Flair SE5-A RC Restoration - Part 1

- This summers restoration project, a very sorry looking Flair SE5-A! Yet another second hand purchase that's has been sitting in the rafters for almost 5 years now! Finally its time has come. In this first part I talking you through the history of the model and look at the (rather substantial amount it would turn out) work required to get the airframe ready for flight again. I'm going to be honest, this thing was a mess, but as you'll see, she end up working out rather, even if not as originally intended....
I hope (fingers crossed) Part 2 of this video will come in the next 4-6weeks, and with that the model will be covered and flown for the first time in I suspect, at least 15 years. So keep an eye out for PT2 at some point in the future and hope you enjoy watching the transformation this airframe has gone through thus far this summer.

Glad you kept the Albert pilot as it is common to many of the original scout range.
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing Stuart. I like seeing what you're up to.
Great job, Stuart.✌️ Rgds Terje (Norway)
Very nice work.
Great to see an old wooden model being restored. Keep that pilot!!!
Great restore Stuart! Looking forward to seeing her fly again!
I have the old PZ 5a but I'd sure welcome a fresh new one from Durafly!! 🙂
Lovely project Stuart, you’re very much a man after my own heart. For you it’s Flair, for me Bowman. There’s a great sense of achievement taking a classic old model that’s been loved in the past then neglected; and bringing it back life. My current project, the Bowman 85 inch Miles Magister. The work steps very much mirror your SE5A. Looking forward to seeing flying in part two.
An interesting project - I enjoyed the format
Looking forward to seeing it fly
Nice work Stu that’s a lot of work and very rewarding good job 👍
Great to see you back again Stuart. This is exactly the niche subject that I like to see on you Tube
Nice project.
Looks great Stuart, look forward to see it flying again 👍👍😁
Absolutely fantastic project Stu, great to see you refinishing these old models! They deserve to fly again and I'm looking forward to following along on this one's journey back to the sky my friend!
Thanks man.
Ciao stuart... Bel lavoro... Anche se preferisco il suono del 4T... Sty...da 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Beautiful project Stuart! I like the decision to go E power. Makes sense as old as it is. Very nice work!
I too like a good restoration. Having done several of both Balsa and Foamies, I agree it does give a lot of satisfaction and in most cases, a lot quicker than a scratch build! Looking forward to seeing the next installment.
It does indeed. Thank you.
Great job Stuart, I really like seeing a restoration project. Looking forward to the next part, setting out fly.
It's inspired me to revisit the Flair Cub I learnt to fly with 28 years ago and do an electric conversion on that. A slow flying gentle floater for those balmy summer evenings. Thanks for the inspiration.
That’s great to hear thank you.
Glad to see you again my friend!! Happy your back and had a great trip. This makeover is fantastic!! What a huge difference some work and diligence makes. Love taking something old and making it new again, and the new memories it will make. Can’t wait to see it recovered and flying. Thanks for sharing and hope to see ya soon👊🏼👊🏼
Back in the days I've had their F2b. I've had to decide between F2b and this SE5-A. F2b won :) Lovely, very unusual build - there was no 1:1 scale plan to use. Anyway, it was a very easy build.
Absolutely love these videos Stuart!
Hey, nice to hear from you guys, hope all is well.
Glad the plans proved useful hope to maiden my SE5A in the next couple of weeks
Yes thanks again Mark. I only needed them for the rudder in the end, but its good to have them for future reference too. I have digital copies now if you need FYI.
Nice video. Love those flair kits. Had a puppeter long time ago and still miss it. Nice work on the plane mr. Waiting to see it ready for maiden 😊
Yeah the Pup is the best flying IMO.
Nice progress video. I'm enjoying watching the resurrection of this plane.
Regarding painted roundels (or other more complex markings), I found that 3D printing stencils with TPU provides accurate and flexible stencils that can be attached with 3M Repositionable Spray Adhesive. Airbrush only to prevent bleeding.
I'm sure you're on top of it so please ignore my comments if they are not helpful.
I'm looking forward to seeing the final product take to the air again.
Hi, no thank you for the feedback. I have some ideas for the roundals but still exploring so thanks again.
👍👍 Nice project !
Amazing work so satisfying I did a Magnatilla a few years ago very enjoyable looking forward to seeing this project take to the air.
Was the small hobbyking clip a Me 163 ? I really would love one of those😊
Looking good Stuart. One of the flyers at our club is doing an electric version of one of these and it would be useful if you could let me know after your initial flights how far back from the front of the LE of the top wing the CG ended up and if the motor thrust angles worked out ok without any further adjustment.🤔
Sure will do. I've actually started the covering already so maybe in a month or so she'll actually fly!
Nice plane....
Hi the incidence of the wings must to be 0°?
I have no idea, we’ll see how she behaves when she’s flies.
Did you chuck those servos out? All you needed to do was replace the servo lead and plugs. I have a video here regarding this. ua-cam.com/video/5sPeC57z9YY/v-deo.htmlsi=Os7TZV7LA2rKnCU9
