In Greek myth, Bellerophon rides Pegasus, the winged horse, and kills the Chimera, a multi-headed monster. MI2 is like a completely different universe from the rest of the series.
"Blade" is a Marvel movie from the 90s that has some of the same fashion sense as "The Matrix" (also from the 90s). "Blade" is the first of a trilogy, and this movie is what brought Marvel out of bankruptcy and into movie theaters. After the "Blade" trilogy came the famous "Spider-Man" trilogy. "True Lies" is a lot of fun.

5:57 As I understand the ending of MI1, Ethan Hunt gets back in the good graces of IMF, making them understand that he wasn’t a bad guy, and that they should also clear Luther’s record because he helped find the real mole, Phelps. But you’re right that he does give the impression that he himself wants to stop being an agent and stop working for the IMF.

  • @BoboftheOldeWays
    @BoboftheOldeWays 10 місяців тому +3

The original plan for the M:I franchise was to have each movie directed by a different “hot” action director, and showcase their individual styles. John Woo was, at the time, one of the most popular action directors in the world, but just starting to make his mark in the US. Unfortunately, this movie is not his best work.
But after this, the franchise producers made a decision to go with a more consistent tone and, eventually, a recurring director, Christopher McQuarrie (who has really churned out gold with every installment).
I don’t consider this a bad movie, but it is the least-good of the M:I films. Things really get turned up to 11 in the rest of the franchise.

    • @VerowakReacts
      @VerowakReacts  10 місяців тому +3

It's definitely not a bad movie, I think if it was a standalone movie it would have been amazing. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 is the bizarre one in the franchise 3,4,5,6,7 are like the first movie more grounded. Simon Pegg is in Mission Impossible 3,4,5,6,7 and most likely will be in 8,9,10 and probably 11. Mission Impossible 3 and the following films do stay grounded but have subtle bit of comedy laced in but the movies do keep there seriousness.

12:52 I do think Ethan Hunt has genuinely fallen for her, hard. She’s pretty, she’s intelligent, and while she is a criminal, she’s only a thief, not a murderer or a terrorist or even a communist spy, so it’s not like there’s anything objectionable about her morals. It makes sense to me that he’d be seriously into her.

Just so you know, is is *supposed* to feel extremely different from the first film, and *no* it's not a reaction to _The Matrix_ as this film was going into production when _The Matrix_ came out. _The Matrix_ is actually heavily inspired by the films of John Woo. After director Brian De Palma said he wasn't interested in doing another one, it became Tom Cruise's idea that each installment should be helmed by a different high-profile director with their own distinct style. This is why John Woo wasn't asked to do another one, because the point was to change directors each time. As such, the first film is steeped in the style of Brian De Palma, the second in the style of John Woo, the third in the style of JJ Abrams, etc. This held on for the first five films, after which Christopher McQuarrie made four films in a row.
PS: _Face/Off,_ is also a John Woo action film and is this very much in this same style

It's interesting that you were talking about "Face Off" at the beginning of the reaction because, yup, John Woo directed that one too, the same guy who did this movie. (Thankfully, it's okay for Face Off to be ridiculous. It's not part of an existing series, and the outlandishness works there.) Up until MI5, different directors did each Mission Impossible movie.
    MI1: Brian DePalma
    MI2: John Woo.
    MI3: JJ Abrams
    MI4: Brad Bird
    MI5 through MI7: Christopher McQuarrie.
However, starting in 3, JJ Abrams stayed on as a producer for all the remaining ones. Maybe that's why--despite 3, 4 and 5 being somewhat stylistically different, there is still a certain consistency. There isn't the insane whiplash that we got going from MI to MI2, or MI2 to MI3.

Best action movie of the 90's? Oh boy that's a loaded question, they were releasing four or five plus classics a year the choices are endless. I'll pick this one... no punch ups, no car chases, no shoot outs, no explosions and one of the most exhilarating, relentless films you'll ever see..... "Run Lola Run (1998)".
As for MI2, yeah, its not the best the very definition an extremely talented foreign action director stuck in the middle of studio interference and star power in Hollywood. I highly recommend John Woo's classic "The Killer (1989)" and the jaw to the floor bonkers "Hard Boiled (1992)", those two are how its done, massively influential. MI3 is a major step up, you're past the worse of it.

I'm a little biased, as I'm a huge John Woo fan (his Hong Kong films are iconic), but this film gets more hate than it deserves. You have to know what you're getting into when you hire Woo. Is it over the top? Sure. But it's a lot of fun. The reveal with Stamper and the bike chase is fantastic. I'm likely in the minority, but this second installment is MUCH more fun than the third one. Thank goodness the 4th one was a return to form.

0:28 According to TvTropes, there’s a cable drop scene of some kind in every MI movie.
My favourit movie of all time is the 1990s action thriller “Ronin”.
I tend to not like pure action movies too much. Action thrillers tends toward being a bit more cerebral, whereas pure thrillers can often get too slow-paced and boring. Another really good 1990s action thriller is “Heat”. A third one is “The Saint”, in which Val Kilmer kept asking for more disguises for his character, but the studio said no, because they were already making another movie with a heavy disguise theme, starring Tom Cruise.
Also, when are you going to do Indiana Jones 1 and 3? They’re classic action-adventure movies.

6:31 Thandie Newton is really, really attractive in this movie, but I’ve just always thought her character was *very* badly used. They recruit one of the best thieves in the world, but instead of making use of her thief abilities, they use her only as a ‘honey trap’, tasking her with lying to a man and sleeping with him. And nothing more. That’s really sad. If the IMF had made use of her thief abilities, instead of as a honey trap, or at least if the honey trap had just been one element of her mission, it’d have been a much better movie.
It’s also sad that she wasn’t made a recurring character. I have nothing against Maggie Q in MI4, or that brunette in MI5 (and of course, Rebecca Fergusson is pretty good in MI5+6, and also [spoiler] in MI6), but Thandie Newton would have been a fun team member. Fun, interesting, and pleasing to the eyes of a lot of men.

John Woo was/is a great director, the only problem is there has been historic moments where he and different Hollywood studio executives have both creative and financial disagreements in various productions. Moreover, much of what amounted to this version of the film And even the longer cut, is the result of the very tenuous relationship between Woo & Paramount Pictures(which has had a very controversial history and reputation in its own right-- especially with the Star Trek Franchise).

Thank you for the video! Man I love this stupid movie, but it sure is. A Movie.
Apologies if the comments have explained this at you 200 times, but regarding your question about why Ethan is still with the IMF: it's implied that just like Luther at the end of MI1 he was invited back into the agency, because he'd proved he wasn't the mole and also caught Max, who had been causing the IMF a whole lot of trouble. As you said Ethan refused the offer and wanted to leave (on account of them having initiated a mole hunt that got his whole team killed, hounded him mercilessly, threatened his family, and not feeling bad about any of it). But when he's approached with a new mission in the final scene, the implication is that the 'offer' to rejoin the agency wasn't actually optional: they've decided Ethan is too useful to let go. tl;dr: Ethan wanted to leave but was forced to stay.
You see echos of this in MI2: the recurring 'it wouldn't be a vacation if I told you where I was' implies that they barge into even attempts to step away from the agency temporarily, disallowing him to have any life outside them. Their callous use of Nyah further shows their willingness to take advantage of people for their own ends.
The dynamic is easy to miss in the midst of all the action, though; I know I didn't catch on my first watch through. In my experience most people miss that Ethan wants to/should want to leave at all, so you're following better than most XD
(And I'll spare you my essay on how Ethan continually transforms throughout the series in ways that can feels disjointed but when you look at the series as a whole are always reasonable responses to what he has experienced ... man I love this series x))

Many consider this film, the black sheep of the saga, a film very different from the rest of the saga. At the time of its release, I did not like it very much, but over the years I liked it more and more, to the point of saying, ok, the others are good, but this one won a special place in my heart, it has a visual style that I like, the action may be exaggerated but it looks spectacular, good coregraphy fights, it is not generic movie without style, added to the rock music of Hans Zimmer, it is a movie that I enjoy. To enjoy this movie, you have to like John Woo's cinema and all his visual style and action, otherwise you will not connect with the movie without a doubt, Woo is the same director of the excellent FACE OFF, one of the best action movies of the 90's, the action is very spectacular too and has really very expensive scenes, Tom Cruise hired Woo for MI-2 after seeing that movie.

20:42 You don’t get to be a successful IMF agent unless you’re both highly intelligent and inclined to be a bit paranoid.

favorite 90s action? hard one. I think I have to say terminator 2 even though there are a lot of good ones. as far as MI2, it is the worst one as far as I remember. they embraces the action movie tropes a bit too much.

This was wildly disappointing when we all saw it. It's a miracle the franchise continued after this bomb. It's comical in all the wrong ways. Arguably the first one is the most "realistic". But this one isn't even trying. XD
Favorite action movie from the 90s? Terminator 2 and The Matrix. But T1 is definitely required and the original Matrix trilogy is fantastic. In terms of not sci-fi then the Jack Ryan trilogy: The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear & Present danger. They're classified as action movies but to me more... political/espionage thriller... and actually realistic unlike MI:2. I never see anyone react to the Matrix or Ryan trilogies. The Ryan trilogy in particular is just... god it's so good. Action movie for adults. XD

Also, Vero, you're great... much love, but I can't watch this to the end. I hate it so much. I'm sorry we put you through it, but 3 is great! 🤣
