Just found your channel, after researching Delicas. I have always fancied travelling in this manner, so what a brilliant find you are. I'm looking forwards to watching your videos.
I done the same when i was 17 in australia until I was 27 done it for 10 years now I am 52 and have a Delica for 2 years I want to do it again can't wait
I went to Newfoundland with a VW golf, a tepui roof top tent, and a solar generator. Albeit the expense for the set up was pricey, the campsite on Fogo island was only $15 Canadian. A car refrigerator helped as well. I filled up on groceries in Moncton, Nova Scotia and only went out to eat once. I wish I was as price conscious as you guys. Great video.
really nicely cut vid.Well explained. I loved 13:35 Gibb River rd Galvin gorge? flash back. Lovely variety and extremes of places You guys are an Inspiration !!
For everything you guys got done fun and living wise, you both got the deal of a life time. Just for a couple living in Las Vegas in a 2 bedroom apartment (the most affordable big city in the USA rent wise), you guys would have spent at least 1,800 USA dollars and that is living very frugal in Las Vegas, NV USA, Let along traveling the entire world, eating in restaurants, staying in hotels, flying, taking taxi cab rides, enjoying theme park attractions, international visas fees, health insurances, diesel, car repairs, buying souvenirs and even adopting and taking care of a dog all of it for 1,500.00 dollars at month. That is real magic. Antonio, the extreme 18 wheeler
Hi from Sydney OZ I have been a Delica owner for many years and know every nut and bolt on them, Great Van. One thing worth doing if you haven't already is to purchase a set of Injector Nozzles. Just the Tips, They are very cheap, only about $ 15. each . Very easy to install, you can easily do them yourself. I was able to get my LWB 95 van down to 10 lt/ 100k . Also as you probably already know replace your air filter often. Those motors suffer from lack of breathing. Good to see you living it.
Hey Rod, this is something I hadn't heard about yet! Tell me more. What are the part numbers and how to replace them? I haven't got a torque wrench in the car and fear ruining the head while mocking around with the injectors! What do you reckon?
Hi regards the Injectors, Dont need a torque wrench just do them up reasonably tight. You can probably find a helpful mechanic to assist you. If your Deli is not smoking at all then they are probably ok. Black smoke is the tel-tail sign of bad injectors. Injectors are very important in a Diesel. Luckily the Delica has a simple system. The fuel pump is like a miniature gurni, a high pressure pump. The Diesel is sprayed out of the injectors at high pressure hopefully creating a mist of vapor that ignites when pressurized in the cylinder. The finer the Mist the better. The series 1 Delica has a Mechanical fuel pump that sends high pressure fuel to each injector separately in firing sequence. If you look on the back of the pump you will see 4 pipes leading up to each injector. Within each injector is a spring that holds the needle valve closed until there is sufficient pressure. Once the threshold pressure is obtained the valve opens briefly and a fine mist of diesel is sprayed into the cylinder. Obviously this all happens fast. You can do the Maths . I think its 16 times a second at 2,000 RPM . The trick is to have a clean quick spray with no dribbling. The injector nozzles do get gummed up over time and no amount of injector cleaner additive will clean them. You can either try to clean them or replace them. Cleaning them is easy but tedious as they are very small and easily damaged. Use only wood, [ orange sticks ] or nylon brush. New tips are cheap, look on ebay, about $50. for a set of 4. To get them out; Only do this when you are in a town with mechanical facilities in-case you muck it up. you will also need a vice. Disconnect Battery , Remove the intercooler, best to remove the glow plug leads. Remove the fuel supply to each injector , thats the high pressure pipe on the top of each injector. There should be enough spring in each pipe to be able to carefully push then aside however be gentle and only move them minimum distance. If they wont move loosen other end. Remove the fuel return manifold from injectors . this is the small flat assembly that links all the injectors together. It is held on with a flat nut on each injector , from memory [ I dont have delica at present ] 15 or 17 mm nut . Now using a long socket I think 17mm you can remove the injectors. They will or should be tight. the back one is the hardest. A breaker bar is good for this. Once out carefully place in a vice and unscrew the injector . They will be very tight and this is a fine thread so be careful. Do this in a clean and clear space noting very carefully how they are assembled . Don't drop them. Inside the injector will be ; a shim, a spring , an end piece on the spring, a spacer and then the needle valve and nozzle. Clean or replace the valve and nozzle and clean the retaining nut ,[ the bottom of the injector] . Simple , now put it all back together. I have found in most cases it was not necessary to bleed the system on completion . Good luck.
That is the best vidéo of breaking down expenses i saw yet 😁😁😁 you guys are awesome, am sad i missed you in Montréal hahaha respect ✌ and safe travels 🚙
I have looked here on the posts, but did you mention how much it cost to get the vehicle to the USA? Such a fun channel and my 13 year old son is now a little addicted to your travels and we cant wait to go tour Australia with him.
Sempre da certo pq quase nunca a hilux quebra !!! Kkkkk mas quando quebra me quebra !!! Rsrs a conta foge do planejado !!!
All sounds very cheap to me. Well Done guys! Your total cost for 2 years Adventures is what most pay in tax in less than 12months. 2 x Return First Class Airfares with Sky Beds on Singapore Airlines from Melb to London cost $30,000
Yep! Thats why it was such an easy decision to make. We spend less traveling the world full time than paying for the rent of a 1 bedroom apartment in Australia!
Thanks for sharing all those information guys. Your channel is inspiring. Regarding the expenses, I was wondering if you could share the price of your van as well? Also I saw you got a James Baroud tent a few months ago but this didn't seem to be listed in your list of expenses. Did you get it through sponsorship?
It sounds like you guts really know how to travel efficiently but I must have missed the info about the James Baroud roof top pod, was that included in your vehicle cost or did you guys get to try it out for free?
Good question! Vehicle purchase and setting up costs are not included for two reasons: 1 - you can drive anything you want; 2 - you could spend as much as you wanted setting up an overland vehicle. Cheers!
Very detailed guys, thanks! I was wondering if you guys are using savings or if you're making money while traveling (UA-cam, Patreon and sponsors)? Thanks!! Can't wait to see where you go next!
Thank you! We hope it helps! We saved up all the money we needed to travel, and all the money we make from UA-cam and Patreon goes towards making videos (paying for our Adobe editing suite, paying for a music library, paying for equipment, HDs, memory cards etc and paying for internet access to upload the videos). We're actually not even breaking even yet! We hope to get there eventually so that we can continue making videos indefinitely. As for sponsors, we don't receive any money - just products and help while we're on the road (which is still very useful).
Hi, just found your channel, you guys are awesome. I am looking into getting a Mitsubishi Delica to travel around Oz, and do some wild photography. My question is how did you get to ship and use your car overseas? I mean it's a right hand drive? Is it legal in Canada and the states? Thanks
Great info! Out of curiosity (and only if you're comfortable answering) how much of your expenses are you now able to pay for with income from your growing youtube channel, patreon, and anything else like that (affiliate links, sponsors, etc)? Ps. I'm in Perth and JUST BOUGHT A DELICA! Maybe see you in Central America next year :)
Hi Kristina! To be very honest, the money we make from Patreon and UA-cam goes solely to making the videos (paying for our Adobe editing suite, paying for a music library, paying for equipment, HDs, memory cards etc and paying for internet access to upload the videos). We're actually not even breaking even yet! We hope to get there eventually so that we can continue making videos indefinitely. As for sponsors, we don't receive any money - just products and help while we're on the road (which is still very useful). Are you planning to send your Delica over here (we're in Guatemala at the moment). Unfortunately we'll be in Brazil by next year so will miss you. But keep in contact!!! Good luck!
It took a little getting used to. But we've lived in both Brazil and Australia so have had experience driving on both sides of the road which has helped. The only problem is with overtaking - I (Michaela) have to let Alex know when it is safe to pass the car in front as he can't see anything)!
That was pretty much what I was wondering. A few vehicles with diesel engines and right hand drive show up here and there. I thought about possibly buying one but the ability to not being able to see before passing is a deal breaker. I am not going to drive a vehicle that is not safe for me or other motorists.
Only 665 493 Kč for the entire trip so far?! I really thought it's gonna be a lot more. When I think you are not actually saving that much... Well done guys. Btw, where do you actually get your money from? Do you run just on savings, or do you have some other source as well? Hodně štěstí! :-)
Exactly Jonas! When we realized it was cheaper to travel the world in a van than to live in Australia and have to work full time to pay our bills it was an easy decision to make. We saved up all the money for the trip before we started! Worked three jobs each for years, spent almost nothing, built our car ourselves and lived in a room to be able to make it happen. It IS possible to do! We didn't come from wealthy families or have any help to make this happen. Thats part of the reason we want to share videos like this!
Your whole trip there is the price of my 3 mtn bikes... yours is $$$ much better spent... you've spent next to nothing, gr8 job on your awesum experience... ive really over spent on my trips compared to you guys
E a gente gasta bem... daria pra gastar metade disso eu acho.

Take care and give me a holla if ya need anything in Florida or the states.
Vanda is pretty ok with bad quality/dirty fuel. Modern diesel engines can suffer a bit more. But I think nowadays most countries have good quality diesel available at the pumps. So far it's been all good for us!

30k.... doesnt seem like much at the end of the day, now i just gotta win lotto, quit my job and sort out my van so i can travel the world and carry our dirt bikes on a trailer ;-)
Hey mate, we have our shipment scheduled to July 9th! So we will start driving back to Mexico soon! We won't do the rally anymore as Mitsubishi won't be there... instead we decided to spend more time exploring the best parts of South America! You coming to join us? Cheers!
cant belive u only spent 2600 total maintenance costs on the car you must have spent a fortune on it fixing literally everything before you went there is no way u would spent that little on an old car doing what u did its impossible, yes i have one did u buy a low klm one with only 10000 klm from japan or something
Valeu, Sergio!

Great breakdown and honest thank you.

I've seen post that right hand drive cars are not allowed in some countries in Central America, were you able to drive through Nicaragua?
Hi, just found your channel, you guys are awesome. I am looking into getting a Mitsubishi Delica to travel around Oz, and do some wild photography.
My question is how did you get to ship and use your car overseas? I mean it's a right hand drive?
Is it legal in Canada and the states? Thanks
Who do you use to ship the car?
Great video guys.. did you include the cost of the Carnet in the "shipping vehicle" category as there was no mention of it.
Cheers and happy travels
Hi Craig, we don't have a Carnet as it is hasn't been necessary yet. Cheers!
Excelente video! Saludos desde Colombia!
Gracias Juan!
Great job - enjoy!
Very helpful, thank you! 👍✌️
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Do you guys have sponsorships? Are you traveling on your savings? Do you work from the road or do odd jobs?

Hi guys,

What is it like driving a right hand drive car in the US?
It took a little getting used to. But we've lived in both Brazil and Australia so have had experience driving on both sides of the road which has helped. The only problem is with overtaking - I (Michaela) have to let Alex know when it is safe to pass the car in front as he can't see anything)!

I have a Delica too but not a l400,it is a D5
You two are awesome. Wait until you have kids and they get the wander bug!
Thanks, mate! Imagine if our kids turn out to be total travel-phobic lol

Fuel quality would be an issue as well I'd dare say?
Vanda is pretty ok with bad quality/dirty fuel. Modern diesel engines can suffer a bit more. But I think nowadays most countries have good quality diesel available at the pumps. So far it's been all good for us!
muito bem feito! parabéns !!
Obrigado! Abraços!
Kkkk A cara do Alex .. Com certeza vale cada centavo.
Vamos que vamos!

It's possible, even if you don't win the lottery! Work hard, save every penny and travel on a budget! Living in a van is very cheap!
How long until you guys ship the car down to S. America for the Dakar rally?
Hey mate, we have our shipment scheduled to July 9th! So we will start driving back to Mexico soon! We won't do the rally anymore as Mitsubishi won't be there... instead we decided to spend more time exploring the best parts of South America! You coming to join us? Cheers!

What are your jobs?
When at work Alex is an Industrial Engineer and Michaela works with Marketing. Cheers!
great
Definitely cheaper than living in one place even in a mid suburb in a 3rd world country. Can’t believe that fuel cost is that low.
Exactly!!!! Cheaper to travel the world for 3 years than to live in an apartment and work full time to pay the rent! Easy decision to make!
Fuck me. That's cheaper then my rent (divided by 2people) and I haven't even eaten yet.
cant belive u only spent 2600 total maintenance costs on the car you must have spent a fortune on it fixing literally everything before you went there is no way u would spent that little on an old car doing what u did its impossible, yes i have one did u buy a low klm one with only 10000 klm from japan or something
wow - that is not much money at all for 2 years. probably would have spent more staying home and working.
you should get engaged
