  • Let’s go fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast. I am fossil hunting West of Lyme Regis today.I’m going fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast at low tide. I’d like to find some of the beautiful little pyrite ammonites that wash out along the beach at low tide. Little nuggets of gold delight, saved from the shifting sands. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right little rocks. I am going to show you a video of me splitting an ammonite out of a limestone rock.I have spent along time sizing up the manner in which certain ammonites 'pop' out of the rock. So look and learn how i spend alot of time sizing the rock up. Fossil hunting really does take hours of patience and persistence. I’m going to show you me looking for those ammonite bearing rocks after Christmas time. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs, the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfo... There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast. Thanks karsten Genzel for the Eoderoceras sp. ammonite chamber, that was a really well polished ammonite fragment you did.

Hi, i am probably (hopefully) going to be able to go to Lyme Regis next week for the first time and i would like to know if you have any tips that i could use for finding fossil ammonites, crinoids, etc…?
Such as where, how, when, what to look for, etc…
I already know a few things from watching your video such as to look for the sides of ammonites on the rocks and to look in the pyrite but i would like to know if there’s anything else i need to know that could help before going?

The main tip is keep away from the dangerous cliffs as they are liable to fall suddenly and without warning ⚠️. The low tide is the best place for collecting fossils as more of the beach is exposed. You can look in rock pools and gullies that might trap fossils. A good video on my UA-cam channel is “Ammonite Lyme Regis. “ if you pop into my fossil shop in Lyme Regis, I can show you how to look for crinoids and where .

Bank holiday coming up, there will be loads of children around and your warning about the dangerous cliffs, couldn't be more apt.
The cliffs are in a very dangerous state right now, so I hope people heed your warning.

Thanks 🙏 very much for mentioning this Mike ! You can’t mention this enough i reckon - the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning ⚠️ along the Jurassic Coast! Stay away from the dangerous cliffs everyone !!!

I have created a standard reply for the fossil walks at the moment. I am also in my shop in Lyme Regis running that a lot of the time. I will be fossil walking if you so wish to try this activity during October 2023 onwards ! Sorry we have no availability for fossil walks until then.Nigel Clark local authour he does the fossil walks at times he may have passed you my way . He gets very busy like me in the holidays . Some one I recommend for the fossil walks is @mikeharrisonsfossils on Instagram his mobile no. is 07526563997. Your in safe hands on a fossil walk with MIke as he is a regular on the beach looking for fossils at low tide ! We have a video on UA-cam called "Ammonite Lyme Regis."My channel on UA-cam is “ Lyme Regis Fossils ,” if you’d like to view that please see the video I mentioned it really shows you how to find fossils properly at low tide- along the Jurassic Coast. You need a tide table book or knowledge of when it’s low tide here at Lyme Regis. You can go out an hour before low tide and hour after low tide looking East of Lyme Regis on the 2008 landslide . Thats a good place to sieve for fossils . We sell sieves at 7 Drakes Way , Lyme Regis DT7 3QP . Come to our shop for any more information you need on fossil collecting. We can give you the most up to date news possible on where to look and what to do on Lyme Regis East beach. Good luck on the beach and don’t venture near to the cliffs . The cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. The sea does the work for you washing the fossils out of mudslides and landslips. You have more beach to look at during low tide along the Jurassic Coast .Please see our video below on UA-cam, Thanks BrandonLennon….. “Black Ven Landslide , Lyme Regis , 11th November 2021

Yes 🙌 I do shipping overseas but have to work out the post costs . You need a tide table for 2024 which comes out near to Christmas 2023, to see wether you can go out fossil collecting in conjunction with safe tide times . It’s best to go fossil collecting at low tide - an hour before low tide and an hour afterwards. This gives you more of the beach to look at . Also too you must stay away from the dangerous cliffs that are liable to fall suddenly and without warning ⚠️.

Can you look at a fossil and guess its age?

I’ve got a really good idea what stones are which . So a birchi nodule I can tell from a tiny fragment it’s the rock that contains Microderoceras birchi named after colonel Birch who discovered these Jurassic period nodules !
