see you discuss gender and sexuality in the trek universe!!!! Gender and sexuality, and how they navigate race, has always been my favorite thing about the franchise!
They really had to do some mental gymnastics to figure out a way how this could harm cis women. "It could statistically downplay the threat of men to women" is such a wild take because I'm sure all women are massively aware of the threat of men assaulting them. JK Rowling is such a dedicated fiction author that she can't help but write fiction even when she thinks she's talking about reality.
Why is JK Rowling like this? If she had quit writing and disappeared from the public view after publishing the final Harry Potter book, she would be remembered as a magnificent author and once in a generation literary legend. Instead….she’s just a transphobic mess trolling on twitter for clout and attention.
It's not the speaking out that's the problem, it's the fact her words inspire others to take literally harmful action. If she was tweeting about the price of bread or her opinion of a movie then I wouldn't care. Instead she chooses to vilify an already marginalised people, making their lives harder, in the pretense of defending women while ironically elderly cis-women get caught in the crossfire when men who think they look suspect block them from going to the toilet, taking vigilante action inspired by the anti-trans rhetoric espoused by Rowling et al. Her transphobic ravings achieve nothing good while harming trans and cis-women.
If anyone does want a cat rant: I have a fluffy little cat named Creacher. She sometimes cuddles with me at night, and wakes me up in the morning. She likes to be picked up and will grab people's shoulders while they hold her. She does tricks and loves to play with paper wrappers for straws. She'll even try stealing straws that are still in the wrapper. She also likes to sniff people food, and will grab people's hands with a paw so she can do that. If I stay up too late, she stops me from doing whatever Im doing so Im forced to go to bed.
Your videos are always very well written and you state the facts without being malicious. I don't understand how anyone could think that you're attacking JK in any way. Also, I feel that she and some of the other GC folks she's linked to actually are talking about all trans people, because they're against self-identification, and issue which does affect all trans people. I saw a Twitter thread yesterday calling for moderation and saying that there's no oppressor-oppressee relationship between cishet and trans people and that JK's views are all inextricably linked to her trauma, and that we should be trying to take care of her instead of fighting her. I'd love to see your response to that, but I know you don't want to talk about her any more than you have to.
This is why I straight up refuse to make a Twitter account. Yeah, it would probably be good to be aware of tweets like this being passed around, but I just refuse to subject myself to… everything about that stupid bird app.
Her end game, as someone else in the comments pointed out, is controversy sells books and movies. And so with her new release comes a new attack.

@@KookiesNolly Very well said, it drives me crazy to see it as well. @@CaptainTae I read JK’s claims. It seemed to be exactly the same story that racists excuse for hating people based on how they were abused by a minority. The funny thing is JKR could have remained one of our generations greatest author. She just traded it all for a transphobic rant and now just people are uncomfortable with even being a HP fan. Sad.
Agreed.

@@Dattebayo04 A non-intersex nonbinary person is trans by definition, since trans is the opposite of being cis.
It's pretty clearly a specifically race thing but isn't that well thought out, and we pretty obviously read far more into it than she did
Not to mention, the way she treats trans women correlates to the way (some) men have treated women (cis+trans).
There are a lot of unsettling things between her beliefs and her books.
For example:
The Wizarding World is a place where magic is used for everything.
All because "they could be a potential threat"
Under normal circumstances one might think this is just set up for an interesting plot. We have a dark world filled with injustices that the heroes have to deal with. First in school and later after graduation.
However after reading her tweets this might be honestly how she sees the world.
I wouldn't be surprised if she retcons all Slytherins as trans.
I'm so sorry Jessie. Thank you for having the strength to keep reporting stuff like this, but you shouldn't have to??? But thank you, and sorry.

In fairness terms like cis gender trans man transphobic are pretty unusual too.
Because, in the UK, the law only recognizes penetration with a penis as rape--far too many people (and almost all TERFs) take that as "women can't rape", rather than recognizing that the law fails to match reality.

When I acknowledged it and began to accept it, it was when the phrase "trans women are predators" and people were only listening to what they WANTED to hear and ignore the rest, so I felt if I spoke out in a larger capacity that my story would be used to actively harm. So yeah Jessie, the transwomen and transmen right to life is of no consequence when compared against a few extra royalty bucks from algorithmic marketing.
Really good, but sad, analysis
(Sound familiar?) Of course there's no more Pagan content there than anything else touching on British folklore in general, never mind magic in particular, but instead of simply saying that, she managed to say some pretty offputting things in her own 'defense.'
Not on the same scale of impact, but really a similar pattern, like 'Oh, no, having *those* people in my world would really be horrible, everyone's good nominal Christians.' It eventually blew over, but we were accused a lot of using Harry Potter to what... 'recruit and prey on children' by those Fundamentalist loonies, but with them if it's not one thing it's another, and we know most popular entertainment generally has nothing to do with us and tends to get it wrong if it tries, so that's kind of OK. :)
@@OllamhDrab ironic given that the people most known to prey on children are the religious / fundies themselves. The film industry is not the only place where Projectionists are found...
The more people disect these books the more problematic they show themselves to be. The magic veil is slowly lifted from out eyes.
I never thought of that, but you are right!
I hadn't thought of that, but... yeah. That's not exactly wrong.
It's sad that she's the classic case of abused going on to be the abuser. With her talent and influence she could do so much good for the community but instead she completely misses the point and hurts the very people she swears to protect. Women!!

You are too triggered to ignore her.
@@ForbiddenFollyFollower people who say "you're triggered", have no argument and are just saying "angry = wrong"

Let me get this straight:
- As the law stands now, rape in Scotland is defined as unwanted penetration by a penis.
- Therefore, cis women may never be reported as perpetrators of that crime, as they don't have penises.
- Furthermore, before those new laws pass, policemen are probably likely to file perps as men regardless of self-identification (cis men, trans women pre-op, trans men post-op, NBs)
- My point is, all this means there's no way to draw from that data how many incidents of trans women rapists actually happen in scotland, as close to 100% of reported incidents would have "man" as the perpetrator's sex
- Now, with this new law, we may see an increase in % of "women" as perpetrators, and as long as the definition of rape stands as is, we'd have stats for the % of rapes done by cis men against trans women and others.
Doesn't that sound like the kind of statistics TERFs need in order to push their agenda? Unless of course they fear that the truth that rapes by trans women constitute a number way lower than they intend to portray
Edit: finished watching the video, and saw that jessie pointed out the same thing.
Do that! Seriously, 100% on board for whatever would be restorative.
It's like Rowling really can't stop being the human equivalent of rat poison. I wonder if it sells her more books cause the way she going, these statements have to be getting her paid 😮💨 thanks again for your emotional anguish, Jessie but please, should you need to chat bout cats for your (our?) mental sanity, please feel free to indulge lol
I'm so sorry you and other trans people with a platform have to do things like this :( I try to spread better info and understanding, but I don't have any kind of platform and it feels so ineffective. I hope you can do more vids you actually enjoy instead. I guess it doesn't help much to say but hope you're taking time to take care of yourself
just fyi because I think you mentioned this in another vid. The "I'm sorry" is meant as "I feel sorry for you"
Jessie, I know you don't want to be known as only a transgender news creator, so I thought I would tell you that despite watching most of your trans issue videos, I came here because of your Star Trek content. You make wonderful videos in both categories, stay strong!
I learned of Jessie through Steve Shives and like people say on his channel - I came for the Star Trek videos but stayed for the politics.
But even now a small part of me is excited for the new FB movie. But that woman is not getting a single penny of my money anymore.
Can we also get rid of the idea that abusers are only ever male?
No but most of them are because patriarchy enables them
Exactly. Female abusers exist too, so that's another way J.K Rowling is hereby debunked! If this terf is turning a blind eye to that, then what was the point of Umbridge in Harry Potter? Or Aunt Petunia? Or Bellatrix, or other female characters everyone loves to hate.
@@catguy4996 wow get a brain, trans women are males not female.
As a person abused by a cis woman I hate it when people suggest woman can't rape or only men rape. You don't need a pp to rape someone.
They probably did, which likely made her double down.
@@Call-me-Al yeah that's very possible...
Rowling is the rare case where the publisher basically works for the author, not the other way around. She's independently wealthy & has complete control over the Harry Potter franchise. If she wants to, she can easily go to someone else, & Warner Bros. won't say no to that money.
She's like Graham Linehan. They think they are so correct, the more people try to reason with them, the louder they get.
What are they gonna do, sell of the wizarding world licenses to another studio? They have nothing to bargain or threaten her with.
I wonder how many personal friends Rowling has pushed away with her hatred.
Thank you for your work. Small waves but waves nonetheless.
I feel you. Harry Potter was my childhood and realizing JKR's bigotry was horrible.
I just can't get over the word penised.
"I'm really penised today."
This is such a wild argument! "WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE STATISTICS????"
"I wanna do a video exclusively on cats soon for my mental health." I am HERE for that sister!
Every time someone uses The Party’s slogan wrong for bigotry an angel flies into a windshield
Eagerly awaiting a long winded rant about felines, thank you
Jokes aside, this is absolutely important to hear about.
I literally just searched for JK Rowling on YT just to see what would come up... Wasn't expecting a 6 MINUTE OLD video from Jessie Gender.
Instead….she’s just a transphobic mess trolling on twitter for clout and attention.
don't forget she also writes 1000 page word vomit mystery novels
Well, there's only one explanaition. She actually believes this stuff.
If anyone does want a cat rant:
I have a fluffy little cat named Creacher.
