OMG your precision gears brought back my school days (40-45 yeats ago) of technical drawing and engineering of gears. Very well done. Your plugin is a teaching aid for gears. Absolutely awesome
Hey, I've been doing a bunch of 3D printing and makery stuff for a while. I've always been so tentative about adding motors and gears because the built in tools were sub-par and I lack the education of an engineer which I imagine is where all of the complex maths for gears are usually covered. It's always seemed like too daunting of a task to do anything but the most basic setups. Precision gears and the visualized rigging gave me the confidence to actually make a slightly more complex build, and so far, everything has been working flawlessly. I love it, it's a blender addon that actually opened up an entire realm of design for me. Thanks.
I've been eyeing up this add-on for a while. I finally purchased it today and WOW! The amount of work that must have gone into this is phenomenal. Relatively straightforward to use and no "post processing" required. It's generated a perfect mesh, ready for 3d printing with no flipped normals and or repair work to do. 1st herringbone gear has almost finished printing! I've tried other gear generating add-ons previously but given up on them all. For anyone considering Precision Gears, Get it! you won't be disappointed! Thank you for making such an awesome Tool!
I am at the beginning of this video, but I have to tell you, that I use the free version nearly every day. It is absolutely the standard for blender. I will buy the full add-on soon and looking forward for the rigging!
OMG, this is amazing. Not just from an animation standpoint but I have been struggling to do this for my miniatures. Never mind them working, that is an added bonus.
I used the lite Version for some time now, today i bought the Full Version, and i enjoy it. And i have some suggestions - play the rig should work by rotating the driver(just like the native driver/driven in blender). For planets there could be a duplicate gear, so you have to manage only one planet. Especially for 3d printing a overall bevel at top and bottom would be nice(now possible in many parameters)
Perfectly what I required. downloaded the lite to try it out then 10mins later payed for the full version. well worth the money to save my hours of learning how to model each type of gear. Thanks for creating the plugin! :)
It looks like this video is NOT for the free/light version which I use. For example I don't find any "rigging" option, which make it impossible follow the video.
Worm cut gears are what you are supposed to use with worm gears, as they lean onto the worm gear on a larger surface. Ofc. they are harder to make. And if you want perfection the length of worm gear teeth should vary along its axis to allow it to engage more teeth on the worm cut gear simultaneously - sorry i am not up to my english jargon so name doesnt jumps to mind immediately.
Cycloidal and harmonic drives would be a great add. I have a python script that I've written that will generate a proper cycloidal gear but it lacks the animation, rigging, and nice user interface you've added. If you decide to add cycloidal gears, and want that script, let me know and I'll send it to you.
Would love to add it in the future. By all means if your happy to share it send it over to hello@makertales.com and I'll see if it can be implemented in the next round of development
Is there a way to use a mesh as a parent, to drive the movement of some of the gears, against other gears in the rig? Basically if you had a planetary gearbox or a differential, is there a way to use a carriage to rotate the three planetary gears against/around either the sun or the ring gears, while still using the sun and ring gears to also drive the rotation of the planetary gears?
This is a phenomenal tool and tutorial! Question: If I wanted to add beams into the center of a gear to connect two separate suites of gears is there a way to do that with this tool?
Man if you cut out all the Blender stuff this would be an incredibly good course on gear design/mechanics for engineers and industrial maintenance techs! Definitely worth while for the uninitiated.
Wow what a great plugin looks real useful might try it out next time I need to do something with gears, I just used some openSCAD project in the past to create gears, then import. Actually a plugin that could render openscad files and show "customizer" interface would be really dope, wonder how hard it would be to do. Only blender development I ever did was change one line of code in the gltf exporter.
@MakerTales there is an objection, that the tooth-geometry of the ring gear isn't right - so the question is, is it the same geometry as the spur gear or has it its own derivation?
There seems to be an issue in blender 4.0 Adding any gear will only create a plane unresponsive to any changes in the object settings. This is on an M1 OSX. Works fine in 3.6 though.
Finally! I don't need to learn another 3D software like FreeCAD, because I am fluent in Blender and do everything in Blender for 3D printing :D All I had struggles was making 3D gears from gear generator pictures, sweet! Thanks, worse the money
Great job :D Just bought it on the blendermarket and it´s super helpful. I have a question, is it possible to parent other objects to the instanced gears etc. without boolean it to the original gear?
I do have some issues. First, my camera and view get dark so I cannot see the spur gears and the rig anymore; the same when I render the scene. And second, I would like to add an axis to a spur gear, which should rotate as a compound one. (I am making a mechanical clock movement). How? Third, I know that a spur gear (in my case) makes exactly one round per minute, how do I set up the "use time" settings that this matches? Overwise, I am very impressed by the addon. Worth buying!
1. I have lots on videos on how to use blender maybe take a look at a few of the navigation ones as I'm not sure what is going on for you. You can also join the discord and see if other makers can help you out on things going "dark"? 2. Can't see the rig and spur gear, agian sounds like blender navigation. 3. Please refer to 37:29 the must knows there youhave an exsample of the compound rigging. 4. Use time and set that to the FPS of your project. by defualt it should be 24 in a blender file. BIG WARNING! if you make things perfectly in sync time like this be ready to deal with the "waggon wheel effect" where gears "LOOK" like there going in the wrong direciton. and SO glad your a fan. With a bit of luck more is still to come! Not to mention all the things we are all going to get making
Am I able to create compound gears for 3D printing with this add on? If so, how? I saw in the video he did it for rigging but I need to actually 3D print the compound gear.
I can't get the scale to match the project scale. the measurements are different in the Object properties panel. I've tried transform and delta transform scales and changing the project unit scale
Do you have a tutorial on how to make things live-simulate animated gear creations? I want to make a whole bunch of gears turn in funky ways with only the one driveshaft input.
Not quite there yet =/ With a bit of luck in the next update once development funds are up again. At the moment you would need to make the ratcher and paw by hand
Hi, just bought the addon and I really want to modify my gears to be a radial array as shown at 41:30. Could you like me to the video that shows how to do this? Thanks
Hello, is there any way to auto align the vertices on the bore hole so that the edges coming from the gears align with the vertices from the bore inner faces? Great plugin!!!
I really like this. I don't use a ton of gears in my work flow, that being said for $8 you have a revolutionary tool here. There is no real software out there that has the power and ability of this plugin. I can see many uses for this in 3D printing and making accurate models for prototyping.
I would love a deep dive. I'm trying to model old clock gears and I know teeth count and diameter; however, I'm not sure which diameter since the reference document is from 1880.
Can't rig two identical gears in Blender 4.1. Enabling rigging on the driver gear works and creates an instance. But clicking the second gear and pointing to the driver gear does not create the second instance. If I switch to compound mode, the second instance is created. Please update soon!
Ok, I found the problem: I want to create sub-miniature gears with a diameter of 4m away from the world origin. Ok. So I adjusted the world units to mm and tried again with the real dimensions in mm and no scaling. But in this case the geometry of the gear is not sufficient, showing mishaped tips and edes. Increasing the complexity to 25 didn't help. Maybe I'm missing a point here?
I just purchased this add on and I am getting an error message when trying to enable the add on. The error says ValueError: register_class(...): already registered as a subclass 'PrecisionGearsProps'. Any idea how to resolve this?
Looking at the worm gear options around the 12 minute mark in the context of your comment about "worms don't have fifty teeth".... I don't see anywhere to give a worm multiple starts (parallel threads) which is a pretty common design element. Am I just missing it, or is it not there?
Also, the little mini-rant around minute 27 about "how gears are made" is under-informed. Modulus multiplied by tooth count is the determinator of diameter in metric gearing, yes. HOWEVER, imperial gear sizes actually do begin their dimensioning at the diameter of the gear (I forget if that's specifically the pitch diameter or one of the other diameters). Of course, in both cases that's for "standard" gears; after all, there are certainly common enough use cases for, as an example, 1 modulus 8 tooth metric gears with a nominal diameter of 40 millimeters.
So much math is under the hood, that is so exciting! The rigging is just crazy! It would be nice to have a vertex on center of every teeth on the radius for snapping reasons, if you don't use the rigging.
Considering buying this and use it for games. How's the polycount? I noticed the verts are somewhat high for 1 spur gear, granted I could just optimize the mesh myself.
I purchased it, but the spur gear is missing linear motion rigging. This means you can't design anything where the rack is stationary and have the rotate *and* move with linear motion along the rack. (think rack and pinion CNC or 3D printer) I'm stuck. Any ideas?
@@Keep-Making Wonderful! Also, is there a 'Hello World!' python tutorial available (or that you would recommend) to move a precision gear? (it seems hard because it has to rotate correctly as it moves linearly) Perhaps your add-on exposes functions to do this? I'm a software developer kinda newish at Blender with a Blender rank of: overwhelmed newbie/intermediate. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Although color Materials can be controlled, it does not follow the rotation of the gear. . Can I only use it for simulation purposes? I would like to introduce it to my modeled character.

I’ve modelled some dinosaur vertebrae and I need to get them to interact with one another, does anyone know where I might find some information about this? Any help is appreciated
I just grabbed this and although it says it works in blender 4.0, in 4.1 that doesn't seem like the case (at least, not out of the box...). I'm going to try opening the hood and rem'ing out anything that has to do with 'auto_smooth' attributes, because in 4.1, apparently, they removed that attribute and changed how its implemented in order to have it work within the geometry nodes system... and i have to wonder if the author plans to fix this himself or should leave it to hackers like me to figure it out... I'm just worried that this will really screw something else up down the line. And if they keep changing how object attributes work in order to placate geometry nodes (which i also love) then they should really fix the geometry nodes section in order to handle the existing object attributions correctly instead... a top-down approach instead of bottom up that could wreak havok upon many python scripts that do similar procedures.
I tried the lite version before deciding to buy. Creating the gear fails a line 30 with: gear_mesh.use_auto_smooth = True AttributeError: ‘Mesh’ object has no attribute ‘use_auto_smooth’ Using Blender 4.1
