Intarsia Knitting: a Knittycat's Knits Tutorial

- Video tutorial on how to knit with multiple colors using the intarsia knitting technique. For the multicolored sample (doll's blanket) shown in the video, I used leftover yarns (worsted weight, medium) and US size 7 needles (4.5 mm). I cast on a total of 24 stitches (8 stitches in each color) and for each set of blocks, I knit 14 rows in garter stitch. I bound off the stitches in color using a regular bind off method.
To determine gauge for a project with this pattern, suggest knitting a small swatch using the yarn and needles (recommended for that yarn; usually noted on the yarn label). Cast on a multiple of any number of stitches and knit a few rows. Then, measure the width of the swatch. Say you cast on 12 stitches and it measured 2 inches wide, then that is your gauge. For a blanket project, let's say if you wish for each square block to be 8 inches wide, then do the math as follows: if 2 inches of fabric require 12 stitches, then 8 inches of fabric will require: 8 x 12, and divide that number by 2, which gives you 48. Then you would need to cast on 48 stitches with each color for each row of blocks. You can then keep knitting as many rows until you get the desired length (to either make a square or rectangular block).

THANK YOU. Someone mentioned your video in the comment section of ANOTHER video. There are tons of videos showing how to add a color in the middle of your work, but apparently you are the only one showing how to START with more than one color in the cast on. Very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you🤗 Best wishes!
That's how I got here
Hi Angela, am so glad you got here and hope it was helpful. Thanks for watching and best wishes!🤗
Thank you for explaining the intertwining part so well! I am trying to work out a pattern for myself adding a checkerboard pattern to it and it and I was having such trouble working out how to link the different colours together! None of the other tutorials explained this so simply!
Thanks so much, @SparkleandPop! Glad you found it helpful. It's feedback like this that keeps me motivated to post videos. Best wishes!😀
This is exactly what I needed, thank you so much! I almost started on a big project in a much more roundabout way. I guess I'd better get practicing on my intarsia . . .
My pleasure, Annette! So glad you found this useful. I hope to do a video soon on intarsia knitting in the round (fair-isle style). Best wishes on your project!😊
Very easy to follow! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this amazing resource for crafters 🦋
Thanks so much! Best wishes🤗
I’ve watched so many different videos on this and this one was by far the easiest to understand! Thank you so much for sharing :)
My pleasure, Nicole! Best wishes😃
you sound so nice and patient and gentle! thank you so much for the very informative video!!

Not sewing them is the best ! Am not a big fan of sewing/seaming edges and so this way of intarsia knitting works really well. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊
Oooooh a SUPER stash buster and lovely, brill. Thank you. 👌🐢
Yup. Great way to use up all the little remnants😊
Thank you as this video was easy to understand which has helped me now to get on with my Intarsia blanket.
You are most welcome, Barbs! Thanks for watching and best wishes with the blanket project!😀
Thank you for this! Super easy to follow and I’m going to use this for knitting in the round! 🙏😊
My pleasure, Kathy! And I am glad that you will try it (although for knitting in the round with 2 or more colors, can try the Fair-Isle technique of carrying yarn floats in the back; am hoping to do a video on this soon). Best wishes!😊
I really appreciate this tutorial! I have always stayed away from intarsia... I will now give it a go!
Thanks, Susan! Glad you found it useful and are going to try it (and hopefully love it). Best wishes😃
Thank you for this video, it really helped me out and answered all my questions with the pattern I'm using xxx
My pleasure, Molly! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching and best wishes 😃
You explain so clearly, thank you ❤️
Thanks, Amy! Best wishes😀
Thank you so much, this is so helpful! I was about to give up on intarsia but this answered all my questions
My pleasure, Layemi! So glad that was helpful. I hope you end up liking intarsia just as much as I do. Such a wonderful technique for multicolor knitting. Thanks for watching and best wishes!
This video is super helpful and makes a lot of sense 😊 thanks!
That's great to hear, Jessica! Thanks for watching and best wishes😀
love this video! can you show us how to do it with a stockinette stitch?
Thanks, Julianne😊 And yes, cam demo this in stockinette stitch. Will plan a video/project on that in the upcoming weeks.
@@KnittycatsKnits Did you ever do this? It didn't come up in my search of your videos. Thanks!
Hi Cheryll, not yet. Was initially hoping to demo it as a project. Later, had some swatches made to demo in the video a couple months ago but didn't actually get to make the video ☺ Will plan (and make it so) some time this month. Thanks so much for your patience and best wishes! Happy New Year!!
Thank you so much this was just what I needed to know 🥰
My pleasure, Rhona! So glad this was helpful. Happy New Year and best wishes!😀
This is so valuable! Thanks.🇿🇦😷👍🙏
Glad you liked it, Isabella. Thanks for watching and hope you can use this technique on a future project😊
I'm trying to knit a checkerboard scarf (more like the purple & white pattern/two colors). It seems like one has to cut the yarns every time a row is knitted. It seems like there would be a lot of lose tails on each row. The scarf also has a border.
bardar ko dusre rang se bnad kaise kre
@rekharajput6469, jab apko piece ko ek alag rang ya koi doosre rang mein band karna hai, toh tab bas us rang ko row ke shuru main join kare (jaise video main doosre blocks ke row mein dikhaya tha) aur phir usi rang se band kare (shayad pahale us doosre rang se ek row plain knit kare aur phir agle row main band kare taki thodisi border jaise dikhe). Thank you 🙏 aur apko humari subhicchayen 🤗
can you show us the method of how to hide the small tails inside the
Hi Betty, sorry for delay in responding. For weaving in yarn tails, please see this video of mine: ua-cam.com/video/mh0JKJTtC6g/v-deo.htmlsi=d4NBWRfD5sItxLbu. Hope it helps. Thanks and best wishes 🤗
Can you show how to do this in the round? Like if I wanted to make a beanie with two colors? Same concept?
Great question, Edith! In the round, the technique is similar (also known as fair-isle knitting) but you don't need to use separate skeins for each section but rather carry the unused yarn in the back (as a float). It is used quite commonly in knitting fair-isle or mosaic knitting projects. Hope to do videos on those techniques over the next few weeks. But for now, if you search UA-cam for "fair isle knitting", I am sure you will find several helpful videos. Many thanks for watching and best wishes!😊
Thank you so much!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching and best wishes!
could you do this for a hat on circular needles?
Thank you 🙂 i think this will work on cardigan? 💖
Thanks, Tan Su Min! Yes, I think it will definitely work on a cardigan. You can also try the same technique with stockinette stitch (one row knit, one row purl) and it will look good. Thanks for watching and best wishes!
If I do a square of 30 instead of holding the yarn under I knit 9 stitches single strand 10 I knit with 2 yarns
thanks very much!! your video is very helpful because it's quite difficult to find this technique on the Indonesian channel😣😣
You are most welcome! Happy you found this helpful and hope you try this wonderful and easy technique. Thanks for watching and best wishes!
The link you provided is not the same cast on method you are using in this video. Other than that fantastic video!!
Hi Rebecca, thanks for letting me know. Actually, it is shown in the same video but starts at 2.06 (knitted cast on). I will add the time stamp to the video description (: Thanks again and best wishes😃
@@KnittycatsKnits thank you so much!! I love your page, keep up the great work 😊
Great!!
Thanks, Doni!😀

*time stamp for me
I can’t figure out how you would do this with two colours? :)
Hi Caitlin, actually you would knit it exactly as shown in the video except that you will need separate skeins of the 2 colors to knit each section. So for instance, in the 2-color little coasters in the video thumbnail, for the first row that had the 2 purple and one white square, I need to separate skeins of the purple and one of the white to knit that section, then two of the white and one of the purple for the next section, and so on (once done with one section, you can snip the yarns, leaving a bit of a tail to weave in later, and can use that skein again for the next section of the checkerboard). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes (:
