Stunned at how much credit you keep giving VW when they are clearly treating you like crap. Don't let the dealer off the hook either, they represent the brand. They should have offered to buy back the car, or provided you an electric only loaner, and offered you free charging. They at least should be covering your damn gas! They don't deserve a bit of the loyalty you show them.

I have an 2021 ID4 1st in North America that is basically a black box to dealers who know less about the ID4 than I do. My ID4 routenly throws a range of errors including driver assist not working. None of this seems to be tracible by the dealer. You have way more patience than I do. I traded a Tesla Model Y for my ID.4 around three months ago. When I bought it, I knew it had an issue with the driver assist, so I took it in for the service, which took a week. The day I picked it up, the same issue was back, along with some new friends. Basically, I was getting error messages for every safety related part of my car. I took it back and was told I needed the same part replaced again. This time, there was no part to be had and there was no idea when it would be shipped. After the first few days, I requested they buy back the car and give me a new one, but they refused. After two weeks in service with no part available or en route, I requested they buy back my car, but now I don't want another one just because of the way their customer "care" team handled things. I got my car back yesterday, after almost three weeks, and on the way home, another error message regarding a safety function flashed on my screen. I was contemplating keeping it, but that cemented my need to just go to another vehicle. Hopefully, they will be contacting me with their offer to buy it back soon. I'm either going back to Tesla, which gave me no problems, or the Cadillac Lyric.

I swore off VW after my wife's 2nd New Beetle--a 2001 Turbo. She loved driving it, but there were two problems that although not severe, were so stupid I couldn't get past it. 1. You have to remove the whole fender to replace a headlight--and it's expensive! 2. We kept having problems with the electric windows, so being an engineer I took off the door panel to investigate. What I found astounded me--a bunch of twisted up steel cable sprung out the door. The whole mechanism was a Rube Goldberg contraption of pulleys, cables, and levers that was absurd. Other manufacturers use a self-contained motor mechanism with few parts. Not VW. It's as if a bunch of VW engineers created a drinking game to see who could come up with the most ridiculous system to raise and lower a pane of glass. I don't care how well these cars may perform new, good engineering builds components to last, and when they do break, they' should be available and easily replaced.
I can't image that a motor has to be manufactured to match the car, but that's what I've come to expect from VW, and most German engineering I've encountered. I guess they never learned the K.I.S.S. principle.

After years of VW ownership, finally it was VW's indifference that made me swear off the marque. "They're great when they work" is not a business model. Neither that nor Dieselgate stopped VW from selling countless vehicles for decades, however. So maybe it's a viable business model after all.
If the car is in the shop under warranty for months, then 1. the US state might have a lemon law that requires VW to buy back the car if the customer requests that and 2. if the customer is making monthly payments on the car, shouldn't VW defray those payments during those months?

By mid-February I was getting the same electrical system error message. After taking it to the dealership twice and twice being told they could not find a problem, the dealer finally told me the problem was with he front drive motor which had to be replaced. Like you, I was told I could not drive the car and that it was unsafe in its present condition. The car has been sitting on the dealer’s lot since June 23rd! The last time I got an update I was told the replacement motor may arrive October 7th, but that’s no guarantee. The bottom line is that the car has been out of commission for 104 days as of this writing with no end in sight. This is completely unacceptable and VW has done a horrible job of managing the problem. I also watched every You Tube video on the ID4 before ordering it and though I had made a wise decision. I’m familiar with this nightmare although mine was to a lesser degree. I hope it goes well for you and other ID.4 owners.
My ordeal was with a 2016 e-Golf I bought used in 2020. Less than a week I’d get these messages about charging issues. This happened a few times and the car would take the charge after a few attempts. Sorry I don’t remember the exact wording the warning gave.
Finally on the 4th day it wouldn’t charge. Long story short my car was towed to the dealership in Gainesville, FL. I didn’t know how rare e-Golfs were in FL. My car originally was in MD.
Anyway the car sat at the dealership for a month before being towed to NJ for repairs. So yes a certified tech had to work on it and they were more familiar with the car. After two months (from dealership to NJ back to me driving) I got the car back and it drove perfectly fine afterwards.
The warranty paid for the towing and repairs supposedly to the battery pack.
So VW honored their drive train warranty, the other warranty expired. But by 2021 even the drive train warranty expired although the car only had 28k miles and I thought I read it was longer than 5 years. Anyway VW covered everything the repairs and towing. But from all of this I learned a lot.
When I buy another EV it will obviously have more range and has to be new (warranty is everything) although normally these cars are low maintenance. But only a few qualified people can work on them. I mean without a warranty I’d trust Rich Rebuilds more than anyone else.
From my experience I’m sure your car will be fixed but how long it’s taking is excessive. And yes, the dealerships are clueless. I was thinking by now they’d have it together.
My dealership in 2020 never saw an e-Golf. No one did except one guy said he saw someone driving one. I couldn’t believe my ears 👂 but it was true. VW could at least off video training on customer service although they cannot make repairs since they need a “certified tech who is qualified to work on electric VWs”.
They should already have plans of action of what to do.
Maybe you could ask your dealership if they have qualified techs to service your car OR make arrangements ahead of time for someone else to do it within VW. And so to give you and others a heads up ask if your car can be fixed LOCALLY when your parts finally arrive.

I don't know about ID.4 but I rented an ID.3 for a few months early last year. My experience with the car was that it was extremely annoying to drive. The #1 issue was the lane assist feature. It couldn't cope with snowy roads, and the only way to turn it off was to go three levels deep into the infotainment system menus. And then it would turn back on every time you restarted the car! The "smart" speed controller would, by default, *accelerate* if it thought the speed limit came up - and it ended up thinking that a snow covered 50 kph sign was in fact 80 kph and suddenly started accelerating the car in the middle of a road construction! Luckily, you could turn that feature off permanently. Also, the seats were just horrible for longer rides; there was no way to set them so my back wouldn't hurt after a longer trip. Speaking of which, the real world range seemed to be around 50% of the advertised range (admittedly that was in Finland in January, so I may have to give them some slack there). And it used so much energy! Which meant longer recharge stops, as it couldn't receive more than 50 kW anyway; the stops tended to be twice as long as with my friend's Hyundai Ioniq Electric (which was very sleek and efficient). Also, the smart speed controller system would just suddenly go offline with no warning nor any messages to tell the reason - you'd just notice the car starting to decelerate and the speed settings becoming unresponsive; the accelerator and brake pedals did keep working though, and the problem would usually go away with a restart.
But yeah. After that experience, I'd never touch any EV made by VW with a long pole.

They're just telling us what they've been told. VW corporate just wrote me this morning to say that the motor is (supposedly) being delivered to the dealer next week. IF that's true, and I'd almost be surprised if it is, then the big question will be: Can it actually be fixed?

I have owned several VW's in the past but when it became clear that Volkswagen (people's car) became a dealer's car instead of the people's car I vowed Volkswagen no more. It became the dealers car because they became engineered and built to keep making money for the dealer with all the service appointments needed both scheduled and non scheduled to keep the cars running. The cost of ownership became very high for owning a Volkswagen even just a Golf.
So, we went to Toyota. We are on our third Prius now and that one being the plug in. For the first 100,000 miles our only cost has been oil changes and tires - that is it. At 100,000 miles it gets a little more like spark plugs but the cost of ownership is as low as it can get.
I'll be getting my Tesla Y in January and later probably the Tesla 3 for the wife but we will be keeping the Prius Prime. We figure that it will end up being our daughter's car when she gets older - she is only 8 now. Can't do that with any Volkswagen.
We have 85,000 miles on our 2018 Prius Prime, but only about 35,000 of those miles are on the gas engine and that is only because of the many trips that we take.

Sorry to hear about your experience, I know how exciting it is to get a new EV and I am yet to find out how bad it feels to be disappointed shortly after. We wanted to order the ID4 with my wife in Canada but all dealerships were telling us there was no chance to get them within 2 years so we went with Tesla instead...

I can’t comprehend it either. The big story here is not so much that this has happened - it obviously can - but that VW has handled it so badly. If they’d taken the small trouble of explaining why, it would have felt at least a little less s****y. But they did not. The more I think about it, the angrier I get.

I needed a part and was told they did not exist yet and I would have to wait for it to be made. All parts currently manufactured are for new assembly cars only. After 4 months new part now fitted. Ouch.

Don't know the legal rules in the US but in Europe, if a car had to stay in the garage for a certain period of time and can't be fixed by the dealer/brand, it has to be bought back or replaced with a brand new one. You should check that out. Cause, what you experienced is ridiculous and embarrassing for a brand as big as the VW-Group.

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles; this situation is maddening. I had a reservation for one of these in 2021 and based on all of forums and research I did while waiting, I came to the conclusion that this car would be a regret. The computer is laggy and slow. There was already an OTA that European ID.4's received that US owners were waiting months for. The OTA process was not smooth. The electrical system messages. And on and on. Here's the fact: the traditional car manufacturers are TALKING a good game right now and living on dreams. Some of those dreams will eventually come true in volume of EVs sold. I just didn't want to be on the bleeding edge of their rushed experiments. So, I cancelled the order, and I'm glad I did. I hope they get you your new drive unit soon, and that no other problems crop up for you.

I drive many road trips here in Norway over mountains with bumpy roads, the id4 is a very good allrounder. I Also drove on a nearly 5000 kilometers long trip in Europe this summer from Norway to Italy through the Alps without any problems , but the navigation system and route planner must be better! id4 id is comfy, quiet, good on bumpy roads, good safety when you drive with luggage, less phantom breaking than Tesla etc. I know both tmy id4 and other ev owners, many new cars have some issues. I think some of the critical UA-cam videoes Are too black/white, the thruth is usually some place in the middle… The ota update is Also a big con, but in total id4 is a very good allrounder

(changed motor mount, changed high voltage connector, etc) Even if that's the case, as a manufacturer you are supposed to keep enough spares for every possible variant. (Even beyond the warranty period, there are laws in most countries that dictate how long spare parts should be available.) It's not acceptable to keep customer cars impounded for months because you have no replacement parts. I can imagine COVID and Ukraine threw a wrench in everyone's supply chain but then they should just offer to buy the car back instead of delaying for months.

The engine has to be replaced. Today the car is 15 days old. We have used it for 5 days and it has been 10 days at the garage. We notised the bam bam bam sound, like from a big subwofer after around 50 meters and talked about it at around 100m. The sound goes away at 40km/h.
I am realy wondering how long time this will take. 1 month? 3months? 6 months? Our local VW dealer is Norways biggest VAG dealer and may be the biggest VAG EV dealer in the world. So at least their garage has some experience with EV`s. About 82% of their sales last year was EV`s.
Soon the ID4 wil have spent more time in for repairs than our soon 12 years old Mitsubishi Miev and 6 year old Leaf has combined. We are just so disapointed that our first ever new car lasted 5 days.

It’s not a custom part problem, but VW issue parts with serial numbers and activation codes, even if the part is identical. Seems it’s a way of controlling dealership after sales and props up their “approved” workshop network.
We recently had a tow bar fitted and it came with a whole pamphlet for after sales activation, but a set of led lights couldn’t be fitted because we’d purchased them through a third party (bad advice from the dealership and VW messing up the online configuration) and VW wouldn’t issue a code because it would alter their warranty!
A different dealership has been great about sorting out issues, but VW are opaque at best.
Love the ID4, but my next car will be up for debate.
