  • This Fall, Sotheby’s is honored to offer a magnificent pre-war collection of early 18th century Meissen porcelain formed by Franz and Margarethe Oppenheimer. Many pieces in the collection, including a highly important mantel clock case, have royal provenance and were created explicitly for King Augustus the Strong’s famed Japanese palace. In spite of their fragility, the pieces are in excellent condition, having survived Nazi confiscation and subsequent rescue from the Allies renowned Monuments Men. Recently restituted to the Oppenheimer heirs, the collection will be sold at Sotheby’s New York on 14 September.

I was drawn to this as a collector of facial hair, especially variegated examples.

So... the Dutch museum gave it back to the descendants... and now, they are selling it. But of course.
Should've stayed in the museum if you want people to have the chance to 'view the new collection through a new lens', madam. Because this 'new lens' you're talking about is the money that will suffice their acquisition by a few wealthy ppl.

Disagree. It is their rightfull property. It is up to them to decide not you, me, a government, a museum, a political party. The museum was never the rightfull owner. Perhaps you did not saw the full video.

I am not saying what is right or wrong. Gave my opinion. Now they will sit in the living room of some Chinese billionaire, or if it is too expensive, in a bank safe.
We do not know what the illustrious Oppenheimer family did to acquire these items of royal provenance. Maybe they had questionable tactics as well back in the day.
Anyway, they are selling everything they own that is of some value. Including that flawless blue diamond. I am guessing they are in need of funds.
The items were better off sitting in a museum where millions could appreciate them. Perhaps some museum can purchase them. One that has money.

@@alantes We can not make assumptions. However we do know the facts. Again it is up to the rightfull owners to decide. And it is up to us to respect their wishes.
