  • At the Elham Valley Railway Museum at Peene near Folkestone in Kent there is a restored original car from the Leas Cliff Funicular Railway which took passengers from the Leas Cliff down to the lower sea front at Folkestone. The Leas Cliff Lift has been out of action for some years now but it is still there with it's two newer cars and there are plans (and an appeal for donations) to restore it to service. The lift worked by having two water tanks beneath the cars - by filling one tank up at the top and emptying the water from the car at the bottom, the heavier car with it's full tank pulled up the lighter car with it's empty tank. That is why we see and hear water running beneath the restored car as in the museum display water is being fed into the tank and running out through the outflow pipe.
