I always heard the Sig Yak designed by Maxey Hester, was a great flying model, and you just proved it. I have always liked the -18 model. The full scale version is built like a tank, and were very strong aerobatic contenders in their day.

Sig Yak was actually designed by Claude McCullough. Maxy had some great designs. Still want to get 1/4 SCALE CUB WIND OF THESE DAYS.

@@Fluffy_Butt I stand corrected, as you are very right. Another Sig model that flies like no other is their Skybolt. It's hard to explain, but it is one sweet flying bird, with no bad habits at all!

SIG designed models were always some of the best. Nothing to worry about flying qualities with a SIG model airplane. 👍

Great set of videos again Stuart. All useful stuff for a newbie like me. What a great looking plane in the air with brilliant sound for an electric motor. Classic. Look forward more of your restoration projects.

Hey Glyn, and thank you for your kind words. Yes she surprised me with her charm, so much so she's still in the hanger and will be flown again come the spring ;) Some more restores coming at some point this year, as and when. Actually already started a small one, maybe I'll do a video on that sometime in the near future, just a quick ARF restore.
      Stuart.

Martin Pettersson thanks for the feedback. I was lucky with this one, wasn’t much in the way of repairs to do, mostly just cleaning and touch ups. However the next restoration (the Sig 1/3 Spacewalker) does have some damage and as I’m shooting and repairing I’m trying to show you guys what I find and how I tackle it, but without slow my restore down too much. Hopefully I’ll strike the right balance in the next restore vid, Pt1 coming soon.

Trying to find what's ugly about it. It's a beautiful airplane. And its flight characteristics make it more enduring. If you have use rudder in the turns and be conscious of tip stalls and other quirks Id keep it. I don't love today's modern models that you just point and shoot. You got a really good score there Stuart. Thanks for sharing the content.

    • @stuartwarnerc
      @stuartwarnerc  4 роки тому

Jacen Grey could not agree more, I actually get bored very quickly of flying modern PNP models nowadays, they (mostly) just fly too well, each one becomes the same experience in the air now. I think it’s one of the reasons I loving bringing these old birds back to life, they have unique but also enjoyable flying characteristics.

some info. good work. this model has a lot of wingspan. it appears that the airfoil makes lift, all the way to the FUSE. if so, this central lift attenuates the amount of pendulum effect stability; in the airframe. it is not clear whether the model's glide slope was evaluated; in addition to stall-point. comments during the flight seem to ignore the fact that, because the main wing has only limited dihedral, turns Must be initiated with Aileron input and they Must be completed with Elevator input. (so-called 'banknyank') cheers googletranslate

Hi Stuart, What’s the wing span on this?
I’ve got one that looks exactly the same but is maybe a bit bigger? Wondering if the kit came in different sizes? Mine spans just over 2.1m. It’s equipped with a 26cc gas engine. no retracts or flaps though. Super ugly, but very cool. Like yours, it flies really well.

    • @stuartwarnerc

Hi Joe. Mine Sig Yak is just under 2m, I’m not aware of a different size of the same model from Sig.

      Thanks Stuart.
Mine must be from a different kit. Having watched your video again, I noticed yours has a built up wing but mine is veneered foam.
Like you, I like bringing old models back to life, especially when you can get them so cheap. I paid £37 for my Yak including the engine and servos. That’s a lot of fun for the money!
Anyway, thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it.

@@stuartwarnerc Retro planes with retro colour schemes will never go out of fashion. I use the Frsky S6r rx with built in giro on most things these days (makes landing easier). My latest plane is a very old Toot Sweet biplane converted to electric, great fun.

Nice to see one flying. My dad start one of these before I was born. Never finished it's been following me around every since. Sadly after 47 years it pretty beat up. Fortunately I came across a new in box kit at a great price so some day that will be built and templates made to fix and finish dads. Looks like your original builder went with the PM variant. I'm thinking one of each I like the looks of the P a bit better.

Tim Egersheim this model was such a surprise for me. I wanted to get it flying again because it had some history but never expected to keep it, but I flies soooo well, I couldn’t think of letting it go now. So good luck with your build.

I really enjoyed the Yak 18 restoration series, the effort certainly paid off.
I bet there’s not many of that Sig model around these days, imagine how rare it will be in another thirty years! It’s a pity that there’s not more of the old Soviet planes available in RC, but they’re an acquired taste and manufacturers obviously need to make popular subjects to make sales. I personally love the more quirky, some might say ugly aircraft.
I’ve still got a few more of your videos to watch then I’ll be eagerly waiting to see the Pup.
A quick constructive comment, get a tripod so we can see a little more of what goes on in the workshop. Otherwise keep doing what you are doing.
