The Cinematic Sin: The Filmmaker's Guide Back to Reality

- Your video isn't cinematic, sorry. Cinematic has to be the most improperly used word in the filmmaking youtuber world. What does it even mean? All these short 1-2 minute videos titled "cinematic" and it's just a collection of boring streetscapes or emotionless and meaningless scenes. People actually think having the background blurred out is cinematic. Shooting at f1.4 isn't cinematic, it's often distracting and weird looking.

Where is the homeless man washing kit you alluded to?
My main complaint was articulated perfectly here. No story=no imagination=NOT cinematic
What if you shoot at 30 fps and have a story? Can 30 fps be cinematic?
@@into.the.wood.chipper.no
@@into.the.wood.chipper. 30 fps wow,. you might as well be doing 120fps, and if its not filmed in 3D its not even real. everyone knows 1 frame per week is the maximum framerate.
@@Tappits841 frame per week and only if you can tell everyone there's maximum B O K E H .
@@into.the.wood.chipper.
What if you stopped caring about cinematic and just had good lightning, audio and a damn good story to tell, to hell with the cinema.
The Cinematic Triangle: Blurry Background, Black Bars & 120fps B-Roll
Honourable mentions; Aggressive colour grading, fake lens flairs & lo-fi background music.
UA-cam scrubs of the World unite
@@Dar1usz depends for who that is "outdated", it still looks more inspiring than raw vhs style video
it's more about too long shots and slow-motion to make it "more inspiring"
if each shot would be like 5s max nobody would see its a fake
Toneh is for people on Teams calls who are embarrassed about their house. Decorate your home, it’s cheaper than a lens.
hahaha so true!!
"You're not a movie bitch!" I can't stop laughing....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I hope Phil Bloom watches this. His toneh addiction is real. Last video his ear wasn't even in focus. It's... distracting.
Cinematic is not a shot or a special FStop, it’s a chain of shots that combined together pull the viewer out of their world and into yours. It’s a well planed out sequence. Not a camera, lens or LUT.
Well said
I'm honored that UA-cam has been recommending my one minute video content to you 🤭
I've learned that pursuing the maximum amount of Toneh is a side effect of not having a great location. I've come to prefer shooting everything at f/4 and above, only going wide open when I want to utilize it's characteristics for specific things.
Stay golden Tonehhh boy! Best camera channel on the tube!
Good Morning my cinematic friend! Ha! Just as you said "it's all blurry, what happened. A UA-cam said it would be cinematic", an advertisement jumped in for the Google Pixel and it's "cinematic blur"! LOL! This point you're making is spot on by the way. If you're vlogging don't you want to show where you are? Yes, it is! A nice extra as you know, is that when you stop down you increase your DOF and zone focus becomes easier making it more likely you are in focus. Loved this gem of a video. You use silliness to teach. That is good. Have a great day!
These are the brighter parts of my day watching these, I'll be your friend 🤣🤣🤣
Soooo cinematic! So filmic! Really painterly, dreamy bokEh! Such subject and background separation!!!
We need more cinematic interludes.
This should be the first video in Cinematography 101. Great humor. More Samyang!
Why, oh why, doesn't SONY add focus breathing compensation to that damn A7SIII, the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 is a glorious lens, only let down is the focus breathing.
I don't know what I just watched, either it was so beautifully cerebral and beyond my comprehension or a desperate cry for help? Either way it was gosh darn entertaining! Thanks Kasey!
Most movies are shot at F2.8 on S35 sensors. So DoF is more than F4 on full frame. They even close to F4 and sometimes to F8/F11.
Cinematic F1.4 :D :D :D
I got the same recommendation ("Cinematic" clips shot on XX Camera).
What makes movies get that 3d look you are used to, is from using long focal lengths. Majority of OTS dialogue scenes are shot at over 100mm equivalent. Most youtubers don't have the space inside and its hard to film yourself at this length, so its not used very often. I have been toying with shooting at 135-150mm for face shots and I am loving the look I am getting. And NO you don't have to stop down to the minimal T/F stop to get the look you want.
And nope you got it wrong, the greats like Deakins prefer focal lengths that are closer to the human eye perspective like 40mm. Lighting, is far more important to achieve the look than the lens.
@@jaegerschtulmann Deakin is my hero. Also can't argue with you about lighting one bit. It is and will always be the most important part of any shot ever. But for majority of hollywood the OTS shots are done at longer focal lengths, the compression really gives a 3d look and allow the actors eyes to really come to life.
Yes Deakins shot 1917 with a 40mm prime, he didn't want to change much because the movie is supposed to be a ONER and he didn't want the distortion change.
That said there are director and DPs that prefer wider angles. I have no problem with that.
I still stand by what I said. If you want a OTS closeups you should experiment with 100mm+ focal lengths. Its kinda like a cheat code for depth... but like you said you can't cheat lighting!
I love how you always pick such relevant and fun topics. I'm one of those 'cinematic' Sony vlogger guys. Thanks for the laughter.
Finally!! I've already lost all hope to see another toneh video.
Dude, next time I am in T.O. , I want to take you for a drink. I can only imagine how much your humour and sarcasm looks like after a pint or four…
👏👏👏
Please make an idiot’s (photographer’s) guide to video-making. I’m a 2nd rate photographer trying to smush together 3rd rate videos for an anemic UA-cam channel. You’re smart enough, trustworthy enough, funny enough, and handsome enough to make it happen. Seriously...
You had me at 8 Tonehs in the bedroom.
Agreed, it's nice to have context, and backgrounds provide that context
Now my mind is blurry.
That sweet jerky focus breathing around 2:30 is very cinematic.
Best educational video that I wateched this month.
if a focus pull were possible with a one man crew that would solve the problem. Get the background established then focus on the subject. Truly cinematastic. Also it all depends on your goals. If your goal, like many vloggers is to assuage your raging narcissism, then of course you want everything else obliterated in the background so that only your beautiful face (the only important thing really) is in focus.
well put and good observation on the narcistic element
Great vid. Thanks
I really think f/2.8 is the magic number. Anything shallower than that is just unnecessary in most cases. It’s almost like Canon knew about this before they made the 2.8 zooms 😂 lol.
Anything lower than f/2.8 means you need to add more light to your scene to get proper exposure
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO, finally someone says it.
i got an old zeiss distagon 35/2 - that thing is magical. wont ever get rid of it.
In my opinion shallow depth of field has to be chosen under the circumstance of its requirement to support the storyline, or a specific look that film maker wants to create. Not all the shots with fully opened aperture looks great, but we can guide the audience eyes to what is important in the frame. Shows like Euphoria utilized shallow depth of field to its best. Good video bro liked it very much. Your contents are fun to watch

I do love the 90mm macro. That lens pretty much lives on my camera.
love you content, hate the sandals
❤
Your videos are like cheese. I know it’s bad for me, but I’m drawn to consume late at night, and I just want more. And it gives me dreams, occasionally nightmares.
The birds passing by at 10:23 where very cinematic...Cormorants?
I love you man!
"Luckily it's the friend we've met along the way that... I MADE NO FRIENDS !"
You killed me, as always 🤣
well. i NEED that 0.95 or 1.4 wide open. because i am doing pics and clips at party, event, club, concert. so the background blur saves me work to blur faces from ppl. that don`t want to be on picture. 🤷♂also i need every piece of light i can get at night. so there is often no alternative for me - i have to shoot wide open or at least f 2.0..
incredible. love your down to earth presentation and also i share your opinions on "cinematic" -- ugh. Cheers man
"I'm leaving, how you doing?" wish I could say stuff like that
I laughed, I cried, and then I subscribed.
I like the *slightly* blurry background.
I've seen toneh addicts that blur out so much of the shot they end up blurring half of their subject as well, like food shots.. half the plate is blurred out. If seeing that doesn't give me a confidence boost in my own ability then nothing will.
Camera wisdom AND parkour skills? Had to 👍the video
Me an my cheap kit lenses never have this problem
again, clever and funny as hell…
Loved the Mary Tyler Moore hat toss at 3:05. If not cinematic it was definitely sit-com-ic.
Tom the caveman invented joy in our hearts…
Got to love the "cinematic" shots at sporting events too. I love seeing the player come in and out of focus and all the spectators and rest of the team blurred out.
I stayed for the thunder lilies.
Thunder Lilies are go!
@@arkphotog If we all wish hard enough they will exist.
This is one of your best, most instructive videos. Thanks.
I like to think of earth as a giant cd and the sun as the laser that reads our disc.
I wish Thunder Lilly’s existed
I love sarcasm, so I love you.
One of the most entertaining and yet sometimes informative too!
I'm still here for those thunder lillies! Only anamorphic is more cinematic than this, however too many obnoxious flairs are certainly on my list of negatives.
Winter will be here soon.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
A lot of problems can be solved by asking why. Context can keep people from saying, "I need a wider angle lens so I can get everything, but I want a 1.4 so I can blur out my landscape view because someone told me it's cinematic." When the fundamentals of, a time and a place for everything, is seriously lacking.
Cinematographers need a lot of skills to shoot cinematic footage. They usually shoot stopped down, rather than wide open. Framing and blocking is part of these necessary cinematic skills and CC is doing that throughout this video.
The thing is, with many "cinematic" effects like for example a subject following, any cool perspective changes etc you often have to rely on expensive tracking stuff for example a circular or straight frame where your camera slides smoothly on it and at best motorized.
As this one youtuber, i forgot his name, he has his camera literally mounted on a super expensive robotic arm with 4 or 5 axis, allowing ANY movement for even better advertisement and showcase videos than the real manufacturer produced.
Or just look at those camera cranes with IMAX cameras on it for hollywood productions etc, thats some serious expense.
@@harrison00xXx True. Camera movement is a big part of a cinematic look. You can do it manually, but it takes a skilled crew.
Yep. I subbed after watching this video.
While pursuing the perfect camera Dipswitch discovers the perfect therapist . . . (hint . . . It's the Music).
I love the way you get your points across , id love to hear how you approach your storytelling in like a short film or something, you are very creative 👍
off the charts toneh right now!
Just caught the Tony (toneh) northrup video reference as soon as walked into the lake scene xD
The earth is flat! Omg great video. Too good. Thanks.
Some people even add a fake anamorphic flare to their videos to make the footage look "cinematic". That is like thinking you look like Harrison Ford, if you scratch a scar into your chin.
The "Cinematic Interlude" was pure gold.
What do you think of the Fuji 16-55/2.8? I've been using it as my everything lens on the XT1 and i enjoy the 3d pop but i'm not as serious of a filmmaker
Three thumbs up!
Tony 4 is the ideal amount of tonys for cinema. A 16-35 f4 is the perfect lens for UA-cam scrubs.
Tony 4 for full frame! For APS-C its like 2.8 for most regular focal lengths and for MFT partially even F0,95...
Dig your humor 👍
With depth of field comes the challenge of composition, because you are not hiding anything everything is part of your image and if your composition isn’t right you’ll never have a balanced image / scene. So where a shallow DoF has its place, more DoF requires more skill.
Try the Canon RF50 1.2 or the RF85 1.2 for 3d pop whilst still being able to see the background, those 2 lenses are in another league.
too much elements not enough 3d-pop, they look too clean and sharp, as most modern lenses
Some dont even dare to leave their house.
Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 pro test (MFT) test soon maybe? Wanted to do a weekend test one myself, but the rental price .. was not the best
"My God" sounded a lot like Charlton Heston, who was definitely cinematic.
come on i needed to see that third eye, if i wanted to see toneh i would stop the video down to 240p
just came here for the cinematic interlude
Tip, Bluray Background makes the video file size much smaller. and saving Hard Drives 😁😁😁😊
I have finally seen the "POP" - was it the Zeiss?
if you watch Murdoch Mysteries, which is set in the past. You get a lot of outdoor blurry shots within more open area, as hey use it to hide all the modern things in the background that they can't otherwise hide lol. Saves on CGI budget, saves the watchers immersion.
Imagine going over to your friends house, it's completely pitch black inside and this video is playing on a giant tv, and a man is sitting in an office chair staring at this video intently.
This dude is involved in a full scale war against the Toneh.
I enjoyed the longer focal lengths of this one. Kinda tired of the ultra wide look. Personally, I never use anything wider than 24mm.
You forgot to add the link for your Cinematic LUT pack!!!
Dat poor firmwareless A7sIII focus breathing pain tho😬or at least give an extremely slow/smooth focus setting 😩
awesome -- you are funny.
5:35 davinci resolve will also give it to you if you understand how to use masking, exposure and maybe sometimes with moderation: vignette.
The 3d pop is as real as the moon.
And regarding taking video of people ... I've done some testing and apart of full body shot shooting below F2.8 makes no sense. Because even your subject is not fully in focus.
Faster than F2.8 shot might make sense if it makes the story. For example the dream shot at F1.4 or faster lens might add to the story. Or you want to show isolation of your character.
ROFLMAO!!!!!
"Now we have 8 Toneh's in your bedroom"
Say "Hi" to Tom.
There's one thing about "stopping down"- the toneh isn't quite as good due to the shape of the blades. One more point for M43.
This is why I went with the 24-105G f4. I didn't want my images to be super blurry. Also I was finding that even at 2.0 my nose was in focus but my ears were not.
Hahaha, thank you for the video. Stepped on many tails today, keep doing that, 😂😂😂
Blurry backgrounds are the favorite tools of vloggers and serial killers. (Both of those groups are also tools, which will make you lose consciousness if you think about it too long.) Who among us hasn't had a girlfriend or boyfriend who had to be the only thing in the universe you could focus on? You see what I'm getting at here? Don't be a tool. Get rid of your self-centered girlfriends and serial killers. Stop down the tonehs and move back a notch, and let the rest of the world have some screen time.
I wrote a blurry background haiku to illustrate:
I need to be clear
Nothing else is important
Don't take my tonehs
Finally figured out what Toneh was. That took some time traveling. Is 3D Pop another insider thing?
